Trainers, athletes and coaches are becoming more and more aware that hands on techniques like massage, Active Release Therapy (ART) and Muscle Activation Therapy (MAT), can work wonders for injured athletes. However, soft tissue care should not only be used to help injured athletes in their recovery but should also be a daily routine for anyone that wants to improve how they move and how feel.

At the elite level of sport there is always or should always be a good manual therapist available to athletes. However, massage becomes extremely expensive if it is kept up for any length of time and may not be feasible for everyday gym-goers, youth athletes or aspiring sports people that are not earning the big bucks yet. The solution to this problem is self massage and one of the best ways to do this is through foam rolling. So you could say that foam rollers are the poor mans massage therapist.

Self-myofascial release (SMR) as it is also known by most physi-cal therapists helps decrease tissue density and over-activity which then makes the tissue area or fascia more extensible when you start stretching or moving. If done consistently foam rolling or self myofas-cial release will help you or the athletes you coach perform better for longer periods of time.

What is a Foam Roller and how do You Use It?A foam roller is simply a cylindrical piece of hard-celled foam. The

techniques are simple. Basically, you just use your own body weight to sandwich the roller between the body’s soft tissue and the floor. Once a sensitive spot is hit make sure to concentrate on this area for a bit until you feel a release of tension.

Things to be aware of when Foam RollingFoam Rolling can be quite hard work, particularly for weaker or

overweight people as the arms are heavily involved in moving the body to roll. Foam rollers come in a variety of sizes and density. The new ones such as the Grid from Trigger Point Therapy actually has a hard shell which gives it a more solid feel and helps the roller last longer. Be careful as to which density of roller you choose as the feel of the roller and the intensity of the self-massage work must be properly geared to the age, and fitness level of the client.

Good self-massage work through foam rolling may be uncomfort-able much like stretching but it should never be unbearable. In a recent DVD on foam rolling, it was stated that it is important that athletes or clients learn to distinguish between a moderate level of discomfort related to a trigger point and a potentially injurious situation It was also stated that foam rolling should be used with discretion in those clients with less muscle density and that it should never cause bruising. The reality is that the athlete or client should feel better, not worse after a brief session with a foam roller.

When to Foam RollFoam rolling can provide great benefit both before and after a

workout. Whether you are getting ready to perform a strength workout, plyometric session or stretching routine it very important that you take the time to foam roll before you do that. Foam rolling can also be used in injury rehabilitation programs. If you are preparing for an event then foam rolling before you warm up will benefit you as well. It is great prior to a workout or static stretch session as it decreases tissue density and basically releases tension in your myofascia. So always foam roll before you stretch. Rolling after a workout may help speed up the re-covery process so the next time you work out you feel fresh and ready to go.

• Helps prevent common injuries. One of the most important reasons for a regular foam-rolling routine is to prevent those often too common exercise-related injuries. Many runners, for example, be-come painfully well acquainted with their IT band if they don’t take care to massage the band of tissue. IT band syndrome and other similar flare-ups can be caused by too-tight muscles. Foam rolling every day ensures you are massaging away fascia buildup in your muscles, in order to help prevent those areas from becoming injury trigger points.

• Helps you de-stress. Had a hard day? Foam roll your worries away. Digging for those knots releases tension that is built up in the connective tissue to keep you less stressed. Most experts recommend a simple all-over body routine in order to combat the “desk posture blues” that happen from sitting too long in the office.

• Keeps you flexible. Building up your flexibility is key for any fit-ness routine, Tim says, which means you constantly should be stretch-ing and doing exercises that’ll help you gain flexibility. Stretches that lengthen your hip flexors, for example, can help combat tightness from sitting as well as lower back pain.

SIX12 RaceTech Race RepoRtThe 2012 Thor Winter National Olympics or more commonly known as Mini O’s brings hundreds of families to Gaines-ville every year for the week of Thanksgiving for one of the biggest amateur nationals of the year. Mini O’s is the last big national of the year but it is actually the kick off of a new year. The new bikes are out, riders have switched teams, switched classes, and everyone is looking to make a splash. The Olmpics of MX was started by the West Family years ago, where the riders traveled to a few different tracks in the area. The races have included Flat Tracks, TT’s, Harescrambles, SX and MX. The race has grown so large now that its just a SX and MX competition, which is then combined to see who the champ is in each class. In 2012 Wyn Kern and the Unlimited Sports crew had the track and facility in great condition once again. The sport looks like it is in great hands with the turnout of SX and MX! Supercross started on Monday with practice and qualifiers, Tuesday would hold more qualifiers and LCQs while Wednesday would see the Finals! We take a look in SX.

Geico Honda has hired another gun to run on their amateur team for 2 years and then graduate up to their Pro Team. Jordan Smith jumped over from Suzuki and is now on Hondas and it looks like Smith has adapted extremely well to the Honda. Smith was racing in 5 total classes, 250 B Stk and Mod, Open B Stk and Mod and School-boy (13-16). You could tell Smith has been practicing a lot of SX at his training facility at MTF, because he won all 5 finals! In the School-

boy class Daniel Baker put up a strong fight on his Rockstar Suzuki but it was Smith coming out of top, Zachary Bishop-Burnett was 3rd. In the 250 B Stk final it was Darian Sanayei on his Pro Circuit Kawa-saki pulling the holeshot and leading for over half the race as Smith came from behind and started to reel him in. With 2 laps to go Smith would make the pass on Sanayei and take the win. Matthew Bur-keen was 3rd. In the Mod it was Smith taking the win over Plessinger and Baker. Smiths win streak continued in the Open B Stk and Mod classes even though he rode his 250f. Smith would not have the best of starts against the 450s but he would play it smooth and consistent and go to the front every time! In the Stk class he won over Tyler Mc-Swain and Plessinger. In the Mod class he took his 5th overall over Cade Clason and Burkeen.

The Rockstar Star Yamaha rider Cooper Webb might have put together some of the most impressive rides of the week in Pro and A classes. Starting it off with the first Final of SX in the 250 A class Webb would start outside the top 5 as Bisceglia had the holeshot and led them around on his Geico Honda. Jace Owen was in the #2 spot on his ClubMX Suzuki. Owen would make quick work of Bisceglia and get into the lead and pull a lead. It would take Webb a couple laps to catch the top 2 but he was coming quick. Webb with his smooth and flowing riding style was carrying more speed around the entire track and making no mistakes! He would take the spot of Bis-ceglia and then with the race closing down made the pass on Owen! In the 250 Pro Sport class Webb was the man once again this time beating out Shane McElrath on his TLD Honda and Red Bull KTMs Dakota Alix. Webb would do the same thing as Smith in the 450 class, riding his 250f. He would suffer from poor starts once again but would continue to make his way through the pack passing everyone and going to the front. Webb would take his 3rd overall win in the 450 A class over McElrath and Alix once again. In the 450 Pro Sport class it was a battle with McElrath and Bisceglia along with Webb. Webb would get to the front but then go down and would hand the lead over to McElrath who would play it smooth and take a title in SX, Webb would finish 3rd.

In the C Class the Suzuki rider of Addison Emory IV from Oolagah, OK was a man on a mission! Emory put on a show by winning every Main Event in the C classes. In the 250 C Stk he took the win over Nathan Hall and Keenan Mokma. 250 Mod saw Emory won over Austin Pare and Jose Maldonado. In the Open C Stk he would take the win over Shane McElraths brother, Kyle, and Victor Gonzalez was 3rd. In his final and 4th title for SX Emory took the win over Brokie Keefe and Destin Deerman. Jarek Balkovic was the top Youth (12-16) rider as he came out and won the Stk class easily on his BPM

Keith Johnson was a 2 time winner on the Plus 35 and Plus 40 classes over Mike Treadwell, Scott Sheak and Barry Carsten. Carsten took the win in the Plus 45 over John Grewe and Earl May. In the Plus 50 class Thomas Dretzka took the main event win over Kirk Lewis and Eddy Taylor.

Chase Sexton made a big splash on his Yamaha in the 85cc (12-13) Stk and Mod and then Mini Sr (12-15) Stk classes. Sexton would win all 3 Main events, in the (12-13) Stk class he took the win over MCR Suzuki’s Joey Crown and Tanner Stack. In the Mod class it was Sexton once again over Tanner Stack and Timmy Crosby. His final win in the Mini Sr. Stk was over Ashton Hayes and Max Markolf. Jordan Bailey swapped wins with Brock Papi as the two KTM riders were strong in the 85 (9-11) Stk and Mod classes. Bailey would take the win in the Stk and Papi in the mod, coming in 3rd was Garrett Marchbanks in Stk and Dylan Greer in Mod. Justin Rodbell took home 2 wins on his Cobra 65 in the 65 (10-11) Stk and Mod classes. The rider from Prince Frederick, Maryland beat out Tommy Rios and Jalek Swoll in Stk and Jack Rogers and Rios in the Mod Class. Ethan Mann would win the other 65 class, the (7-9) Stk and Mod classes. Over Justin Cokinos and Bradford in Stk and Branden Walther and Bradford in Mod.

Florida Girls would take the win in the Girls (9-11) and Girls (12-15) Classes. Jazzmyn Canfield would continue her winning streak on her Yamaha by winning another title in the (9-11) over Paige Norwood and Jordan Jarvis. Hodges took her Farren/PR2 Suzuki to the top spot in the (12-15) over Gracie van Horn and Savannah Gaston.

FLMX: Jordan, congrats on winning Mini O’s! Let’s start out with SX. How did the heat races go? JB: The stock heat race went great and I won. However, I made a mistake in the mod heat race and landed on the edge of a hay bale on the step-on, step-off jump before the whoops. I fell off the side of the jump and landed at the bottom but no damage was done and I got up and still easily qualified for the main.

FLMX: Wednesday were the Main Events. What were the Mains like? Any good battles with the top kids in the Nation?JB: The mains were fun. I took control of the stock main event from start to finish and won the cham-pionship. Unfortunately, I fell in the mod main event by being impatient. I was fourth through the first few turns and quickly moved to second and I immediately closed the gap to first but came in a turn too fast and couldn’t stop so I fell. I ended up coming back through the pack for a second place finish but it was very disappointing.All week there was a lot of great racing with the other top National racers from other states and it is always fun to race with them.

FLMX: How did you like the track this year? What did you think about the whoops?JB: I loved the track. The jumps were fun and the whoops were huge but I just tried to be smart in them. My dad kept telling me that at our level the race won’t be won in the whoops but you can throw it away by being impatient in them so I just stayed consistent and patient.

FLMX: Thursday through Saturday we transitioned back to MX. How was practice and your qualifi-ers?JB: Practice was a bit scary because I got a flat front tire but as we moved to qualifiers I was excited to hang it out a bit.

FLMX: How were the finals and how did you end up overall for MX and the week?JB: The finals were awesome and I won all of my qualifiers and mains for both stock and mod class-es. Overall, I won 3 out of 4 Championships and I was awarded the overall SX and Outdoor Champi-onships along with the Ironman Award so it was a fantastic week.

FLMX: You made a big move recently going to KTM. How is the Orange Brigade?JB: In one word - Awesome! But yes, I recently signed with Red Bull & KTM so it is an honor to be part of their elite program. The KTM 85 is an unbelievable bike and I’m now understanding what my dad means when he says “you get what you pay for” with KTM’s. It is an exciting team to be a part of and KTM is dedicated to the amateur-racing program.

FLMX: WMR is a big part of your program. What all are they doing for you?JB: WMR is a huge part of the program! They are doing everything with all my motorcycles. My dad and I are very excited to be back with them and have always had complete confidence in them. I don’t think many people understand how much work they put into things, but we know because they used to build all my KTM 65’s and everyone at their shop is totally committed to success. I think the entire WMR shop speaks for itself because they are so passionate about racing and helping riders on all levels. I always encourage racers to visit them and they will see it for themselves. They can build you a bike like mine!

FLMX: Who else is associated with your program that is helping you?JB: Robb Beams with MotoE along with Colleen and Brian at MTF. They are always helping me and they mean a lot to me. Also, Bithlo MX track where I practice the most and I hope to see people out there.

The rider sign ups increased dramatically as many riders choose to sit out the SX due to many riders not riding much of those types of tracks, or the long travel and schedule with work and school. They would have to actually open up another field for parking that hasn’t been open in years! It’s great to see out spot to continue growing. Many classes would have over 40 riders and have to have multiple qualifiers, and would actually count toward as their first moto score, and then the riders converging for the second moto’s resulting in the overalls. The riders could not have asked for better weather during this week as the temperatures would start off cool and get up to the mid 70’s during the day.

With hundreds of riders racing MX, and multiple qualifiers the MX takes a full 3 1/2 days to get through all the races and practices. One rider who had a fantastic week in his first ever A/Pro National was Rockstar Yamaha’s Cooper Webb. Webb would win 3 out of the 4 classes on the week and take the overall for top rider of the week. In the 250 A class it was Webb over Jace Owen and Shane McElrath. In the 250 Pro Sport Webb took the win again over another Yamaha rider Paul Coates and then McElrath finished up third once again on his TLD Honda. In the 450 classes Webb came out on his 250f to take the overall in the A class over McElrath and Jace Owen on his ClubMX Suzuki. The only class he would not win came in the 450

Jordan Smith kept his Geico Honda on the winning train in MX by winning 4 out of 5 overalls! Starting out in the Schoolboy (13-16) class Smith would take home the overall over Aaron Plessinger on his Yamaha and Mark Worth. Jumping into the 250 B Stk class Smith took the win over Rockstar Suzukis Daniel Baker and SIX12RaceT-ech/CarportEmpire.com Hondas RJ Hampshire in 3rd. In the Open B Mod Smith took his final win over John Short and Cade Clason. The only rider to bring his win streak to an end was RJ Hampshire. Hampshire took the overall and title in the Open B Stk class over Aaron Plessinger and Franklin Nogueras. In the C Classes it was all Tristan Lane on his Kawasaki taking 2 titles in the 250 C Stk and Mod classes. Lane did not race SX so coming into MX and winning was impressive, especially after breaking his leg at Loretta Lynns. In the Stk class BPM Hondas AJ Meadows was 2nd and Neviker Romero was 3rd. In the Mod Lane took the win over Austin Pare and Mead-ows. Addison Emory got back into his winning groove in the Open C Stk and Mod class by taking home both titles over Kyle McElrath, Victor Gonzalez, Austin Pare and Daniel Fernandes.

The Plus classes would see a good variety of winners throughout the classes. Michel Sandoval put together a great ride in the Plus 25 class taking the title over Michael Sleeter and Forrest Smith. In the Plus 30 Sleeter took the title over Keith Johnson and Jim Neese. Plus 35 saw Jim Neese taking the win over Johnson and Scott Sheak. Johsnon would get his win in the Plus 40 over Mide Treadwell and Barry Carsten. Plus 45 was Barry Carstens title over John Grewe and Allen Alford. Plus 50 saw John Camelio win over Steve Rayborn and Mark Guy.

Jumping into the 85cc classes Jordan Bailey took his WMR KTM to the top spot in the 85 (9-11) Stk and Mod classes. Winning the MX titles and overall titles for those classes on the week. In the Stk class he won over Brock Papi and Kruz Sampson. In the Mod class it was Parker Marshburn in 2nd and Brock Papi 3rd. Enzo Lopes took home 2 titles, in the 85 (12-13) Stk class over Chase Sexton and Tanner Stack. He then backed it up in the Mini Sr. Stk class over Stack and Sexton. Austin Forkner won 2 titles on his Pro Circuit Kawasaki in the 85 (12-13) Mod over Stack and Logan Stokes. Then took a big win in the Supermini 1 winning over Mitchell Harrison and Ashton Hayes. Harrison would win Supermini 2 over Challen Tennant and Ashton Hayes.

In Women’s I got a 6th place start and had passed up to 3rd – when I got to the turn after the whoops me and another rider got together and went down. I picked my bike up and the pipe was destroyed. My lap times were good and everything went as planned.

FLMX: How were the finals and how did you end up overall for MX and the week? HH: The finals were pretty solid. I pulled the holeshot in Girl’s 12-15, raced the track and won the championship. In the Women’s I ended up with a 7th overall. In Supermini 2 I had good starts and had some good battles, ending up 14th overall.

FLMX: Farren/PR2 is a big part of your program. What all are they doing for you? HH: Being with Farren Racing and PR2 Suspension and Motors is like having a full factory ride at the amateur level. They cover travel and entry fees for nation-als, support year-round testing, and have a world-class bike waiting for me at the track. When my family and I arrive at the nationals, we can focus on the race and not have to worry about all of the things that we used to have to take care of. Joining the Farren Racing and PR2 team has been a great experience for me and my family. I am very blessed to be part of the team!!

FLMX: Who else is associated with your program that is helping you? HH: MTF! Colleen, Lil’ Brian and Big B have helped me get to the next level. I am thankful to have them in my corner!

FLMX: Hannah, congrats on winning Mini O’s! Let’s start out with SX. How did the heat races go? HH: Thanks! In Girl’s 12-15 I pulled the holeshot, raced the track and won my heat. In Women’s I got a 6th place start and had passed up to 3rd – when I got to the turn after the whoops me and another rider got together and went down. I picked my bike up and the pipe was destroyed. I worked my way back up to 3rd and set the fastest lap of the race. FLMX: Wednesday were the Main Events. What were the Mains like? Any good battles with the top kids in the Nation? HH: The Mains were good! I won Girl’s 12-15 and I rode well in Women’s. Taylor Higgins and I had a good race and it was fun battling with the women on their bigger bikes. I finished 3rd in Women’s. FLMX: How did you like the track this year? What did you think about the whoops? HH: The track was good - the whoops were big and I like them since they help separate the riders. The Final Round of the Vortex Lites Championship Series was held the Saturday before Mini O’s kicked off up in Gainesville. The final round would enable riders to make up or lose very valuable points as it was a double points night! Hamp-shire was way out front in the standings and was pretty much un catchable. He was looking for his first ever Championship in this class. The track conditions and weather were fantastic as their was a little chill in the air as winter is approaching.

In the Main Event Hampshire pulled a perfect start and had the holeshot aboard his brand new 2013 CRF 250. His confidence is extremely high getting 2 new bikes, dominating the heat race and timed practice. He would lead around KMS Kawasaki’s Nicholas Guessford and DJ Macfarlane on his KTM. Behind him it was Daniel Cooke and Rich Wilkes. Guessford would make a big mistake before the finish line section, almost crashing and handing the second spot to Macfarlane. The rider sitting 2nd in points, Austin Diperna struggled with a bad start and found himself around 7th.

By lap 2 it was Hampshire with a second lead over DJ and then another 3 seconds back to Guessford as the front 2 stretched it out quickly. Lap 3 saw DJ pull in some time on Hampshire and RJ was looking back! DJ had his KTM 250 2 Stroke ripping and he was looking to stop the dominance of Hampshire. RJ then started hitting all his lines perfect and pulled out a solid gap on DJ. Their was no other changes going on behind them as Guessford had a solid cushion on Cooke. At the end it was RJ with a solid win and the championship! MacFarlane would finish up 2nd and Guess-ford 3rd. RJ also won the big Sponsorscup class so he went 2-2 this year and is your 2012 Champion!
