Edgy folk rock with a propensity for multi-layered vocal harmonies, Canadian outfit Immaculate Machine are a widely recognised live act. Their often sparse musical backdrop is frequently acoustic, sometimes syntheised, but always rhythmically and tonally positive, resulting in an upbeat musical backdrop that juxtaposes with wistful lyrics.

With something of a chequered history, the group are touring China as a quartet, having recently lost keyboardist and vocalist Kathryn Calder to label-mates and fellow British Columbians, The New Pornographers. Not only that but original drummer Luke Kozlowski recently bid the band farewell too, leaving only one original member, singer-songwriter Brooke Gallupe. Such a radical adjustment of personnel will doubtless result in considerable redirection of a band's sound, and it comes across in their latest release, 2009's High On Jackson Hill.

Calder features as lead vocalist on one track, 'You Destroyer', a longing ode to love lost. It is certainly a beautiful track, her stunningly earnest voice lending the opus one of its most soul-bearing moments ("Great empires fall to the ground, friends turn on each other, how can I make it clear, I am not the wrecking ball."). But if her exit has desensitised their subject matter, it's not a bad thing, as the space left

by her dominant voice has ushered in a harder edge, with louder, distorted guitar breaks and chanted choruses, such as the plodding 'Sound The Alarm', or 70s-infused 'He's A Biter'.

In place of the departed founders, IM have recruited Gallupe's sister Caitlin, along with Sam Albers and new drummer Aden Collinge. The band have already completed a small European tour following Jackson Hill. The album's title is a reference to the place that the band grew up, and where they recorded the album, "We convinced my parents to head to Mexico for a few weeks while we turned the house into a recording studio," said Gallupe after its release. What effect did such a choice have on the recording? "I wanted a natural feeling sound, somewhere we could be relaxed and spontaneous during the recording process." Gallupe used samples of the car revving in the driveway, tested such diverse recording environs as the kitchen and the bathroom, to craft an earthy and wholesome folk offering.

"I don't think anyone would claim to belong to it, but when you put it all together, it is a certain sound. Laid-back hippy grooves, tempos a little slower, rhythms more fluid, and we've tried to embrace it on the new album." Gallupe on the emergence of a distinctive,

Word has it that they're making a documentary of their time touring China, and are expecting to be shown a thoroughly good time in Qingdao.

The Montreal quartet have made waves stateside for their catchy, 90's influenced indie rock, which is so like-able that UK listeners are likening them to the heady Britpop era that was characterised by party bands like Supergrass, while on the other side of the Atlantic, they've been compared to uber-popular nerd-rockers Weezer.

NetbarQingdaonese Rocks!We caught up with former REDSTAR man Steven Madiwen whose involvement in a quadriple-whammy of media moves - namely the ArtEffect zine, Qingdaonese web site, Yellow Rock and Kadenza promotions - have stirred up Qingdao's entertainment scene in recent months.

What is Qingdaonese?

Well first, Qingdaonese.com is a new city blog. We are looking to say, the Shanghaiist for comparison. It's about events, community postings and day-to-day life in Qingdao. Two of the categories are Where To? and How To? We want opinions on the best places to get sought-after products, and how to get things done here. As waiguoren it is often hard to find the right information. I've just written a post on getting your dog licensed for example - where to get the tags, injections and whatever else you need to legally own a dog in China. We'll be doing posts on everything from library cards and coffees to bus passes and visas.

Why did we choose the name? Qingdaonese means of Qingdao, as opposed to Qingdaoren, which is what the locals are. We want guests, friends, residents and locals alike to be involved in spreading their knowledge of Qingdao. I started it with a friend Hunter, also from the US. The two of us also run Yellow Rock, a music promotion company.

What have Yellow Rock done and what are your goals for that project?

The first concert we were involved in was bringing Ziyo to Huangdao, after they played Qingdao in 2008. Since then we've organised and promoted a lot of local concerts, particularly at the Concert Hall through our cooperation with Kadenza, another media group in the area. Last month we brought David Braid, the Canadian jazz pianist, who was exceptional. The most successful event so far was when the Taiwanese singer Chen Sheng played here. He's from the last generation, music that I'm more familiar with, having been here for over 15 years. The Concert Hall was packed!

Looking forward though, we're really interested in helping Chinese bands internationalise themselves. Chinese bands are definitely tech-savvy for the most part, but they might only have a press kit in Chinese for example. One band we sought out was Zhaoze, formerly The Swamp, from Guangzhou. We thought, "Let's pick a band that's not huge, but has potential." They certainly do, and we're helping them get press in the US.

Waiguo voices - Chinesepod.com gives free Mandarin lessons to Ireland

We love this website - not only are their excellent dialogues and educational scripts broken down into well-defined difficulty tiers, and made available cheaply online via podcasts, mp3 downloads and tri-lingual texts (if you count pinyin as a language), but the functionality of their content in day-to-day life is head and shoulders above most of the stuffy textbooks your average Chinese language school will bestow on you when you baoming.

They recently went one step further - noting the sorry state of affairs in Ireland's financial sector, Chinesepod launched free Chinese lessons for Ireland until May 2010! The site, which was co-founded by Irishman Ken Carroll, argue that providing this linguo-cultural inroad to the world's fastest growing economy will be effective towards Ireland's long-term economic recovery. Good call Mr. Carroll, you sure ain't no scrooge. Unfortunately, if you're not Irish, you need not apply, and if you are and haven't already, then sorry, but you're too late - last month was the cut off for this pioneering project. Still, we think their generosity deserves a mention, and who knows? If they get enough press for their offer, then perhaps other Chinese educators might follow suit. When he was still living in his native Korea, Dr. Kim SungJin often spent time in village medical clinics, working with farmers. As a well-regarded chest specialist at Korean National Tuberculosis Research Institute in Seoul, he knew that the frontline against many diseases was here among those who are not reached by networks of hospitals and public health campaigns. After retiring in Korea at the age of 70, Dr. Kim accepted an invitation to Jinan to consult with Shandong health officials about how to stop the spread of tuberculosis. While traveling around the province he stumbled upon Qingdao, with a vibrant community of his countrymen badly in need of Korean-speaking medical care, and relocated here to consult with the Centers for Disease Control, thinking that he could live here for one year and return home. In 2004, he and American Dr. Ron Harbrook opened the International Clinic at Qingdao Municipal Hospital, making care available locally in foreign languages for the first time.

Still, Dr. Kim wanted to serve at times outside of the hospital, outside of the Korean community, beyond the reach of Qingdao's health system. There are many outlying areas nearby without adequate medical expertise, and where subsistence wages make it difficult to pay for regular consultations and treatments like antibiotics. Dr. Kim wanted to visit villages, but he wasn't personally equipped to see to all conditions himself and it was extremely challenging to coordinate. After a few years, he started inviting Chinese doctors to go out with him, and the programme has continued to grow. Dr. Kim and his colleagues joined Chinese Red Cross in November 2007 to create the Qingdao Municipal Red Cross Society, which is presided over by Vice Mayor Wang Shulin and co-led by Su Hai Yin.

Now, forty-five service-minded volunteers (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, administrators) head out to the village every month, from a roster of over two hundred individuals registered in the medical corps. They are able to see four hundred patients

It is better to give than to receive. Winter-time festivals around the world are marked by sharing of food, gifts and cash, especially as people do their best to share 'the Spirit of Christmas'. But even as many people feel like they have to struggle to find the perfect earrings, video game or mobile phone for that special someone, the beginning of winter poses real challenges for many people in the world who live on low wages and cannot purchase adequate shelter, clothing or food. For many of these people, missing a day of work is not an option, and they struggle constantly to give their own children an education that will improve their chances against cold and hunger.

It can be difficult enough to support people in our own families and communities. Those of us who are literate, employed, living in a place like downtown Qingdao are probably rather far removed from the kind of poverty that threatens lives. But there are enormous needs, within our own city and far, far away. In recent years, great people in Qingdao have created powerful organisations to provide some help to people who need it, in hope of making life a little bit easier for those people now, and creating a brighter future for all of us.

A recent project that has been developing within the village visits is a hypertension workshop headed by Dr. Edward Chi, an American specialist in the field who works full-time at the International Clinic. Often undiagnosed, hypertension is a contributing factor to fatal occurrences like stroke and heart disease. Dr. Chi is training local physicians to find and treat individuals with hypertension, saving lives in the process.

There are several ways to support Qingdao Red Cross. Anyone can apply to volunteer with the medical corps, to participate in one of the monthly rural clinics according to their talents and interests. Volunteers are also needed at Happy Shop, the Red Cross auxiliary located in Laoshan District (address below) - every yuan spent in the shop goes directly to funding Qingdao Red Cross programmes (so if you buy things, you're also helping).

Cash donations are also greatly appreciated, as Qingdao Red Cross supports other medical outreach efforts, both locally in Qingdao and through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Local programmes include operations for children with congenital heart disease, typically providing treatment for one child each month at a cost of 10,000元. Qingdao Red Cross also supports education for autistic children, giving scholarships for kids to attend a special training centre in the Fushanhou neighbourhood.

Donations can be earmarked for a particular international relief project (for example, fighting the recent dengue outbreak in Cape Verde, or to ongoing tsunami relief efforts), and the local group will forward the funds to their colleagues elsewhere. I-Fund 爱基金

In 2007, a group of Qingdao businesspeople and artists banded together to combine their city's elite culture with the joys of charitable giving. Founded in association with the Qingdao General Charity Institution, I-Fund (爱基金) raises funds for those in need by organising hikes, golf parties, and yacht-side auctions. Members and partners donate their time and resources to develop opportunities for giving that go as far in providing a great time as they do to changing the lives of people in need.

While many of their fundraising activities take place in Qingdao's high-class venues, the resources that flow through I-Fund's activities are essential to providing education and healthcare for children in rural areas, and supporting disaster relief efforts around China. The organisation raised 370,000元 for earthquake relief in 2008, and in 2009 visited Sichuan to witness the impact of the tragedy and the effects of their support. This year an affiliated logistics company transported 20,000 textbooks, cash for living expenses, and other school materials (along with several I-Fund committee members) to children in Guizhou who had publicised their needs on a local television programme. Most recently, a fundraiser on 20 October brought 1,130,000元 in a single evening, with 500,000元 coming from a single anonymous donor.

Liu Qing 刘青 regularly serves as a coordinator of awareness-raising events, and auctioneer. She was

part of the delegation to Guizhou, and has learned that distance doesn't diminish the severity of needs, or the positive impact that giving can have on everyone involved. "It can be hard to think of really being able to help people who are far away," she said, "but if you have the opportunity to meet them, to look in their eyes and get a sense of the difficulties that they face, and then put something in their hands that so greatly improves their life, it makes you realise how close we really are."

I-Fund's membership is primarily Qingdaoren who not only represent the compassion of their city to far flung destinations, but also put their civic pride to work in our own area. A recent project to this end has been the Hope School (希望小学) in Jiaozhou, which, when finished next year, will offer provide a tiered fee schedule to help disadvantaged students receive a quality education.

"Our motto is 'Joyful Charity, Study Assistance and Help to Those in Need' (快乐慈善 助学帮困)," Liu Qing continued. "The joy goes all the way through what we do, from the activities that pull resources together, to the experience of sharing on the other end."

爱基金创办于2007年，是由青岛商人、艺术家和青岛慈善总会一起联合创办的具有创新文化特点的慈善组织。爱基金通过组织徒步旅行、高尔夫派对、拍卖、游艇体验之旅和其他高格调的活动来筹集资金。爱基金的成员无偿地奉献他们的时间和资源来组织这些活动，使慈善活动更具趣味性和吸引力。

Qingdao Expat Charity

One of the trademarks of charitable giving is that it often moves beyond traditional networks of friends, family and can cross national borders. For several years, the Qingdao Expat Group has provided opportunities for expatriates living in Qingdao to connect with other international residents explore the city, get relocation assistance, and participate in a host of parties and cultural activities, for all ages, that are similar to what they might find in their home countries. But as people participate in nights out like the Winter Ball (5 December at Shangri-La), or check out the annual Pantomime (coming in Spring 2010), a portion of their ticket fee is going to school repairs and heart surgeries for children in and around Qingdao.

Qingdao Expat Charity is the arm of the organisation which identifies challenges and finds ways to put Expat resources to work in meeting them. QEC's core members regularly visit schools and hospitals to find what is needed.

Helene Lagendijk-van Oosterbosch is one of the group's coordinators, and appreciates the chance to be involved in improving people's lives. "When we visit schools, the kids look very happy, jumping rope and playing like I remember doing when I was a child," she says, "but some of the facilities can be improved - window frames are old and drafty, toilets are insanitary, and we are glad to take care of these little things on behalf of the children.

"The government provides most of the fees; we try to cover some of the left-over costs like uniforms, books, and other things that can represent a large cost for families."

In addition to the support for students' books and living expenses, QEC also organises for special projects among rural schools, and for children with extraordinary medical needs. They recently replaced the windows on a school in Pingdu so that the heating budget would provide a greater benefit to the students through Winters to come. In September, a dinner was held at Cassani to raise funds for Lv Wenhua, an eight-year old girl with a severe-but-treatable bone cancer whose parents are unable to work to pay her medical bills. That event raised over 10,000元, but more is needed for Lv Wenhua and for other families in situations like hers'.

So why do expatriates feel a need to be involved in the lives of local people, when few of them remain in Qingdao for more than three years before going back abroad? Helene thinks the answer is obvious. "I enjoy my life here," she says. "I have felt very welcomed by China and Chinese society, and many of us here as expats are very happy for an opportunity to give something back to this country while we are here as guests."

我们慈善委员会中的所有人都为自己能帮助改善当地居民的生活贡献一份力量而感到自豪和骄傲。我们喜欢这里的生活，岛城人民给过我们很多关心和照顾，我们很高兴能有机会来回报我们正在旅居的这个国家。

In November one of the world's top rock climbers joined a couple of China's own best on a stopover in Qingdao, and checked out the pink granite outcroppings around Laoshan.

Olga Shalagina hails from Odessa, Ukraine and during the past few years she has consistently stood upon the podium at worldwide rock climbing championships, often taking home medals in bouldering (climbing more difficult shorter routes without a rope, just pads below), speed (climbing up a longer route in a head-to-head race to the top) or lead climbing (longer routes with use of a rope and harness and the climber clips in as they head up with a belayer below). While in Qingdao, Olga took the time to squeeze in a few questions with REDSTAR as she gracefully crawled up some slanted crags on a hill just north of Shilaoren Beach.

Is this your first time to climb in China?I guess it is my third time now. I was here back in July to compete in the World Championship in Qinghai province, and I climbed in Shanxi a few years back. But this is my first time in Qingdao.

How did the Climbing World Championship in Qinghai turn out for you? The event was very well run and I had a really good time. Actually, I have never experienced such a hospitable host for a climbing competition, it was great! It was also a tough competition this year, as there seem to be more and more Chinese climbers on the scene, so it made for a fierce battle. I placed second in bouldering.

Obviously you must be on a vigorous work-out routine, and am guessing you must need to count your carbohydrates, etc, but have you been able to slip in a sip of Tsingtao Beer? Of course I have tried it, and it's very nice! Actually, my next tournament won't be until next spring, so I am kind of on holiday right now. Even when it gets closer to tournament time, I don't have to be too strict with my diet and training. I just do what I love, and that is climbing. But I also need vacations from that, so I do some swimming and other types of exercise to maintain both my mental and physical health.

Where do you usually climb? I usually climb at Crimea or Nikita back in Ukraine. My favourite place to climb is in Fontainebleau outside of Paris. And then I also like to climb in Italy and Spain.

Also in town were Zhang Ning (张宁) and Wang Dingguo (王定国) both Shandong natives that currently live in Shanghai and are a part of the Shanghai East-Asia Rock-Climbing Team (上海东亚

攀岩队). They both started learning how to climb several years ago in Jinan at an artificial wall while in

university. They are quickly climbing up the ranks at both national and international competitions and it will be exciting to see their ascent alongside with China's growing interest in outdoor sports.

The Blue Yonder 美丽的海底世界From Qingdao to the Philippines 潜水俱乐部 Photos © Mark Cox

It's damn cold here but apparently scorching in the Philippines, so if one had the choice why stay in Qingdao? Aaron Gillespie, an on-off resident of our fair city for the last three years, specialises in SCUBA (that's Self-Contained-Underwater-Breathing-Apparatus) dive training and frequently makes the 2,000km southwards migration from our sailing city to the Philippines, accompanied by aeroplane-loads of eager mainland students. We caught up with him to get his thoughts on diving with dolphins, chancing on shipwrecks and breaking records in shark-ridden Asian waters.

Tell us about what you do? Currently I'm based in Qingdao and travel around China offering SCUBA diving instruction to anyone interested in taking up the sport. I teach anyone, from people who've never been in the ocean - I've even taught people to swim first - right though to professional levels including

instructors. I also do technical

courses which cover the use of different breathing gases such as enriched air, which has a higher oxygen content, and tri-mix where we add helium in order to dive to deeper depths. This also covers decompression diving where we must make certain stops at required depths before surfacing to avoid any complications. I tend to teach most of the classroom sessions here in China, then take students to the Philippines to do all the water skills and diving.

What are the facilities like in the Philippines? Fantastic. There is a large expat group there that run very slick dive operations. I'm affiliated with PADI 5-Star Dive Resorts and technical agencies that offer the best equipment and high-grade filling facilities. These are world recognised resorts and facilities. There is a diverse range of accomodation suitable for backpacker budgets through to corporate clients and large groups. The diving is some of the best in Asia and has reefs that rate in the top ten in the world. Dives from 3 meters through to 300+ meters are all at the doorstep of the resorts or within ten minutes by boat so everything is really convenient.

Who are your main customers? I can teach anyone and groups of any size. My oldest student was 72 years old and my youngest was 8. My main clientele now is the Chinese market and surprisingly, about 40% are female. I've just returned last month where I took 80 international students from Hong Kong and taught them Openwater, Advanced Openwater and speciality courses but in general i like to keep the groups down to 6-10 people. That way everyone gets better diving and it's more direct teaching. In China the sport is fairly new so most of my focus is on recreational diving. The majority of the Chinese students I've taught have come back to further their diving levels and are now hooked on it. My Chinese is not fluent but i know enough to teach in Mandarin and have taught students that don't speak a lick of English. When you're underwater there's not a lot of talking so it works out well!

How long have you been diving? I first tried SCUBA under the guidance of my father at nine years old, but took up the sport on a regular basis when i was twelve so I've got about twenty-seven years of diving experience. I became certified at fifteen and have been instructing for more than thirteen years at three different organisations, PADI, PSAI and IANTD.

What is it about the sport that attracted you? It's a whole different world down there and some of the sea life is just so alien. It's very peaceful and a great way to enjoy mother nature at her best. Our Planet is 73% water so you can just about go diving anywhere. Strange that we call it Earth when we really should call it Planet Water!

What is the most amazing experience you've had while diving? I've done over four thousand dives, and over a thousand of them below 66m so I've done lots of dives that have blown me away. Diving on Japanese World War II wrecks and finding trucks, rifles and swords was a great

experience. Diving with whales, dolphins, seals and sharks is a real thrill. I've had two four-metre hammerheads and about twenty reef sharks join our dive group, and although it was pretty nerve racking it's something i'll never get over. The biggest thrill however was when John Bennett and I set the South-East Asia deep dive record of 122m (400ft) some years back. A lot of people were against what we were doing but with the support of our dive friends we pulled it off and quietened our critics. John later went on to become the world deep dive record holder with a dive of 308m (1000ft), while I went to the US and trained in cave diving... Just getting in the water is an amazing experience.

Great Winter Dishes 冬日家常菜

Earth's Three Treasures consist of eggplant, potato and hot bell pepper, which by themselves are pretty plain, but deep-fried beyond healthy hope and enlivened by a smothering of Hong Shao-style sauce (see sidebar) swiftly take on a more epicurean appeal. Here's how to make it!

Skin eggplant, peel potatoes, wash peppers. Chop eggplants into chunks, potatoes into slices and peppers into angular shards. Smother eggplant chunks in cornflour.

Fill a deep pan with oil, and incinerate until contact with water produces a deafening crackle. Carelessly fling in the cornflour-smothered eggplant chunks and fry until golden brown. Remove from oil with a slotted spoon and throw in the potato slices. Put the eggplant back in for 1-2 minutes, then add peppers and fry for a further minute. Remove, drain oil leaving a little in the pan.

Hong Shao-Style SauceThis little gem crops up in a lot of dishes and is remarkably easy to make. Our chef began with the leftover hot peanut oil, to which garlic (about a clove) and ginger (similar size) were added. The remaining ingredients are all added at the same time - salt, sugar, rice vinegar and lao chou, which is a very dense, dark and salty soy sauce. After heating through and reducing to a viscous consistency, add the vegetables and stir, coating

them in the sauce.

红烧酱很多菜肴都会用红烧酱上色增味，其实红烧

酱很好做。继续往锅内剩油中加入蒜泥（大约一瓣

蒜）和姜末（与大蒜相同份量）爆香，然后添加其

他的调料-盐、糖、米醋和老抽（一种稠、黑和咸

的酱油），加热至粘稠状时放入煎好的

茄块、土豆片和青椒丁翻炒上色。

地三鲜的原料为茄子、土豆和青椒。原料很普通，

但经过油炸及红烧酱（请见花絮新闻栏）的上色，这

道菜肴看起来十分诱人可口。下面我们介绍地三鲜的

做法。

茄子去皮切块裹淀粉、土豆去皮切片、青椒洗净

切丁。

平锅入油（铺满锅底为宜），七成热时放入裹了淀

粉的茄块，炸至金黄色，漏勺捞出备用。再将土豆片放

入锅中炸至金黄色。然后将已炸至金黄的茄块回锅与

土豆片一起煎炸1-2分钟，再放入青椒煎炸一分钟，将

茄块、土豆片和青椒丁捞出，。最后将锅内的油倒出，

仅留少许做红烧酱。

1. In a few tablespoons of hot peanut oil, shallow-fry the beef until it is part cooked (around 2-3 minutes), then add the garlic.2. Add the chopped tomatoes, ketchup, sugar, salt, stock powder and water, stirring until piping hot.3. After allowing to reduce, add a few teaspoons of cornflour to 50ml water out of the pan, and stir. Pour the white liquid into the soup to thicken.

NB. Replace the steak with pork strips, mushrooms and tofu, and the tomatoes and ketchup with rice vinegar and white pepper (hujiao fen) to make hot and sour soup (suan la tang).

几茶匙淀粉后翻炒，把白色的淀粉汁加入汤内增加汤

的粘稠度。

附注：还可用猪肉块代替牛肉块，再加入蘑菇、西

红柿、西红柿酱、米醋、胡椒粉来来制作酸辣汤。

What you need to set upFeasibility study reportThe feasibility study is one of the first steps in the application process. Environmental protection valuation reportThe Environmental Protection Bureau will issue you a document that is intended to control manufacturing production processes in accord with specified environmental norms. The bureau will require information about the raw materials used, the machinery and equipment, and consumption and safe disposal of toxic products. Please note that all assembly and manufacturing WFOE applications must obtain approval by this bureau. In some cases, a full report on the environmental impact issued by an appointed agent shall be required (for example, the leather processing business) and this may represent a major step to go through as it would affect the time frame to get your factory up and running.

Key articles of associationThe articles of association is one of the most important documents in establishing a WFOE. Qingdao's office market saw steady improvement over 3Q, primarily spurred by demand from domestic firms over the last quarter. Foreign companies are also looking to expand, or 'right-size', into more cost-effective buildings.

Five Grade B office buildings will come into operation by the end of 2009, namely Porsche Center, and SEAO Int'l in Shinan, Qingdao International Development Center and Dragon International Center in Laoshan, and Huangdao International Trade Center in Huangdao which amount to a total area of 181,000m². The sudden increase in supply coupled with the pre-existing surplus has resulted in landlords of recently completed buildings offering tenants more attractive leasing terms, such as extended rent-free periods and other incentives. The vacancy rate for Grade A stock is relatively high, which is due to The Shangri-La Centre coming online in 2Q, while the vacancy rates for Grade B stock are lower, and range from approximately 5-20%.

Grade A space, average rental (RMB/m²/month) – RMB 118 (down 4.8% from July figures)

The local retail market is to be significantly increased with the opening of four projects before the end of 2009, consisting of a total area of 205,000m². These include the Marina City and Qingdao Fisherman’s Wharf in Shinan, Vans Department Store in Shibei, and QDZ International Trade Center in Huangdao. The completion dates of these projects among others have been pushed back due to decreasing demand from retailers in lieu of the economic crisis.

We have noted that the local economy, which is heavily reliant on exports, has significantly affected residents' buying power, particularly in the area of luxury goods. Much of the new retail stock is catered to the mid-end consumer.

High-end retail space, average rental (RMB/m²/month) – RMB 505 (up 1.6%)

The high-end residential market has been more active this quarter, with the sales rate reaching 33%, and the average sales price of luxury and high-end apartments increasing over the previous quarter.

628 luxury units launched for presale in the last quarter, primarily consisting of Golden Coast residential complex, west of Fushan Mountain and north of Ningxia Lu and Ruina Zuiyu, behind the well known HiSense Gold Coast Development.

Do you want to know a secret? I know where to find the jolly, white haired man with the toy shop! Now he may not have elves working along an assembly line, but he does have wall to wall shelves full of toys and games. To end the suspense - the toy shop is called Tou Da Toys Bar, and the jolly, white haired man is the store owner Mr. Yan.

I came across this little gem while perusing some of the shops in the Jusco underpass. Joined by other fellow shoppers I walked into the store and instantly witnessed magic – literally. Tou Da Toys Bar not only sells toys and games, but magic tricks as well. It is the tricks and magic demonstrations put on by Mr. Yan that really sets this toy shop apart from others. According to Mr. Yan the toy store has been open for approximately three years, although he has been practicing magic since he was a young boy. He stocks an assortment of tricks (including some traditional Chinese magic) with various difficulty levels. All of the items in Tou Da Toys Bar are reasonably priced as well, especially when it comes to the mysterious ones.

Mr. Yan explained to me that when it comes to magic, “the price includes the secrets of the trade”. When asked what his favourite magic trick is, Mr. Yan had a hard time picking just one, and said that he likes anything that puzzles the mind. That’s the great thing about magic; it is fun and intriguing at any age. Mr. Yan may not be Santa Claus, but he sure can help you pick out a great gift for anyone on your list during this holiday season.

一尝永难忘云南菜

The Chinese Province of Yunnan borders Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, and the local cuisine is blessedly infused with the chillies and curries and limes that many people associate with Southeast Asian cuisines. A further prominent feature is the rich variety of flavourful mushrooms that sprout throughout the province, especially in the humid months of June and July. Order any of these flavours wrapped in a banana leaf, or put them in a clay pot with spareribs, or just eat a plate-ful of morel mushrooms, washed down with a few jars of zesty rice wine (warming, in spite of its low alcohol content) and you'll likely agree that 'Impression' is an appropriate name for this classy new addition to Qingdao's palate, located on the third floor of the Top Yihe building near Shangri-La.

We started with salads and cold noodles, and enjoyed the lettuce and radishes tossed in a blend of chillies, vinegar, lime, and some sort of roe, that was delicious. The noodles were alright, but looking back they pale in comparison to what was to come. Another fascinating appetiser was a mushroom soup, made strictly from mushrooms, water and gouqi berries, that was as rich as beef bullion but undoubtedly better for circulation.

The star of the show was a plate of grilled steak medallions (I counted no fewer than twelve) in a festively flavourful orange curry sauce, flanked on one side by roasted apples, and on the other by slices of roasted mushroom trunk. At 58元, this was a perfect entrée

The service was very attentive, ensuring that our jars weren't empty of rice wine until there wasn't any left in the massive bamboo pitcher. Food began arriving within five minutes of our order (granted it was not a busy time, but that's always refreshing), and as far as flavours are concerned, I found myself reminded of friends who would really enjoy a particular dish. (In fact, as I looked at the menu, I marveled at the diversity of vegetarian options - meat is used sparingly, while mushrooms reign.)

Impression has a sister store on Sanlitun in Beijing, and management here hopes that the concept will catch on here in Qingdao. To this end they have avoided using the heavy zira flavours that one finds in Wensan or other places outside Kunming and Lijiang. They've created a menu that isn't flashy by any means, but covers an impressive range with dishes and beverages that are deeply satisfying. Highly recommended.

unique in that respect. But it wears its global pedigree on its sleeve, sending two East Asian superstars halfway across the world to play gray-market importers. The eldest of the pair, Yuda (Anthony Wong), is a long-established Chinese-Brazilian and big wheel in São Paulo's pirated-goods industry; his adoptive son Kirin (Joe Odagiri) is perfectly at home in this world.

For an arthouse flick, City is disarmingly faithful to gangster/crime-movie tropes - up to a point. Yuda and Kirin are double-crossed by competitors (one improbably named "Mr. Taiwan") and crooked politicians. Creative tools of intimidation (crocodiles!) are employed. Kirin comes to reject his father's outmoded ways. A disreputable-but-big-hearted love interest (Tainá Müller) complements all the machismo. It pretty much runs on autopilot - again, to a point.

But even when it sticks to the template, there's always something off. Shooting in HD, Yu ignores prevailing realist trends and drenches the movie in dayglo coloring, plus awkwardly dubbed Portuguese for the Asian actors. Actual locations mix with greenscreens and old

notions of 'realness' (real Chinese, real Brazilians, real shoes) fall apart in Yu's globalised São Paulo. It's appropriate that the film itself should collapse into inscrutable, possibly imaginary scenes, but Yu lacks the absurdist streak to raise these above pedantry (there's even a mini-lecture in the form of onscreen captions). It's like a brainier version of saying "it was all a dream", nullifying everything but the gorgeous video - the most plastic of all possible outcomes. Appropriate, but the stuff of film maudits and not masterpieces.

introduce Chinese, Japanese or Korean history, culture, society and language. His publisher, Tuttle, is acclaimed for producing such excellent titles. De Mente’s most recent primer on China is worthy. It introduces major thinkers such Confucius and customs like New Year's superstitions about lucky numbers and also looks at Beijing's reforms.

A for practical applications of theory, De Mente is usually reliable. For instance, he warns that many Chinese dislike the hard no, instead claiming to be reflecting, but hoping for the issue to disappear. Such indirectness constitutes 'emotional intelligence' and maintains face.

More deeply, observes De Mente, three types logic exist in China. The Confucian system exalts the family, schooling and knowing one’s station in vertical relationships. Communist logic means political control with economic growth and a flexible interpretation of laws. So think holistically, expect less precision and factor in people's rank, the situation or the official in charge. But the younger Chinese, who are computer addicts, eat fast food and study English, can be more open to Western logic. A list of key vocabulary terms that De Mente offers will smoothen communication, but he strangely omits the tone markers. Also, why not sprinkle in some Chinese sayings or chengyu? Citing the correct one in a given situation is a sign of education and can sway a debate. As an introduction, the book needs a few pictures, a time line for major historical

events and fuller explanations of what philosophers taught. De Mente brooches, say, Daoist ideas such as yin-yang, or the pairing of opposites such as male and female, bitter and sweet. But he is vague on how the idea colours daily life.

电子游戏，他们吃快餐、学英语并且对国际

事务着迷。

但是中国文化博大精深，作者在书中还

应该添加与一些主要历史事情相关的图片和

时间表，同时应该对一些哲学思想和中国历

史上主要皇帝的丰功伟绩做一些更充分的说

明。De Mente在书中谈论了道教的阴阳，

阴阳所指两个对立面（如男与女、苦与甜）

，但他对这些哲理如何影响实际生活的阐述

却模糊不清。另外，De Mente应该在文中

引用一些古老的成语使阐述更形象生动，让

中国人更了解他对语言的运用技巧。

正如作者所介绍的那样，在中国做生意

一定要因人而宜。De Mente 建议外国人在

中国一定要随大流。同时，De Mente警告

说如果在中国有人夸奖你是朋友那就意味着

你必须无条件地同意做任何事情。因此，作

者建议采取明智的中庸之道，即：在做到友

善的同时，又能够维护自己的利益和核心价

值观。De Mente 在书中关于如果碰到麻烦

最好找一下可信的调解人波澜不惊地解决争

端的方法是正确可行的，但作者对中国贪污

受贿对社会的严重损害却忽略不提的态度却

令人不能苟同。值得一提的是，De Mente

列出了对外国人很有帮助的五十个常用中文

词句，如“社会等级”指社会地位；人们培

植了被称作“社会关系”的社会人脉及联系

以获得相互间的帮助。但是很可惜的是，作

者对这五十个常用词没有标出声音声调，众

所周知，声调对正确的发音极为重要。

应该在东西方文化的两端架起一座桥

梁，希望更多像De Mente一样的作者能把

西方的历史、习俗和期望介绍给中国读者。

良和儿子麒麟被黑帮和腐败政客串通欺骗出

鳄鱼）。麒麟拒绝采用父亲过时的方法，泰

娜·毛勒饰演的一个声名狼籍但富有爱心且

大度宽容的麒麟女友的形象，为这部一直

贯穿男人厮杀格斗主题的影片添加了些许柔

情。剧情虽然跌宕起伏，但没特别出乎观众

的意料之外。

尽管影片使用了电影模板，但仍有一

些疏漏。在高清拍摄下，导演余力为忽视了

写实的效果，整个影片一直采用绚丽色调背

景。另外，亚洲演员蹩脚的葡萄牙语的配音

也是影片的另一个缺憾。实际场景因使用绿

幕背景而减少了逼真性，导演余力为刻意地

追求真实感而使用的中国和巴西演员，还有

那些真实的道具鞋在电影巴西圣保罗的背景

地给人一种不真实的感觉。原本应该由电影

本身来阐释剧情，但导演余力为在影片中却

不得不采用了过多的旁白和屏幕字幕。整体

看来，这部影片像一部刻意创作的超现实的

梦幻写意，缺乏真实感。场面宏大背景华丽

但情节场景娇柔做作，不能算是一部佳作。
