president Barack Obama greets the 2010 Pres-
idential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathemat-
ics and Engineering Mentoring recipients in the Oval
Office, Dec. 12, 2011.
President Obama has named Ethiopian American
Physicist Solomon Bililign as one of the nation's
"Outstanding Science, Math, and Engineering Men-
tors."
Elilta had a chance to ask Dr. Solomon a few ques-
tions about his walk with the Lord.
1/ When did you come to know the Lord and how did
it happen?
My life journey is very different from most Christians.
Faith and belief didn’t come easy. I don’t have a dra-
matic conversion experience. I have had doubts and
questions. I spent over five years in prison under the
military government in Ethiopia. I saw my friends dis-
appear and get killed daily. I saw horrible tortures and
I was myself tortured. I never thought I will leave
prison alive.
I had given up hope. My father died while I was in
prison, so many members of my family were killed.
Young and very innocent people died. When I was
released I didn’t believe it.
Survivor’s guilt was haunting me after I left prison. I
kept asking why me? Why am I left alive? And for
what purpose? I was searching for meaning in my life.
I want also to add that while in prison I was provided
support by a Christian sister (family member) who
despite my rebellion took it upon herself to visit me
regularly. Another Christian in prison also witnessed
the love of God and God’s peace by the way he lived
in the prison. He was calm and always prayerful and
filled with joy in a place where there is no reason to be
joyful. The life of these people also brought questions
to me? What do they know or have that I don’t have. I
had two choices. Get drunk to numb my mind or get
absorbed in the study of physics to forget all the pain.
I chose the latter. But I was also haunted by the ques-
tion why me? Why am I spared?
Dr. Solomon Bilign
That led me to find meaning to my life and decided
to try the Christian faith. I went to a pastor and asked
for prayer. I started a long journey of following
Christ and wanting to know more about him. I have
struggled; there have been ups and downs. I have
survived and continued on the journey. I am still on a
journey,
2/ Can you share with us your first few years sal-
vation experience in your own way?
As I said I am still on a journey. The disciples that
followed Jesus 2000 years ago didn’t have the foggi-
est idea of what they had gotten into when they fol-
lowed Jesus. With a simple follow me, Jesus invited
ordinary people to come out and be part of an adven-
ture that surprised them at every turn. They were in-
vited to be faithful. When I decided to follow him
that day about 26 years ago I knew I was jumping
into a moving train to become part of the Journey
that began long before I got here and continue long
after I am gone. By reading the Bible I felt that God
was telling me a story of his people and how they
dealt with human fear, confusion and paralysis. By
listening to it I came to see the significance and co-
herence of my life as an element and part of a great
story of God’s people.
As I follow Jesus he has unburdened me of much of
the baggage the world considers essential. He relived
me from false baggage, the necessity to trust not my
possessions, careers, family and friends, etc but only
28
29
have happened: Marriage, with a loving and godly wife,
beautiful children, career, worldly recognition, and
most important joy that nothing in the world can ever
offer, but also suffering and loss of loved ones, betray-
als, disappointments, broken relationships.
Being part of the journey and the story has given me an
identity, and knowing who I am by the power and pur-
pose of God I am given a power to be free from social
forces, prejudices, emotions that deceive the lives of so
many who do not know Jesus and are not on the jour-
ney. My enemies, the wider society, my past cannot
define who I am or decide the significance of who I
was, since God in Christ has already done that for me.
Jesus admits that his way goes against about everything
we have heard, everything that comes naturally or ra-
tionally, “you have been told… But I say to you…”
The transformation that comes as part of this journey
has helped me to see the world in a different light.
3/ what are the highlights of your walk with the
Master through the years?
Every day with Jesus is a highlight, because the journey
always takes me to different places and experiences.
It’s never static. It is not a routine that is done every
Sunday or a sermon told by someone. The personal
connection always brings new things. Each day is new
for me and each day brings its challenges, struggles, but
knowing He is with me makes the whole difference. No
challenge no pain or no suffering has taken away the
joy I have by being part of the journey
It is God’s kindness that leads me to repentance and
keeps me following Him. Others can experience God’s
kindness through me. I have always believed disciple-
ship is showing faith in practice and how we deal with
failures, pain and problems in life as Christians and
how God deals with us. We are to show the world a
manner of life the world can never achieve through so-
cial coercion or governmental action.
Christianity is an invitation to be a part of a group
of people who make a difference because they are
something that cannot otherwise be seen without
Christ. We are by our very nature violent, fright-
ened creatures but with the pledge that if we offer
ourselves to a truthful story and community
formed by listening to and enacting that story the
church will be transformed into people more sig-
nificant than we could ever have been on our own.
When I admit my mistakes, when I show sorrow if
I hurt someone, when I don’t carry guilt around,
when I stop acting like we don’t sin any more
(which is the illusion most Christians have and
often the source of our judgmental attitude), when
I become authentic and honest about my mistakes,
struggles, challenges in life and when people see
how God is dealing with my struggle, then I can
show Christ to others. Repentance has allowed me
to change, and it is a continuous process and a
way of living for me. I repent daily as I fail every
day. Only our “sorrow can lead to repentance “(2nd
Corinth. 9) “Godly sorrow brings repentance that
leads to Salvation but leaves no regret, but world-
ly sorry brings death” (2nd Corn. 10) Sorrow turns
into Joy and salvation and to freedom when we
are free to admit mistakes.
4/ how was your life experience in the USA be-
ing a born again Christian especially among
intellectuals?
I prefer to call myself a follower of Jesus as I
don’t think most intellectuals are against God, but
want to question and get a clear understanding of
things. Most intellectuals know that we cannot
explain everything with our intellect. The prob-
lem is as Christians our life has been full of con-
tradictions and we have failed to show
27
30
Christ in our lives, we have failed as true witness-
es of the love of Christ and we have degenerated
into being judgmental and in some cases instru-
ments of political forces.
When we live as followers of Christ people see an
alternative. Non-believing and even atheist intel-
lectuals have asked me to pray for them when they
are confronted with difficulties in life. I don’t
think Intellectuals are against Christians, they are
against the hypocrisy, irrationality judgmentalism
and dogmatism and superficiality. Intellectuals
respect authentic Christians even when they don’t
agree with them. So I am always clear about my
beliefs and who I follow. I don’t try to arm twist
anyone or condemn anyone for not being like me.
I interact with all who are willing to interact, listen
and exchange my views, and try to the best of my
ability to live an authentic uncompromised life
The Christian who is truly intimate with Jesus will
never draw attention to himself, but will only
show the evidence of a life where Jesus is com-
pletely in control. He wants to show not what he
has done but what God did. This is the outcome of
allowing Jesus to satisfy every area of life to its
depth. The picture resulting from such a life is that
of strong, calm balance that our Lord gives to
those who are intimate with Him and follow him
daily.
Once the Love of God has been poured out in our
hearts by the Holy Spirit we deliberately begin to
identify ourselves with Jesus Christ’s interest and
purpose in others lives. Jesus has interest in every
individual person. We have no right in our Chris-
tian service to be guided by our desire, that is in
fact one of the greatest tests of our relationship
with Jesus
If we are true followers, we cannot compart-
mentalize our life between the material and the
spiritual. Our life should be a life of worship, ser-
vice, and meditation on his word not just on Sun-
days, but everyday and everywhere.
True worship, the really spiritual worship, is the
offering of one’s body, and all that one does
every day with it to God. Real worship is the
offering of everyday life to God. Real worship
is not something, which is transacted in a
church; real worship is something, which sees
the whole world as the temple of the living God,
and every common deed as an act of worship.
As much as we say we go to church to worship
God, we should be able to say I am going to the
factory, to the shop, to the office, to school, to
the mine and to the garden to worship God. To
worship and serve God we must undergo a
change, not of our outward form but of our in-
ward personality of the very essence of our be-
ing.
Intellectuals are ordinary everyday people, with
deep human needs of love, affection and ac-
ceptance. They struggle like everyone else. The
only difference is they likely are more rational
and tend to reason and challenge different views
to get to the truth. They don’t take things for
granted or accept what others say at face value.
I think this is positive and wish every Christian
was an intellectual. We only need to show them
that intellect is a gift from God and should be
used for his glory.
I personally don’t like the word “born again” as
it has been associated with everything negative,
and dogmatic and personality cults and big
name televangelists and fundamentalism that
offers us a Jesus who supports our military
might and helps us to stick it to other nations, a
Jesus who wants us to vote for the next candi-
date for emperor or president, a Jesus who re-
wards the righteous with wealth, power and po-
sition, and punishes the poor, who wouldn’t be
so downtrodden had they made better choices,
this version of Jesus, the imperial Jesus is in-
deed not the one I want to be associated with.

5/How would you like to explain your education-
al achievement in relation to your faith in
Christ? In your opinion what is the proper place
of achievements (like educational) in a Christian
life?
I always thought that I fall into temptation because
of my weakness. When we focus only on the gifts
given to us, or gifts manifested in us, we are tempt-
ed into using these gifts for self-glory, and to look
down on others. But we are never tempted as much
by our weaknesses as by our strengths. A unique
gift, (could be healing power or being successful in
ones career either as a preacher or a scientist) capa-
bility (the ability to do great things) or recognition
of any kind leads to self-exaltation. Our temptations
come out of the world in which we live. The greater
our responsibility, the greater is the range of free-
dom, and the greater the temptation to forget our
responsibility to God and exalt ourselves above all
others, including God. Our ability to control and
order things, our technology that allows us to do so
many wonders, our ability to do unprecedented
things in medicine and science, or even our ability
to preach and bring large crowds to follow us tempt
us to think there is nothing we cannot do, given
time. All these lead us all too easily to feel that we
are masters of our own destiny. Human greatness is
our problem.
Worldly success often creates the illusion that we
are where we are because of our hard work, our own
strength and capability or even our own holiness
and spiritual strength and we are tempted to attrib-
ute all our success to our own achievement). We
forget that the gifts we have, even the gift to work
hard is given to us by God who created us. What we
are and what we own belongs to him. It is also good
to think that there are so many others in this world
who deserve such an honor.
When we fail to acknowledge God for our success,
and fail to recognize that God is the source and
owner of all gifts,
we also fail to ask why God favored us for this
gift or honor. God puts us where he puts us, or
showers us with the gift of knowledge, or wealth,
not for our benefit and self indulgence. He does it
for his glory and honor. There is a temptation to
forget our responsibility to serve him and end up
serving ourselves. We need to recognize that true
grace was not only a privilege and a gift, but also
a responsibility and obligation. What I do with it
is more important.
Christian humility comes from setting life besides
the life of Christ and in the light of the demands
of god. God is perfection, to satisfy perfection is
impossible. It is when we compare ourselves with
perfection that we see our own failure. The Chris-
tian standard is Jesus Christ, and the demands of
the perfection of God- and against that standard
there is no room for pride. Looking to Jesus daily
is the only way not to think too highly of myself
and getting intoxicated by all the attention.
6/ What last advice would you like to give to
Christian intellectuals, professionals and our
community in general?
I am not sure if I am qualified to give anyone ad-
vice, but I have a duty to share my experience and
my understanding, hoping others will relate to my
experience.
First for me following Christ is to worship him.
Worship is a daily act not limited by space and
surrounding. Worship is an act of the whole be-
ing, uniting intellect with emotion, integrating
reason with feeling
Man’s way leads to a hopeless
end - God’s way leads to an
endless hope
29
32
combining thought with affection summoning both
our brains layers and capacities in joyful love and
loving joy. Make God the first supervisor or cus-
tomer of our work. For a chef whose life has been
offered to God as a loving sacrifice of worship
seeks to prepare each meal as if Christ is the only
customer, teacher teaches as if each student were
the Lord, Gardner, programmer, project manager,
administrative assistant, politician, sales person
seek to serve, honor and worship God as they wa-
ter, program, manage, assist, govern, sell - make
their work sacred in His way.
Second overcome hypocrisy; which is a desire to
appear more spiritual than we actually are. We need
to remain authentic and that requires a practice of
self-examination and confession acknowledging the
tragic gap between our appearance and our actuali-
ty. Confession helps us affirm the truth of our own
becoming-helping us become better and sweeter,
helping us affirm the truth that God is gracious and
compassionate. Being authentic is admitting that
we have struggles and fail at times and we are sin-
ful and not covering it up or disguising it with an
appearance of spirituality.
Our connection with others should never be
through performance “look how well I am doing”
but through grace “look how much I have been for-
given” Our prayer should be to remake us in his
image not to remake the world for our convenience.
We ask to be blessed not just for us but more so we
can be a blessing to others. We ask for healing so
we can be a healer of others. We ask for provision
me not just so that we can be comfortable but more
so that we can provide for others and bring comfort
to them also. We pray for safety so that we will not
cause pain to others but be a source of joy for them.
In our relationship with others, before we look for
the flaws which gives us excuse to reject, let us
look for goodness which will give us reason to re-
spect, instead of looking for doubts to flee and fear,
rather we look for possibilities to pursue and en-
courage.
We are all made in God’s image and we all have flaws
and weaknesses. Admitting that will help us see the
good in others.
We should all be ready to serve. Call to service may be
offensive if all we seek is fame, comfort advantage,
safety and stature. To be Spirit filled is to be surren-
dered to the spirit so the fruit of the spirit and the gift of
spirit flow from our lives. The inner peace of the river
of God doesn’t bring personal calm to our individual
lives alone. The world changes as we are changed.
Peace comes to the world as peace flows into our inner-
most being and out through us to others.
We may be frustrated and lose hope when we see fellow
Christians fail to live up to what is expected of them.
But we need to only look at Jesus and wait on the Lord-
do not slide back into anger and anxiety, don’t rush
ahead don't rush to judgment, so not demand a quick
solution, don’t assume the worst don’t presume an an-
swer is forthcoming- just wait, relax rest. Do not feel
the situation has to be fixed.
Most choose to wrestle in the dark, look the other way
or just keep busy seeking various ways of being im-
portant- ‘building bigger barns’.. Life becomes a series
of manufactured dramas, entertainment and diversion-
ary tactics intended to help them avoid the substantial
question- avoidance of intimacy with life, with others
and God in the consumer culture. Most people in our
culture spend life looking at ourselves in the mirror so
we find ourselves with fragile and rapidly changing
identities needing a lot of affirmation. Most young peo-
ple have identities built on feelings, moods and ideas
that are easily manipulated by everything around them
including advertising and selling of superficial images.
Wisdom is not the gathering of more facts and infor-
mation as if that will eventually coalesce into truth.
Wisdom is precisely a different way of seeing and
knowing those ten thousand things. Wisdom is freedom
to be present. Presence is wisdom- people who are fully
present know how to fully see mightily and truthfully.

“U.S. President Barack Obama has appointed re-
nowned Scientist Gebisa Ejeta to key administrative
post. In a press
release posted on
the White House
website, the state-
ment said, Presi-
dent Obama has
appointed the
Ethiopian born
scientist as a
Board Member
for International
Food and Agriculture Development. Gebisa Ejeta, a
native of Ethiopia, is currently a Professor at Purdue
University and serves as the Executive Director of the
Purdue Center for Global Food Security.” Finding
news from the media in which Ethiopia is mentioned
in positive light is a rare case scenario. But we grab
such an opportunity- if it ever occurred- and enjoy it
to the last drop. That was what happened to many of
us who have just few months to that appointment,
scientist had been awarded the most prestigious award
in agriculture. The news that reported the award reads
“Dr. Gebisa Ejeta of Ethiopia has been named winner
of the $250,000 World Food Prize for his monumental
contributions in the production of sorghum, one of the
world’s five principal cereal grains, which have dra-
matically enhanced the food supply of hundreds of
millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa.”
To put it in a lay man wording what this Ethio-
pian accomplished is that he discovered a sor-
ghum hybrid variety tolerant to drought that
out-yielded traditional varieties by up to 150
percent. His findings were tested in several Afri-
can nations including Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya,
Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, So-
malia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe and
proved to be drought resistant with a yield in-
crease as much as four times the yield of local
varieties, even in severe drought areas. Today
this hybrid is growing in several countries in the
world feeding millions and saving lives. One can
easily imagine the drought and famine in Africa
might have killed thousands more if it was not
for such a discovery. And one also wishes to
have many Ejetas who can bring a meaningful
change to our society. It’s not the fame or the
award that matters; what matters most is giving
to one’s community something that could some-
how shake-off the everyday-burden of its mem-
bers.
The award this Ethiopian scientist earned was of
high-status that the actual ceremony was at-
tended by high level international dignitaries.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was
the featured speaker as Dr. Ejeta was announced
as the Laureate at a ceremony at the U.S. State
Department on June 11 that also featured Secre-
tary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, World Food
Prize President Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn,
and World Food Prize Chairman John Ruan III,
among others.
One of the news websites put the background as
follows.
Dr.Gabissa Ejeta
31
34
“Dr. Ejeta’s personal journey would lead him
from a childhood in a one-room thatched hut in
rural Ethiopia to the height of scientific acclaim
as a distinguished professor, plant breeder, and
geneticist at Purdue University. His work with
sorghum, which is a staple in the diet of 500
million people living in sub-Saharan Africa, be-
gan in Ethiopia in the 1970s. Working in Sudan
in the early 1980s, he developed Hageen Dura-
1, the first ever commercial hybrid sorghum in
Africa. This hybrid variety was tolerant to
drought and out-yielded traditional varieties by
up to 150 percent.
Dr. Ejeta next turned his attention to battling
the scourge of Striga, a deadly parasitic weed
which devastates farmers’ crops and severely
limits food availability. Working with a col-
league at Purdue University, he discovered the
biochemical basis of Striga’s relationship with
sorghum, and was able to produce many sor-
ghum varieties resistant to both drought and
Striga. In 1994, eight tons of Dr. Ejeta’s drought
and Striga-resistant sorghum seeds were distrib-
uted to Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozam-
bique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan,
Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Yield increases were
as much as four times the yield of local varieties,
even in severe drought areas.
“By ridding Africa of the greatest biological im-
pediment to food production, Dr. Ejeta has put
himself in the company of some of the greatest
researchers and scientists recognized by this
award over the past 23 years,” said Vilsack. “The
Obama Administration is inspired by the tireless
efforts of Dr. Ejeta has demonstrated in the bat-
tle to eliminate food insecurity and is commit-
ted to employing a comprehensive approach to
tackle the scourge of world hunger.”
Dr. Ejeta’s scientific breakthroughs in
breeding drought-tolerant and Striga-
resistant sorghum have been combined
with his persistent efforts to foster eco-
nomic development and the empower-
ment of subsistence farmers through the
creation of agricultural enterprises in ru-
ral Africa. He has led his colleagues in
working with national and local authori-
ties and nongovernmental agencies so
that smallholder farmers and rural entre-
preneurs can catalyze efforts to improve
crop productivity, strengthen nutritional
security,
increase the value of agricultural prod-
ucts, and boost the profitability of agri-
cultural enterprise – thus fostering pro-
found impacts on lives and livelihoods on
broader scale across the African conti-
nent.
“Dr. Ejeta’s accomplishments in improv-
ing sorghum illustrate what can be
achieved when cutting-edge technology
and international cooperation in agricul-
ture are used to uplift and empower the
world’s most vulnerable people,” added
Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, founder of the
World Food Prize. “His life is as an inspi-
ration for young scientists around the
world.”
The 2009 World Food Prize will be for-
mally presented to Dr. Ejeta at a ceremo-
ny at the Iowa State Capitol on October
15, 2009. The ceremony will be held as
part of the World Food Prize’s 2009 Bor-
laug Dialogue, which focuses on “Food,
Agriculture and National Security in a
Globalized World.” 32

Clinton Speaks at 2009 World Food Prize An-
nouncement Ceremony Young Gebisa Ejeta as a
grad student at Purdue in 1974
Born in 1950, Gebisa Ejeta grew up in a one-
room thatched hut with a mud floor, in a rural
village in west-central Ethiopia.
His mother’s deep belief in education and her
struggle to provide her son with access to local
teachers and schools provided the young Ejeta
with the means to rise out of poverty and hard-
ship. His mother made arrangements for him to
attend school in a neighboring town.
Walking 20 kilometers every Sunday night to
attend school during the week and then back
home on Friday, he rapidly ascended through
eight grades and passed the national exam quali-
fying him to enter high school.
Ejeta’s high academic standing earned him finan-
cial assistance and entrance to the secondary-
level Jimma Agricultural and Technical School,
which had been established by Oklahoma State
University under the U.S. government’s Point
Four Program. After graduating with distinction,
Ejeta entered Alemaya College (also established
by OSU and supported by the U.S. Agency for
International Development) in eastern Ethiopia.
He received his bachelor’s degree in plant science
in 1973.
In 1973, his college mentor introduced Ejeta to a
renowned sorghum researcher, Dr. John Axtell of
Purdue University, who invited him to assist in
collecting sorghum species from around the
country.
Dr. Axtell was so impressed with Ejeta that
he invited him to become his graduate stu-
dent at Purdue University. This invitation
came at a time when Ethiopia was about to
enter a long period of political instability
which would keep Ejeta from returning to
his home country for nearly 25 years.
Ejeta entered Purdue in 1974, earning his
Ph.D. in plant breeding and genetics. He
later became a faculty member at Purdue,
where today he holds a distinguished pro-
fessorship. Read more at worldfoodprize.org

February 7 is a notable
historical day for the ac-
knowledgment of God in
modern America: it is the
day that a sermon was
reached before President
Dwight D. Eisenhower,
suggesting that the words
"under God" be added to the pledge. The sermon was
preached by the Rev. George M. Docherty, pastor of
New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington,
D. C. (you can download and see the full sermon, with
his notes and additions).
This sermon was preached for Lincoln Day, and it had a
great impact on those listening, including President Ei-
senhower, who was seated in the same pew that Abra-
ham Lincoln had regularly occupied in that church as
President. In that sermon Docherty stated:
There was something missing in the pledge, and that which
was missing was the characteristics and definitive factor in

repeat a similar pledge to their hammer and sickle flag in
Moscow with equal solemnity.
He made the point that the American pledge as it then ex-
isted could just have been recited by citizens from any
country, even those from communistic nations that hated
God. The day following the sermon, U. S. Rep. Charles Oak
man from Michigan introduced a Joint Resolution (H. J. Res
371) to add the words "Under God" into the pledge, ex-
plaining:
Mr. Speaker, I think Mr. Docherty hit the nail squarely on
the head. One of the most fundamental differences be-
tween us and the Communists is our belief in God.
Two days later, on February 10th, Senator Homer Ferguson
from Michigan introduced the Senate Joint Resolution (S.J.
126), explaining to the Senate:
Our nation is founded on a fundamental believe in God,
and the first and most important reason for the existence
of our government is to protect the God-given rights of our
Indeed, Mr. President, over one of the doorways to this
very Chamber inscribed in the marble are the words “In
God We Trust.” Unless those words amount to more than
a carving in stone, our country will never be able to de-
fend itself.
These resolutions were passed, and on June 14, 1954
(Flag Day), President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill
into law, officially adding the words "under God" into the
Pledge of Allegiance, telling the nation:
From this day forward, the millions of our school children
will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village
and rural school house, the dedication of our nothing
could be more inspiring than to contemplate this rededi-
cation of our nothing could be more inspiring than to
youth, on each school morning, to our country's true mean-
ing. . . . In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of
religious faith in America's
heritage and future; in this
way we shall constantly
strengthen those spiritual
weapons which forever will be
our country's most powerful
resource, in peace or in war.
Who could have imagined
that a single sermon could
have such an impact? Yet American history is full of such
accounts. On February 7th, take time to read this remarka-
ble sermon, remembering that we are indeed "one nation
under God."

FCC cracks down on
religious broadcasters
Th e churches were granted FCC exemptions
from closed captioning in 2006.
By BROOKS BOLIEK | 10/31/11 3:29 PM EDT
If a church broadcasts the word of God on TV with-
out closed captions, it risks incurring the wrath of the
FCC.
Some 300 small- to medium-sized churches can ex-
pect letters from the commission within the next few
days explaining why their closed captioning exemp-
tions were lifted for TV shows like “Power in the
Word” and “Producing Kingdom Citizens.”
The FCC has been mailing the letters for the past few
days to churches from Maine to California, explaining
that the hundreds of exemptions are now rescinded
and giving the programmers 90 days to reapply.
The churches were granted FCC exemptions from the
closed captioning requirement under a 2006 commission
decision known as the “Anglers Order” for the Anglers
for Christ Ministries program that had argued for exemp-
tion from the rules.
While the FCC’s Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bu-
reau used the Anglers Order as the model to grant at
least 298 other exemptions, the full commission over-
turned that decision Oct. 20 after objections were raised
from a coalition of organizations for the deaf and hard of
hearing.
The churches may still be eligible to win an exemption
from the rules if they can prove they can’t afford closed
captioning, but they now have to make their case individ-
ually.
“This was a process that went awry,” said Craig Parshall,
senior vice president of the National Religious Broadcast-
ers, an international association of Christian communica-
tors. “Now, we are going back to Square One.”
Advocacy groups for the deaf contend that the bureau
erred when it granted the exemptions en masse because
that created a virtual blanket exemption for nonprofit
organizations. Under the closed captioning law, program-
mers can win an exemption if they can prove that the
cost of the captioning will cause an undue economic
hardship.
The groups wrote to the FCC asking commissioners to
overrule the bureau order arguing that the order
“improperly and unilaterally established a new class of
exempt programming.”
While the commission’s decision has an immediate im-
pact on churches across the country, it isn’t directed at
religious organizations in particular, Parshall said. Small-
and medium-sized churches just happened to apply for
exemptions under the closed captioning law’s exception
for TV shows where paying for captioning is an undue
economic burden, Parshall explained.

Advocates for the deaf said they were pleased
the commission was taking action on the issue,
and hoped that it would make more program-
ming accessible to the deaf and hearing im-
paired.
“Now, we look forward to viewing more TV
shows that were not captioned before,” said Jim
House, spokesman for Telecommunications for
the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc. “It is our hope
that those producers affected by the decision
would see the positive benefits of making their
shows accessible to more and more viewers and
find that it is the right thing to do.”
Religious broadcasters want to reach the deaf
community, but requiring churches across the
country to close caption their TV programs could
force the programming off the air, Parshall said.
“We believe our message needs to get out to the
deaf and disabled communities,” Parshall ex-
plained. “All we want is a sensible regulatory
structure that recognizes the plight of the small
Christian broadcaster.”

Pike County church bans inter-
racial couples from membership
T he Gulnare Freewill Baptist church vot-
ed not to allow interracial couples to
place membership or be used in wor-
ship services or church functions.
A woman says she cannot attend the Pike County
church she grew up in because her fiance is from
Africa.
The Gulnare Freewill Baptist church members
voted not to allow interracial couples to place
membership or be used in worship services or
church functions.
Stella Harville, known as Suzie, and her fiance do not live
in Pike County but attend services at the church when she
is at home.
Harville wants the church to change its stance.
Harville met Ticha Chikuni at Georgetown College. They
fell in love and are recently engaged. However, she says
the news was not well received when she came home to
Pike County and attended the Gulnare Freewill Baptist
Church.
On Sunday, church members voted 9-6 to not condone
interracial marriage.
WYMT obtained a copy of the resolution. It states:
"That the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church does not con-
done interracial marriage. Parties of such marriages will
not be received as members, nor will they be used in
worship services and other church functions, with the
exception being funerals.
All are welcome to our public worship services. This rec-
ommendation is not intended to judge the salvation of
anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among
the church body and the community we serve."
Harville talked to WYMT's Angela Sparkman on the
phone. She said, "It's just a travesty, especially of Christi-
anity, that this church feels this way. They've crossed the
line in revoking my fiancé and mine's right to worship in a
public place. It hurts even more that I have attended this
church ever since I was a baby."
Ticha Chikuni is originally from Zimbabwe but he has lived
in the United States for eleven years
"He just has one of the kindest hearts for God and then
this is happening. People who have backwards way of
thinking, they should know that their racism actions
should not and will not be tolerated," said Hartville.
Church member Melvin Thompson who started the initia-
tive told WYMT he would not comment.
The church's pastor, Stacey Stepp told WYMT he is trying
to resolve the issue and that everyone is welcome at the
Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church.
"I'm not going to wish harmful things for these members
who have put my family through this, but they should

know their actions will not be tolerated," said
Hartville.
The couple is planning their July wedding which will
take place out of Pike County.
WYMT also talked to Harville's parents who are
members at the church. During the church's
Wednesday meeting, they will ask the church to
change its decision.
If not, then they plan to leave the church and look
for a new church to worship.

Court: Judges cannot get in-
volved in church dispute
By JESSE J. HOLLAND | Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a groundbreaking case, the
Supreme Court on Wednesday held for the first time
that religious employees of a church cannot sue for
employment discrimination.
But the court's unanimous decision in a case from
Michigan did not specify the distinction between a
secular employee, who can take advantage of the
government's protection from discrimination and
retaliation, and a religious employee, who can't.
It was, nevertheless, the first time the high court has
acknowledged the existence of a "ministerial excep-
tion" to anti-discrimination laws — a doctrine devel-
oped in lower court rulings. This doctrine says the
First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of religion
shields churches and their operations from the
reach of such protective laws when the issue in-
volves employees of these institutions.
The case came before the court because the federal
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued
the Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and
School of Redford, Mich., on behalf of employee
Cheryl Perich, over her firing, which happened after
she complained of discrimination under the Ameri-
cans with Disabilities Act.
Writing the court's opinion, Chief Justice John Rob-
erts said allowing anti-discrimination lawsuits
against religious organizations could end up forcing
churches to take religious leaders they no longer
want.
"Such action interferes with the internal govern-
ance of the church, depriving the church of control
over the selection of those who will personify its
beliefs," Roberts said. "By imposing an unwanted
minister, the state infringes the Free Exercise
Clause, which protects a religious group's right to
shape its own faith and mission through its ap-
pointments."
The court's decision will make it virtually impossi-
ble for ministers to take on their employers for be-
ing fired for complaining about issues like sexual
harassment, said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive
director of Americans United.
"Clergy who are fired for reasons unrelated to
matters of theology — no matter how capricious or
venal those reasons may be — have just had the
courthouse door slammed in their faces," Lynn
said.
But Douglass Laycock, who argued the case for Ho-
sanna-Tabor, called it a "huge win for religious lib-
erty."
"The court has unanimously confirmed the right of
churches to select their own ministers and religious
leaders," he said.
But since this was the first time the high court has
ever considered the "ministerial exception," it
would not set hard and fast rules on who can be
considered a religious employee of a religious or-
ganization, Roberts said.

"We are reluctant ... to adopt a rigid formula for de-
ciding when an employee qualifies as a minister," he
said. "It is enough for us to conclude, in this, our first
case involving the ministerial exception, that the ex-
ception covers Perich, given all the circumstances of
her employment."
Perich was promoted from a temporary lay teacher
to a "called" teacher in 2000 by a vote of the
church's congregation and was hired as a commis-
sioned minister. She taught secular classes as well as
a religious class four days a week. She also occasion-
ally led chapel service.
She got sick in 2004 but tried to return to work from
disability leave despite being diagnosed with narco-
lepsy. The school said she couldn't return because
they had hired a substitute for that year. They fired
her and removed her from the church ministry after
she showed up at the school and threatened to sue
to get her job back.
Perich complained to the EEOC, which sued the
church for violations of the disabilities act.
A federal judge threw out the lawsuit on grounds
that Perich fell under the ADA's ministerial excep-
tion, which keeps the government from interfering
with church affairs. But the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals reinstated her lawsuit, saying Perich's
"primary function was teaching secular subjects" so
the ministerial exception didn't apply.
The federal appeals court's reasoning was wrong,
Roberts said. He said that Perich had been ordained
as a minister and the lower court put too much
weight on the fact that regular teachers also per-
formed the same religious duties as she did.
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also placed too
much emphasis on the fact that Perich's religious du-
ties only took up 45 minutes of her workday, while
secular duties consumed the rest, Roberts said.
The issue before us ... is not one that can be re-
solved by a stopwatch," he said.
The court's decision was a narrow one, with Rob-
erts refusing to extend the ministerial exception to
other types of lawsuits that religious employees
might bring against their employers. "We express
no view on whether the exception bars other
types of suits, including actions by employees al-
leging breach of contract or tortious conduct by
their religious employers," Roberts said.
Justice Samuel Alito, who wrote a separate opin-
ion, argued that the exception should be tailored
for only an employee "who leads a religious organ-
ization, conducts worship services or important
religious ceremonies or rituals or serves as a mes-
senger or teacher of its faith."
But "while a purely secular teacher would not
qualify for the 'ministerial exception,' the constitu-
tional protection of religious teachers is not some-
how diminished when they take on secular func-
tions in addition to their religious ones," Alito said.

S ecularists and Socialists have been try-
ing to kill Christianity since the turn of
the century.
Friedrich Wilheim Nietzsche a German
philosopher from the 19th century coined the
phrase, “the death of God”. Not that Nietzsche
believed in an actual God who first existed and
then died in a literal sense. It was just Nie-
tzsche’s way of saying that the conventional
Christian God is no longer a viable source of any
absolute moral principles. “When one gives up
the Christian faith,
one pulls the right to Christian morality out from under
one’s feet.” By breaking one main concept out of Christi-
anity, the faith in God, one breaks the whole. . .” Nie-
tzsche also started a campaign against the establishment
of moral systems based on what he called a “dichotomy
of good and evil“, a “calamitous error.” He wanted to ini-
tiate a re-evaluation of the values of the Judeo-Christian
world.
Prior to WWI, the social movement was the religious
wing of the progressive [socialist] movement. The social
gospel, a Protestant Christian intellectual movement,
preached by liberals such as Walter Rauschenbush and
Washington Gladden, attempted to apply Christian eth-
ics to social problems such as injustice and inequality.
Today, this movement is still influential in many mainline
Protestant denominations such as the Evangelical Luther-
an, the Presbyterian, the United Church of Christ, the Dis-
ciples of Christ, the Episcopal, and the United Methodist
Churches.
Liberals saw the social gospel as a niche for their form of
Christianity. They felt it was their obligation to stand up
for those with no voice and provide for those who could
not, or would not, help themselves. An admirable trait
for Christians! Unfortunately, much as today, the pur-
veyors of the social gospel put emphasis on God’s King-
dom on earth and as such believed that they had the re-
sponsibility to transform society. While they believed
that individual salvation was important, it became sec-
ondary to social reform where the Church and the gov-
ernment, rather than God, would bring society to salva-
tion. They justified their ideology by distorting Biblical
texts to convince the masses that Christ taught socialism.
The social gospel stands hand-in-hand with the collective
salvation movement that is taught in many Churches to-
day – new age, globalism, collectivism, it takes a Village,
God’s Kingdom on earth, etc. Collective salvation is a
quasi-contract religious concept, a mandate of social jus-
tice projecting rights not normally given through the laws
of our nation. It is based on man’s doctrine, not biblical
doctrine. Although they may claim Christ as the basis of
their beliefs, they believe there are many other paths to

salvation and stress that only through the collective ac-
tion of society becoming one in equality and by overturn-
ing the past sins of society and the pillages of the envi-
ronment, can true salvation be attained.
A Time Magazine cover in 1996, asked the rhetorical
question, “Is God Dead Yet?” Unfortunately, in many
churches, he is. God has been replaced with the doctrine
of Marxism.
People of the “me generation” tend to gravitate towards
groups in society where the numbers are the largest –
man likes to hang out with the popular crowd! Church-
es have become nothing more than social clubs where
the “theology of the day” is taught.
There is no justification to think that the socialist agenda
taught by many mainline denominations and espoused by
the likes of Hillary Clinton, Obama, and numerous other
progressive Democrats and Republicans is Christianity.
Even Friedrich Engels, co-author of “The Communist
Manifesto,” said “. . .if some few passages of the Bible
may be favorable to Communism, the general spirit of it’s
doctrines is, nevertheless, totally opposed to it. . .”
Marxism pushes the doctrine of victimization and once
you see yourself as a victim, you have opened yourself to
socialism and greed. Marx built his philosophy on the
initial premise that God was “a human delusion” and that
Christianity was nothing more than an “opiate of the
masses.”
Progressive and social gospel leaders insist that socialism
is the most caring system ever conceived, an antidote to
poverty and the only true foundation for an equitable
society. But, if you place socialist ideology next to the
Word of God, socialism loses. Nowhere in the Bible does
God command the government to take money from its
citizens and redistribute it to the people. God gives us
three ways to take care of the poor and needy – through
the family, through the Church, and through charity. The
American welfare state is anti-Christian and unbiblical.
God condemns the politics of envy and greed and extols
the virtues of hard work and capitalism.
David Brooks, a New York Times columnists
wrote that “many religious doctrines are rigid
and out of touch. But religion itself can do enor-
mous good as long as people take religious
teaching metaphorically and not literally; as long
as people understand that all religions ultimately
preach love and service underneath their super-
ficial particulars; as long as people practice their
faiths open-mindedly and are tolerant of differ-
ent beliefs.”
Brooks was right, at least where it concerned
the mainline Protestant aspiration – to be seen
as serving without the taint of theological judg-
ment. But then he had another thought. “The
religions that thrive have communal theologies,
doctrines and codes of conduct rooted in claims
of absolute truth, that allow people to build their
character. Regular acts of discipline can lay the
foundation for extraordinary acts of self-control
when it counts the most.”
What Kelley and Brooks both discovered was
that in the end, socialism based religion can not
deal with the most important question of all -
the truth, a Biblical commitment to hold fast to
the truth rooted firmly in the Word of God.
The National Council of Churches commissioned
researcher Dean M. Kelley in the early 1970′s to
find out why liberal churches were in decline.
According to Kelley, “amid the current neglect
and hostility toward organized religion in general
the conservative churches, holding to seemingly
outmoded theology and making strict demands
on their members, have equaled or surpassed in
growth the early percentage increases of the na-
tion’s population.”

Speaking for mainline Protestantism Kelly assumed
that churches “if they ever wanted to succeed will
be reasonable, rational, courteous, responsible, re-
strained, and receptive to outside criticism“ and
would be highly concerned with “preserving a good
image in the world”, meaning within the world of
the cultural elites. He also noted that these church-
es would tend to be cooperative with other religious
groups to meet common goals and thus “will not let
dogmatism, judgmental moralism, or obsessions
with cultic purity stand in the way of such coopera-
tion and service.” Kelley then surmised that “these
expectations are a recipe for the failure of the reli-
gious enterprise, and arise from a mistaken view of
what success in religion is and how it should be fos-
tered and measured.”
Those churches that were growing, according to Kel-
ley, were those conservative churches with “strong”
religious movements that made demands on their
members in terms of belief and behavior, churches
that adhered to defined doctrines that were taught,
received, and believed, without compromise. Liberal
churches are opposed to these very principles. They
lowerd doctrinal and behavioral requirements and
made membership more a matter of personal prefer-
ence than of conviction.
David Brooks, a New York Times columnists wrote
that “many religious doctrines are rigid and out of
touch. But religion itself can do enormous good as
long as people take religious teaching metaphorically
and not literally; as long as people understand that all
religions ultimately preach love and service under-
neath their superficial particulars; as long as people
practice their faiths open-mindedly and are tolerant
of different beliefs.”
Brooks was right, at least where it concerned the
mainline Protestant aspiration – to be seen as serving
without the taint of theological judgment. But then
he had another thought.
“The religions that thrive have communal theologies,
doctrines and codes of conduct rooted in claims of ab-
solute truth, that allow people to build their character.
Regular acts of discipline can lay the foundation for ex-
traordinary acts of self-control when it counts the
most.”
What Kelley and Brooks both discovered was that in
the end, socialism based religion can not deal with the
most important question of all - the truth, a Biblical
commitment to hold fast to the truth rooted firmly in
the Word of God.
Church Agrees to Host Anti-
Sharia Conference After
Hotel Cancels
by Billy Hallowell
A Madison, Tennessee, house of worship
has agreed to be the site of an anti-
Shariah conference on November 11.
Cornerstone Church agreed to host the initiative
after a Nashville hotel terminated its contract to be
the conference facility for the Shariah Awareness Ac-
tion Network’s controversial event.
According to the Christian Post, Pastor Maury Davis
says that the church agreed to rent the space to the
group, because the event will serve as an educational
experience. Davis also says that he knows some of
the speakers and that they are “very reputable peo-
ple.”
“I don’t believe informative speech or educational
speech is hate speech,” he said. “I want to know
what is Sharia law, how did it come about, what does
it mean and how is it implemented – just as a citizen

ence, it will provide information about Shariah
Law and its incompatibility with U.S. Constitution-
al law.
Additionally, the conference will address the
potential dangers that Shariah law poses to the
American lifestyle.
“Conference has moved … The Hutton Hotel
refuses to honor its contract because they want
to be “sensitive” to Islamists and Jihadists who
have threatened their property,” reads a state-
ment on the group’s registration site. “A new
conference the same day at a greatly reduced
price of just $20.00 will be held at the Corner-

Saudi royal offers $900,000
reward for capture of Israeli
soldiers
By DPA
RIYADH - A Saudi royal offered a $900,000 re-
ward to anyone who captures an Israeli soldier,
on Saturday. Prince Khaled bin Talal, the broth-
er of business tycoon and Fox News co-owner
Walid bin Talal, told the Saudi-based broadcast-
er Al Daleel that the captive would then be re-
leased in exchange for Arabs held in Israeli pris-
ons. Khaled's offer comes days after the promi-
nent Saudi cleric, Awad al-Qarni, put $100,000
on the head of every Israeli soldier.
Al-Qarni's statement - posted on Facebook -
was severely criticized, and messages posted
online even warned of death threats.
Khaled told the broadcaster: "My offer also
comes in response to the threats made against
Sheikh al-Qarni."
The Saudi offers follows the recent deal between the
Israeli government and Hamas, when Israel agreed to
release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for
Gilad Shalit.

T he gang was reportedly convicted of smuggling
various items seized during the operation, in-
cluding the Bible, and all the artifacts were kept
in a safe at an Ankara courthouse. The Bible, which was re-
portedly kept at the courthouse for years, was only recently
handed over to the care of the Ankara Ethnography Muse-
um.
Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay said on Thurs-
day that the ministry has received a copy of Bible from the
Ankara courthouse which dates back to 1,500 years ago and
is thought to have been written in Aramaic, the language of
Jesus. He said the Bible needs restoration and it will be
opened to public display after this.
The Turkish media reports also said on Thursday that the
Vatican has requested that Turkey allow it to examine the
1,500-year-old Bible; however, the Vatican Embassy in An-
kara denied the reports on Thursday suggesting that the
Vatican had asked Turkey to examine the copy of Bible in
Ankara.
The leather-bound Bible, which is said to be worth TL 40
million, was written on leather sheets and is now under pro-
tection as it is regarded as a valuable cultural asset. Even a
Xerox copy of pages from the book is reported to be worth
as much as TL 3-4 million.
Some media reports also said the copy of Bible in Ankara
may be a copy of the much-debated Gospel of Barnabas,
which Muslims claim is an original gospel that was later sup-
pressed; the oldest copies of this gospel date back to the
16th century and are written in Italian and Spanish. Howev-
er, the Gospel of Barnabas is not included in the four gos-
pels that currently comprise the canonical New Testament -
- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The Gospel of Barnabas contradicts the canonical
New Testament account of Jesus and his ministry
but has strong parallels with the Islamic view of
Jesus. Much of its content and themes parallel Is-
lamic ideas, and it includes a prediction by Jesus of
the Prophet Muhammad coming to earth.
Ömer Faruk Harman, a theology professor, said
scientific examinations may reveal whether the
Bible in Ankara is the Gospel of Barnabas, which
he said complies with the messages in Muslim ho-
ly book of Quran and is believed by Muslims to be
the most original copy of Bible.
He said in line with Islamic belief, the Gospel of
Barnabas treats Jesus as a human being and
prophet not a God, rejects trinity and crucifixion of
Jesus and includes a prediction about Prophet Mu-
hammad’s coming to Earth. About the prospects
of whether the Bible could be the Gospel of Barna-
bas, İhsan Özbek, a Protestant pastor, said this is
unlikely because St. Barnabas lived in the first cen-
tury and was one of the Apostles of Jesus, but the
Bible in Ankara is said to be from the fifth or the
sixth century.
The copy in Ankara might have been written by
one of the followers of St. Barbanas and since
there is around 500 years in between St. Barnabas
and the writing of the Bible copy [in Ankara], Mus-
lims may be disappointed to see that this copy
does not include things they would like to see and
it might have no relation with the content of the
Gospel of Barnabas,” said Özbek.
Aydoğan Vatandaş, a Today’s Zaman journalist and
author who has written two books on the Gospel
of Barnabas, said there is no clue that the Bible
mentioned in the Turkish press dates back to
1,500 years ago, but he said it is sure that the Gos-
pel of Barnabas had been written in the Aramaic
language and Syriac alphabet.
There is only one Gospel that exactly matches
this definition: the ‘Gospel of Barnabas’ that
was found in a cave in Uludere in Hakkari [now
of Şırnak] in the early 1980s by villagers, which I
told the story of first as a screenplay in 2005 for
a film project, then in my novel in 2007, ‘
The Secret of Gospel of Barnabas’ and my in-
vestigative journalism book, ‘Apokrifal’ in
2008.”
As a result of his research, Vatandaş said he
found that this Gospel was actually preserved
by the Special Armed Forces intelligence unit in
the 1990s and that some parts of this Gospel
were translated by an Aramaic language expert
Dr. Hamza Hocagil under the control of the in-
telligence unit. He said Dr. Hocagil was asked to
stop translating it by the Special Armed Forces
when it turned out that he had shared sensitive
information with journalists at the time.
“Since then we did not know where this Gospel
was. After my book about the entire story of
this Gospel and the criminal incidents sur-
rounding it, the public’s interest and curiosity
has increased and the Turkish military has been
the target of several questions about the case.
Therefore, I believe that the emergence of this
Gospel again is very timely,” he said. Vatandaş
also claimed that three other copies of this
Gospel written by St. Barnabas are hidden in
different locations in the region, so the Gospel
in Ankara might be one of these as well.
Seems this stuff comes up every week, but this
picture is apparently that of an alleged 1500
year old Bible that is now being kept in Ankara.
The story is that Turkish police seized it in an
anti-smuggling operation in 2000. It is only now
coming to light because the Vatican is asking
for it. It apparently contains the Gospel of

Barnabas, which scholars almost unanimously date
to the 16th century as a late pseudo-gospel that
was written to give the impression that it was the
work of Barnabas. Why is this gospel so potentially
valuable to Turkey? It contains within it some mate-
rial that seems to predict the coming of Moham-
med, and generally follows the standard Muslim
account of early Christianity. So if Turkey can prove
it is from 500 AD it obviously scores a huge point
since Mohammed doesn’t come until the end of
that century, and thus the book would clearly be a
prophecy about his coming. Lots at stake then, and
no surprise the Turkish authorities are not so readily
handing it over to the Vatican and are instead keep-
ing it under military control.
I just spoke with my colleague about this, and after
both of us have had the chance to look at it we con-
cur it is impossible this is a 1500 year old Bible.
What could be really funny is that at the bottom it
appears to read something like 1500 AD. It is ad-
mittedly tough to read, but it would quite a mistake
to claim it is 1500 years old when it was produced in
1500. This date would also conform to what most
scholarship believes anyway, that this gospel was
produced around this time.
Please do chime in if you have a better read on this,
but I think this is another phony.

Ayan Hirsi Ali:The Global
War on Christians in the
Muslim World
From one end of the muslim world
to the other, Christians are being
murdered for their faith.
W e hear so
often about Muslims as
victims of abuse in the
West and combatants in
the Arab Spring’s fight
against tyranny. But, in
fact, a wholly different
kind of war is under-
way—an unrecognized
battle costing thousands of
lives. Christians are being
killed in the Islamic world
because of their religion. It is
a rising genocide that ought
to provoke global alarm.
The portrayal of Muslims as
victims or heroes is at best
partially accurate. In recent
years the violent oppression
of Christian minorities has
become the norm in Muslim
-majority nations stretching
from West Africa and the
Middle East to South
Asia and Oceania. In some countries it is govern-
ments and their agents that have burned churches
and imprisoned parishioners. In others, rebel groups
and vigilantes have taken matters into their own
hands, murdering Christians and driving them from
regions where their roots go back centuries.
The media’s reticence on the subject no doubt has
several sources. One may be fear of provoking addi-
tional violence. Another is most likely the influence
of lobbying groups such as the Organization of Is-
lamic Cooperation—a kind of United Nations of Is-
lam centered in Saudi Arabia—and the Council on
American-Islamic Relations. Over the past decade,
these and similar groups have been remarkably suc-
cessful in persuading leading public figures and jour-
nalists in the West to think of each and every exam-
ple of perceived anti-Muslim discrimination as an
expression of a systematic and sinister derangement
called “Islamophobia”—a term that is meant to elicit
the same moral disapproval as xenophobia or homo-
phobia.

But a fair-minded assessment of recent events and
trends leads to the conclusion that the scale and se-
verity of Islam phobia pales in comparison with the
bloody Christo phobia currently coursing through
Muslim-majority nations from one end of the globe to
the other. The conspiracy of silence surrounding this
violent expression of religious intolerance has to stop.
Nothing less than the fate of Christianity—and ulti-
mately of all religious minorities—in the Islamic world
is at stake.
At least 24 Coptic Christians were killed in Cairo dur-
ing clashes with the Egyptian Army on Oct. 9., Thomas

From blasphemy laws to brutal murders to bombings
to mutilations and the burning of holy sites, Christians
in so many nations live in fear. In Nigeria many have
suffered all of these forms of persecution. The nation
has the largest Christian minority (40 percent) in pro-
portion to its population (160 million) of any majority-
Muslim country. For years, Muslims and Christians in
Nigeria have lived on the edge of civil war. Islamist
radicals provoke much if not most of the tension. The
newest such organization is an outfit that calls itself
Boko Haram, which means “Western education is sac-
rilege.” Its aim is to establish Sharia in Nigeria. To this
end it has stated that it will kill all Christians in the
country.
In the month of January 2012 alone, Boko Haram was
responsible for 54 deaths. In 2011 its members killed
at least 510 people and burned down or destroyed
more than 350 churches in 10 northern states. They
use guns, gasoline bombs, and even machetes,
shouting “Allahu akbar” (“God is great”) while launch-
ing attacks on unsuspecting citizens. They have
attacked churches, a Christmas Day gathering (killing
42 Catholics), beer parlors, a town hall, beauty salons,
and banks. They have so far focused on killing Chris-
tian clerics, politicians, students, policemen, and
soldiers, as well as Muslim clerics who condemn
their mayhem. While they started out by using
crude methods like hit-and-run assassinations from
the back of motorbikes in 2009, the latest AP re-
ports indicate that the group’s recent attacks show
a new level of potency and sophistication.
The Christo phobia that has plagued Sudan for
years takes a very different form. The authoritarian
government of the Sunni Muslim north of the
country has for decades tormented Christian and
animist minorities in the south. What has often
been described as a civil war is in practice the Su-
danese government’s sustained persecution of reli-
gious minorities. This persecution culminated in
the infamous genocide in Darfur that began in
2003. Even though Sudan’s Muslim president,
Omar al-Bashir, has been indicted by the Interna-
tional Criminal Court in The Hague, which charged
him with three counts of genocide, and despite the
euphoria that greeted the semi-independence he
grant-ed to South Sudan in July of last year, the
violence has not ended. In South Kordofan, Chris-
tians are still subject-ed to aerial bombardment,
targeted killings, the kidnap-ping of children, and
other atrocities. Reports from the United Nations
indicate that between 53,000 and 75,000 innocent
civilians have been displaced from their residences
and that houses and buildings have been looted
and destroyed.
News

Both kinds of persecution—undertaken by extragovern-
mental groups as well as by agents of the state—have
come together in Egypt in the aftermath of the Arab
Spring. On Oct. 9 of last year in the Maspero area of Cai-
ro, Coptic Christians (who make up roughly 11 percent of
Egypt’s population of 81 million) marched in protest
against a wave of attacks by Islamists—including church
burnings, rapes, mutilations, and murders—that followed
the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak’s dictatorship. During
the protest, Egyptian security forces drove their trucks
into the crowd and fired on protesters, crushing and kill-
ing at least 24 and wounding more than 300 people. By
the end of the year more than 200,000 Copts had fled
their homes in anticipation of more attacks. With Islam-
ists poised to gain much greater power in the wake of
recent elections, their fears appear to be justified.
Egypt is not the only Arab country that seems bent on
wiping out its Christian minority. Since 2003 more than
900 Iraqi Christians (most of them Assyrians) have been
killed by terrorist violence in Baghdad alone, and 70
churches have been burned, according to the Assyrian
International News Agency (AINA). Thousands of Iraqi
Christians have fled as a result of violence directed spe-
cifically at them, reducing the number of Christians in the
country to fewer than half a million from just over a mil-
lion before 2003. AINA understandably describes this as
an “incipient genocide or ethnic cleansing of Assyrians in
Iraq.”
The 2.8 million Christians who live in Pakistan make up only about 1.6 percent of the population of more than 170 million. As members of such a tiny minority, they live in perpetual fear not only of Islamist terrorists but also of Pakistan’s draconian blasphemy laws. There is, for exam-ple, the notorious case of a Christian woman who was sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad. When international pressure persuaded Punjab Gov. Salman Taseer to explore ways of freeing her, he was killed by his bodyguard. The bodyguard was then celebrated by prominent Muslim clerics as a hero—and though he was sentenced to death late last year,
the judge who imposed the sentence now lives in
hiding, fearing for his life.
Such cases are not unusual in Pakistan. The na-
tion’s blasphemy laws are routinely used by crim-
inals and intolerant Pakistani Muslims to bully
religious minorities. Simply to declare belief in
the Christian Trinity is considered blasphemous,
since it contradicts mainstream Muslim theologi-
cal doctrines. When a Christian group is suspect-
ed of transgressing the blasphemy laws, the con-
sequences can be brutal. Just ask the members of
the Christian aid group World Vision. Its offices
were attacked in the spring of 2010 by 10 gun-
men armed with grenades, leaving six people
dead and four wounded. A militant Muslim group
claimed responsibility for the attack on the
grounds that World Vision was working to sub-
vert Islam. (In fact, it was helping the survivors of
a major earthquake.)
At least 13 people were killed and 140 injured on
March 8, 2011, when participants in a large Chris-
tian demonstration in a Cairo slum were attacked
by residents of a surrounding neighborhood.,
Mohamed Omar / EPA-Landov
Not even Indonesia—often touted as the world’s
most tolerant, democratic, and modern majority-
Muslim nation—has been immune to the fevers
of Christophobia. According to data compiled by
the Christian Post, the number of violent inci-
dents committed against religious minorities (and
at 7 percent of the population, Christians are the
country’s largest minority) increased by nearly 40
percent, from 198 to 276, between 2010 and
2011.
The litany of suffering could be extended. In Iran
dozens of Christians have been arrested and
jailed for daring to worship outside of the official-
ly sanctioned church system. Saudi Arabia, mean-
while, deserves to be placed in a category of its
News

own. Despite the fact that more than a million Chris-
tians live in the country as foreign workers, churches
and even private acts of Christian prayer are banned;
to enforce these totalitarian restrictions, the religious
police regularly raid the homes of Christians and
bring them up on charges of blasphemy in courts
where their testimony carries less legal weight than a
Muslim’s. Even in Ethiopia, where Christians make up
a majority of the population, church burnings by
members of the Muslim minority have become a
problem.
It should be clear from this catalog of atrocities that
anti-Christian violence is a major and underreported
problem. No, the violence isn’t centrally planned or
coordinated by some international Islamist agency. In
that sense the global war on Christians isn’t a tradi-
tional war at all. It is, rather, a spontaneous expres-
sion of anti-Christian animus by Muslims that trans-
cends cultures, regions, and ethnicities.
As Nina Shea, director of the Hudson Institute’s Cen-
ter for Religious Freedom, pointed out in an interview
with Newsweek, Christian minorities in many majori-
ty-Muslim nations have “lost the protection of their
societies.” This is especially so in countries with grow-
ing radical Islamist (Salafist) movements. In those na-
tions, vigilantes often feel they can act with impuni-
ty—and government inaction often proves them
right. The old idea of the Ottoman Turks—that non-
Muslims in Muslim societies deserve protection
(albeit as second-class citizens)—has all but vanished
from wide swaths of the Islamic world, and increas-
ingly the result is bloodshed and oppression.
So let us please get our priorities straight. Yes, West-
ern governments should protect Muslim minorities
from intolerance. And of course we should ensure
that they can worship, live, and work freely and with-
out fear. It is the protection of the freedom of con-
science and speech that distinguishes free societies
from unfree ones. But we also need to keep perspec-
tive about the scale and severity of intolerance.
Cartoons, films, and writings are one thing; knives,
guns, and grenades are something else entirely. As
for what the West can do to help religious minori-
ties in Muslim-majority societies, my answer is
that it needs to begin using the billions of dollars
in aid it gives to the offending countries as lever-
age. Then there is trade and investment. Besides
diplomatic pressure, these aid and trade relation-
ships can and should be made conditional on the
protection of the freedom of conscience and wor-
ship for all citizens.
Instead of falling for overblown tales of Western
Islamophobia, let’s take a real stand against the
Christophobia infecting the Muslim world. Toler-
ance is for everyone—except the intolerant.
“It cannot be emphasized too
strongly or too often that this great
nation was founded, not by reli-
gionists, but by Christians; not on
religions, but on the gospel of Jesus
Christ. For this very reason peoples
of other faiths have been afforded
asylum, prosperity, and freedom of
worship here."

Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and
with all your soul and
with all your strength and with all your mind.
Luke 10:27
T he command to love God with all our heart,
soul, strength and mind is the greatest com-
mandment. It is part of the Shema, the pray-
er that Jesus and all Jews since have prayed
morning and evening to commit themselves to follow
the Lord. When we think about those words, we tend to
pass by the phrase "heart and soul" quickly, probably
thinking that it means that we should love God with our
spirit and emotions, and very passionately.
Our understanding can be enriched by understanding
the word “soul” (nephesh) better. Nephesh means “life”
as well as “soul.” So the Jewish interpretation of "love
the Lord with all your soul" is actually that we should
love God with all of our lives — every moment through-
out our lives. Loving God with all our nephesh, “life,” is
the opposite of being a one-hour-a-week Christian
whose thoughts are largely filled with distractions of
work, politics, hobbies, investments, sporting events,
and entertainment, as many of us are today. While all
those things are good, squeezing God in as an after-
thought is exactly the opposite of this phrase of the She-
ma.
A further tradi-
tional interpreta-
tion of “with all
your nephesh” is the idea that we should love God
even to the point of sacrificing our lives for him. If
Jews are able, they will quote the Shema at their
death to make a final commitment to their God. In
fact, there is a powerful story told to illustrate that
idea. Rabbi Akiva, a greatly respected Jewish rabbi
who lived in the first century AD, was tortured to
death publicly by the Romans because he refused
to give up teaching and studying the Scriptures. It
was the time of saying the morning Shema, and
during his torture, his students heard him reciting
the Shema instead of crying out in pain. His stu-
dents called out to him, "Teacher, even now?" The
dying rabbi said, "All my life I have wondered
about the phrase that says 'Love the Lord your
God with all of your soul,’ wondering if I would
ever have the privilege of doing this. Now that the
chance has come to me, shall I not grasp it with
joy?" He repeated the first verse of the Shema,
"Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord
alone," until his soul left him.
This is what Jesus was calling us to, and what he
did himself: He loved the Lord - and you and me -
with all of his life, until he breathed his last.
