The name of former generalSami Anan is back again tothe front after being absentfor nearly year. Suddenlywe are having a ood of hisphotos in the civilian suite insome strange Facebook pagecalled The popular campaign
to demand General SamiAnan to run for the presiden-cy which appeared suddenlyfrom no where last October19, 2013.Now the Page admins claimthat some of them are ex-mil-itary while other some arefrom none other late OmarSuleimans presidential cam-paign and allegedly AhmedShaqs campaign. The AhmedShaqs ofcial campaigndenied that it was supportingthe former general in the up-coming presidential race.Anyhow It seems that thecampaign has got telephonenumber at least their of-ce in Qena according to
the stencils on the buildingsthere. They consider thestencils as graftiThat so-called popular cam-paign to convince the generalto run for president page isfull of personal photos takenfor Anan in a civilian suit.In his salon I thinkReading Al Ahram newspaperin his gardenSmiling to the cameraThis is a personal photo-shootsession without doubt. When I saw these photos , allwhat I thought about was howbig a chief of staffs salarywas to have this luxuriousvilla or even Palace in NewCairo !? yeah I am bit nave,
but you know one of themisconceptions that the armyofcers are extremely richliving in compounds , well theaverage army ofcer or evenaverage major general doesnot live in such palace or villadespite what is being saidabout the armys economicempire.Of course I can not neglectthe fact that General Ananhas dyed his hair to appearyoung or how that page isclaiming that General Anan isthe best presidential candi-date to represent revolution-ary youth !!! Oh yes to theend of that strange talk thatmakes you wonder if this is a
parody page or what !!?Needless to say the Socialmedia users could not missthis opportunity and madefun of this photos turningthem in to memes in less than72 hours !!Here is a collection of the
photos published by Contem-porary Art Page. Now we got a special Tum-blr blog Electoral Alshand Facebook Pages with allGeneral Anans memes likeSami Anans campaign toteach Photoshop and SamiAnans presidential campaignto teach PhotoshopOf course some have startedto ask how the case would beif it were Abdel Fatah El Sisiinstead of Anan.Well Meme makers in Egyptdid not leave Egypts militarysavior alone in the past weeksespecially with his famousquotes like You are the lightof my eyes .. etc. Still it did
not meet the same successafter all Anan is from the fewpeople all Egyptians whetherrevolutionaries , Pro-Islamistsand Pro-Military agreed tohate and mock so far.Yes it seems that Anan uniteda lot of people to hate him.The revolutionaries can notforget what happened duringSCAF rule and how manypeople were killed during hisrule. The Pro-Military/Pro-Mubarak/Pro-Sisi Anti-Revo-lutionaries hate him becausethey believe that he sold thecountry to the Muslim broth-erhood and the Americans notto mention that he turned
against Mubarak. Ironically hewas not alone in this, AbdelFatah El Sisi. The Muslim brotherhood andtheir supporters hate him be-cause he is a military man.The Pro-Military media beganto attack the General mad-ly too as well. It is not a bigsecret that it seems there iswrong between the currentcommandership of the armyand Anan , at least this is thereaction you got not from thePro-Military media only butalso the Pro-Military Facebookpages and accounts of armyofcers and supported unof-cially by the army. When a military Facebook
page like Egypt Military Pic-tures mocks the former chiefof staff explicitly then thismeans something.I do not understand for real
that Sami Anan affair es-pecially that hate relationbetween the army and its
former chief of staff now. Itstarted last September whensuddenly we found Al Watannewspaper which is too closeto all sort of security appa-ratuses in the country pub-lishing what they claimed tobe Anans memories aboutthe 25 January revolution. After releasing those mem-ories in Al Watan , we foundthe ofcial spokesperson ofarmed forces Col. Ali wentballistic issuing a state-ment warning of publishingalleged memories of ex-mili-tary men in that critical timewithout the armys permissionwas a dangerous thing to theend of that talk. We knew
that he was speaking aboutnone other than Anan.Amazingly nobody has spokendirectly to Anan from the me-dia whether about his allegedmemories or about that Presi-dential campaign.Anyhow there is somethingI do not understand fromthe memories in Pro-MilitaryWatan to that pathetic Face-book page to the silence ofthe man already. Will Anan be the scapegoat ofthe military ?? Will He play anew role in the future ? Willhe be the next Omar Sulei-man in the presidential elec-tions ??Are we going to have a face
off between Anan and Sisi inthe Presidential elections ??A trivial fact ousted PresidentMorsi issued a presidentialdecree last August givingimmunity to both Anan andTantawy against accountabil-ity. The decree has not beencancelled yet.In the end, here is a certif-icate from Su order pub-lished online about Sami Ananclaiming that he is the greatgrandson of none other thanOmar !! Oh yes Omar Ibn ElKhatab !!Man if Omar saw Anan and hiscronies !!The certicate !!

What Is
Arabic
Science Fiction,
And Who Gets to
Write It?
Alice Kloker wrote this article on Arablit blog at26 Oct, talking about the since ction in the Arabhistory.
For reading the full article:http://arablit.wordpress.
com/2013/10/26/what-is-arabic-sci-ence-ction-and-who-gets-to-write-it/
Ten years ago, I wouldnt have consideredmyself a fan of the genre. Sure, I grew upin the 1980s and enjoyed watching Star TrekVoyager, the (original) Star Wars lms andeven got in a few episodes of Dr. Who. Butfor the most part, I confess, I couldnt reallyget into it. It seemed like a bit of a boys club, with lots of gadgets, laser guns, and femalecharacters that served a primarily ornamen-tal function. It wasnt clear to me why twothousand years into the future, women werestill wearing loads of make-up and runningaround spaceships in stiletto heels and mini-skirts. Also, the whole notion of these giantspaceships being on a voyage of benevolentdiscovery reminded me a little too much ofthe so-called civilizing mission of the im-perial project. My attitude towards science ction changed
completely after a friend turned me on toOctavia Butler. I started with Parable of theSower, Liliths Brood and then of course herclassic Kindred, about US American slaveryand time travel. I then began to re-thinkwhat science ction was really all about, anda whole new set of questions emerged. Whatrole might science ction play in the strugglefor human liberation? How might science c-tion help us deconstruct what the 21st centuryreader assumes to be natural ways of orga-nizing human societies? What could sciencection teach us about imagining new ways ofcoexisting with each other? Butler continuesto inspire new thinking around these ques-tions, even after her untimely death.I recently moved to the United Kingdom, andwas immediately drawn to Arab Lits post ofan upcoming salon: From Sindbad to Sci-Fi:Reimagining Arab Science Fiction. Whatcould be more interesting to discuss rightnow than the diversity of literary traditionsengaged in science ction, and the big ques-tions that are possible to ask within thegenre? What other voices, like Octavia But-ler, were out there in the literary universethat would expand my understanding of whatscience ction might be all about, and whatmight they tell us about time, space and oth-er worlds?Lucky enough to get a ticket to this sold-out event, I can report that it lived up to itspromise in the Nour Festival of Arts brochureto deliver a panel of luminary speakers dis-cussing why a revival of Arab Science Fictionis more important than ever.Ziauddin Sardar, a public intellectual, Profes-sor at Middlesex University and widely pub-lished author, most recently of Future: Allthat Matters, started the panelists remarksby reminding the audience that science c-
tion is not just about space in the sense ofa galaxy far, far away but how we think andfeel about the other. Science ction, heremarked, can be thought of as a mirror ofsociety, in that it reects the anxiety and thepredicaments of contemporary times. Henoted the examples of suicide bombing andtorture treated in the 21st century version ofBattlestar Galactica to illustrate this point.Sardar said that science ction, taking placein the domain of future time, can serve asan instrument to examine and perhaps evensolve societys problems, and that as a genrescience ction encourages societal self-re-ection. He placed contemporary Arabicscience ction works such as Naguib Mah-fouzs Journey of Ibn Fattouma and G. Wil-low Wilsons Alif the Unseen within a tradi-tion that dates back to the House of Wisdomand the golden age of science in what is nowIraq during the 8th through the 13th centu-
ries, and declared that there was no reasonto place Zakariya al-Qazwinis Awaj bin An-faq outside of this tradition, as it fullls all
the proper criteria for what we understandtoday to be a work of science ction.Samira Ahmed, a prominent British journal-ist, opened with a brilliant analysis of themovie Argo as a 1970s zombie apocalypselm, where radical Islam is an alien virusthat overnight has transformed a city into athoughtless mob. I have since visited her de-lightful website, where you can read moreof her thoughts on this matter in How theMiddle East Became Another Planet.Returning to the example of Battlestar Ga-lactica, Ahmed cited an episode from theoriginal series where, in search of an ele-ment (tylium rock) needed to fuel its shipsnuclear engines, members of the eet visit aplanet that on the surface appears to have aneconomy based on pleasure. Of course, thispleasure palace hides a much darker secret
beneath. (For those interested in BattlestarGalactica, I suspect she was referring to the1978 episode, Saga of a Star World.) Ahmedsuggests we might see a metaphor here forBahrain. After all, doesnt much of sciencection require a lot of fossil fuels, or itsequivalent, to make these long journeys intospace?I was utterly charmed by the third panelist,Lebanese-Canadian science ction authorAmal El-Mohtar. Her infectious enthusiasmfor the subject was evident as she recountedreading Dr. Who novels as a child, and oth-er science ction in English and French, butnever Arabic. El-Mohtar smartly criticizedmainstream science ction for its unimagina-tive gender roles and use of people of coloronly in alien roles. She asked the audience toimagine what kind of privilege was necessaryto take ones own culture and experience andposit it as universal, as is so often the casewith mainstream science ction texts.El-Mohtar encouraged an expansive view ofArabic science ction, which is inclusive offantasy and mythology, and not one limit-ed to space exploration. For example, Ara-bic science ction might imagine a world inwhich colonialism had not occurred. She provided some helpful sources for nd-ing Arabic Science Fiction titles, includ-ing http://www.islamsci.com/, the WorldSF Blog (which apparently is no longer main-tained, although it does include an entry onArabic Science Fiction: http://worldsf.word-press.com/tag/arab-science-ction/) andSoa Samatars blog: www.soasamatar.com. El-Mohtar also recommended Hassan Bla-sims The Iraqi Christ. The nal panelist, Kyhle Alexander Raja, pre-sented what he termed as a Muslim ratherthan a regional perspective on moderator
Quentin Coopers original question concern-ing the effect a revival of Arab science c-tion might have. Raja, an artist and archi-tect, pointed out that the larger questionsposted by science ction such as Are wealone in the universe? and What lies be-yond space? are also spiritual questionsthat were explored a thousand years ago byscholars in the Middle East.I left the salon determined to incorporatemany of the titles mentioned into my win-ter reading list, and with a greater apprecia-tion of just how large and diverse the tent ofscience ction really is. At its best, sciencection is not an avenue for escape from re-ality it is one of the tools at our dispos-al to transform the planet right here wherewe live. And by reading authors who reectthe full diversity of our known universe andits rich histories and traditions rather thana small minority with universalist pretenses,
readers are equipped with a better set oftools to build a world that serves us all.
