ABOUT ESSI

The European Small States Institute (ESSI) has been formed in the Principality of Monaco to advance research on the issues that concern the small states of Europe and thus to realize the potential in the European small state contribution.

”Small States can lay claim to some notable achieve-ments while managing to preserve ethnic uniqueness under a unifying national identity.”

WELCOME

Based in the Principality of Monaco, the Institute for the European Small States Institute was established with a mission to facilita-te cooperation between entities that focus on the small states of Europe.

To fulfill its mission, ESSI aims to forge mutually beneficial, collaborative links between European small states to develop and promote advanced re-search in the subject area, and to make this knowled-ge generally accessible to interested parties. In doing so, ESSI champi-ons the values of engaged and committed dissemina-tion of knowledge, wisely applied scholarship, and an insistence on excellen-ce.

ESSI integrates interests in three areas – applied ma-nagement and corporate development, government

and public policy, and cultural affairs – by utili-zing European small state examples to extrapolate to related settings. Mona-co’s multiculturalism and exceptional location make it a perfect site for this activity; the Principality remains a place in which democracy in all its forms, social responsibility, and aspirations for a peaceful world continue to flourish.

Many other European small states are commit-ted to the same ideals as they build capacity in their government and private sectors. ESSI is proud to act as the link between these dynamic countries as they strive to inspire others and enhance their global presence.

VISION

The European Small States Institute will become a point of reference for productive collaborati-ons among research entities that focus on the small states of Europe, and will provide general access to this knowledge for interested parties.

”Out of necessity, microcosms nurture fertile imaginations that are able to visualize countless possibilities for the future.”

REALIZING THE POTENTIAL

ESSI will achieve these aims by producing a dynamic, innovative prototype for intellectual activity based on a symbiotic relationship among appropriate institu-

tions. This rapport will be exemplified in fiscal and administrative stability while maintaining the highest academic standards, values, and culture with an overar-

ching emphasis on sustainable development.

To embody and amplify an expansive and inclusive world view by realizing the potential in the European small state contribution.

The modern small state: A responsible and vibrant environment conducive to economic growth and social development.

A WORLD WITHIN AWORLD

Small states have consistently provided models for others to follow; out of necessity, microcosms nurture fertile imaginations that are able to visu-alize countless possibilities for the future. These frameworks are often based on creating “a world within a world” to make small countries attracti-ve to investors, entrepreneurs, visitors, and the international community.

THE MONEGASQUE EXAMPLE

The success of the Monegasque Example is based not only on the Principality’s openness to the world but on the way it has cherished freedom of thought and speech, demonstrated a commitment to and respon-sibility for one’s compatriots – known and unknown, exhibited a respect for differences and a willingness to embrace the unfamiliar, and displayed a profound desire for peace.

The Principality of Monaco has long exemplified how living in a small country with a small population need not inhibit people’s capacity to achieve
