After nearly two months of renovation, the Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) Camp Allen Weapons Range officially reopened by holding a grand re-opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, Nov. 18.

The range, which is located on Camp Allen in Norfolk, received a complete overhaul including: new paint, decking, baffles, ventilation system and a state of the art target retrieval system that was installed by TargetWorx, a company based out of Annapolis, Md. who manufacture shooting range equipment, including target retrieval systems, turning target systems, bullet traps, indoor/outdoor baffle systems and sound abatement.

“The system that we had in before was about 7 years old, and even though it was still for the most part functional, it required a lot of mainte-nance,” said Mike Flanary, MCCS Camp Allen Director. “It became obvious over the last year or two that it was

actually going to be more eco-nomically feasible to replace the system than to continue to maintain it.”

Unlike the cable-driven re-trieval systems of yesterday, the new target system doesn’t use drive cables or electric bus bars along the track. From the sensors to the wheels to the drive motors, only the best parts available were used. In addition, the drive and turning motors are made in the USA and are of the highest quality. They are expected to last the lifetime of the carrier.

“The old system was basi-cally a cable system with non-bullet friendly armored target clamps,” said Carlo Galinato, the Range Manager. “Now, with the new system, it uses wireless transmission, there are no cables to be had and it uses an LCD screen versus a keypad. So, the whole notion of a target system is the shoot-er should be able to walk up to the screen and know how to use the system. Whereas our old one, we kind of had to teach them how to use the keypads for commands.”

After the ceremonial ribbon cutting and opening remarks, Col. Susan B. Seaman, Com-manding Officer, Headquar-ters and Service Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command (MARFORCOM) and Sgt. Major Scott R.

Helms, Battalion Sergeant Major, Headquarters and Service Battalion, MAR-FORCOM were ushered into the renovated range, where they each shot five ceremo-nial rounds with a M9 Beretta Pistol (9mm), the standard Marine Corps sidearm.

“This is a world class fa-cility made better and we’re very fortunate to have it here in Hampton Roads,” said Seaman. “Before I came here to this unit, I heard about this shooting range – where ever I go around Hampton Roads, I hear about this shooting range! It’s great for our units that are here, it’s great for in-dividual military personnel, it’s good for retirees – every-body.”

The facility is generally used by commands in the Hampton Roads area, but it’s also used for recreational shooting and Navy pistol and riffle qualifications.

“Marines love this place, but not just Marines … Sail-ors love it, Soldiers love it, Airmen, we’ve got them all, they all come over here,” said Seaman. “… it keeps them current, it’s great recreation on the weekend – a lot of people bring their families and their children and they teach them good procedures with weap-ons – so it’s a great facility.”

As one of the first official shooters in the range, she was impressed with the renova-tions of the facility.

“I’ve been working with Mike (Flanary), our director of MCCS, on the development of this and they really did go for what is the best out there right now,” she said. “Because we have so many customers, we’re able to put money back in here … so we were able to buy the best that there was to make this certainly the best in the Hampton Roads area, but

even probably for many states around.”

Helms was also equally im-pressed.

“I’ve been here 90 days, I came from Camp Pendleton. As soon as I got here, one of the first things I heard is about was this pistol range,” he said. “I got a chance to come over and look at it and (I was) to-tally impressed in what it offers the Navy and the community in their qualifications, and then for the Marines, it gives them a place to keep some proficiency and makes them feel good to get in and be able to shoot a weapon, because in Norfolk, that opportunity for Marines here is very limited.”

The facility is open to all branches of the military (active, reserve, retirees and dependants), law enforce-ment officers, DoD person-nel, Department of Homeland

Security personnel and federal government employees.

“I think that many Marines come over here mostly for what we call ‘familiarization fire,’ but there are units that come over here and get their qualifications, which is obvi-ously so essential to what we do in the Marine Corps and the Navy,” Seaman explained. “The Navy really likes it be-cause they use pistols much more than we do aboard their ships.”

In addition to the many ren-ovations to the facility, safety was still paramount.

“From my perspective, the first thing was the facility itself … making sure that the walls are built the way it is supposed to be, that the background backstop can actually stop the bullets, that when you come in you are not breathing lead – you’re actually breathing

clean air – that’s my biggest part,” said Vincent Negron, MCCS Deputy Director. “… when you fire a firearm in-doors, the gunpowder kind of sticks around a little bit. Our ventilation system pushes it away from you so that you are not tasting the lead.”

The range is located at Camp Allen on the corner of Rodman Ave. and Mogadi-shu St. in Norfolk. It is open for command shooting from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Mon. - Fri.). Rec-reational shooting is available from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Mon. - Fri.); 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Sat.); and 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Sun.).
