Un buon progetto di una fondazione … non può prescindere dal progetto della sovrastruttura con la quale la fondazione forma un continuo strutturale e della quale la fondazione rappresenta i piedi con i quali si vincola stabilmente al terreno sottostante………………………..
… e invece cosa vogliamo evitare
Ho risparmiato un po’ sulla fondazione, ma nessuno se ne
accorgerà mai
“The foundation pressed downward with a force of 3.06 tsf (tons per square foot) while the clay beneath it could only support approximately 1.13 tsf based on samples”

Lessons Learned from this FailureIncidents like the bearing capacity failure of the Transcona Grain Elevator are mysterious in nature, but do allow for geotechnical theories to be tested. Decades after the actual failure a theory arose among geotechnical theorists that the internal friction of saturated clay is equal to zero. This theory had been circulating since the 1920s and many advances towards its proof were made, but there were no actual failures used in testing this theory until Robert Peck in the 1943. He used the data collected from the soil before and after this failure and through a series of Terzaghi’s equations about ultimate bearing capacity developed in the 1930s to prove that this theory was actually true. The proof of this theory allows for a variety of new assumptions and theories to be made about the tricky ways in which soil moves. (Morley, 1996)

(Vesic, 1973)
Vesic proposed a simple analytical form for correction factors to take into accountthe shape of the foundation. These coefficients are base primarily on theexperimental activity conducted at Ghent University by prof. De Beer in the early ‘60
Eccentricity of loading
There is no exact expression to evaluate the effects of eccentricity of the loadapplied to a foundation. However, the effective width method is commonly usedin the analysis of foundations subjected to eccentric loading (e.g., Vesic, 1973;Meyerhof, 1951, 1953).
In this method, the bearing capacity of a foundation subjected to an eccentricallyapplied vertical loading is assumed to be equivalent to the bearing capacity ofanother foundation with a fictitious effective area on which the vertical load iscentrally applied.

Foundation engineering
The general bearing capacity equation ……was derivedusing approximate empirical methods, with the effect ofload inclination incorporated by the addition of(approximate) inclination factors.
The problem of the bearing capacity of a foundation undercombined loading is essentially three-dimensional innature, and recent research (e.g., Murff, 1994; Martin,1994; Bransby and Randolph, 1998; Taiebat and Carter,2000a, 2000b) has suggested that for any foundation, thereis a surface in load space, independent of load path, containing all combinations of loads, i.e., vertical force (V),horizontal force (H) and moment (M), thatcause failure of the foundation.
This surface defines a failure envelope for the foundation.
Foundation engineering
A new equation describing the failure locus in terms of allthree components of the load has been proposed recentlyby Taiebat and Carter (2000a). The proposed approximatefailure equation is expressed as:
where α1 is a factor that depends on the soil profile. For a homogeneous soil a value of α1 = 0.3 provides agood fit to the bearing capacity predictions from thenumerical analysis.
Foundation engineering
Natural soil deposits are often formed in discrete layers. If afooting is placed on the surface of a layered soil and thethickness of the top layer is large compared with the width ofthe footing, the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil and thedisplacement behaviour of the footing can be estimated tosufficient accuracy using the properties of the upper layeronly. However, if the thickness of the top layer is comparable to thefooting width, this approach introduces significant inaccuraciesand is no longer appropriate. This is because the zone of influence of the footing, includingthe potential failure zone, may extend to a significant depth, and thus two or more layers within that depth range will affectthe bearing behaviour of the footing.
Foundation engineering
Bearing capacity charts for a strip footing on layered clay – soft centre “sandwich”.
Foundation engineering
Clay “sandwich” - stiff centre (c2 = 2 c1)
For this case the predicted ultimate bearing capacity is only slightly larger (1 to 2%)than the capacity predicted for a uniform clay layer with undrained strength equal tothat of the top layer.
Clay – strengthening with depth (c2= 2 c1 - c3 = 4 c1)
The ultimate capacity is essentially the same of the previous case, and in bothcases the capacity is only 1 or 2% more than that of a uniform clay deposit havingthe same strength as the top layer.
Foundation engineering
The situations can be either geometrically or mechanically significantly different fromthe previous simplified schemes. In all the cases numerical analysis can be used even if the prediction of a collapseload using numerical tools is not a trivial matter.
Can the bearing capacity be estimated by computing the averagebearing capacity over a particular depth, e.g., 1 to 2B where B is the footing width?
Is it possible to assess an average strength of the layers and then usethat strength in the bearing capacity calculations for a homogeneousdeposit to obtain a reliable estimate of the bearing capacity of the layered soil?
None of these two questions has a precise and unique answer !
