PREFACE
Almost everyone agrees on the idea that knowledge is the most important force
at the present time. A process of learning is necessary to have the knowledge and use it
in the right place. Universities are the institutions, found on the last stage of education
and where the education process is carried out both theoretically and practically. Being
aware of this responsibility, Mersin University always aims to carry forward the sense
of education at national and international level, depending the foundation values of
Republic with Ataturk’s principles and revolutions, by the efforts of academic and
administrative staffs. Our university aims to educate its students in this framework as
beneficial to society, participatory and productive individuals with the ability to
transform theoretical knowledge into practical.
As a first department affiliated to our university and underpin the Tourism
Faculty, the School of Tourism and Hotel Management started its educational activities
within the body of Adana Academy of Economic and Administrative Sciences, on April
4th, 1980. In accordance with The Council of Higher Education the school was taken
into the scope of Çukurova University in 1982 and it has carried on its academic
program within the body of Mersin University since April 3rd, 1992. As known;
tourism industry which has a direct connection with socio-economic prosperity and
national, regional and local development contribution can be regarded as one of the
most important means for development. Turkey ranked as the tenth country in the
World Tourism Organisation’s list of the most tourists attracting countries in 2016. The
goal should be to force the top spots in the sense of destination attraction, along with the
ranking of tourism incomes. In this context countries being tourism destination have to
follow the developments in the world continuously and renew their structures according
to new demands and trends. Precisely as this point that future of tourism was brought
into question, the 1st International Congress on Future of Tourism; Innovation,
Entrepreneurship and Sustainability becomes even more important.
I believe that Tourism Faculty which has carried numerous organizations from
the date of its foundation, will run the “1st International Congress on Future of Tourism;
Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability" as successfully as any other
organization hosted by it. Hence, our faculty and congress deserve our appreciation and
support in every sense. I am very glad to host you dear participants in our university and
Mersin via our congress. On behalf of my university and my person, I would like to
thank all colleagues, institutions and sector representatives involved in the preparation
and conduct of this congress in which valuable papers on future of tourism will be
presented.
Prof. Dr. Ahmet ÇAMSARI
Mersin University
Rector
PRESENTATION
Mersin University, Faculty of Tourism is one of the oldest Tourism education
institutions in Turkey. Today, there are 3000 graduates since its foundation in 1980 and
with its new programs, such Gastronomy and Kitchen Arts and Tourism Guidance, we
are ready to serve the future of tourism.
“On the other hand, The First Congress on Future of Tourism: Innovation,
Entrepreneurship and Sustainability (FUTOURISM 2017) has been organized to create
a platform to discuss all the important concepts, issues and problems related to the
Future of Tourism. As being one of the most important industries in the World, we
believe all the stakeholders of the industry must pay the most attention to the future of
this important phenomenon. We call Tourism a phenomenon since we believe tourism
highly deserves this description. It’s one of the biggest employers in the world,
constantly support economies with foreign currency flows and helps underdeveloped
regions in their economic and social growth. Of course, these important contributions
do not happen without a cost. Unplanned tourism growth generally ends up with a
deteriorated environment, sometimes with important social problems and loses of
various attractions including historical buildings, remains of early civilizations, etc.
Societies, governments, municipalities, academicians, tourism enterprises and even the
tourists must work together to keep the sources of tourism sustainable. We believe, The
First Congress on Future of Tourism and other similar congresses have much to do in
contributing to the future of this important industry. I hope this congress will be an
important step toward this goal.
At this point, I want to deeply thank Prof. Dr. Ahmet ÇAMSARI, Rector of
Mersin University for his ongoing support which made FUTOURISM 2017 Congress a
great success. Other important thanks will go to Ministry of Culture and Tourism,
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, Erdemli Municipality, Adra Publishing, MERTID,
ÇUKTOB and METIOD for their generous financial supports to FUTOURISM 2017
Congress. Of course one of the biggest thanks to our Research Assistants for their time
and efforts during the organization and implementation of the congress. I would like to
thank all the academic staff and administrative staff at Tourism Faculty and hundreds of
prestigious academicians who helped us to review around 250 academic papers which
submitted to the FUTOURISM 2017 as well. There are 189 papers presented in the
Congress which made us believe that the academicians in the field of tourism present
great enthusiasm toward a better industry all over the world. I would also like to thank
all participants who presented their academic works in FUTOURISM 2017 and
especially to our distinguished guests and keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Cihan
COBANOGLU, for their contribution and support for the success of FUTOURISM
2017. Of course, our partner universities also deserve a big thank for their valuable
support and hope we can extend this partnership toward better organizations and
activities.
I am so glad to host variety of precious academicians, guests and sector
representatives within Mersin University and in Mersin. I wish you have a successful
conference and excellent time in Mersin, Turkey.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee,
Prof. Dr. Kemal BİRDİR

Abstract
The guidance profession has been known since ancient times. Guidance has a pretty old history, however in our
country the profession of tourist guide has just been recognized as a formal profession with The Profession of Tourist
Guiding Law in 2012. It is observed that the scientific studies on guidance particularly started in the international
literature after 1979. From that day to present it can be expressed that many studies have been performed about the
qualifications, qualities, roles, tasks of guiding. However, it is observed that most of the roles, qualifications, and a
certain compilation of tasks attributed to guide need to be brought in a systematic way and filtered. There are many
different classifications about the qualities that guide should have. Hence, it can be said that this can cause a
complexity in determining attributes of guide. From this point of view, it is found appropriate to make a classification
under the cognitive, affective and behavioral factors by using the literature. This study is believed to obviate the
reference confusion about the classification on quality of guide.
Key-Words: Tourist guide, quality, characteristic, cognitive, affective, behavioral
Introduction
It can be expressed that the guidance profession has a very old history. However, there is a quite difference
between tourist guide who worked at the Olympic Games in ancient times by today's who manages the tours organized
by travel agencies. Human relationships become multidimensional with the civilizing process. It causes differentiation
of tourists expectations from a vacation to another. The profession of tourist guide has just been recognized as a formal
profession with the Profession of Tour Guiding Law in 22.06.2012 and went in effect in 26.12.2014 in our country.
Definition of a tourist guide, guidance certificate program and the expressions about how profession can perform are
included in the Regulations. Nevertheless it has not been presented a holistic and detailed study in researches which
qualifications should have a guide conduct of his/her profession properly. Also there is an uncertainty because of exist
different approaches on the classification of these qualifications. Thus aim of this study is to identify of the qualities of
tourist guides should have and classification of these qualities.

1.1. Conceptual Framework
Tourists go out of the place where they used to live for holiday. They need guidance and information from
shopping to trip (Değirmencioğlu and Ahipaşaoğlu, 2008: 1). Herein tourist guide step in. Professions have been
occurred in order to provide each other with various services they need in their daily life since the old community. It
can be expressed that the essence of the guidance profession make it easy for travelers for their travels. The guidance
profession has existed from ancient times. But the definition of the guidance profession is re-expressed by changing
with the new formations (Çimrin, 1995: 1). Guidance, means to inform people about the unknown and provide
leadership to reach the place in a destination. In general tourist guide is a pathfinder. In this regard, tourist guiding is
involved to make widely known cultures, and visited places, to guide, to provide information related with tourism
(Yazıcıoğlu, Tokmak and Uzun, 2008: 3-4).
World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) described tourist guide as follows:
" A person who guides visitors in the language of their choice and interprets the cultural and natural
heritage of an area which person normally possesses an area-specific qualification usually issued
and/or recognized by the appropriate authority” (World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations,
2003).
Ap and Wong (2001: 551-552) define tourist guide, contains an effective combination of the human character such
as knowledge, personality characteristics, and ethical principles, managing who provide translation and interpretation
by providing leadership to groups in destinations. “Travel” was made possible with the discovery of the wheel and the
money in 4000 BC. Wheel was important; because human could go “farther”. Money was important, because it was
difficult to meet urgent needs such as food with the system of swap on a journey that could be for months (Şen, 2010:
6). The Egyptian priests are the world's first guide in the history written sources. The civilization which most likes to
travel was Romans in ancient ages. The Olympic Games which began in the 7 BC. century, can be considered as the
beginning of the organized trips (Kaynak, 2013: 31). The mass travel started by the reason of the Crusades in middle
ages. There was an organization of security and guidance, transport, accommodation in travels even if it was a
primitive form (İstanbul Chamber of Guides, n.d.). But the first tourism movement began with Grand Tour that
contains in elements of relaxation, learning and recreation which made the traveling, a tourism activity. The first
organized tour was held by Thomas Cook, this tour can be considered as the beginning of today’s travel agents.
Thomas Cook managed this type of tour, thus he pioneered the contemporary guidance (Batman, Yıldırgan and
Demirtaş, 2000: 1).
Tourist guides are one of the most important actors of the tourism sector. They are responsible for the overall
impression and satisfaction and capable of converting tourists’ travel to an experience (Ap and Wong, 2001: 551). A
cultural gap usually occurs between the tourists and host destination intercultural formations. Tourists participate in a
guided tour for many reasons or benefit from the service of guidance. Guiding service appeal the tourists because of
they want to experience a new culture or avoid of the challenges of being in a foreign country (Yu, Weiler and Ham,
2002: 77). Tourist guide should constantly improve own professional knowledge, skills, experiences in
performing their duties (Değirmencioğlu and Ahipaşaoğlu, 2008: 2). A skillful guide can convert tourists into
volunteer tourism ambassador for their own country and society (Korkmaz Temizkan and Temizkan, 2010: 5).
Turkish Language Instution describes quality and characteristic as fallow;
1516
Quality “a. 1. To describe as belonging to or distinguishing a thing,
an essential or distinctive characteristic, property or attribute”.
Characteristic “a.1. An ordinary or obvious quality that makes one person or thing different from others,
specialty” (Turkish Language Instution, 2016).
Longman Dictionary describes quality and characteristic as fallow;
Characteristic “a quality or feature of something or someone that is typical of them and easy to recognize”.
Quality “something that people may have as part of their character, for example courage or intelligence”.
An example sentence “She has strong leadership qualities”.
Oxford Dictionary defines quality as fallow; “A distinctive attribute or characteristic possessed by
someone or something”. An example sentence: “It's a triangular route, taking in the raised ground at the
join of two valleys, and each side has distinctive qualities”.
Quality: “It refers generally something changeable, point outs the non-generally accepted. They are units of
meaning to choose and prefer the appropriate for use, needs, sensations and perception from within the
paradigms that forms concept”.
Characteristic: “It usually specifies the mainstream direction which unchanging. They are generally units of
meaning to shows persistence, and essence of the pointed out that the concept which is any name suitable to be
described” (Yılmaz, 2008: 44).
Quality and characteristic was examined in term of distinction of by the example of apple. Characteristic of an
apple is (non variable, unchanging aspects apples from apple)” its shell bright, hard, the pleasant smell, crunchy
texture, small pip fruit”. Quality of an apple is (variable, aspects which can vary from apple to apple) “various colors
from red to green, sour or sweet taste” (Yılmaz, 2008: 43).
Proceeding from the above definitions and examples, qualities are part of a person's character, distinctive
attributes, characteristic refers to the unique features of the person. The concepts (language, communication skills)
which tourist guide should have while the profession, have been researched within the framework of “the qualities of
tourist guide”.
By Yu, Weiler and Ham, (2002) an article was written in order to examining the intercultural competence of
Chinese tourist guide, the qualities and characteristics tourist guide should have as follows:

2. Methodology
This study was conducted by using content analysis which is one of the qualitative data analysis techniques.
Content analysis is a method used for comparison, characterization documents, interview transcripts or records,
divided into a smaller number of top themes associated with each other (Altunışık, Coşkun, Bayraktaroğlu and
Yıldırım, 2007: 268-270). Essentially, it is a technique for examining the categories that the data comprise and
condensing them into fewer categories so that they are easier to interpret. In other words, content analysis looks for the
presence of words in a text and endeavors to understand their meanings and relationships to each other. Content
analysis as a way of discovering patterns in data that aid our understanding of the underlying phenomena (Matthews
and Ross, 2014: 395).
The aim of the content analysis is to achieve concepts and relationships that can explain the collected data
in a meaningful way. Previously unnoticed themes and concepts can be explored with this analysis. Content analysis is
a rearranging process of combining similar data within the framework of specific concepts and themes (Şimşek and
Yıldırım, 2013: 259).
3.Analyses and Results
According to recent researches (Zhang & Chow, 2004, Chang, 2014 ) on tourist guide visitors believe that a
skillful guide have extensive knowledge of destinations and attractions. Zhang and Chow (2004) proposed 20 service
quality attributes to rate tourist guide performance in Hong Kong. The six most important service quality attributes
were punctuality, the ability to solve problems, having knowledge of the destination, being honest and trustworthy, and
being informed of safety regulations.
The qualities of tour guide listed under various top titles in tables compiled from dissertations, books,
relevant studies of national-international organizations and reports. A group list of all the relevant qualification
attributes related to tourist guides was identified based on a literature review. Previous studies have revealed a range of
terms to describe guide’s qualifications (role). These include guide’s skills, attitudes, knowledge.
Table 4 presents a conceptual approach about qualifications of tourist guide. When the studies are examined
in the literature, It can be assert that the roles of guides are similar. But these roles are listed under many topics. When
the themes are examined in the tables it can be said that the framework qualities of tourist guide are shaped under the
top title of Cognitive factors, Affective factors and Behavioral factors. Those factors are the framework which tourist
guide should have. For example; affective factors include in the expression on attitudes and feelings of guide

4.Conclusion
Tourist guide establishes relationship between the host destination and tourists. They accompany tourist
during their trip and provide interpretation about the sites. They can also influence the tourist’s experience and
satisfaction in basic aspects. In order to fulfill the duties adequately it is expected that the guide needed to have
knowledge and attitudes of the profession. The purpose of the study is primarily to form a general framework of the
qualities that tourist guide should have.
The aim of this study is to attempt in order to ascertain the aim, dissertations, and reports of national and
international were examined. As a result of study it was detected that the qualities and characteristic of tour guide
should have are mixed. “Characteristic” word is indicated as an unchanging concept of person-to-person while
expressing the feature tour guides should have (for example: to have a bachelor’s degree). Despite “quality" concept
may change from person to person it was emphasized that anyone who is a tourist guide should has those qualities.
It was observed that there are lots of different classifications about the qualities that guide should have. It
can be expressed that the versatility of this attribution makes it difficult for the expression of these qualities. Hence, it
can be said that this can cause a complexity in determining attributes of guide. Thus, it was categorized under the
cognitive, affective and behavioral factors by using the literature. It is believed that this study may help to solve the
complexity of attribution. It may be advisable to test the validity of the classification by interviews with the guides.
