ACADEMICS AND EXAMINATIONS The College’s Second Term Roll of Honour will be distributed with the final reports on Monday, 23 July 2012. Message to the Matrics Matrics, the time is closer than you think to start your new life outside of school. In the blink of an eye you will return after the July holidays, with only a few weeks of school, one Fairbairn College examination to write and then … the NCS examinations. At this time of your Matric year, it is all about choices and your reactions. The following questions must be answered: What am I going to do with my time before this year ends, before the final examinations? How am I going to make sure that this year will end in success? This is the last step to making the correct choices to ensure that you are not disappointed at the end of the year. Remember that absolutely everything you do, give, say or even think, is like a boomerang – it will come back to you. It is advisable to set aside enough time for studying during the holidays. Websites are made available where you can retrieve examination papers. Your teachers would have given you work for the holidays, which must be done. It is all in your hands – make the best of it! Good luck with the last lap! Mrs M Combrink GRADE HEAD: GRADE 12 PASTORAL AND DISCIPLINE Ladies’ Assembly The Ladies’ Assembly always starts with general topics. We address issues pertaining to appearance as well as behaviour which could be improved upon. After this, we move to a main theme. This year the BIG topic was the language sometimes used by our young ladies. We addressed the following: • Foul language. • What people think of ladies using foul language. • How it affects one’s life. • It is not “cool”. • Only has a negative impact. The ladies were asked to reprimand their friends who use foul language, so that they will always feel like, and be treated as ladies. Freedom Day On 27 April, South Africa celebrated Freedom Day. Fairbairn’s staff and learners were taken down memory lane when Nicolas Schultz and Nicole Bailey traced the path of the first South African democratic election. Mrs E le Grange OPERATION MANCO

School Discipline Discipline remains one of the cornerstones upon which the College is built. Although discipline is an ever increasingly difficult task, it is one from which we will not falter. I would like to highlight the following concerns: • Detentions: During the term a large number of learners were placed in Saturday morning detentions due to not attending their grade head detentions. A reminder to parents that there is a reply slip to be signed for grade head detention, and that this documentation is kept on the learner’s file. • School Bags: A number of the school bags have graffiti. This is not allowed. Such bags will be confiscated. Learners must ensure that their bags are kept neatly and are presentable at all times. • School Uniform: Many learners arrive at school with dirty blazers – these can be machine washed. Many of the blazers are missing buttons – these may be purchased at the bookroom. A reminder to all the boys that you are expected to wear a belt as part of your uniform. NB: Girls’ grey winter skirts must be purchased at Rothmans, the School’s official uniform stockists. Skirts obtained from other retail clothing stores do not comply with the uniform requirements. • Grooming: All boys are reminded that you are required to be cleanly shaven every day. Please consult your term planner for the dates of hair inspection. (Each term starts with a hair inspection on the 1st day). • Cell phones: Cell phones continue to be a problem. Cell phones must be off (not on silent or vibrate mode) during the entire academic school day. I ask for the co-operation of the learners and the assistance of the parents regarding these matters, and by so doing, keeping up the high standards that we have become accustomed to at the College. RCL Executive A big thank you to the RCL Executive for their tireless efforts in performing their duties on a daily basis. They form a vital cog in the discipline structure and their input is of immense value. Thank you also to the head and deputy head prefects for their leadership in this regard. Mr M Koffeman DEPUTY HEADMASTER Matric Dance and Fashion Show - 2012 The Matric Dance was held on Friday, 13 April. The theme of the evening was “Night of the Stars”. The Matrics rose to the occasion and dazzled us with their lovely dresses and smart suits. The Grade 11’s were an eager, hardworking group, who played a vital role in making the evening a success and ensuring that the Matrics felt like stars. Miss C Marais MATRIC DANCE CO-ORDINATOR The Matric Fashion Show of 2012 was a tremendous success. The men looked dashing in their suits and the ladies absolutely regal in their dresses. It was a show characterized

by class and elegance. The Grade 11 dancers were also a highlight. It truly was a night with the stars! Miss C van der Merwe FASHION SHOW CO-ORDINATOR We are proud of: Aidan de Jager – we take this opportunity of wishing Aidan success when participating in France during the July school holidays in the world Fly Fishing Championships. Amy Hillier – who received a Diamond Certificate from Prof. George Branch of UCT (author of several books) for attending lectures, snorkeling and examinations at the Two Oceans Aquarium. Amy has done more than fifty hours of voluntary work at the Touch Pool and at the Projection Microscope, organized a beach clean up and also obtained 91% for her examinations. Her commitment and dedication is admired. Yaseen Mowzer – as was previously mentioned in our Term 1 Newsletter, Yaseen will be participating at the Invitational World Youth Intercity Mathematics Competition in Taiwan in July this year. Yaseen was also the recipient of a Gold Award at the annual UCT Mathematics Competition. Gold awards are awarded to the top ten individuals in each grade of over 8000 participants from Western Cape High Schools. They are invited to attend a prize giving at the Baxter Concert Hall where prizes and trophies will be presented. Well done, you have done the College proud! Gillian and Robyn Pinder – in their selection to the Western Province Girls’ Hockey teams. Gillian has been selected to represent the U/18 North team. This will be her fifth year playing Western Province Hockey. Her team will be attending the U/18 Regional Tournament which will be held in Bloemfontein from 12 – 15 July. We wish her luck for the tournament and hope the team makes us proud. Robyn has been selected to represent the U/16A Western Province Hockey Team. The team will be going to Bloemfontein from 8 – 15 July to take part in the Inter-Provincial Tournament, where they will be defending their title as Inter-Provincial Champions. We wish her the best of luck and hope she makes us proud. Kerry Robison – who took part in a full contact Kyokushin-Karate Championship on 21 April held at UCT and won gold in her division (U/15 full contact). On 16 June Kerry took part in the National Full Contact Kyokushin-Karate Tournament in Sea Point and received 3rd place, competing against all our Provinces as well as Zimbabwe and Angola. Kerry will also take part in the Western Province Tournament in Worcester on 30 June 2012. Well done and good luck! She will also be taking part in the Western Province Tournament in Worcester on 30 June 2012. A family affair! Staff Congratulations to Mrs de Wet, who has not only been selected to the Western Province A Ladies Netball Team, but is also the Section Convenor, Head Selector and Convenor for the Western Province U/16 Netball trials; Selector of the Western Cape U/15 Netball trials and Coach for the Western Cape U/15 Team. Well done! We are proud of Mr and Mrs Lawson’s girls: Rochelle Lawson represented Western Province at the U/19 and U/21 SA Championships that took place at Selbourne Park, East London from 27 April to 1 May 2012. Roux-Jeanne Lawson was selected for the U/16 Western Cape Netball Team and will represent the above-mentioned at the All Ages Tournament in Boksburg from 23 to 29 June 2012. Congratulations to the Lawson family! AMENITIES With Mr Swart being on sick leave, I had to work closely with the general staff. Term 2 kept all busy with Project “Clean Up”. The general staff and I decided to “Spring clean” at the beginning of winter. Every store room in the school was tackled. We got rid of old outdated equipment, generated a few rands from the old classroom greenboards and washed and dusted. The general staff completed this project without ever neglecting their own daily tasks. Thank you to “Broertjie” and all the general staff. It was a privilege to work with you. Information and Technology: During the March holidays, further installations of interactive whiteboards and data projectors took place. Fairbairn College has 42 classrooms in total. 18 classrooms are equipped with whiteboards to write on, as well as a data projector to display lessons on. Another 18 classrooms have interactive white boards with data projectors. The two seminar rooms each have a data projector and on the one side there is an interactive whiteboard. Out of 44 teaching venues (including the Seminar rooms) there are only 8 classrooms still needing data projectors and white boards, which we will hopefully soon equip. The way we communicate with parents is through SMS web, webpage, Facebook and the school communicator. Please make sure that we have your correct cellphone number so that you can receive important SMS’s. We will shortly have a new look webpage, so watch this space. The school communicator is a small programme to be installed on your computer. The disks are available from Ms Combrink if you still need to install the communicator. The school communicator also has a new function whereby the school can send emails to parents, other than just SMS’s. Please ensure that all your personal information is updated on the school communicator. Ms M Combrink MIC: INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY EXTRAMURAL ACTIVITIES Culture: Young Communicators’ Competition The school entered Mimosa Yokwe (Grade 12) in a debating competition, namely the “Young Communicators’ Competition”. This is open only to learners whose HOME LANGUAGE is NOT English. The first round took place at the offices of the subject advisors of the Northern District. Mimosa gave an excellent account of herself and was invited to represent the District North at the Provincial finals on Saturday, 12 May 2012. This took place at the Provincial Legislature in Cape Town, where the Western Cape Government make the laws we all have to adhere to. Mimosa physically sat in the seats of the political decision makers of our Province and delivered her speech and forum discussion in the very chamber that the politicians use for their debates! Mimosa was placed fourth out of 15 competitors and won accolades for herself and our school. She also won a few lovely prizes – among these an MP-4 player! Mrs C Carstens This term our READ programme has continued with many learners and teachers enjoying the half an hour a week to simply ‘unwind’ with a good book. Term 2’s spelling test was yet again won by our A1 class, followed closely by the D2 class in second place and the C1 class in third place. Well done! Many learners have entered the Tygerberg Eisteddfod and we look forward to their results in the next newsletter.

Finally, we wish the cast and crew of ‘Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ well, as they spend the bulk of this holiday preparing extensively for their 3 evening performances at the start of Term 3. We say ‘break a leg’ and wish Mrs Crous and Mr Botes all the best for their hard work, extensive time and sacrifices made for our learners. Miss G Correia HEAD OF CULTURE Interact The Interact Society was involved in the following projects: 1. STOP HUNGER NOW: The meal packaging programme is a volunteer-based effort where our Fairbairn Interact learners packed 6000 meals. They also joined a second effort on a Saturday morning during Term 2. ‘Stop Hunger Now’ depends on

donations to fund each packaging event. What have we done to support this effort?

a) 5c coins: With the demise of our 5c coin on 1 April 2012, STOP HUNGER NOW has decided to collect all these coins. Every meal costs R2. Our learners donated 5c coins from 1 March – 30 April to the amount of R1200. This enabled STOP HUNGER NOW to feed 600 learners at a crèche. From 1 May – 4 June an additional R639.80 has been raised. Another 319 toddlers will be fed. b) FBC undertook to donate R4000.00 per annum to STOP HUNGER NOW to alleviate the hunger of our people in Western Cape. It would have been a daunting task to raise this amount in only a few months without the help of our learners and teachers. Thank you to Ms Correia and the Buzz committee for donating R1700. This has already been paid over to Mr van Niekerk, chairperson of STOP HUNGER NOW. A huge thank you to many of our learners and teachers and our Interact learners for donating coins on a daily basis.

A special thanks to the following teachers: Ms Malcolm, Oberholzer and Marais. We have reached the target of R4000.00. This will be handed over to STOP HUNGER NOW in the third term. On 17 August 40 of our Interact learners will attend the Winter Rally with ten other schools in the Northern suburbs. We plan to pack 30 000 meals during the day. Fairbairn College plans to host this event in 2013, with press coverage.

2. On Friday, 25 May 2012 Fairbairn College donated 450 portfolios to the Vredelust “Gemeente” in Boston. These portfolios were distributed to Nomsa Primary School in Khayelitsha.

3. Bread tags: We have reached the target of 100 000 bread tags. This will provide one wheelchair to a person in need.

4. A few of our learners did a Fun Walk with Alta du Toit Home, to raise funds.

5. Six bags of clothing have been donated by our Interact learners to be distributed by BADISA to adults in need.

6. Our learners are currently collecting baby clothes, which will be donated to a

Childrens` Home in Goodwood.

Sports Captains’ Seminar On Tuesday, 17 April 2012, we held our 7th annual sports captains’ seminar. The aim of the event is to guide our future sports leaders and to equip our sports captains with leadership skills. The seminar is open to all our captains, both boys and girls of all the teams in all the age groups for summer and winter sports – even our 1st Aid and Chess captains were there. The learners were addressed by Mr Marchand and taken through some leadership training. The basic expectations of captaincy were also discussed. Thank you to Miss Smit for her assistance on the day and also to the learners for their contributions. A record number of 58 captains/vice captains were present on the day. The seminar was enjoyed by all. Mr M Koffeman MASTER IN CHARGE – SPORTS MANCO Rugby U/19A The 1st Team played 5 matches, won 1 and lost 4. Three of the losses were close matches and could have gone either way, but unfortunately we were on the losing end in all three. Although we have some tough matches next term, we are confident that the second part of the season will be more successful. Mr A Fourie Coach U/19B and U/19C The 2nd team started the season with a tough game against Fish Hoek. Our boys tried their best, but went down rather heavily against a motivated, well-drilled team. Fairbairn’s coach, Paolo Caboz, tried his best to prepare our boys, but many shortcomings in our preparation became obvious during the course of the game. We then travelled to Green Point to play Trafalgar and put up a much better fight, but in the end it was Trafalgar that walked off the field victorious. More work needs to be done. We then played Hamiltons on home soil. This time the hard work done during the week paid off. The team came back from a first half deficit, to win the game convincingly. We were on our way...... We then played Monument Park, but were beaten in all facets of the game by a very powerful, well-coached team. Our last game of the term was played against our sister school, Fairmont High. This turned out to be a blinder of a game as both teams put up their very best performance. Once again, after being behind at half time, we were able to turn the scales in our favour. Our boys played together as a team and were on top of Fairmont at full time. The 2nd’s are a spirited bunch of players with a never-say-die attitude. The discipline in the side is outstanding. It is a pleasure to be associated with such a willing group of boys. Mr D Hanekom Coach

U/16A It has been a difficult start to the season, with the team playing against tough opposition. The team managed to record a well-deserved victory against Trafalgar High School, but careless errors and brief lapses in defensive structures cost the team dearly in the rest of the games. As a team, we need to develop a sense of patience with ball-in-hand and take our opportunities when they arise. I look forward to the remainder of the season and developing the skills of the boys further. Mr H Pienaar Coach U/15A The U/15 Rugby season started off on a very unlucky note with 6 boys out for the season due to injuries within the first two weeks. Pre-season matches were played against Monument Park as well as Eben Donges, resulting in a draw in both games. An even spread of results was recorded for the rest of the season, playing 6 and winning 3. Wins were against Bosmansdam, Hamiltons and Fairmont. The coach and players are looking forward to the second half of the season with many of the injured players returning. I am positive that the team will give a good account of themselves next term! Mr L Lawson Coach U/14A and U/14B For the 1st time in at least 8 years, we have been able to field an A and a B team at U/14 level – this is very exciting indeed and bodes well for the future. Our U/14 team has had a great start to their high school Rugby career, winning 5 of 7 games this term. The results are as follows:

Opponents Result Score

Bellville South Won 22 - 5

President HS Won 15 - 10

Fish Hoek HS Won 26 - 7

Trafalgar HS Won 21 - 17

Hamilton RFC Won 17 - 0

Monument Park HS Lost 17 - 14

Fairmont HS Lost 29 - 6

A huge thank you to all the parents for your loyal support and encouragement on Saturday mornings and also your willingness to always assist with transport – your sons and their coaches appreciate it very much. Mr M Koffeman and Mr T Russouw Coaches Mr M Koffeman MASTER IN CHARGE – RUGBY

Netball This term was jam-packed with matches, but it gave our learners the opportunity to show off their wonderful talent. This season we can brag with quite a few successes:

Samantha Verschoor has been chosen to represent Fairbairn College in the Western Province U/18 team.

Mrs De Wet has been chosen as the coach of the Western Cape U/15 team. We wish her luck at the upcoming National Championships.

Six brand new resurfaced Netball courts.

A total of 12 Netball teams (4 per age group). U/14A AND B The U/14A and B Netball teams have had a successful season thus far. The girls are very committed and eager to learn new skills to improve their game. The team spirit amongst the girls can clearly be seen in the results for the 1st half of the season. The U/14A team narrowly lost two of their games against strong opponents: Edgemead and Fairmont. They can, however, be commended on the way they handled themselves on and off the court. This team is currently placed 2nd on the log. The U/14B team is congratulated on ending the 1st half of the season undefeated and are placed 1st on the log. This team is definitely a team to be reckoned with. The secret to their success is the fact that they play as a unit and stick to their game plan right until the end. As Coach, I am looking forward to the 2nd half of the season and hope that both teams will end top of the log to make Fairbairn proud. Miss C Marais (U/14A and B Coach) U/14C AND D This term we played against Edgemead and won 8-2! We are looking forward to our game in the third term against JG Meiring. I would like to commend the girls on their team morale and spirit. The learners are always on time for practice and eager to begin and team members and parents are very supportive in games. There were quite a number of learners on the team who really shone this term: Sandisiwe Kula has shown great improvement in goal shooting and has shown leadership in the team. Jamie Conway entered my team with no knowledge of Netball at all, and has shown great improvement in her skills. She is a fast learner and I see a great future for her in Netball. Kelly Henry volunteered as the ball packer and “orange slices girl”. I am very proud of her! Miss N de Wet (U/14C and D Coach) U/16A AND B What a start to a new school, having to coach the U/16 A and B teams. With so much enthusiasm and team spirit, we could not help but have a great second term.

Page 11: FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE · 2012. 7. 25. · FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER – 2/2012 22 June 2012 From the Headmaster Dear Parents Term 2, 2012 – has been a good term. Each pillar of the

The A team unfortunately lost in a nail-biting game against Fairmont. We were victorious against Milnerton and Table View. The B team won against Edgemead and Table View. Both the teams were faced with a great challenge because of the tough opposition, but still worked smoothly as a team under Kiersten Meyer’s great leadership. A few players stood out this term: Catherine Fisher who changed her position and settled in well playing WA, learning to watch her space, she remained a super attacking player. The brilliant shooting duo Gabrielle and Zedré put the scores on the scoreboard - well done! The B team can be proud of Naima Hassiem who started as GS this term and improved greatly as well as the attacking side of the B team. Very well done girls – you have been a delight to coach and work with. You have improved greatly over the first half of the season and used new skills in game situations to enhance your play. I am really proud of you all and am looking forward to Term 3. Mrs C Saayman (U/16A and B Coach) U/16C AND D The U/16C and D teams played very well this season. The girls can be commended on their dedication and endurance this term. The C team was exceptional – the highlights of this term were beating Bosmansdam and Edgemead and ending the first half of the season unbeaten. They showed exceptional team work and spirit. I am very proud of them! Miss J Malcolm (U/16C and D Coach) U/19A AND B Under the leadership of Danica van der Zandt and Samantha Verschoor, we have had the challenging task of having to build a team from scratch - and all your hard work has definitely paid off! Thank you for your commitment and fighting spirit. You are an amazing team of girls! The first team is currently placed second on the log – highlights were winning our matches against Table View and Milnerton and the Interschools match against Fairmont that ended in a nerve-wracking draw. Tracy-Lee Solomons and Rochelle de Abreu have been incredible in the mid-court and they need to be commended on their fighting spirit. The U/19B team has had a challenging season so far, but we are going from strength to strength! This team of players personified “never giving up”. Through sheer determination you bettered even your best! Mimosa Yokwe has been the pillar of the team – thank you for your good leadership and strong positive attitude on court. Thank you for your beautiful approach, girls - I look forward to Term 3! Mrs J De Wet (U/19A and B Coach)

U/19C AND D It was a very pleasant and exciting experience this year coaching the U/19C and D girls. They are a very pleasant and lively group of girls – always willing to practise and learn something new. We played three matches out of which we won two. I indeed look forward to coaching next term! Mrs J van Tonder MISTRESS IN CHARGE – NETBALL I would like to congratulate the girls on the magnificent spirit displayed during our annual Interhouse Netball challenge. You have done the College proud by not only supporting your houses, but showing a beautiful attitude towards Fairbairn Netball. Congratulations to Somerset on winning the Netball section and to Napier on winning Spirit. I would also like to thank and congratulate all the teachers on a very successful season so far. Without your “blood, sweat and tears” we would not have started the 2012 season with so many successes! We look forward to our jam-packed Term 3! Mrs. J. De Wet MISTRESS IN CHARGE – NETBALL Girls’ Squash Girls’ Squash at Fairbairn College is growing most successfully. We are particularly proud of Emma Erasmus and Gillian Pinder and Chantel Tittleton, who have been selected as members of the Western Province squad. This term, for the first time ever, we entered 3 teams in the Western Province Leagues: a far cry from the mere 4 girls playing Squash as recently as 5 years ago. On Tuesdays, a regular bevy of 17 beauties playing Social Squash, invade our courts – and often have to be begged to leave at 17:00! Pride of place must go to our First Girls’ team, which is participating in the “A”-league against mostly Southern Suburb schools. The games are hotly contested affairs and Friday afternoons are exciting indeed. The results are as follows: Herschel: won 14 - 5 Rustenburg: lost 6 - 10 Wynberg Girls: won 10 - 8 Westerford: won 10 - 6 Springfield: lost 11 - 8 Our second team, playing in the “B” league, has found the going very tough, as none of the girls have ever played competitive squash before. However, the results are improving steadily and we hope that this augurs well for the future of girls’ Squash at Fairbairn. Special mention must be made of Nakita-Lee Croucamp and Samantha Fredericks, who have recorded good victories. Our “Thirds” have enjoyed their foray into competitive Squash, despite having to play some schools’ second teams. Their results show that Fairbairn has won 4 out of 6 matches:

Furthermore, Ms Wendy Pinder must be thanked for her enthusiasm and sterling coaching, and the captains and players for their dedication.

Mrs C Carstens MISTRESS IN CHARGE - GIRLS’ SQUASH Boys’ Squash This has been an up and down season for the Boys’ Squash teams. We unfortunately lost a few of our top players due to unforeseen circumstances, but still managed to field 3 teams in the Southern Suburbs League. Our 1st Team, consisting of Jason Wildschut, Richard Bester, Gareth Pauls and Justin van Straten, did exceptionally well, winning all their matches against schools like Bishops, Rondebosch and Wynberg. Jason did extremely well, not losing a single game, with Richard only losing one.

Our 2nd team consisting of Keanu van Rhyn, Nicholas Schultz, Rhys Mullen and Curtley Thomas, played good Squash but were up against tough opposition, winning 2 of their 5 matches. Special mention must be made of Curtley and Rhys, both playing Squash for the 1st time. Rhys is improving with every game and will be a force to be reckoned with next term. Our 3rd team , Danyal Allie, Keegan Titus, Joshua Lawrence and Jade Rietmann, had a rough 1st half, losing all their matches against 1st team schools. They showed great commitment and always gave off their best and I am sure, will achieve better results in the 2nd half of the season. Mr A Erasmus MASTER IN CHARGE – BOYS’ SQUASH

Girls’ Hockey 1st Team The season started off well for us with our new coach Niki du Toit. Her fresh ideas and insight into the game have lifted our level of Hockey to new heights. We also greatly appreciate having two Astro slots to practise in. With very few changes to the team since last year, our game has greatly improved. We have played some tough opponents and held our own in most of the games. It is with pride that we have defeated some teams that we lost to last year. The results for the first part of the season are as follows:

Fairbairn vs Brackenfell Draw 2-2

Fairbairn vs Reddam Lost 1-0

Fairbairn vs Edgemead Win 1-0

Fairbairn vs De Kuilen Win 2-1

Fairbairn vs Bellville Lost 2-0

Fairbairn vs Bergvliet Draw 1-1

We congratulate both Robyn and Gillian Pinder on their selection to the Western Province U/16 and U/19 teams, respectively. Well done girls! We would also like to thank our sponsors: Mr Parker (Frozen Fairy Ice Cream) and Mr Gay for their generous contributions to the team. Your loyalty and support is greatly appreciated. We also thank all the loyal supporters who make every effort to watch us play. Mr M Standish 1st TEAM COACH Unfortunately, like every year, the season seems to start suddenly and before we know it, we are playing matches, still feeling unprepared. The term then ends, just as we begin to get into the swing of things - a six week break in the middle of our Hockey season! Therefore, to prevent this from happening again, we need to keep fit and practise our skills at home. The results have been mixed, as we play many Southern Suburb schools and often against teams ranked higher than ourselves. (All for the benefit of having games instead of byes). The good news is that our Third Team beat JG Meiring’s First Team, 1 – 0! Our results against our sister school, Edgemead High, are as follows:

PLAYED WON LOST DREW

6 4 1 1

Our last outing was to Bergvliet High, where many players had the pleasure of playing on Astro for the first time and had the opportunity to see our First Side play! We appreciate the presence of Mr and Mrs Marchand, so far away and early in the morning! Finally, we would like to thank the parents who show so much interest in their children and help with transport and who support us every weekend. It means a lot to the players and school! To the learners, remember to keep fit (after all that is why we play Hockey), and enjoy the welcome break! Mrs M Ackermann MISTRESS IN CHARGE – HOCKEY

Boys’ Hockey 1st Team Once again we were very fortunate to secure a fantastic sponsor for this season. We are truly grateful for the generosity shown by Mr Rafiek Parker, from Frozen Fairy Ice Cream. The boys look very smart in the clothing acquired from this sponsorship. Our playing season started well with two easy victories in the Brackenfell sports day, which boosted the team’s confidence. After that we played in the Fairmont Easter Tournament and were drawn in a very strong pool. We managed to end 8th in this tournament. That was our pre-season and we felt confident that the term would go well. Unfortunately, this term was a bit up and down although an improvement was seen every week. We played 7 matches: drew 2, lost 3 and won 2. Again, we showed that we could become a force to be reckoned with when we drew to Westerford and Settlers, two very competent Hockey schools. Our leading goal scorer at this stage is Gareth Pauls. A player to definitely watch for the future is Gary Murdock who has been delivering very good Hockey on a weekly base. The team is looking forward to a bit of rest, but is keen to get going next term to change the win-loss ratio around. Mr A Brink 1st Team Coach The 2012 season kicked off with Fairbairn playing against well known rivals Westerford High school on astro turf. In the first term we played some strong teams. However, they pulled together and showed great courage and determination. U/19B Training started in March this year for the long season that awaited the team. From the start there was good commitment, as senior players made every effort to get fit and ready. The captain of the team is Joshua Thomas and vice, Keiron Smith. Special mention is made of Jason Wucherpfennig for his outstanding contribution as goal keeper in the team. Two great results - against Table View, Fairbairn won 5 – 1 and against Bellville 3 – 0. By the end of the season the players had matured into strategic thinkers on the field. Their game became more expansive and their defence tightened up tremendously. I thank the parents for their constant support, we greatly appreciated it! U/16A and B Our U/16A and B teams are very competitive on grass. We won most of our matches or lost by one or two goals. When it comes to playing on Astro, Fairbairn College struggles, as we practise on Astro, only occasionally. In 2011 the Fairbairn College U/16 team progressed to the semis in the so-called grass Knock-out tournament, but unfortunately this time round, we have been knocked out by a one goal loss, against De Kuilen. U/14A and B The U/14 boys’ Hockey teams of Fairbairn College had a rather slow start to the season, but with hard work and a fighting spirit, improved steadily throughout the season. The

boys always looked neat on and off the field and showed good sportsmanship week after week. They managed spirited victories against Table View, Durbanville High and Westerford, who are well known to be reputable Hockey schools. We look forward to continue improving steadily and are excited for what lies ahead in the second half of the season! Darion Hector has been selected to take part in the final round of the WP U/14 Hockey trials. We wish him all the best as he endeavours to make the team and College proud! Mr R Lombard U/14A and B Coach Mr A Mellett MASTER IN CHARGE – BOYS’ HOCKEY Chess It was a season of mixed results. We played 4 matches, won 2 and lost 2. The players showed enthusiasm and dedication. Special mention needs to be made of Fu-An Ni, who won all his matches. Miss N Qambela MISTRESS IN CHARGE – CHESS Debating Fairbairn College has made use of an outside coach, Mr Javan Moodley, a former South African debating winner. He is debating in Korea in July 2012 and our best wishes accompany him.

1. FBC vs Jan van Riebeeck - both our teams lost. 2. FBC vs Norman Henshilwood - both teams won and Simone Cornelius won the

Best Junior Speaker award. 3. FBC vs Bishops – both our teams lost. 4. FBC vs Wynberg Boys High - they did not field a senior team and we won by

default. Our junior team won with Simone Cornelius as best junior speaker. 5. Bergvliet High postponed the debate to 23 July 2012.

Mrs A Steenekamp MISTRESS IN CHARGE – DEBATING Choir The second term programme - Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Hours of practise, including a few Saturday rehearsals, kept the Choir on their toes. They are enjoying every moment of this wonderful musical experience and all are looking forward to impress our audiences at the three consecutive evenings – 16 to 18 July 2012. Strict discipline was our motto and I am proud to say that the Choir exceeded all expectations. Well done to all members who sat through long rehearsals and still did their best.
