Lithium titanium phosphate, LiTi PO LTP , is one 2 4 3 of the promising Li q -conductive solid electrolytes and has been extensively studied because of its potential use in w x all-solid-state lithium batteries 1–11 . Although LTP shows relatively high chemical stability against ambient atmosphere, the ionic conductivity of polycrystalline pure Ž y7 y1 LTP has been reported to be relatively low 10 S cm . w x at 258C for practical use 7,8 . Several researchers have reported the conductivity enhancement of LTP by partial 4q Ž 3q replacement of the Ti ion with trivalent ions In , 3q 3q . w x Al , Sc , etc. 1–8,10 or by the addition of lithium Ž . w x w x salts Li PO , LiNO , etc. 7,9,10 . Aono et al. 7–9 3 4 3 have concluded that the main reason for the conductivity enhancement in both cases seems to be attributable to the increase in the sintered pellet density. For further under- standing of the enhancement mechanism, dense LTP pel- lets without impurity is required. Abstract

Ž . Ž . Ž .Spark-plasma-sintering SPS has been employed in an attempt to prepare dense LiTi PO LTP ceramics consisting of powders2 4 3Ž .obtained hydrothermally. Pellet densities are relatively high, typically 81% of the theoretical X-ray density, compared with those 53% of

conventionally sintered ones. Conductivity of the SPS pellets was improved from ca. 10y8 to 10y6 S cmy1 at 508C by SPS process,mainly due to the increase in the pellet density. Also the SPS technique was effective in producing a LTPrLiCoO stacked pellet with2

clear interface, which may open the possibility of manufacturing all-solid-state lithium batteries. q 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rightsreserved.

1. Introduction

Ž . Ž .Lithium titanium phosphate, LiTi PO LTP , is one2 4 3

of the promising Liq-conductive solid electrolytes and hasbeen extensively studied because of its potential use in

w xall-solid-state lithium batteries 1–11 . Although LTPshows relatively high chemical stability against ambientatmosphere, the ionic conductivity of polycrystalline pure

Ž y7 y1LTP has been reported to be relatively low 10 S cm. w xat 258C for practical use 7,8 . Several researchers have

reported the conductivity enhancement of LTP by partial4q Ž 3qreplacement of the Ti ion with trivalent ions In ,

3q 3q . w xAl , Sc , etc. 1–8,10 or by the addition of lithiumŽ . w x w xsalts Li PO , LiNO , etc. 7,9,10 . Aono et al. 7–93 4 3

have concluded that the main reason for the conductivityenhancement in both cases seems to be attributable to theincrease in the sintered pellet density. For further under-standing of the enhancement mechanism, dense LTP pel-lets without impurity is required.

In addition to the preparation of highly conductive LTPpellets, forming a contact with cathode material, i.e., thepreparation of a stacked pellet LTPrcathode is essential

In the present work, we have employed SPS method toprepare dense LTP ceramics as an attempt to improve theirconductivities without any additives. Hydrothermally-pre-

2. Experimental

LTP was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, as de-w xscribed before 10 . Aqueous solutions of stoichiometric

LiOHPH O, H TiO and H PO were mixed in a silver2 2 3 3 4

tube and allowed to stand in an autoclave filled with waterat 3808C for 5 h. LiCoO was also prepared by hydrother-2

w x Žmal reaction 13 ; CoOOH obtained by bubbling the airŽ . .through Co OH and LiOHPH O were mixed with dis-2 2

tilled water in Teflon beaker and were treated hydrother-mally in an autoclave at 2208C for 10 h. The resultingproducts were washed with distilled water, filtered anddried at 1008C. The powders obtained were subsequentlysintered in the form of disks by SPS using SPS-515SŽ .Sumitomo Coal Mining , as well as by conventionalsintering in a muffle furnace for comparison.

Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of the SPSsystem employed. LTP or LiCoO powders were placed2

Ž .into a graphite die 1.5 cm in diameter and an electriccurrent of 800–1300 A was applied under a pressure of 39MPa. During this procedure, the temperature, monitored atthe surface of the graphite die by pyrometer, increased to

Ž600, 800, 950, 1100, or 12008C depending on the applied. y1current at a rate of ca. 1508C min . After it was kept at

the desired temperature for 3–10 min, the electric currentwas stopped, pressure was released, and the sample was

Žcooled to room temperature it took about one min for.cooling from 12008C to 6008C . For making a stacked

pellet LTPrLiCoO , both powders were placed in layered2

series into a graphite die and sintered by SPS at 6008C orŽ8008C for 3 min. Although the as-sintered pellets 1.5 cm

.in diameter and 0.2 cm in thickness were black in appear-ance, the white appearance of the pellets was restored by

Ž .polishing for samples sintered less than 8008C or byŽannealing in air at 8008C for 2 h for samples sintered

. Ž .more than 9508C SPS-pellets . For the conventional sin-tering process, LTP was pressed into pellets under apressure of 190 MPa and subsequently sintered in air at

Ž .11008C for 3 h CS-pellets .

The pellets obtained were characterized by X-rayŽ .diffractometry Rigaku RINT-1500 using CuKa radiation ,

Žfield emission scanning electron microscopy FE-SEM;. Ž .Hitachi S-5000 with energy dispersion X-ray EDX mi-

Ž .croanalysis Horiba EMAX-5770W , thermogravimetryrŽ .differential thermal analysis TGrDTA; Rigaku TAS200 ,Ž .and infrared spectroscopy IR; Horiba FT-200 . AC

impedance measurements for LTP pellets were carried outusing Solartron 1260 instrumentation, covering the fre-quency range 10y1 to 106 Hz. Prior to electrical measure-

Žments, pellets were coated with Au paste electrodes En-.gelhard A-3360 which were fired on at 7008C for 3 h. All

samples were measured in a homemade cell over thetemperature range 25–3008C after moisture inside the cellwas purged by Ar flow at 3008C. Before recording data,the temperature was kept constant for 15 min to achievethermal equilibrium. The AC conductance was determinedby analyzing the complex impedance plots. No porositycorrection on the electrical conductivity was made for anyof the samples.

3. Results and discussion

3.1. Preparation of LTP pellets

X-ray diffraction patterns of the starting LTP powderand the SPS-, CS-pellets sintered at different temperaturesare shown in Fig. 2. All the profiles of the SPS pelletsshowed the presence of small amounts of TiP O , whose2 7

peak intensities increase slightly with sintering tempera-ture. Since CS pellets sintered at 11008C showed noimpurity phase, TiP O would be formed by elimination of2 7

Li from LTP during the SPS process. Lattice parameters ofLTP in the SPS pellets agree with those of the starting

w xpowder and with those reported previously 7 . Densities ofthe SPS pellets increased with sintering temperature up to

y3 Ž .2.4 g cm 81% of the theoretical X-ray density , largerŽ y3 .than those of the CS pellets 1.6 g cm .

Results from the SEM micrographs of the fracturesurfaces of the pellets, Fig. 3, showed that the CS pelletwas rather porous with an average grain size of ca. 2 mm,similar to that of the starting powder. On the other hand,grains in the SPS pellets were in close contact with each

Žother, and their sizes are relatively large several to ten.micrometers . These observations show that the SPS pro-

cess is effective in improving the linkage between grains,leading to form dense pellets.

Electrical conductivity data are shown in the form ofArrhenius plots in Fig. 4. Conductivity of LTP is drasti-cally improved by the SPS method; conductivity of CSpellets prepared from hydrothermally-prepared LTP was

y8 y1 Žca. 10 S cm at 508C, while that of the SPS 12008C.10 min pellets was about two orders of magnitude higher

Ž y6 y1. Žca. 10 S cm . DC conductivity of SPS 12008C 3. y9 y1min pellets was typically less than 10 S cm at room

temperature, which is less than ca. 0.1% of the AC conduc-Ž y7 y1.tivity value 6.9=10 S cm , indicating that the con-

tribution of electronic conduction in the SPS pellets wasnegligibly small. Also in IR spectrum, 3400 cmy1 band

Žwas not detectable clearly for the SPS pellets 12008C 3. ymin , indicating negligible contribution of OH andror

Hq conduction in the SPS pellets. The increase in conduc-tivity is attributed due to pellet density and thermal treat-ment, Fig. 5. Thus, the SPS process is capable of preparingrelatively high-conductive LTP pellets by densification.

For further investigation of the densification process,DTA measurements were performed on both the starting

Ž .powder and the SPS pellets 12008C 10 min . Endothermicand exothermic peaks at 8038C and 7808C were observedon heating and cooling, respectively, for the SPS pelletsŽ Žboth are lower than the melting point of LTP 11128Cw x..14 , whereas no peaks were detected for the startingpowder. In TG measurements, the weight loss was less

than 1% up to 12008C for both samples. Therefore, it isŽ .reasonable to assign the endothermic peak on heating asŽ .partial melting and the exothermic peak on cooling as

subsequent solidification for the SPS pellets. We havereported similar densification process for LTPqLiNO3

w xcomposite electrolyte 11 , in which Li P O , formed by a4 2 7

chemical reaction of LTP with LiNO , acts effectively for3

the densification of LTP pellets. In the present SPS pellets,the presence of some phase, formed during the SPS pro-cess, would lead to partial meltingrsolidification of LTParound 8008C to form relatively dense pellets, resulting inthe increase in ionic conductivity.

3.2. Preparation of stacked pellets LTPrLiCoO2

Before trying to prepare stacked pellets LTPrLiCoO ,2

we performed the SPS of LiCoO to check the phase2

stability. The SPS pellets sintered at 10008C showed thepresence of CoO and Co O , which would be formed by3 4

the decomposition and reduction of LiCoO , Fig. 6. The2

density for SPS pellets sintered at 6008C and 8008C wasy3 Žtypically 3.1 and 3.3 g cm 61% and 65% of the

.theoretical X-ray density , respectively. Results from thelattice parameters of LiCoO in the SPS pellets agree with2

those of the starting powder. A notable point is the devel-opment of c-axis orientation of LiCoO by the SPS pro-2

Ž . Ž Ž .cess at higher temperatures )8008C see, e.g., 006 orŽ . .009 peaks , which is consistent with the SEM observa-

Žtions development of hexagonal-platelet-like crystals; not.shown . Then we performed the SPS of LTPrLiCoO at2

6008C and 8008C.The use of the SPS process was capable of enabling

close contact of LTP with LiCoO at 600 and 8008C; the2

interfaces of both pellets were clear in appearance. TheŽ .stacked SPS 6008C pellets were rather fragile during

handling as compared with the 8008C-pellets. On the otherhand, conventional sintering of a stacked powderLTPrLiCoO in a muffle furnace resulted in the break-2

down of the pellets at the interface, probably due to thedifference of thermal expansion of both materials. Fig. 7shows typical SEM micrographs and elemental analysis byEDX at the line A–B for the fracture surface of SPSŽ . Ž . Ž8008C pellets. LTP left-hand side , LiCoO right-hand2

. Ž .side , and the third phase located in-between were ob-served and their interfaces are rather clear. EDX resultsindicate that the third phase would be composed of at leastCo, Ti, and O. For identifying the third phase, we per-formed the SPS at 8008C for 3 min for a mixed powder ofequal weights of LTP and LiCoO . The XRD profiles2

showed the presence of CoTiO , Co TiO , and LiCoPO3 2 4 4

as well as other unidentified several peaks. The aboveEDX results suggest that the third phase is CoTiO andror3

Co TiO . Although the SPS condition should be optimized2 4

further so as to form less amounts of impurity phases atthe interface, the SPS method appears to be effective inenhancing contact of LTP with LiCoO . Li metal is at-2

tached to the stacked pellets to form LiCoO rLTPrLi and2

their chargerdischarge measurements are now under study.

4. Conclusions

Relatively dense LTP pellets, typically 81% of thetheoretical X-ray density, were prepared by the SPSmethod. The conductivity of the SPS pellets was typically10y6 S cmy1 at 508C, two orders of magnitude higher

Ž y8 y1.than that of CS pellets ca. 10 S cm , mainly due tothe densification by the SPS process. Stacked pelletLTPrLiCoO with clear interface was also prepared by2

the SPS process, which may open the possibility of manu-facturing all-solid-state lithium batteries.
