we’re not done yet!

These are a few of the comments heard in the hallways of FPC, as

people return from mission trips or exotic vacations. They have visited a place and come back changed. Just as immersion in a different location profoundly shapes us, jour-neying through God’s word changes us forever. We hear Scripture, sermons and Sunday School lessons with new ears. We see friends, relatives, work challenges, neighbors, strangers and even the news of the day with different eyes. As time away from the everyday routine leaves us rested and refreshed, studying scripture leaves us spiritu-ally renewed, focused and grounded. Studying God’s word is a time of

getting way that helps us maintain perspective, gain appreciation, deepen trust and understanding, grow in discipline, be amazed, and widen our ability to reach out. This fall, you are invited to journey through God’s word. To date, over 500 FPC members have completed the four year Disciple Bible Study program, and new classes are being formed right now. Alternatively, FPC begins the EfM Bible Study series this fall. Underwritten by the Stembler Ministry, EfM is a four year program of study and conversation with daily readings and weekly meetings for nine months of each year. Over the course of four years, members of EfM groups examine Old Testament, New Testa-ment, Church history, and Theology. As one EfM participant at a neighbor-ing Atlanta church shares, “The EfM course gave me a ‘voice’ in which to

hon¬estly reflect and make sense of my faith journey in all aspects of my life.” Summer is winding down, and hopefully, you have been able to get away for at least a few days of vaca-tion or mission trip. Just as impor-tant is your upcoming year’s journey through God’s Word. Check the FPC web-site or call Lindsay Armstrong (404.228.7713) for details on Disciple, EfM or additional Bible studies or Book Clubs. Just as we return ex-cited or refreshed by a visit to a place that changes us forever, journeying through God’s word transforms us now and into eternity. It is a form of of getting away that helps us maintain perspective, gain appreciation, deepen trust and understanding, grow in discipline, be amazed, and widen our ability to reach out. Join us this fall and throughout the year.

“The things that you see, hear, feel and smell are indescribable.” “I have been changed forever.” “There is just no way to put it into words. Being there transforms your perspective and sharpens your world view.”

The month of June was a very busy one at Midtown Assistance Center. With the help of the our great vol-unteers, MAC was able to prevent the evictions of 68 households, prevent 73 utilities from disconnection, helped 106 individuals get to work, helped 105 fami-lies with groceries and provided 55 men with clothing for new jobs, all totaling to an amount of over $60,000. Currently Midtown Assistance Center is in desparate need of food for our food pantry. Since children our out of school, the summer is the busiest time of the year for food pantries throughout the country. Any do-nations of food would be greatly appreciated! On be-half of the MAC staff, board, and volunteers, we thank you for your continued support! MC is also in need of volunteers to work with clients, and volunteers to help with data entry. After making his fortune telling the stories of others in shows like Sein-

feld, Walker Texas Ranger, Married with Children and Mad About You, former Columbia Tri-Star Television syndica-tion executive Joe Kissack discovered he was at the center of his next story. In October 2005, a few days shy of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, fishermen Salvador Ordonez, Lucio Rendon and Jesus Vidana packed four days’ worth of food and water into a 27-foot motorboat. No one heard from them until the next August, when Taiwanese mariners rescued them off the coast of Australia, nearly 6,000 miles from home. The pov-erty-stricken sailors had been adrift in the Pacific Ocean for almost 10 months; they were lost at sea longer than anyone in recorded history. Simultaneously, the seemingly successful Kissack had been drifting through a nightmare on land. “On the outside, it looked like I was perfect,” he said. On the inside, “I didn’t want to live.”

hitting rock bottom, Kissack had a watershed moment when he felt led by God to reach out to the shipwreck survivors. Their story was one of faith and hope; Kissack wanted to tell it. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to get that story told,” he vowed. Unexpectedly but willingly he spent every dime he had because of that commitment.

What he also didn’t expect was his story powerfully connecting with theirs. So, how are three fishermen going to save another man’s marriage and change his life? Kissack’s new book explains: “The Fourth Fisherman: how Three Mexican Fishermen Changed My Life and Saved My Marriage.” Kissack himself will also tell the story and sign books at FPC on Sunday, August 21 from 9:00 – 10:00 am in Fifield Hall. All are welcome. “It’s a miracle…people said. But no one knew just how incredible the story would get.” – GQ Magazine
