NEWZEALAND FRUIT SCANNING APPLICATION
INTRODUCTION
How fresh are the fruits from supermarkets? No one ever knows exactly how fresh are the
fruits that they buy from supermarkets are. We as a consumer depend on the features of
fruits to determine the freshness of the fruits . However features can be deceiving for
example a shiny apple could be due to a chemical usage to make it look fresh. Therefore to
assure the customers of the freshness of fruit we decided to make a technology that scans
the fruit and tells the consumers the quality and freshness of the fruit.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To provide quality fruit assurance to the consumers by using technology.
3.2 Industry Analysis: NZ Fruit Scanning Application Industry
Industry: NZ Fruit Scanning Industry.
Force: High/
Low:
Justification:
Buyer
power:
HighBuyer power is high for the application because there are other alternative applications to check the freshness of fruits. Such as MRI scanners, Healthy Food application, Tell Spec and more.
(NDTV Gadgets, 2013)
Supplier
power:
lowThe supplier power for Scanners Application is low because there are many fruit scanners such as MRI Scans, Healthy Food, Allergens, GMOs & Nutrition Scanner , GMO Checker , and Fruit Checker .The numbers of Programmers in NZ are high because there are about 16,941 programmers in NZ that could make
2
3
application easily.
(Programmers, 2014), (Dennards,D.2013)
Threat of
new
entrants:
high The threat of new entrant is high due to the low cost of
applicaitons. The applications can be made by any
programmers thus they are sold for low prices. Which results
in high threat of new entrants.
(Programmers, 2014)
Threat of
substitutes:
Low Threat of substitute is low because apart from using other
alternative applications to check the freshness of fruits. The
only way supermarkets could check whether the fruit is fresh
or not is physically.
Rivalry
among
existing
competitors:
High There are other compettitors present to test the quality and
fresh ness of the fruits with their application. Such as MRI
scanner, Fruit Checker, Tell Spec. Tell spec, fruit checkers are
cheap application.
(Dennards,D.2013)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: Porters Five Forces Model defines the Industry as
unattractive. However, other similar kind of softwares available in the industry are expensive
such as MRI scanner and are mostly found in hospital some don’t give a advanced
information based on the freshness of fruits like tell spec. So regarding that my chosen
industry is attractive.
3.3 Customers and Their Need
The potential customers for fruit scanning applications would be supermarkets like countdown in New Zealand. This fruit scanning application will reduce their production cycle

as they can save time just by scanning the product. The product meets the needs of the customers (supermarkets) by providing accurate information about the freshness of the fruit. The device is easy to use for customers to check fruit and is also quick to give information based on the quality of the fruit which helps customers to be more productive. RFID with two sensors enables the fruit freshness to be checked more conveniently and faster.
3.4 The Product and Service
The NZ fruit scanning application comes with a hardware device to enable it to work. The hardware device has Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Sensor and RFID the product can meet the customers need. The concentrations of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide are related to freshness and the affect it has on food. Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide sensor enables to monitor these gases and combine the sensor with an RFID tag. The RFID system is relatively easy to manage. With this combined system, it enables to estimate the freshness of fruits. By verifying the RFID reader, it enables to track how oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations and fruit freshness changes over time. Furthermore, using this data, it can easily enable us to check and display the freshness with LEDs colour. RFID is a very small system, uses non- or very small capacity battery, and is easy to use its application.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Partners.
Country Fresh Inc. - Country Fresh, Inc. is a provider of fresh cut fruits and vegetable in a
variety of blends and sizes and packaging options. By using fruit scanning technology they
could assure their customers about the quality of their fruits and increase their revenue.
Countdown Supermarkets In New Zealand – By using fruit scanning they’ll be able to assure
their customers that the fruits that they are buying is fresh which statisfy their customers
and increase their revenue.
Suppliers.

5
Software developers- Catalyst’s software development services are software application
developers who are going to supply the business with applications that enables the
technology to scan the fruit.
Scanner Technology components- Fujitsu is going to supply the business with scanner
technology component for the hardware .
3.6 Strategy: Differentiation Strategy
Porters generic strategy identified the industry strategy as Differentiation Startegy. It’s high
cost because there is a hardware device that comes with the fruit scanning application to
enable the application to work. The hardware device is expensive to make due to
components needed in the hardware device e.g laser lights ,testing and development of the
hardware. The technology is aimed at supermarkets in New Zealand therefore it’s broad
market.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Market and sell product
Market and sell the product is the important value chain activity. The customers for the
product is supermarkets in New Zealand which is a broad market. It is Differentation
startegy. There are other alternative software application to check freshness of the fruit.
Some application are expensive such as MRI scanner and some cheap like Tell Spec. So it
really depends on how the product is market and sold to provide quality food assurance to
the consumers using technologies.

CONCLUSION
By using NZ Fruit scanning application we can assure our cutomers that the fuits that they
are by are fresh. This could lead to improve in customer statisfaction thus increase in the
business sales and eventually lead to economic growth. The success of the product could be
measured by comparing the customers feedback on the freshness of fruits fro m
supermarkets before the application was implemented and after the system was
implemented.
