Congratulations to everyone on post - 4th of July Holiday celebrations! There’s so much to look for-ward to over the remainder of the summer. Speak-ing of so much to look forward to, thank you and congratulations to each and every one of you who have contributed to, encouraged, and sponsored East Side Living for the past three years. This month marks the 3rd Anniversary of your resi-dent newsletter publication. We are excited about what’s happening with your publication!

You’ll notice our neighborhood Home of the Month and Living Spaces feature, this month featuring one of our neighborhood beauties. You’ll notice gorgeous photos of this marvelous renovation…one many of you may not ever have driven by! Take a tour through this home in our Living Spaces feature, and see the fabulous interior design and decorations for yourself. Savvy Real Estate moni-tors will also notice the re-designed format of the Real Estate Sold Page. Thanks to Jessica Giorgi of ReMax – The Blanchet Group for making this infor-mation available each month!

Also, “Meet your Neighbor” featured in our Physi-cian’s Profile section this month. Our cover story features Dr. Michelle Lefebvre, MD, partner of Partners in Pediatrics. Read about her area of expertise, her husband (a successful Orthopedic Surgeon), and children (who attend Moses Brown School, right here in the neighborhood!). See why her advice for community members is to value pre-ventative care and to make it a priority.

We welcome our new Photographers to our Contributor team. Resident photographer David Katz, of DAK Photography; and Anthony Ledoux, of Red Eye Photography. Dave has some inter-esting “items of interest” in the neighborhood, which you will see featured in our upcoming “Where in the neighborhood is this?” section... Anthony brings a background in photography from RISD, and specializes in Weddings, Family Portraits, and Events. Once again, we are also excited to welcome Wendy Schiller, Po-litical Analyst, to our resident Contributor team.

Look for our neighborhood “dog whisperer” Nina Karlin, back from camp, who shares her insights on never giving up in our Kids2Kids section. She also shares her article enclosed about Doggie Benefits in our Precious Pets section. Adults, kids, and families continue to follow the Red Sox race toward the Ameri-can League title: summer schedule enclosed.

We welcome New Sponsors: New York Life Agent, Mary Brennan, Hillside Country Club, Iovino Appraisal Ser-vices, Public Insurance Adjustors, Flagstar Bank, Red Eye Photography, and Cypress Designs. Each are extremely excited about sponsoring your neighborhood publication!

Finally, come join us in celebrating our 3rd Anniversary Cel-ebration Party at Laurelmead Retirement Community. Mark the Save-the-Date on your calendar! Check out our Save-the-Date section for more details. Thanks so much to Laurelmead, and all of our Sponsors who continue to make East Side Living happen! As always, we continue to “turn neighborhoods into communities!”

Continue making August a great time of family fun! Remember to forward those stories, articles, and photos to [email protected].

See you in the neighborhood!

Dr. Michelle Lefebvre (left) of Partners in Pediatrics

Michelle Lefebvre, MDPartners in Pediatrics95 Pitman Street, Suite 2200Providence, RI 02906401-437-6777Partnersri.com

I cofounded Partners in Pediatrics in 2015 with Dr. Colette Vieau. We strive to provide personalized care in a smaller setting, where families enjoy ongoing re-lationships with us and our staff. My passion for the healthcare of children and adolescents on an individu-al basis is what I strive to share, and I am able to serve a diverse community here in Rhode Island.

I grew up in the small town of Hardwick, VT, and had an interest in science at a young age. I attended Wheaton College in Norton, MA, followed by medical school at Brown University. My pediatric residency was here at Brown University, based at Hasbro Children’s Hospital as well as Women and Infants Hospital, and I served one additional year as Chief Resident. Subsequently I have worked for 17 years in private practice here in Providence.

My family and I immensely enjoy living on the East Side. My husband, Dr. Keith Monchik, grew up here and is an orthopedic surgeon and partner at Ortho RI Foundry Orthopedics. My children, Nathan, 10, and Emmy, 7, thrive at Moses Brown

School, and we all enjoy family, friends, and the community surrounding us.

My advice for members of our community is to val-ue preventive care and make it a priority. Regular (as well as sick visits) health care at one primary setting is optimal for your child’s health. Vac-cinations, good nutrition, safety precautions, and routine preventive visits are the silent and unsung heroes that ensure a healthier adult society.

into a masterpiece!Photos provided by homeowner, Robert H. MonteCalvo

205 Grotto is a “Converted Carriage House,” once part of an Extensive Black-stone Boulevard Estate. 205 Grotto Avenue is located on one of the most presti-gious, quietest corners of upper Grotto and Lincoln Avenues. 205 Grotto Avenue is surrounded by multi-million-dollar properties and a “Natural Preserve.” It is a “Jewel Box” of quality. The exterior consists of four security cameras, home alarm security system, lawn sprinklers, exterior garden lighting, and mature Blue Pine shrubbery which allows for considerable privacy. Lawn maintenance and snow removal are included. The first floor consists of surround sound, new “oversized” 6 pane over 12 pane insulated glass, stunning Cherry kitchen with many pull-out storage compartments, and a liquor cabinet. There are double French doors leading from the kitchen to a 15’ x 24’ private deck. Also, there are double French doors leading from the living room to the same 15’x 24’ private deck, which overlooks a private garden. There is a large gas fireplace with a stun-ning golden oak architectural mantel. An exquisite layette with hand-hewned vanity completes this level. The second level consists of a Mezzanine with double French doors overlooking Grotto Avenue, new insulated 6 pane over 12 pane windows, two bedrooms, study, two baths, built-in drawers, and built-in closets with rounded/radius corners throughout. Two of the bedrooms on this level have double French doors leading to “Juliet balconies.” There are six arched 6 pane over 12 pane Gable windows on this level, which allow for glorious illumination throughout. There is a second kitchen at the garden level, a bedroom, an extra- large shower/bath, laundry and office of which are beautifully finished and could be used for functions, in-law(s) or guest(s). A set of French doors at this level lead to rear gardens, carport and additional parking.

Dr. Patrick Sullivan, MD, FACS

“Top 1% of America's Plastic Surgeons”Castle Connolly 2001-2015

Voted a "Top Plastic Surgeon" by his peersand by nurses in surveys done by RhodeIsland Monthly (2001 - 2016)

Dr. Pat Sullivan understands that, when it comes to liing and sculpting the face and neck, artistic vision is key. His new and minimally invasive treatment, including the Silhouee Instali, uses advanced technology to help redene facial contours, giving patients immediate, natural-looking results with minimal downtime.

Silhouee InstaLiTM is the breakthrough facial rejuvenation technology. is can li sagging facial skin without the need for major surgery, scars or general anesthesia. ough the procedure is not for everyone we have been very happy with the results in select patients.

• The procedure is usually done in-office, and it involves the placement of sutures with bidirectional cones to reposition and elevate the skin. • The sutures, which stimulate collagen production that aids in the renewal of your skin, are absorbed by your body naturally over time. • The treatment is comfortable, requires only local anesthesia and typically takes about 45 minutes.• You will see results right away and recovery time is minimal.• The Silhouttee Instalift in combination with our other treatments has given us the opportunity to effectively treat specific areas including facial laxity, jowls, fatty collections and areas of deflation.

Dr. Pat Sullivan, MD, FACS is on the faculty at Brown University's Alpert school of Medicineand the Division Chief of Cosmetic Surgery.

As Laurie Notaro said, “If you really be-lieve in what you’re doing, work hard, take nothing personally and if something blocks one route, find another. Never give up.”

Over the years I’ve learned how not giving up pays off in the end. It can be as simple as failing a test and studying more for the next one, or as simple as missing buzzer-beater shot in the championship basketball game. These two scenarios are differ-ent, yet they are the same. Learning to not give up is hard, sometimes impossible, but if you stick with it, you can accomplish anything. No one can really teach you to not give up. You have to learn it by experience. So when life throws you a curveball, make the best of it.

And when others try to bring you down, stay true to yourself. If you let others get to your head, that’s when it becomes out of the question of you accom-plishing anything. Having friends and family por-tray you as giving up just makes it easier to give in and back down. From experience, I can tell you that friends and family affect me way more than I ever thought. On the other hand, having your peers may motivate you to stick with it and not lose hope. At one point or another, there are always times when you can’t take it anymore and need the courage to stay sincere. This is when it’s hard, having the feel-ing that there’s no more desire to believe.

There’s no feeling like when you realize what you have accomplished, remembering how difficult it was, but pushing through it until the end. One story was when I was having some trouble in a certain topic in math class I didn’t give up so easily. I asked to stay behind and get one on one help with the teacher, asked for extra practice worksheets, and

most impor-tantly asked tons of questions. By doing this I got an A on the test and was really satisfied with the grade knowing I tried my best and gave it my all. This is the best feeling, having it all work out in the end. Recognize how life happens for a reason and everything has a purpose.

Summer is often the time when home sales are at their peak and the tasks associated with moving can make many home sellers anxious. Seniors moving from their homes of 30-40 years are particularly in need of assistance from family, friends and even hired help.

Summer and fall typically are the busiest times for move-ins at Laurelmead Cooperative. Many of our new residents have been making plans to move for a few years; some however, just make a quick decision because they got a great offer on their Eastside home.

Most retirement communities like Laurelmead have a sales staff that provides considerable support to prospective residents before they make the ultimate decision to move. Occasionally potential buyers need help “visualizing” just how all their “stuff” is going to fit into a smaller apartment. Private con-sultants called “senior move managers” have begun to pop up and to provide services for organizing these moves.

The National Association of Senior Move Manag-ers (NASMM), a nationwide referral network for seniors looking for this type of assistance, currently have three members residing in Rhode Island. Val-erie Achorn, the founder of Simplified Lives, LLC. is someone that has been working with Laurelmead residents now for nearly 5 years. When selected to manage someone’s move, Valerie just somehow manages to simplify her client’s life.According to Valerie, “When I receive a call from a prospective resident of Laurelmead, I am prepared to help them after a very short conversation when we determine their needs.”

For many seniors, it’s not just simply finding a new home that feels good and is priced right. Dealing with the possessions accumulated over many years of home ownership is often the bigger challenge. The services of move managers like Valerie are is all encompassing and for many are indispensable.

If you would like to know more about how a move to Laurelmead can be simplified please contact the sales department by email ([email protected]) or by calling 401-273-9550.

If you would like to learn more about the secrets to a long life experienced by those living at Laurelmead, please contact Craig Evans at [email protected].

Laurelmead, Where Seniors LIVE!

If you put the accent on the second syllable, Au-GUST instead of AUGust, it means “dignified” or “increasing.” Your back yard garden may express the mood of the month, with its thick leaves and ripening fruit. On the East Side, I celebrate this eighth month in Wayland Square. I take my coffee and muffin at “Artisan,” often with my brother who lives in the Wayland Manor. This café opens to a peninsula of tables and chairs, sparrows chirping, a floating tent of colorful kite-like triangular shades, overhead, shielding you from the direct sunbeams, better than umbrellas. And then (once I have found a safe spot to park my little car without that ticking time bomb of a parking meter), I greet my friendly acquaintances, observe the children and admire the little dogs, and then move along to “Books on the Square,” to peruse the pleasures of reading...and also of writing: I buy my notecards there as well as my selection of books to take back to the beach and get ‘em all sandy and salty, down in South County.

This bookstore is in a way an entire world: you can read your autobiography to a miniature audience and sell some copies at the desk. You can make a life with words on paper. At the shore, where I spend as many torrid topaz tropical days of Au-gust as possible, I may find an even more intimate bookstore: the one in the dump on Rose Hill. All free! You drop off a text and bring back an abandoned school library paperback. The seagulls quit the sea and hang on the roofs of this hut of recyclables, where you can pick up an enormous dictionary, or simply chat with the browsers. “I want to save the world with wise words, but it’s too late!” says a fellow with a long white beard, a poetic Ancient Mariner, and I agree with him and shake his hand.

I take a few volumes to pass the time after lunch, instead of a lazy, hazy siesta, to stay out of the sun at the height of the afternoon. I’m not a Mad Dog, nor an Englishman!

So, our East Side is a civilized and cultured world, in all seasons, with its Victorian towers and sidewalk gardens. It’s also a group of blocks one wants to get away from for a few hours. In Rhode Island, that’s not a lot of miles to go, only a harrowing half hour on the highway! The exotic is barely off the beaten track.

I have the Caribbean hummingbirds at the feeder just a window from the kitchen sink. Jenny Wren still flies in and out of my birdhouse. In my city yard, the chickadees have built a nest in a replica of the Carr House mansion on Benefit Street, and a wee warbler has claimed the belly of a tin pigeon I picked up at Frog and Toad on Hope Street. The birds from the planet Earth have, like the dinosaurs from which they have evolved, centered on my portion to share it. Before the month of fall, the wilderness is here in our stubborn, small realm— the East Side and the magical world that radi-ates throughout our colony.

Library Director!

meet our new

Article submitted by: Janet Kovach-Fuentes, Director of Communications, Providence Community Library

I’m pleased to introduce Providence Community Library’s new Direc-tor, Jeffrey Cannell. Jeff brings a wealth of experience to his new post. He most recently served as Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Educa-tion of the New York State Educa-tion Department, which coordinates statewide distribution of $150 mil-lion in local assistance to libraries, library systems and archives/local records organizations. Prior to that,

he was Director of the Albany Public Library, where he oversaw the operations of a main library, five branches and a bookmo-bile. Jeff will be based at Rochambeau Library and he can’t wait to get started!

A Big Thank YouPCL has faced challenges in recent times. Readers of this page will be aware that the Library has vigorously advocated a case for increased funding from the City and State over the last few months and encouraged the whole community to support our fundraising efforts. I’m pleased to tell you that our multiple cam-paigns have been successful and we look forward to the future with renewed confidence. Thanks to everyone who has helped us on that journey – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Coming Soon – PCL Lovecraft Week It’s H.P. Lovecraft’s 126th birthday on August 20, and PCL will once again be celebrating in style! Knight Memorial Library will host a Lovecraft Meets Minecraft contest for children and teens aged 7-18. The challenge? Create a chilling, spooky or weird im-age in Minecraft based on a brief quotation from one of H.P. Love-craft’s works or a Lovecraft-influenced picture as supplied by librarians. Kids may work on computers in libraries or at home to build their creations. Once contestants are satisfied with their spine-tingling artwork, make a screen shot of the entry and hand it or send it to Knight Memorial Children’s staff in the form of a paper print or an electronic image file. Entries will be accepted August 15-20 and the winners announced on August 22. Prizes will be awarded in two age categories. For more information about Lovecraft Meet Minecraft, contact Allison Riendeau [email protected]. Be sure to check our calendar for all our Lovecraft Week events, which include creepy crafts, spooky story times and horror movie double bills, at www.provcomlib.org .

For more information about these and other PCL programs at Rochambeau (708 Hope Street, 401-272-3780), Fox Point (90 Ives Street, 401-331-0542) and all other PCL locations, visit www.provcomlib.org.
