• Write a one sentence answer to the question that includes time and context and a reason
• Break down your answer into three sections –these will become your paragraphs
1. Answer the Question
• Briefly note content (ie where they might fit into your answer)
• Write brief critiques
• Highlight key phrases that you could quote
• Connect to other sources – same content; disagree etc
2. Read the sources
• Find at least two quotes for each section
• Look for sources that agree (this counts as one quote)
• Look for sources that disagree and decide which is more relevant (this counts as one quote)
• Include source critique - signposts
3. Assign source material
• Introduction: intro statement; TS1; TS2; TS3; hypothesis; introduce first paragraph
• Point 1: TS1; explain; evidence and critique; explain; evidence and critique; elaborate; link
• Point 2: TS2; explain; evidence and critique; explain; evidence and critique; elaborate; link
• Point 3: TS3; explain; evidence and critique; explain; evidence and critique; elaborate; link
• Conclusion: concluding statement; summarise argument; hypothesis
4. Write essay
Using sources
• DO
– Reference correctly (in brackets at the end of your quote, using complete source information as provided at the end of the source)
– Use a source to support every point
– Be critical of sources
• DON’T
– Refer to a source as ‘Source E’, always refer to the author
– Quote ONLY a secondary source to support your opinion –connect these to primary sources
