So far, with the rise of population and industrialization, buildings
and infrastructures have been constantly setting in the city, creating a
bleak environment. Thus, in the urban regions of the city, green
g rass has always been a shortag e and has broug ht forth the
discussion on various city environment problems.
Environmental pollution, the deterioration on the city's ecosystem,
and the unpredictable climate changes occurring in the city are some
of the problems caused by the lack of green grass areas. With this
kind of trend in mind, roof-top planting must be implemented in the
city in order to ease the burden of land purchase as well as to solve
the city' s ecosystem and energy-crisis problems.
Roof-top planting harbors an important meaning in connecting the
city' s ' green network', securing the city's nature, and enhancing the
quality of city environment. Also, roof-top planting serves an
important role in the perspectives on the dangers of reduced urban
green space as well on the landscape elements of the high-rise
artificial buildings.

But, the lack of understanding on roof-top planting, its economical
efficiency and other various reasons create many cases where the
roof-top's open space is often served as a space for building
installations, illegal buildings and also sometimes as an easy place to
take care of trash. Thus, the roof-top becomes an obstacle that
obstructs nearby buildings' urban landscape and their environment.
Hence, this research will study the feasibility of roof-top planting
and develop strategies that will encourage roof-top planting.
Chapter 1 describes the research background and the range of the
research.
Chapter 2 utilizes the theoretical study of roof-top planting to learn
about the history of roof-top planting, the domestic and international
trend that use roof-top planting, its economical effects, its effect on
the improvement of the city environment, and food for thought on
roof-top planting.
Chapter 3 investigates the ecological sustainability and durability, and
the types of the roof-planting system that sway the economical
efficiency, and summarizes each of their special qualities.
Chapter 4 studies the laws and regulations relating to roof-top
planting, such as foreign government laws, our country's laws and
local government ordinances that are related to roof-top planting. Also,
this chapter investigates the current status on the local governments'
support on roof-top planting and analyzes the problems relating to
roof-top planting institutions and its supporting institutions.
Chapter 5 investigates cases in which roof-top planting has been
introduced to both foreign and domestic media and how it has
appeared on other materials.
Chapter 6 investigates and analyzes the roof-top planting's plant
species, its utilization, and its management practices through field

surveys conducted on the Seongnam's public government offices that
have been practicing roof-top planting.
Chapter 7 expounds about the ways to invigorate the practice of
roof-top planting such as devising construction-based systems to
support roof-top planting and creating roof-top planting layouts for
different types of building architecture.
Chapter 8 presents its research conclusion.
