In today’s Sedrah, there is a Mitzvah that could revolutionize our lives. Our Torah says, "Do not oppress your friend". Chazel say this means you can not say anything to hurt someone or to cause anguish to anyone. Imagine, what kind of life we would have if we hurt no one and no one hurt us.
Dvar Torah Behar/Bechukosai Rabbi Ari Galandauer
It is hard to believe that this Shabbos we are completing Sefer Vayikra, and that we have gone through the entire Sefer at home in quarantine! May the three words of Chazak Chazak V’nischazek, which we say as we complete Sefer Vayikra, truly give us the strength to endure and overcome this pandemic. Parshas Bechukosai includes the tochacha/curses that will befall the Jewish people if we stray too far from Hashem. One of the curses found in 26:32 says “And I will make the land desolate, and your enemies that will try to inhabit it will be astonished (at how desolate the land is and therefore uninhabitable)” Rashi says that this a good thing for the Jews as our enemies will not be able to settle our land. The Ramban sees this as a blessing among the curses, as it is an assurance to the Jewish people that not only will we one day return to Israel, but until then, no other nation will prosper in it. Just imagine if over the last 2000 years the non Jewish occupiers of the land would have been successful in settling and building up the land into the metropolis that it is today, would the UN have voted to give it back to us? As it is we just barely won the vote! Hashem in his infinite wisdom, made sure long ago that Israel without a Jewish presence will remain desolate, ensuring that it will be there waiting for us upon our return. A most important takeaway from this is that even in the midst of the curses, Hashem is there, guiding and planning our future redemption. The following cute modern day story highlights Hashem’s hashgacha in our lives. Mr. Friedman was waiting in line at the airport to board his flight. A rude individual rushed past and cut ahead of him in line.Deciding to remain calm, Mr. Friedman did not make a fuss. When the guy got to the counter, the airline employee said to him “Sir, you got the last seat on the flight.” Mr. Friedman was very upset, “that was supposed to be my ticket!” he thought to himself. As he got to the counter the airline employee said to him, “Sir, because we are out of economy class seats, we are going to put you in first class instead. Enjoy your flight”. Mr. Friedman tried hard not to gloat as he walked past the line cutter when the stewardess announced the boarding call for first class passengers. As we continue to dwell in isolation from one another, experiencing our own type of Tochacha, we must take comfort in knowing that Hashem is here with us, watching, guiding, and is planning our imminent redemption. Chazak chazak, Venischazek!
