Who would be the audience for your

media product?

Emily Grannon

Economic Factors My magazine is aimed towards students who will

possibly have a part time job or who receives an

allowance from their parents therefore they might

not have that much to spend on my magazine so

I have priced my magazine at £2.50 which is

much cheaper than other music magazines on

the market which average to around £3 - £4

which I find quite expensive. Also, another

economic factor is that I have advertised free

concert ticket, so my reader might not be able to

afford tickets so they could be cateorgrised into

group c1 - c2

Gender My main aim was for my magazine to

appeal to females as I feel there is a wider range in the pop

industry for females rather than males so I could experiment

and explore more ideas to attract female readers. This was

with colours, my model, fonts, it made the production easier.

The colours I did chose was purple, white and black. I

decided not to chose the typical pink as I felt like I wanted a

more edgier look and to appel to a more mature

teenager/young adult reader. White was frequently used

colour in Billboard and NME so I chose white as it seemed to

‘work’ for the professional magazines. Unlike NME (which

attracts both male and female readers) I decided to take more

inspiration from Billboard which could be the reson why my

magazine leans more towards females. Also to appeal to my

female based audience I made my model pose in a non-

sexual manner and made her convey a more friendly an

likeable state so that the audience wouldn't become offended

or even intimidated.

Age

The chosen age range for my magazine is between 15-25 year old. I wanted to

play on the more youthful side to music which is already quite a common age

range for the pop genre as in this age its considered that they are up to date

with whats happening in the industry which helps with my magazine as I wanted

it to be my audience supply, meaning this is where they would find the new

upcoming artists and whats coming. I think that in this era the young set the

trends and ‘spread the word’ on whats new which is why I wanted to use this

age range. Also many artist that I have featured are close to this age like “The

Neighbourhood” who lead vocalist is 22 and both “Lana Del Rey” and “Lily

Allen” are 29. So my target audience could feel almost a connection like the

artist are there friends and someone they can relate to and for the younger side

to my audience they may see the artist as role models.

Ethnicity

The ethnicity for for my magazine isn't perspicific as I have included

different ethnicties in my magazine. My model is black british and the

artists are caucasian. Therefore I have tried to open my audience to a

broader range of ethnicities. I have chosen to do this as the pop genre

usually contains caucasian people, however it is beginning to evolve so

I wanted my magazine to do the same.

Text

What artist do

my audience

listen to?

The genre pop is very broad

therefore to narrow down who my

target audience listen to I have

decided to use artist who are in

both pop and indie genre. This

would be Lana Del Rey, Lily Allen

and The Neighbourhood. These

are the same artist who I have

incorporated onto my front cover as

well to emphasise how my genre

doesn't conform to just pop. Other

artist that this genre includes are

The Weeknd, No doubt and Mikky

Ekko.

The Pneumbra Effect

The penumbra effect is essentially an audience that isn't in your target

audience range. They are not expected to buy your music magazine.

When researching into the effect I found that a small percentage of

women over 50 buy the magazine Q. To put it into perspective for my

magazine it would be like 5% of my audience were over 50. This would be

a surprising statistic as you wouldn't expect the older generation to enjoy

the music and the artist and have such an interest that much that they

would buy my magazine.

Conclusion To conclude, evaluating my magazine

I think my social group was

represented well as I constantly

received feedback from focus groups

and made sure that they thought my

magazine linked with their

characteristics and lifestyles.

Therefore I think that the social group

was correct portrayed and so I would

think that they would buy my product.
