Part 1. Naming the ABCs

I.. Name and proper pronunciation of the ABCs by (Lesson a Proper Printing and a1 Alphabet)

A. Students should be taught to memorize the each letter in the alphabet, with the help of the

Hebrew written underneath

1. Students should be taught to read the name of each letter, saying "big + letter" and then the "small + letter".

2. Repeat the exercises by saying the ABCs song and pointing at the letter

III.. Special attention should be paid at each stage to correct pronunciation

A. The teacher should demonstrate how one uses articulators to pronounce different sounds





1. The letter W should not be taught as "double u" because it leads to errors in reading a

W as an U. There is no L sound in the name of the letter W. The sound of W is said by

tensing the lips as though to whistle and then letting air out by opening the mouth

2. The letter "Z" should not be taught as "zed," but "zee" because the "d" sound is not heard when reading words in which the letter "d" appears

3. "Q" is always followed by "u" as the sound has it origin in a foreign language

4. The student should be taught that "X" almost never starts any words

I.. English originated as a spoken language since most people never learned to read or write

A. English kept many words that originated from other languages

1. The way words are spelled differently made English a unique language

2. English also has a grammar structure based on small changes from other languages

3. It is because of all these changes that English is often confusing

B. In Hebrew, root letters retain their original meaning: seifer (book), seifriah (library), etc.

1. In English there are no root letters, only the way words are said is important

2. Letters used in words do not always sound like the languages from which they were taken

3. The English language imitates guttural sounds by using the letter "CH."

3. The vowels each have a long (tense) and short (relaxed) sounds, and "A" has three sounds.

D. Letter "E" at the end of a word it is called a "Silent e" (Lesson b8 Silent E exercises)

1. When "Silent E" is added to the word (or syllable) the first vowel becomes longer

b. The "letter E" will not be heard

2. This is also true when two syllables are pronounced as one sound: (bait, eat, tie, oat, duel)

3. The " Silent E" in French or Spanish is pronounced, but not in English

A. Besides the long (tense) and short (relaxed) sounds, the "A" has a middle sound

1. When "A" appears between consonants with no other vowels in the syllable

2. The middle "A" is said like the aleph, with three dots, in Hebrew: Fat cat and a hat.

3. Examples may be studied and perfected (Lesson: b8 Silent E exercises)

3. Exceptions are found when the "E" comes before "I" (height, and seize)

A. The 21 consonants are matched, one by one with each of the five vowels in the top row

1. Say the name of the first consonant ("L") in the column numbered from 1 to 21

2. Write the letter in the slot under the first vowel a. Then add the first vowel (I) next to the consonant.

b. Say the name of the each letter, as you add it and say them together

c. Examples: L–i = Li; L–a = Lay; L-e = Lee, etc. 3. This is done with each consonant and each vowel

4. This should be done with the long vowel, (middle "A"), and the short sounding vowel

I . A spoken language requires a system of using breath from the lungs to create our voice.

A. Sounds are made by using articulators (tongue, larynx, palate, jaw, teeth and lips)

1. The voice begins by vibrating over the vocal chords,

a. When they are tensed, the voice will be high pitch,

b. When they are relaxed, the voice will be a low pitch.

2. As the breath goes through the mouth, we use our tongue to direct it.

3. As it passes out of the mouth, we use our teeth, and lips to make specific sounds.

II . All language uses a system of letters to form words

I. A written language enables us to transmit thoughts over large distances or periods of time

Phonetic symbols used as vowels

Acquiring a language means knowing how letters combine into words. The same sounds can

be made by every human, the only difference being his particular locality. The range of global

sounds is codified into an alphabet called the International Phonetic Alphabet.

I. In the chart below, the consonants sounds are listed according to their phonetic symbols

A. The columns are divided into the basic areas of the mouth

1. are labial- lips, teeth;

2. alveolar- tip or blade of tongue against the gum just behind the upper teeth;

3. palatal- hard palate, tongue body;

4. velar/ uvular- raised back of tongue against palate

B. The rows are divided into the categories of how the air is forced through the mouth cavity

1. Plosive, Nasal, Trill, and Fricative
