  • Since its founding, the College has been promoting the cultivation of virtue and pursuit of knowledge for its students. The college motto ‘xiude jiangxue’ actually carries this meaning. It comes from a saying of Confucius. In Book VII of the Analects of Confucius, the Master said, “It is these things that cause me concern: failure to cultivate virtue; failure to go more deeply into what I have learned; inability, when I am told what is right, to go over to where it is; and inability to reform myself when I have defects.” The cultivation of virtue and the going more deeply into what one has learned are placed by Confucius at the head of the list of things that caused him concern. A man of sound moral character eagers to make new discoveries on the strength of existing knowledge is, in the eyes of Confucius, close to the ideal of the gentleman.

Based on the college motto, the college slogan has been created to echo the meaning of the motto. The college slogan is “Excellence with a soul, leadership with a heart”. It embodies the ideal of pursuing excellence with a soul and leading with a heart. This in fact aligns with the caring theme advocated by the College Head. Students are encouraged to go to the community or even overseas to contribute their efforts to help and show how they care the people in need.

L a s t y e a r , t h e C o l l e g e l a u n c h e d t h e C o m m u n i t y Service Programme attracting quite a number of students to participate. Students planned and created their own local community service projects. These projects realize the College’s caring spirit and students have benefited a lot from participating. After the earthquake in Sichuan, the rebuilding work is considered to be urgent. Through the arrangement of Wu Zhi Qiao Charitable Foundation, a college student was sent to Sichuan to have a site visit. After which, further planning on assistance to be offered is now in progress. This project will be continuing and requires the participation from more students.

    B e s i d e s t h e s i t e experience mentioned above, the College has already invited people of different background a n d w i t h u n i q u e l i f e experiences to come and deliver talks to students at the new ‘High Table Dinners’. More details on the Dinners can be found in the next article.

  • Starting from this academic year, the College has launched the High Table Dinners to replace the former Dinner Lectures. Initiated by Professor Joseph Sung, the College Head, High Table Dinners are actually a long tradition at the student halls of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Sung’s alma mater. Professor Sung learned a lot from similar activities when he was a student. He therefore would like to introduce this tradition to Shaw College.By listening to the sharing of speakers, it is hoped that students can widen their horizon in different aspects. Their participation may also enhance their sense of belongings to the College. Moreover, teachers will be invited to join and thus there will be more interaction between teachers and students.

All year two or above students are welcome to register for the Dinners. Some seats are reserved for non-local students. As most of the talks will be delivered in Cantonese, non-local students plan to join are encouraged to invite friends who know Cantonese to be their interpreters. By doing so, non-local students can learn more about Shaw College as well as having more exchange with local students.

The Dinners are set as formal occasions for students to meet with the speakers, mingle with teachers and their peers. A reception will be held before the dinners to allow students to chat with the guests and get to know teachers attending. Dinner and talk will then follow. Each time, two students will host the talk and interview the guest speakers. Background information research is necessary to facilitate the talk. Purpose of which is to let students learn and experience how to be interviewers. Also, with their inputs and involvement, the talk will be more interactive.

Speakers have been specially chosen and they are often with unique life experiences. For the first term, the College has invited Mr. Ching Cheong (famous media worker), Pun Chai (paralysis patient who writes a book on euthanasia), Professor Sydney Chung (former Dean of Faculty of

    Medicine, CUHK) Mr. Eric Suen (Shaw alumnus and singer) and Mr. Chong Chan-yau (Director o f S t u d e n t D e v e l o p m e n t , Personal Development and Counselling Centre, HKU).

    M r . C h i n g C h e o n g and Pun Chai spoke at the H i g h Ta b l e D i n n e r s o n 16 September and 30 September 2008 respectively. Each talk attracts over 100 participants. Students in general responded a c t i v e l y a n d p o s i t i v e l y t o the sharing.

  • The Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences 2008 was shared by Professor Vladimir Arnold and Professor Ludwig Faddeev for their fundamental and wide spread contributions to Mathematical Physics. The Shaw Prize Lecture by these two Laureates was hosted by Shaw College on 10 September 2008, which was well received by more than 500 colleagues and students from various institutions the public in Hong Kong. Each Laureate presented in about half an hour their views and perspectives on Mathematical Sciences, Mathematical Physics, and the natural roles played by mathematics in sciences in general. A question-and-answer session then followed. Contrary to the common belief that such high level mathematical talks could be very abstracted and difficult to understand for a general audience, the lectures are very educational, inspiring, lively, and interesting for most of the students in the audience.

Professor Arnold is one of the world’s most prolific mathematicians, who has made fundamental contributions in numerous areas of mathematics including dynamical

system theory, classical and celestial mechanics, singularity theory, topology, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, hydro-dynamics, mathematical physics, and combinatorial theory. Many of his results have important applications in other branches of sciences. He is wildly admired by his ability to discover the natural interrelations between very different subjects. In his lecture titled “Mathematics of Chaos”, Professor Arnold illustrated through simple and concrete examples how to naturally relate the randomness of a sequence of numbers to the ergodic theor y in dynamical systems, number theory, combinatorics, and

cryptography. He emphasized the experimental aspects of his studies of chaotic behavior of mathematical objects. He argued strongly against the common opinion that mathematics is a chain of deductive reasonings, leading from one well established fact to the other. Instead, a good mathematician has to use hundreds of examples, hints, conjectures, rather than the rigorous deductions, to obtain any new knowledge.

In the lecture named “What is Quantum Mathematical Physics”, Professor Faddeev describes the evolution of the term “Mathematical Physics” and relations between Mathematical Physics and Theoretical Physics by some examples from his

own scientific life. MP used to be mathematical methods for theoretical physics. However, the advent of Quantum Mechanics led a completely new content for the MP, the quantum MP, where functional analysis (especially spectrum theory), Lie groups, modern algebraic topology and geometric ideas became an essential tool. Professor Faddeev stated that although the goals of Theoretical Physics and MP are essentially the same, yet the methodological aspects are rather different. As a founder of the Quantum Mathematical Physics, Professor Faddeev may be the most qualified speaker for this topic. It is

very interesting to me to hear from Professor Faddeev the role of mathematics played in his successful scientific life!

There were many interesting ideas in both lectures. One common theme is that the goal of mathematical physics is not only to prove theorems about the results known to physicists, but rather to use mathematical intuitions and powers to get new results, still unknown to physicists. This should be true for all other branches of applied mathematics.

Professor Xin Zhouping is the Associate Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was the moderator at the Lecture.

Professor Michael Tam, Associate Dean (Student Affairs) of Faculty of Medicine and Head of Department of Physiology loves diving. His exploration of the underwater world started six years ago. During the past six years, he has taken many nice photos. Professor Tam likes to go to places along the Pacific Rim and he usually makes four trips per year. Other than traveling around the magnificent underwater world, he enjoys very much the quietness and rather primitiveness at places where he dives. Professor Tam has chosen three photos from his collections to share with the readers.
