PRACTICE HISTORY

Phase V of Brunel University comprises seven new blocks providing student bedrooms, a conference accommodation block and a new arts centre. These robust buildings formed in brick and zinc complement the Sheppard Robson brutalist 1960s buildings they neighbour.

A simple zonal pattern of tightly planned buildings was gradually built up at Brunel University over a ten-year period. A central east-west pedestrian way links the buildings together and the central lecture block dominates the site with its 180-seat lecture theatre.

A 25,000m² headquarters and operational centre for Dun & Bradstreet was developed in the late 1980s. The focus for the working life of the building is a naturally-lit internal street l inking the four office buildings and their central services area.

In the early 1950s Sheppard Robson pioneered the use of concrete shell structures. Swan Hunter in Newcastle i l lustrates how this innovative solution both optimises the structure and achieves a l ight, open workspace.

The Helicon was one of London’s first sustainable buildings to combine retail and office space in a structure that is energy-efficient and economical to run. It was the defining project for the current generation of partners.

The Toyota/Lexus UK headquarters can be seen as a modern parallel of the Swan Hunter in Newcastle. The hybrid concrete and steel structure and mechanically assisted natural ventilation solution made this a multi award-winning building.

The Armani store at 1 The Avenue, completed in 2010, is one of seven Sheppard Robson buildings in the 22-acre Spinningfields office and retail scheme in the heart of Manchester. With retail , offices, nightclub and restaurant, the project represents next generation mixed-use architecture.

Wood Green Shopping City was a ground breaking integrated urban development. Two levels of retail space were designed beneath a residential development known as Sky City. The centre was designed to border and bridge a main road, blending high street and shopping centre.

A new science college and memorial to Sir Winston Churchil l , Sheppard Robson won the competition to design the new Churchil l College campus in Cambridge against a shortlist of 20 proposals in a l imited competition in 1958. The campus was completed seven years later.

The Jicwood Bungalow, designed in 1944, util ised innovative stressed timber skin from the aircraft industry and a prefabricated concept to deliver fast, efficient housing in response to the social needs of the time.

At the University of Manchester, the Alan Turing Building’s sustainable features include a roof structure acting as a roof level plant and suspension system for the photovoltaic array which produces over 40,000 kilowatts per annum – a saving of over 17,000kg of C02 every year.

The Lighthouse is the UK’s first net zero-carbon house to meet Level 6 (the highest level) of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the standard to which all new homes will be designed and constructed from 2016.

SUSTAINABILITY

1. GREENHOUSE ZERO-CARBON OFFICE

2. THE ALAN TURING BUILDING, MANCHESTER

3. PRIVATE HOUSE, WEST SUSSEX

4. THE LIGHTHOUSE, BRE WATFORD

Sustainable innovation has been a founding principle of the

practice and is fully integrated into our design and business

processes. From designing the first zero carbon home to

delivering the greenest office building in the Middle East,

our track record of improving the efficiency of buildings

and spaces is significant and far-reaching.

Our approach to design is driven by the fundamental belief

that sustainability should not compromise function or

beauty. Good design should be informed by an ambition

to improve efficiency and reduce the building’s carbon

footprint and consequently the impact on climate change.

No building, space or place can be considered well

designed if it does not positively contribute to

environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Our design process is robust but flexible to allow a bespoke

response to a client brief and context. Our experience and

belief in the value of sustainable design enable an intuitive

response, which is supported by a rigorous process that

harnesses the benefits of BIM and performance analysis.

PROCESS

Every project at Sheppard Robson is subjected to a series

of design reviews at key stages of its design development.

Objective criteria such as environmental sustainability are

reviewed alongside subjective issues such as compositional

aesthetic resolution. Peer group and design team

consensus provides direction and ensures design quality

is achieved. The design review process is an integral part

of our quality assurance and is linked to our ISO 9001

accreditation.

Marking the start of the pedestrian journey through the new Spinningfields quarter,

the award- winning 1 The Avenue is pivotal in form and location, tying Manchester ’s

retail and business district with its civic core. The building was designed in

response to its urban context and as a flagship mixed-use building. Armani occupies

the ground and first floors, with a nightclub in the basement and boutique offices

and a roof terrace above. The scissor geometry of the building’s form responds to a

duality of desire l ines and is immediately apparent in the dramatic cantilever on to

Deansgate. The angled upper storeys realign the east-west axis towards Hardman

Square at the heart of Spinningfields, and the lower levels direct pedestrians

towards the new entrance to the John Rylands Library. 1 The Avenue received a

BREEAM Excellent rating and the building's regulated energy consumption is just

78KWhr/m²/yr.

The pioneering design of The Alan Turing Building represents the aspirations of

the University of Manchester as one of the world’s leading research institutions.

Housing the Departments of Mathematics, Photon Science and Astronomy, the

building is formed of three blocks or ‘sl iding fingers’ which protrude and recede,

creating a dynamism further enlivened by cantilevered projections. Each level of

accommodation is expressed as a zinc-clad ingot with flush, horizontal slot glazing,

while extensive glazing at ground level has created active frontages. An oversail ing

roof structure unifies the three blocks and supports a photovoltaic array which

provides 40,900kWhr per annum, translating into a potential saving of 17,000kg of

carbon dioxide each year. The atrium linking two of the blocks houses lecture rooms

and social spaces at ground level.

The new public study space, which links the l ibrary, Learning Commons and the

administrative heart of the campus at the University of Manchester, has been

designed to give students a focal point for learning, offering a stimulating and

comfortable 24/7 environment for study. Boasting more than 1,000 flexible study

spaces, Alan Gilbert Learning Commons provides an inspiring range of equipment

and furnishings for individual and group study.

The principal sustainability objective was to minimise the building’s emissions

of CO2. Heat loss will also be limited by high thermal insulation performance;

natural ventilation is used where possible; heat recovery systems limit the amount

of heating and cooling of fresh air; daylight is maximised and energy efficient

appliances and systems will be used. There are also photovoltaic ti les on the roof,

whilst solar thermal systems provide hot water for the café.

The project – situated within the Westminster Conservation Area – creates a bold

design addition to the rooftop of this prominent London building. The dramatic

pavil ion-like structure, made up of a series of geometric-folded forms, will provide

around 8,500sqft of high-quality office and reception space. The extension will rest

on the building’s existing mansard roof and the structure will be clad in zinc with

carefully positioned glazing to frame views towards Southbank and the City, whilst

also controll ing solar gain. The design has been carefully considered so the new

roof responds to the classical composition of the buildings main elevation.

At 140 hectares, Barking Riverside is one of the UK’s largest residential

regeneration schemes. Sheppard Robson has designed the 45-hectare phase

one masterplan which will deliver the first 1 ,400 of a total 10,800 homes.

Neighbourhoods will vary in character and density and all homes will be designed

to surpass current standards. The energy-efficient houses in Buzzards Mouth Courts

will range from traditionally laid out terraces to innovative, l inear houses wrapping

around a central garden. Some houses will have back gardens that lead directly into

shared courtyards, while others will open onto welcoming home-zone streets with

pedestrian priority. Frontages have been designed to create natural surveil lance,

and openings between blocks will allow access from different sides, encouraging

the local community to use the courtyards and play areas.

LONDON EC1, UK

66,000m2

£210m

2019

Barts Square presents a rare opportunity to create a sustainable, truly mixed-use

development in the City of London. The development will provide 216 apartments

alongside 34,000m2 office and retail space. The site is one of the most significant

in the City in terms of the quality and character of the architecture in the

immediate vicinity, including the Grade I l isted mediaeval church of St Bartholomew

the Great and its cloisters, and the Grade II* l isted St Bartholomew’s Hospital,

the oldest hospital in London, designed by James Gibbs in the mid-18th Century.

The design for the development enhances these qualities through a sensitive yet

contemporary reinterpretation of the existing fabric, seamlessly knitting-in where

required, and creating new architectural statements where appropriate. The public

realm will be reanimated and transformed into a useable, permeable and highly

legible environment.

31,500m2

2011

The design of the BBC's new home in the North started with ID:SR and a BBC

working group thinking about how they could create a workplace that’s a thriving

urban neighbourhood. As the BBC began to plan the move of 2,300 posts to their

new centre at MediaCityUK in Salford they commissioned ID:SR to design a home

for the corporation that would reflect the incredible creativity of its people and the

content they create. Applying their activity-driven design approach, ID:SR worked

with the BBC to create a design solution that would allow them to work more

effectively and creatively in less, more efficient space. BBC North offers a variety

of work settings which properly reflect how each of its departments really works.

By reimagining the office as a city, ID:SR has devised a new workplace which is

amenity-centric rather than desk-centric, and which is enlivened by the way people

share its spaces and amenities.

£105m

PHASED FROM 2014

As masterplanner and architect, Sheppard Robson led the design of Manchester

Metropolitan University’s new Birley Fields campus. The campus will provide teaching,

office and research facil ities alongside student accommodation, an energy centre and

42,000m² of new public realm. Its focal point will be the new academic building for the

Faculty of Health, Psychology & Social Care and the Institute of Education, providing 6,500

students, researchers and lecturers with a modern teaching and learning environment.

The key design themes for the building are openness, informality and the dissolving of

barriers between the community and higher education. It will be clad in a veil of glazed

white ceramic and fritted glass panels which change in density across the facade and lift

to reveal the community-accessible spaces on the ground floor. Birley Fields is located on

a prominent gateway to Manchester and will become a beacon for the promotion of higher

education in the city.

The architectural ambition of the project is to create a building that respects the

neighbouring listed buildings and surrounding conservation area whilst also adding a

confident piece of contemporary design to Bristol.

To achieve this, the building is arranged in two parallel wings, with the east-facing element

housing the office accommodation and responding to the proportion and massing of the

adjacent l isted buildings. Distinctly different in form, the west-facing wing is designed as

an undulating aluminium wall, signifying the cutting-edge laboratory space housed in that

part of the building. The two elements of the building are l inked by a full height atrium

space, which forms the social heart of the building.

Sheppard Robson's £40m housing scheme on Camden Road for client Barratt London

will include over 160 new homes - fifty percent of which will be affordable housing

- and create a major new architectural addition to this prominent London junction.

Situated on the corner of St Pancras Way and Camden Road, the seven-storey brick

building will be animated by the two top levels being clad in corten steel. The change

in form and materials will decrease the massing of the block whilst also creating an

interesting skyline for the project. The design of the upper levels allows for the inclusion

of large communal landscaped rooftop terraces. The housing is organised around two

courtyards – designed to be calm, tranquil spaces in this prominent urban setting – that

provide an alternative access point to the generous reception space on St Pancras Way.

Camden Town Unlimited (CTU) is the Business Improvement District (BID) for

Camden Town. Responding to a 20% reduction in footfall in Camden’s Central

Business District in recent years, CTU appointed Sheppard Robson to undertake

a Masterplan for the High Street between Chalk Farm and Euston Station to

rejuvenate the area’s cultural and commercial offer.

Camden High Street has a surprising mixture of businesses, with the vast majority

of these being offices rather than the retail and leisure businesses frequently

associated with the area. Local businesses are keen to see more affordable

housing in the area, ensuring that there is the opportunity for employees to l ive

closer to their work and at the same time participate in the broader community.

ID:SR’s multi-phased refurbishment of Channel 4’s iconic headquarters has

succeeded in creating a socially vibrant, collaborative workplace for Channel

4 employees, in keeping with the culture of an organisation that resists the

constraints of corporate culture. In addition to improving the working environment

and future proofing the building infrastructure, the building’s occupancy has been

increased by over 50%, consolidating Channel 4 staff into the headquarters.

The headquarters is an award-winning Richard Rogers building and so ID:SR’s

design also needed to be sympathetic to its original concept and aesthetic.

Undertaken in 36 phases, it is no mean feat that the project has been delivered

step-by-step during full occupation while maintaining business continuity.

roll ing out a new chain in the UK offering affordable luxury. The nine-storey, 370-key

hotel will stand directly across from the World Heritage Tower of London and adjacent to

the remains of the Roman city wall . The design is contemporary, but careful modulation

of the building’s elevation has ensured that it responds to its sensitive historic setting.

A café, bar, restaurant and meeting spaces are included in the scheme and a landscaped

café terrace will overlook the Roman ruins. Innovative design solutions will reduce carbon

emissions using renewable energy technologies and new construction techniques. The

bedrooms will be prefabricated and will arrive fully functional to site. citizenM Tower of

City Quarter, phase one of Sheppard Robson’s masterplan for Goodmans Fields on the

east City boundary, comprises 294 contemporary residential units set within a new-build

complex and a converted Grade II l isted Victorian warehouse. The five new buildings

range in height from five to eight storeys and enclose three dynamic external spaces,

including an extensive water garden bridged by timber walkways. The buildings are clad

in white glazed terracotta, while zinc cladding forms a dramatic flank to each building,

creating generous roof overhangs. Modern methods of construction, including a high-

performance, modular, timber-framed structure and off-site manufactured bathroom

pods, improved the buildings' performance and appearance. Innovative structural

solutions within the cladding allowed for the simplification of the balcony elements.

Citylabs in Manchester is a joint development between Bruntwood, a commercial property

company and Manchester Science Parks. It is a new concept in high-specification flexible

office and laboratory space that is, set right in the heart of Corridor Manchester, the city’s

knowledge quarter, providing 120,000sqft of bespoke-built biomedical facil ities.

Sheppard Robson was commissioned to design both the building and anchor tenant’s fit-

a new extension block. Due to the l isting, the local planners were very sensitive to any

new additions so the new design needed to be sympathetic to their concerns as well as

providing maximum commercial value for our client.

dense urban fabric of the surrounding neighbourhood and showcases the heritage asset of

the Grade II l isted chapel of the former Middlesex Hospital. Sheppard Robson designed the

masterplan for Fitzroy Place and collaborated with Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands on the

detailed design to create an architectural richness which promotes a sense of identity and

8 Fitzroy Street completes the redevelopment of Arup’s headquarters in central London. The

patterned facade, derived from the motif of a helical DNA strand, dissolves the building’s

mass and creates visual interest across the long street elevations. This patterning also

enabled 50% of the facade to be insulated, fundamental for the use of active chil led beams

instead of a conventional fan pipe air conditioning system. This has contributed to regulated

energy consumption of just 106KWhr/m²/yr. Inside the building the DNA motif is picked

up in a feature glass wall by the artist Alex Beleschenko, rising to the full height of the

central open atrium. A retractable fire curtain at alternate floor levels was commissioned to

accommodate a full-height open atrium creating visual connectivity between each floor and

harnessing a sense of collaboration. Daylight floods through the five storeys of the building

across offices, meeting rooms, a café, a l ibrary and conference and exhibition space.

Sheppard Robson’s new £90m building at 245 Hammersmith Road (formerly Bechtel House)

creates a prominent architectural addition and sequence of new public spaces in the area’s

Business Improvement District (BID). Working for the client Legal & General, the scheme

will provide 22,500m2 of flexible office space and 1765m2 of retail space. Rather than being

a single structure l ike the existing Bechtel House on the site, Sheppard Robson’s design

reduces the mass of the development by forming the building from two parallel wings that

are connected by a central core. The reconfiguration of the development’s plan allows the

new design to be stepped back from Hammersmith Road, creating the opportunity for a

new landscaped space at the front of the development that will be an inviting entrance to

the project. This newly recreated plaza will lead through to a landscaped podium garden,

with a funicular l ift mediating the 8m change of level between the two external spaces.

At 37,000m², 3 Hardman Street is a landmark commercial development in Manchester.

Conceived as a series of four stepping blocks rising from eight to twelve storeys, its highest

point defines the corner of Hardman Square, the heart of Spinningfields. The varied elevations

respond to the scale and rhythm of surrounding buildings including the John Rylands Library

and Sheppard Robson’s own 1 The Avenue. With floorplates ranging from 2,000m² to 3,500m²,

the office accommodation provides the largest speculative floorplate in the city. Each floor

can be divided into two, three or four parts, allowing for optimum flexibil ity. Three separate

entrances on Hardman Street give access to the offices, while retail units open onto the

existing retail street running along Crown Square and linking north to Deansgate. The latest

facade technologies minimise solar gain and heat loss and the building’s flexibil ity will

respond to changing needs for generations to come.

Project Estidama is a highly sustainable 30-storey tower, designed specifically for the Middle Eastern

context. Initial design analysis shows a 40% reduction in carbon emissions compared to standard office/

mixed-use towers in the region. The regulated energy consumption will be just 90KWhr/m²/yr. The building

form was designed using complex parametric algorithms, combining climate analysis with Grasshopper

modelling. A double helix spirals asymmetrically around the central core and creates a self-shading

building form with equal floorplate areas, suited to office, hotel or residential use. The upper surfaces of

the spiral are further optimised for intense solar impact and are laced with photovoltaics. Incorporating an

active double-skin facade, a delicate geometric fi l igree forms a structural diagrid and provides additional

shading to the internal spaces, while reflecting daylight onto the office floor.

tunnel-form construction system has created movement and richness, allowing each flat to project

relative to its neighbours. L-shaped windows provide the study seating with panoramic views.

These robust buildings, formed uniformly in brick or in zinc, complement the Sheppard Robson

The design of Waingels College is innovative in both form and construction. Its driving concept

is of the school as a community and its buildings as a vil lage of learning spaces. Four separate

buildings frame the heart of the school, a vil lage green. Three of the buildings are pastoral

bases or learning communities, while the fourth houses large, shared, communal spaces such as

the assembly and dining halls. Each base also has a smaller heart space for its own community

– a large staircase that can be used as a forum for the pupils. Avoiding long dark corridors in

favour of naturally l it , interconnected breakout areas, spaces are open and flexible, encouraging

cross-curricular interaction. The buildings were constructed using a cross-laminated timber

HOTELS

When designing hotels, we complement our specialist knowledge of the sector by drawing upon our experiences of delivering major mix-used and residential projects. This cross-typology approach results in hotels that resonate with guests whilst being in tune with the marketplace, helping clients harness the value of good design. We are currently designing numerous hotels that use modular construction techniques to deliver major developments in 25% less time onsite and reduce energy consumption by 10%.

Our work designing cities on both a micro and macro level allows us to carefully integrate hotel projects into larger mixed-use developments . Our recently completed Popoko Hotel illustrates how a a major hotel can be knitted together with a broad range of services, including restaurants, apartments, shops, and a corporate headquarters.

ID:SR

ID:SR is Sheppard Robson’s award-winning interior design group.

Our activity-driven design approach puts people at the heart of the design process. Designing for excellence, we aim to create functional, beautiful spaces that are efficient and enhance people’s experience of a place, whether they are to live, work or play in.

Our work with clients starts with a strategic brief. We use this to build a comprehensive understanding of a project and ensure the work we deliver is consistent with the aspirations of the client and culture of an organisation. Whether designing for a private individual or large team, we deliver projects that have a high level of detail and clear, engaging concept. As well as a complete understanding of how design can be used to create remarkable spaces, our holistic range of services also includes Fit-Out, Due Diligence, Space Analysis, and Workplace Strategy; the sum of which is a holistic approach which allows clients to harness the many benefits of careful planning and award-winning design.

SCHOOLS

Does the quality of school building matter? We believe emphatically that it does. Recall your own experience of life at school and the impact the building fabric and organisational structure had on you. We aim to realise the most useful deployment of the budget, harnessing our enthusiasm and experience to deliver the highest quality educational environment – whether state or private, primary or secondary.

UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES

Our portfolio of higher education projects – ranging from full-scale estate strategies to specialist buildings – continues to adapt to the ever-changing political and economic landscapes that shape how estates departments approach development.

From the seminal buildings for Churchill College, Cambridge, over 50 years ago to the recently completed Alan Gilbert Learning Commons at The University of Manchester (winner of the Guardian’s “University Facility of the Year” 2014), the practice has a track record of engaging with the latest pedagogic trends and research. This is combined with a deep understanding of the tradition, culture and heritage of the higher education sector, to deliver award-winning, inspirational buildings and spaces.
