ACADEMIC INTENSIVE ENGLISH TOEFL, GMAT & GRE PROGRAMS, SERVICES & ACTIVITIES

The Academic Intensive English Program is designed to prepare non-native English speakers for university or graduate school in the United States.

• 20 hours per week of challenging, interactive instruction in writing, reading, listening, and speaking

• Choice of a daytime elective which complements the skill-based classes

ACADEMIC INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM

BARUCH COLLEGE, CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES

The Academic Intensive English Program is designed to help prepare non-native English

speakers for college or graduate school in the United States. There are 10 levels of

proficiency in the program, starting with complete beginners at Level 1 to the students ready

for a graduate degree program at Level 10. Students receive 20 hours per week of instruction

in writing, reading, listening and speaking. Additionally, students choose a daytime elective,

from a unique menu of courses including, grammar, TOEFL preparation, academic skills,

public speaking, pronunciation, business English, and more.

Upon arrival, students take the ESL Placement Test which determines their starting level. If

they meet the course requirements, students are promoted from one level to the next after

one semester. When they complete Level 10 and pass the CUNY Assessment Test, students

are awarded a Certificate from the Academic Intensive English Program. Academically

qualified students who pass at least level 8 and pass the CUNY Assessment Test are eligible to

be admitted to Baruch College Undergraduate Program without the TOEFL test score.

In addition to classes student can choose to attend after class activities:

On Mondays, students can come to interactive workshops on topics ranging from applying to

college and writing a resume to volunteering in New York City.

On Tuesdays, students can work one-on-one with tutors on any ESL skills they choose.

On Wednesdays, students meet with native speaker volunteers and practice English outside of

the classroom during the Conversation Hour.

On Fridays, students go on field trips around New York City led by the program staff.

Academic Intensive English Program students have access to the computer labs, the college

library, the college gym and swimming pool, as well as the Student Health Center located on

campus.
