Storytelling City project pairs UK and Korean w

together in order to work closely together in the

production of new creative w

orks of writing and

graphic novels/webtoons. The collaboration w

ill take place over a series of visits to both Korea and the UK and both the process and the final outcom

Book Festival and Bradford Literature Festival next year, and online in both countries.

The rapid changes of the city through architecture, environm

ent, economic structure,

public space and comm

unity have brought enorm

ous changes to the daily lives of humans

in the city. How should the arts integrate these

ever-changing circumstances in the city? W

hat role do the arts and technology play in the developm

ent and culture of a city? And how can

the arts and technology provide people in the cities w

ith opportunities to think about the city in m

ore diverse, different and inclusive w

ays. Artists, curators, producers, and policy m

akers from

UK and Korea will share and discuss their

views and ideas, and w

ill question about the role of arts and culture for the future city. Part I

can a city’s cultural identity play a role in building its industries and com

hat role do arts play in the developm

ent and culture of a city?

Part II Creatives’ views of the City

Artists, producers and curators from Connected City, Seoul

Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism and Busan Inter-

city projects will share their experiences in taking part of

these city projects. Creatives will talk about their findings,

challenges and learning points, and then will share som

e suggestions for the developm

ent of cultural identity in the city.

UK/Korea 2017–18 presents a year-long cultural programm

e with

five thematic approaches. These are City-to-City, Transform

ation and Innovation through Digital Technology, Diversity and Inclusion, Creative Entrepreneurship and Creative Learning. Throughout the year w

e share the UK’s innovation and excellence. W

e also develop creative practices by fostering new approaches

and pushing boundaries through artistic collaborations between

artists and arts organisations from both countries.

Urban Regeneration Project at Seoul Station Area aims to

revitalise and enrich the vicinity of cultural value and locality to im

prove the quality of life for local residents within the Seoul

Station area - the international gateway to Seoul. Through

public-private cooperation, it carries out various activities of im

proving the physical environment, building a com

munity

network and vitalising culture and arts.

Employing architecture and urbanism

as media, Seoul Biennale

of Architecture and Urbanism (Seoul Biennale) encom

passes a w

ide range of fields to engage in the present and future cities of the w

orld and to seek innovative design and policy alternatives.

missions artists to com

pose original m

usic in response to a particular aspect of the city that inspires them

. Seven musicians

from UK and Korea have com

posed music for

seven locations. These exclusive tracks are geo-tagged and can be heard by visiting each location.

Playable City will host a suite of specially created

Playable City Experiences. This mini festival of

Urban Play will invite the public to explore and

reimagine public space along and surrounding

the Cheonggyecheon Stream. Based around the

themes of the Connected City, these specially

comm

issioned projects will facilitate m

embers of

the public to explore their environment in new

and exciting w

ays.

Through Performing City various w

orks such as Chorus, a collective of m

onumental and trans-

fixing sound sculptures by sound artist Ray Lee, a collaborative perform

ance by UK musician

from M

usicity and Korean choreographer, Small

Wonder Tour, a tour of m

icroscopic world and

VR Playground, an imm

ersive installation by Brendan W

alker are introduced.

The Seoul Station and Dongdaemun area have

a rich heritage of clothing manufacturing and

leather shoe production. These areas are now

under a threat due to the recent changes to urban infrastructure, along w

ith gentrification. Through M

aker City, the manufacturing district

will be explored through reinterpreting the

businesses, promoting artistic collaboration

and exchange between m

akers and artists.

Connected City aims to develop a platform

to re-shape, re-explore, re-im

agine and re-connect the city we live in.

ith artists, producers, curators and com

munities from

UK and Korea, Connected City w

ill introduce innovative practices on ever-changing com

munities and public spaces in the city through

various arts forms and technology.
