Few evidence-based conclusions1. Evidence that marked research is important for

interventions requiring behaviour change2. Limited evidence that targeted subsidies

contribute to toilet use and maintenance3. Conflicting evidence to the effectiveness of

shared facilities4. Good evidence - for urban sanitation to be

effective it must allow for pit-emptying5. Evidence that sustainability is a major

challenge for WASH

Value for moneycost-effectiveness


1. Limited data on the cost of providing and sustaining WASH services

2. Most cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit analysis focus on diarrhoea as the outcome only

3. An estimate approach suggest that all scenaros provides excellent value for money

4. There is very little evidence to guide decission makers
