• The outer ear is the part that we can see
• The middle ear connects the outer ear to the inside of our ear
• The inner ear is the part of the ear that we can’t see; it’s the part we use to actually hear

Hearing loss happens when there is a problem with the ear. Problems can happen in different parts of the ear:
• The outer ear• The middle ear• The inner ear
Some people with hearing loss can still hear some things. Other people might not be able to hear anything.

Hearing loss can be caused by a number
of different things:
• Some people are born with hearing loss.
• Other people have normal hearing as a baby but get hearing loss when they are older

• Ear infections• Too much noise• Medication• Injury

There are different types of hearing loss
The type of hearing los depends on WHERE the problem is

If the problem is in the outer or middle ear, it is
called CONDUCTIVE HEARING LOSS

If the problem is in the inner ear, the
nerve, or the brain, it is called
SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS

Some people have hearing loss in one ear. This is called ‘UNILATERAL’ hearing loss
Other people have hearing loss in both ears. This is called ‘BILATERAL’ hearing loss

There are also different levels of hearing loss:
People with hearing loss can have MILD, MODERATE, SEVERE, or PROFOUND hearing loss.

Cochlear implants are for people who need something stronger than a hearing aid to help them hear
People who use a cochlear implant may have a severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss

1. Cochlear implants take sound energy from your environment and change them into electrical signals in your inner ear
2. These electrical signals help your brain understand that this is sound
3. These signals skip past the damaged part of your ear

Sometimes people can’t wear a regular hearing aid because their outer/middle ear doesn’t work very well.
Bone conduction hearing aids make sound from the bone in your skull go right into the cochlea, passing the outer and middle ear

Hearing Assistive TechnologyThese can be used with a hearing device to help you hear better! It helps by making something far away seem closer, it takes away noise in the environment, and it helps you hear better in a room!

The teacher wears a microphone connected to a transmitter. This sends sound to a receiver that is connected to the hearing aid.
