The event was organised by the MOP Foundation at the KNACK Art Group space, as part of the MOP CAP 2015 winner Nader Koochaki’s on-going project research. The discussion was co-moderated by the MOP CAP 2015 curator Mika Savela and Fereshte Moosavi.

Asphalt, or bitumen, is the viscous, black and sticky substance familiar to man since antiquity and a residual product of petrochemical processes. Mixed together with gravel, asphalt forms the ever-expanding surface for the modern world and its movements. From school yards to expressways, from smog-ridden cities to road trip getaways, from the glistening rainy sidewalks to speeding youngsters in the night, asphalt has become the omnipresent, dark matter that surrounds most necessities of our daily urban existence. While we project such visual, emotional and cultural narratives on the bitumen-paved roads and streets, we almost never discuss asphalt as a unifying substance, a common nominator for these observations.

Talking Asphalt works as set of miniature interviews into the various aspects into the theme of asphalt in the urban culture of Tehran. With no preset agenda, we aim to learn from individuals engaged with the material itself, the forms of motorised movement, the road users and professionals, the observers of cultures it enables and the networks and urban spaces it is used to build. From traffic jams to hitting the Road 59, we remain curious as to where talk about asphalt may lead.

Matter

While asphalt forms a significant material mass in cities, it mostly comes across as the utilitarian and banal urban surface. Jalal Mousavi is a specialist working in the petroleum technology industry, among other things, with asphalt. But what is asphalt exactly? Here, in addition to its technological meaning, we also think of asphalt as an abstraction, a dark matter. What is the history and science behind it, or where will the use of asphalt go in the future?

Road

With a selection of clips, film researcher Ali Gholipour will talk of the cultural and cinematic imprints of the Jade Chaloos, the Karaj dam and driving up to the North. We ask, can driving be considered a filmic experience? What significance have films had in the formation of the “North” – a wide-spread cultural reference for Tehranians?

Drive

Hirad Amiri is an all-around expert in cars, their inner and external workings and their maneuvering – with extensive technical, economic and cultural knowledge related to vehicles. How does Tehran and its car culture appear in his line of work? Is there more to cars than meets the eye? In a city that is overrun by cars, what is the lure of driving: What is there to love? Can driving be a performance, a game or play?

آسفالت یا قیر، ماده ای چسبناک و سیاه است، که انسان از عهد باستان با آن آشناست. ماده ایست باقی مانده از فرآیندهای پتروشیمایی)شیمی نفت( که پس از ترکیب با سنگریزه و ماسه ، این آسفالت است که سطوح همیشه در حال گسترش دنیای مدرن و جابه جایی هایش را تشیکل می دهد. از حیاط مدرسه ها تا بزرگراها، از شهرهای دود گرفته تا سفرهای جاده ای، از پیاده روهای برق خیسی خورده، تا ویراژهای

شبانه جوانکها، آسفالت به ماده تاریک و همه جا حاضری تبدیل شده است که بیشترین نیازهای موجودیت شهری ما را در بر می گیرد. در حالیکه خیابانهای و پیاده روهای فرش شده از قیر در بطن تمامی روایات

بصری، احساسی و فرهنگی ما حضور دارند، تقریبا بحث آسفالت هرگز به عنوان یکی کننده و فصل مشترک تمامی این تجربیات و مشاهدات مطرح نیست.

گفتگوی آسفالت ، به صورت مجموعه ای از مذاکرات کوتاه از نقطه نظرهای متفاوت پیرامون موضوع آسفالت در فرهنگ شهری تهران خواهد بود.بدون دستورالعمل قبلی، هدف این است که از دانش افرادی که در گیر خود این ماده هستند، از فرم های حرکتهای موتوری، از کاربر های جاده ها و رانندگان حرفه

ای، از مشاهده گرهای فرهنگ ساخته شده از اینها و از شبکه های ارتباطی و فضاهای شهری بنا شده، بهره بگیریم. از راهبندانها تا زدن به جاده ۵۹.، کنجکاو یم تا ببینیم گفتگو به کجا خواهد رسید.

مادهدر حالیکه ماده آسفالت قسمت عمده شهرها را شکل میدهد، غالبا به عنوان ماده ای سودمند و پوشش

دهنده سطوح معمولی شهرها به حساب می آید. جالل موسوی عالوه بر نفت و گاز در زمینه ی آسفالت هم دانش و تجربه دارد و اطالعاتی به ما میدهد. ولی به واقع آسفالت چیست؟ اینجا عالوه بر تکیه بر

تعریف صنعتی آسفالت، همچنین به آن به عنوان ماده تاریک، مفهومی کلی و انتزاعی، فکر می کنیم. عقبه ی تاریخی و علمی آن چیست؟ یا در آینده استفاده از آسفالت تا کجا خواهد رسید؟

This report is a way of getting back to you on the latest in this on-going project. We start with news from Tehran.

Talking Asphalt – Interviews about the Road, the Drive and the Dark Matter was en-visioned as series short talks and interviews with speakers representing a variety of professional and personal viewpoints, unified in some ways by asphalt. Thus, talking about asphalt instead of the background of the artistic work-in-progress, became a part of the research – and the work itself, extending into the life of urban Tehran. In this report, you'll find a short review of the event and some further thoughts.

[Matter]

Jalal Mousavi, a doctorate in geoengineering and specialist in oil and gas, explained from his industry perspective what asphalt actually is; a mixture of sand, gravel and bitumen – the heaviest and crudest element of petroleum refining processes. He told us about the main reserves, places where bitumen is extracted, the specific tech-niques used to extract it, the main producers, technical advances, storage methods and applications.

[Road]

Ali Gholipour, a scholar well versed in theatre and culture, pointed out to us the im-portance that Chaloos Road theme has in the modern history of Iran. He presented us the road as a body with three attached elements: the Kandovan tunnel, the Karaj Dam and the iconic actress and singer Googoosh. All three have played a part in the cre-ation of road as a place and a resource for leisure, especially for the well-off middle class. As a result, the Chaloos Road became, not really the route built for arriving somewhere but a symbol of the trip itself – a destination happening on the way.

[Drive]

180, 360, Donut, Nim Kelaj, Dande Mostaghim, Drug, Sniff, Burn Out, Rockford, Drift, Ye Lab Do Lab, Drift Back… naming and describing a series of movements, Hirad Amiri marked on the performative facet of the cars and the roads, explaining that the city can be understood as a theatre or a playground and the car as a leisure technology and a malleable tool.

In the time after the event – we have discussed the ways the talks were received and seen by the public. While talking of asphalt, we understand that the audience has now become a part of a performance – a part of an exchange. While talking of asphalt in Tehran, we started a conversation that will have several outcomes as the project carries on, and with the Asphalt Report, we hope to, perhaps irregularly or unexpectedly, continue this exchange.

]ماده[

جالل موسوی که تحصیالتش در زمینه ی مکانیک سنگ است و تخصص و تجربه ی ویژه ای در زمینه ی نفت و گاز دارد، در باره ی اینکه آسفالت از زاویه ی صنعتی چیست توضیح داد.

آسفالت ترکیبی است از شن، سنگریزه و قیر به عنوان سنگین ترین و خام ترین باقیمانده نفتی در فرایند پاالیش نفت. او درباره ی معادن و مکان های اصلی و روشهای استخراج قیر مطالبی گفت و همچنین پیرامون تولید کننده های اصلی، روش های نگهداری، فن آوری های نوین و مصارف مختلف قیر و

آسفالت توضیحاتی ارایه داد.

]جاده[

علی قلی پور به عنوان محقق و پژوهشگر که نگاهی عمیق به سینما و تیاتر و فرهنگ دارد، به اهمیت موضوع جاده چالوس در تاریخ مدرن ایران اشاره کرد. او این جاده را به عنوان بدنه ای که ملحقاتی

همچون تونل کندوان، سد کرج و خانم گوگوش به آن پیوسته است توصیف کرد. هر سه اینها نقش مهمی در شکل گیری جاده چالوس به عنوان عاملی برای تفریح طبقه ی متوسط رو به باال دارند. بنابراین جاده

چالوس را نه به عنوان راهی برای رسیدن به یک مکان، بلکه به عنوان نمادی از سفر و مقصدی که در تمام مسیر جاده اتفاق میفتد، می توان دانست.

]راندن[

۳۶۰, ۱۸۰، دونات، نیم کالژ، دنده مستقیم، دراگ، اسنیف، برن اوت، راک فورد، دریفت، یه لب دو لب، دریفت بک فنون راندن اتوموبیل را، یک به یک نام می برد و با حرکات تن و دست هایش این همه را

به نمایش می گذاشت. هیراد امیری به جنبه های نمایشی ماشین روی سطح خیابان و جاده اشاره می کرد به گونه ای که شهر به عنوان صحنه تیاتر یا زمین بازی و اتوموبیل به مثابه وسیله ای منعطف و خمیری و

نوعی فن آوری برای فرایند لذت. لذتی که در چشمهایش موج می زد.

در پایان برنامه روشهای دریافت و نگاه مخاطبین به موضوعات و صحبت ها مورد بحث و گفتگو قرار گرفت. در حین گفتگوی آسفالت، متوجه شدیم که مخاطبین حاال دیگر خود بخشی از این برنامه و تبادل

شده اند. همزمان با صحبت از آسفالت در تهران مکالمه ای با نتایج عدیده بوجود آمد که از این پس پروژه برپایه ی آن ها ادامه خواهد یافت. امیدواریم با گزارش آسفالت این تبادل ادامه پیدا کند.
