The r('~ion in which the majority of the K- mesons stopped was are'~ scanned for aK- and a=- sLars. The pion /racks from the a=- stars were traced back to 1heir point of origin: aK- stars, t,wo-prong stars, scat- tered pions front the beam, etc. If no unambiguous origin was reached in a distance of 20 mm from the a=- Mar, the track was abandoned. Sixty one two-prong stars with ~ second out, going track were found out of 660 pions that were followed in this way. In three eases the second track left the stack. The relnaining 58 with measurable ranges were included in lhe analysis. 1 - Calibration Front an additional scanning per- formed on a~<- stars, 22 protonic decays of the Z+ hyperons at rest were found. Their analysis, using lhe method devel- oped by Flay and WIIITE (1), yielded for the shrinkage factor of our emulsion the value : s~ 2.20 _~ 0.033. the value being referred 1o standard con- ditions in our laboratory, and for the mean range of the decay protons the value : l,' -- (1 676.2 -ZL 7 . 3 ) ~J.m . Independent information on tile shrink- age factor was obtained from an anal- ysis of 53 two-prong st, ars classified as good examples of the A° hyperon decays (see below). Taking into account the random er- rors of the individual QA" values and also their known dependence on the shrinkage factor, we found for the most probable value of the shrinkage factor: s 2 2.23 ~ 0.045.
