THE PROBLEM

WHY HAVE WE BEEN OVERLOOKING THE OBVIOUS?

Inspite of the fact that there is an Industry prevalent since time immemorial it still lacks basic order. The repercussions of which are not only monetary loss but also loss of habitat, resources and planet that has been very kind to us. Still what is interesting is, that an entirely unorganised sector has been running the show for ages. Imagine what a simple positive step could mean in this change. Truth be told, this is one industry that pays you for doing the right thing.

But we lack behind for most obvious reasons.

Hardly any thought or effort has been put into making this sector more organised even when a little effort can lead to yielding various monetary and other social benefits. Only 5% of 4.4 lac tonnes of e-waste in India is recycled, only 26% of paper, 36% of plactics and similarly a major part is left out in fields of metal and glass as well. This leaves a vast void that needs to be filled by means of effective management in the recycling sector through technological advancements.

74% of the total post consumer paper in India which could have been recycled is wasted and not re-collected. We really can’t blame anyone for the lack of awareness in the general public about recycling since this is a topic to which almost no importance or education has been provided. Simlarly glass and plastics pose a heavy threat on the ecology. Unlike other developed countries, the sorting mechanism in Indian households and industry is not managed properly at source.

The kind of load that we are putting on this planet is unbelievable, instead of recycling we prefer to use to raw materials most times. It takes 12 trees to make 1 tonne of 100% non-recycled newsprint. 1 recycled tin would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared to making it from raw materials.

NOTE : By 2000, 2.9 billion people were living in cities; and by 2025 garbage production will reach 6 million tonnes a day, a quantity that will be “enough to fill a line of rubbish trucks 5,000 kilometres long every day.” By this rate, we will soon be heading towards a new era of darkness.

A U.S. survey claims that 9 out of 10 people would recycle if it were made easier and more convenient for them. A design competition held in the US was won by Gary Anderson, a young graphic designer from the University of Southern California. His entry, based on the Mobius strip (a shape with only one side and no end) is now universally recognized as the symbol for RECYCLING. This means that the younger generation is giving a thought to these social problems. The new generation is concerned about their future and the future of the generations to come.

All this applies to India as well, we have one of the fatest growing economies in the world, that means we are one of the biggest markets for Scrap and Recyclable products. With a whooping USD 38.6 billion industry, run by an un-organised sector without any technology, management or any kind of innovation, it creates a money churning opportunity like no other.

NOTE : A recent report released by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India pegged the market for recycled products in India at Rs 80,000 crore (USD 12.8 Billion), up from Rs 69,000 crore (USD 11 Billion) in 2012. The report further estimated that the market would cross Rs 1,15,000 crore ($18.4 Billion) by 2015. The market has recorded a growth of 15 percent per annum.

A report points out that goods worth Rs 56,200 crore are simply lying locked at people's homes in the form of items which are no longer being used, across urban India. The potential of used household items being stocked can be unleashed if these goods are sold, thereby, creating a sustainable market for second hand goods. But now there is a shift in the mind-set where consumer rather replace an old product than repair one.

India generates about 60 million tonnes of trash every year. 10 million tonnes of trash is generated in just metropolitan cities: Including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

From here on, what remains is clockwork. Our transport vehicle, each for a different category now fills up the specified material and proceeds to the specified cetres.The centres are spread over a vast area including many states where we have tie-ups with some recycling plants.
