WELCOMEWith the autumn boat shows fast approaching, September is traditionally the time when the yacht builders of the world announce new models to their line up and show us the yachts of the future. This year is no different and we therefore make no excuse for a bumper issue packed with magnificent yachts! First up, Vicem Yachts present their wonderful 46M motoryacht ‘Vulcan’, our cover yacht this issue. With the feel of a much larger yacht, she combines impressive performance with a very high quality standard. We are also delighted to feature in this issue, Lürssen Yachts magnificent 88m ‘Quatroelle’, arguably one of the finest, most beautiful yachts ever built. Next, we feature ‘Kamaxitha’, the superb 55m Spirt of Tradition ketch which shows unbelievable performance for a yacht of her size. Trinity Yachts, fresh to Floating ASSET, feature their superb ‘Tsumat’; Sunreef take us on a tour of Dubai onboard their great 70’ motor catamaran ‘Damrak II’; Oyster, the top British builder show us their latest superyacht range; Hargrave, one of the world’s top custom yacht builders show us several of their superb range of new yachts, while Baglietto, the leading Italian luxury yacht brand give us a glimpse of their latest models. If this wasn’t enough, Burgess Yachts the leading superyacht broker sent us details of no fewer than 5 newbuild superyacht projects they are involved in and Oceanco show us their latest megayacht projects. Finishing off with an indepth look at Sunseeker Yacht Charters, Fraser Yachts collection of explorer yachts for sale and much, much more, which hopefully means we have brought to you a magazine to give you hours if not days of reading enjoyment.

Have fun and enjoy!

more spaceThe CURVELLE quaranta has four decks and a nine metre beam, which is one extra deck and two metres more beam than a comparable monohull.

As a result, the internal and external space for guests is about 50% more than a traditional 34m and comparable with a 40m – 42m performance monohull.

more stabilityIt is better to stand on two legs than one. Even at anchor …..

It is a well-known fact that catamarans are far more stable than monohulls.

more valueDue to clever design and logistics, we have been able to slash the cost by half, without any compromise on quality and safety.

Now under construction in Istanbul, aggressive introductory pricing is available while the yacht is under construction. The delivery date is Spring 2013.

more speedThe CURVELLE quaranta cruises equally well at a performance speed of 25 knots or at a trans-Atlantic economy pace of 10 knots – and any speed in between.

The most efficient fuel consumption per nautical mile is about 20 knots and the fuel savings are around 30%.

more flexibilityThe 6 double cabins with 6 bathrooms on the main deck can be easily configured into 3 suites, each with his and hers bathrooms.Whether you cruise with 3 VIP couples, a large group of grand children or your golfing buddies, the flexible layout can be customised in a few moments by the crew.

PRINCESS TO ADD 35 METRE YACHT TO ITS MAGNIFICENT M CLASS RANGEPrincess Yachts International is set to add a new 35 metre craft to its growing range of M CLASS cruising yachts in 2014, following the global success of its flagship, the Princess 40M - the largest composite motor yacht ever made in Britain. The new Princess 35M will be a semi-custom motor yacht capable of cruising both at high and low speeds with an impressive long range and outstanding efficiency, while providing expansive deck areas and comfortable and spacious accommodation for owners, guests and up to six crew.

The M CLASS range of technically advanced and highly customisable yachts – which now includes the Princess 32M, the new 35M and the World Superyacht Award-winning 40M – has stamped the Princess marque firmly on the 100ft-plus market, demonstrating the Company’s ability to design and build some of the most technically advanced superyachts and cementing its reputation as one of the world’s most experienced shipyards.

Offering a sizeable gross tonnage of 243gt, which is 25% larger than that of the 32M yacht, the new Princess 35M provides greater internal volume and, as a result, exceptionally generous accommodation, relaxation and entertainment areas throughout. The luxurious interior creates a significant sense of space and light and has been designed to ensure that the owner and their guests can maximize their use. The flexibility of the design also affords the owner the opportunity to choose from a number of different layouts.

PROJECT ‘SUNSET’NEW SUNRISE 45M SOLDPreparing this issue in July, Sunrise Yachts announced they had signed an order for a 45m/147’ motor yacht codenamed ‘Project Sunset’. The Antalya-based yacht builder will deliver the second vessel in the Sunrise 45m series to a North-American yachtsman. ‘Project Sunset’ has been designed by Studio Scanu and will have an interior design by Franck Darnet Design. She will be delivered in the summer of 2014.

The Sunrise 45m is a three-deck, deep-sea, full displacement, long-range, steel hull and aluminium superstructure luxury motor yacht, built to operate for private use or charter in all seas and oceans of the world. The yacht’s main characteristics include large volumes at 499 Gross Tons, excellent deck heights, great stability, comfort and seaworthiness, very low levels of sound and vibration, an affective layout, and extreme fuel efficiency.

The interior design is entrusted to the talent of Nantes-based Franck Darnet Design, who had previously designed theinterior for M/Y ‘Africa’, the first Sunrise 45M. In sharp contrast with ‘Africa’s dark tropical wood interior, ‘Project Sunset’s contemporary and elegant décor will feature light veneers and a bright colour scheme.

Guillaume Roché, the Sunrise Yachts CEO, stated: “Just like M/Y ‘Africa’ was one of the ‘star’ yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show 2009, we intend to make ‘Project Sunset’ one of the most notable yachts delivered next year worldwide. We will further demonstrate our commitment to excellence and to continually improving our standards while remaining a competitive alternative to quality European builders.”

The client, who wishes to remain private, shared his thoughts about the shipyard: “When I considered this acquisition, after doing extensive research on the market, I was a little nervous about entrusting a relatively new builder, in Turkey, with my first yacht project. I had to meet the entire team and to see the shipyard for myself. I have to say that neither myself nor my consultants were expecting to see such a large and modern facility, integrating a full engineering office and filled with new construction projects. What impressed me the most is the spirit of genuine love for their craft that pervades the team. I encourage every prospective yacht owner to meet the Sunrise management. I know I am getting a great yacht at great value.”

Enrico Gobbi of Team for Design has given Floating Asset an exclusive preview of its 87m superyacht design, M.Y. PANTHEON. Enrico Gobbi has created this concept for the prestigious Dutch superyacht

company, Oceanco, as a response to feedback from the market for yachts of this size. Gobbi has designed a yacht with an imaginative interpretation of propulsion, layout and interior design to reflect ‘a sleek design, nicely proportioned and stylish, but not a big palace’, says the Italian designer. ‘One of the briefs was to have a lot of glass – clients want wide windows for views’.

Gobbi meshed the requirement for glass with the popular feature of a private owner’s deck. ‘On the two uppermost decks is the

two-level master suite,’ he says. ‘It’s common to have this location but in this case, the owner has an incredible panoramic view from a private ‘glasshouse’ / sky lounge located on the top deck.’The sky lounge, which is essentially a ‘glasshouse’, includes the night area, bathrooms, which as well as offering exceptional views outside, could also be configured to overlook the private suite’s living areas located on the deck directly below through a big atrium with a scenic round staircase that connects the two Owner deck levels. The external deck of the upper level is exclusive to the owner, with a big Jacuzzi pool in the front sun area. The owner could arrive by helicopter using the touch-and-go pad on the upper deck aft and walk straight into the lower level of the suite – without passing through any guest areas........

With the intention of maintaining the exceptional views throughout the ship’s design, a two-deck-high section of the superstructure amid ship leans outboard towards the sea creating panoramic view points from all decks whilst simultaneously flooding the interiors with natural light.

As with many of Oceanco’s yachts the stern of the ship hosts an impressively spacious beach club. However, this concept houses a large pool split over two levels connected by a waterfall. The upper pool features a large bathing area and a bar with the water cascading into the lower deck pool which can be used as a Jacuzzi /whirlpool. Furthermore, the transom folds out to create an incredible extended beach deck for lounging and entertaining. However, security is never breeched, as when the transom is closed, as well as offering an elegant and aesthetic line to the yacht it also guarantees maximum security.

Subject to owner preferences the yacht will have four double guest cabins and two very large VIP suites on the upper deck, and it will sleep 27 crew plus the captain. The project will be officially presented in Monte Carlo during the next Monaco Yacht Show 2013. Oceanco’s Y-coded generation of hulls could form the basis of Gobbi’s 87m and the design has been assessed technically as far as possible so that upon commission it will be ready-to-build.

No yacht under 100 feet comes closer to the grand scale and versatility of a superyacht than the new Oyster 885. The huge split cockpit is perfect for al fresco dining and the large, open deck areas feel like they belong to a much larger yacht. If you have one eye on recovering some of your investment, the 885’s dimensions avoid the costs involved in offering a larger yacht for charter. All in all, the new Oyster 885 is a truly magnificent yacht, however you look at it.

Quality and innovation - Proteksan-Turquoise

Following the huge success of the recently delivered 70 metre plus award- winning superyachts, TALISMAN C and VICKY, Proteksan-Turquoise’s two latest projects offer the same levels of excellent build quality with a highly attractive value proposition. The dramatically styled NB 55 is a 76 metre Andrew Winch design priced at EUR 57,500,000. With the hull already completed, her buyer can enjoy a close involvement in determining the yacht’s specifications, layouts, interior design and potentially also the exterior styling, such as opting for an explorer style version with helicopter hangar. Versatile options can also be entertained for the vessel’s interior configuration including a large multi-functional living space on the bridge deck which leads out to a unique indoor/outdoor gym and exercise terrace. Guest accommodation has currently been conceived for up to 16 guests in 8 suites including a spectacular forward-facing master suite with private balcony and terrace. There is also an open beach club terrace and helicopter landing pad isolated at the bow leaving the stern completely clear for leisure. NB55 is being built to ABS classification and is MCA LY2 compliant, with a projected top speed of 17 knots, and delivery can be taken in 30 months.

NB 57, the second new project from Proteksan-Turquoise is offered for sale at EUR 32,500,000 and also allows design flexibility in a number of key areas including modification to the length ranging from 59.9 metres (for access to ports such as St Barth’s and St Tropez) up to 62 metres. Design features incorporate seven guest cabins, a gymnasium, beach club, garages for large tenders and a 5 person elevator. NB 57 is MCA LY3 compliant, with top speed capabilities of 16 knots and delivery time is 36 months. Each Proteksan-Turquoise superyacht combines high quality construction and design innovation, with world cruising credentials. “Either of these spectacular new projects will enable a buyer to have an open and flexible involvement with the build process and the customisation of their superyacht. We are already experiencing a high level of interest in both vessels, due to their provenance, design offering, and – of course – exceptional value,” said Dominic Millman, a Burgess yacht broker in London.

Fast track customisation - Tankoa Yachts

The Tankoa Yachts shipyard is run by a strong corporate team, backed by considerable recent investment both in impressive new yard facilities and project design and development. The Tankoa S65 is a 65 metre superyacht currently 50% complete with the possibility of a 15 month delivery assuming adherence to the current specification and design. Her sistership, the Tankoa S70 offers a potential delivery of 20 months. Both vessels can be modified to a length overall of 70-72 metres and represent an unbeatable incentive in the new build market at now significantly reduced asking prices of EUR 42,000,000 for the S65 and EUR 45,000,000 for the S70. Currently designed with ‘flat’ transoms and an integrated fold-down door, a 5 metre stern extension with a larger fixed beach club platform is a design option to extend either vessel. A spacious and attractive accommodation layout for 12 guests is proposed, comprising a panoramic owner’s apartment on the upper deck with a private deck area and a full beam VIP suite and four guest suites on the main deck, but complete flexibility exists for adaptations to be made to this existing configuration.

While interior design concepts developed by Guigiaro or David Chipperfield are included in the asking price, the package can be modified to incorporate new interior designs as specified by a buyer. Various key features include an aft deck pool, beach club and gym on the lower deck, a ‘touch-and-go’ helipad aft on the sun deck, guest elevator to all decks, two tender ‘garages’ for a couple of large tenders and enclosed stowage for jetskis towards the bow. Both vessels are being built to dual Lloyds and RINA class with a ‘Green Star’ environmental notation and MCA compliancy. They are powered by twin 2,480hp Caterpillar engines, expected to deliver a maximum speed of approximately 16.5 knots and a range of 5,000NM at 12.5 knots. Sales broker Charles Dence, at Burgess in Monaco, says: “Tankoa offers reassuring levels of experience, comprehensive warranties and the yard is also prepared to consider flexibility in the structuring of a deal in order to incentivise new build business. Buyers looking for a compelling opportunity in this size range should have this yard firmly on their radar.”

Remarkable world explorer – McMullen & Wing

Inspired by the award-winning success of McMullen and Wing’s 45 metre expedition yacht BIG FISH, which went on to achieve an extraordinary charter track record, her 50 metre sistership BIG STAR was conceived by the same owner and is now under construction at the same New Zealand yard. Sharing the same highly efficient displacement hull form as her acclaimed predecessor, BIG STAR offers incredible volume, stability and outstanding sea keeping characteristics as already well proven by BIG FISH’s 60,000NM programme of global cruising. Naval architects Gregory C Marshall are proposing several superstructure concepts, drawing on the most popular features of this much admired expedition vessel. Her current design includes a flexible layout for up to ten guests in five cabins, a private owner’s deck and extensive outdoor living options, including a fabulous aft deck with splash pool, jacuzzi and spacious sun deck. There is full scope for a new owner to bring their own influence to the interior layout and design of this masculine,

modern design which is already equipped with an immaculate engine room and a comprehensive inventory. With an asking price of US$30,000,000, BIG STAR can be launched in less than 2 years, offering a buyer the rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding high volume 50 metre luxury custom expedition yacht, fully warranted by her original award-winning New Zealand shipyard, at significantly less than replacement cost. McMullen & Wing pride themselves on the relationship and service they offer their clients. Managing Directors, David and Terry Porter are personally very committed to every project: “For us, a custom yacht is a process, not merely a product. It is the creation of a yacht which responds to, and extends, the dreams of her owners. For the owners, our clients, a custom yacht is an experience: one of the most personal acts of creativity an owner can undertake”.

THE RETURN OFITALIAN STYLE

Baglietto, the historic shipyard based in La Spezia, recently premiered its

new stylish yacht range that will mark the Company’s new era, which started in 2012 following the takeover

of the shipyard by the Gavio Group.

September/October 2013 - Floating ASSET | 83

Baglietto’s new range includes steel and aluminium displacement yachts from 43m to 60m and aluminium planing yachts ranging from 38m to 50m. As regards the former, construction is already

ongoing on a 53m and a 46m yacht whose design stands out for an interesting combination of styles. Every single detail has indeed been painstakingly studied to achieve an unprecedented result: the streamlined stem reminds of Nordic boats and the slightly square lines of the main deck glazing and along the freeboard, alternate with softer ones, like those of the solid wood curved handrails of the deck gangways. A new 58m yacht was presented at the Monaco Boat show 2012 and the design of a new 43m yacht will be presented at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.

In the aluminium planing yacht series, two vessels - 38m and 42m long - are now being designed and will be presented during this year’s Monaco Boat Show, while a 46m yacht is currently under construction, characterised by slender outer lines and a receding, aggressive bow juxtaposed to a sturdy stern with hawse-holes. The trapeze-shaped windows in the hull alternate with rectangular ones arranged on two different levels to enhance the slender shape of the hull, giving a more contemporary touch to the yacht’s highly appealing outer profile. Baglietto’s range is completed by the fabulous, recently launched 44m M/Y Monokini, which will represent the shipyard during the the autumn Boat Show season.Baglietto 46M

Baglietto has earned a prestigious reputation in the Italian yacht and ship building industry since 1854. Its new era started just over a year ago, and has so far realised a complete re-launch of the brand, its products and its production site. The Gavio Group, a leading group operating in various sectors (motorways, engineering, the building sector, transport and logistics, energy and telecommunications), took over Baglietto in early 2012 and embarked upon a far-reaching project ranging from product strategy – which maintains its world-class design and innovative approach - to military vessels and refitting activities. The new owners have also significantly invested in the extension and upgrading of the shipyard’s infrastructures.

The takeover of the Baglietto brand and of the La Spezia facilities – together with the Cerri brand – marked Gavio’s debut in the boatbuilding and luxury yachts sector.

“Baglietto is an icon of Italian and international boating. It is part of the history of our country, and - in spite of the current difficult investment climate in the boating sector -, I was convinced that investing in it was the right choice. Baglietto means Made in Italy heritage, which needs to be preserved and promoted: we finally have the opportunity to launch new lines and even some very special projects that will be gradually unveiled over time and that we hope will conquer all yachting enthusiasts - said Baglietto’s Chairman, Mr Beniamino Gavio. “This is why we have intentionally preserved a strong connection with the past, entrusting once again Francesco Paszkowski (who has been the shipyard’s leading designer for over 20 years) with the design of the brand’s new lines and thereby ensuring continuity, but also innovation”, concluded the Chairman.

“After an over-twenty-year cooperation with Baglietto, being able to design new-generation yachts is a great privilege for me, as well as a challenging and, somehow, new task. Thanks to our firm’s extensive knowledge of the shipyard and the brand, we have been able to draw inspiration from Baglietto’s historical stylistic features and to reinterpret them in a contemporary style that preserves the brand’s traditions and core values” stated Francesco Paszkowski.

The reconstruction of the entire production site in La Spezia, currently Baglietto’s only site, is a pillar of the relaunch project promoted by the new Owners, who have invested approximately €20 million to turn the La Spezia pole into one of the leading excellence centres of the entire Mediterranean basin over the next few years. Together with the construction of new yachts, which remains the “Seagull” brand’s core business, Baglietto intends to develop and strengthen refitting and repair activities too:

“The new shipyard will be perfectly equipped to offer excellent services and ensure the same level of quality and care that characterise all its products” stated Baglietto’s CEO Mr Diego Michele Deprati.

‘Quattroelle’

The owner, who up-graded from a 60m Lürssen yacht, has many years of owning and chartering different types of yachts behind him. He required top notch design and engineering as well as seagoing comfort for his family, guests and crew. The owner’s captain, Paul Bell, and the team around yacht broker Robert Moran of Moran Yacht and Ship supervised the project and brought in their huge spectrum of experience and consolidated knowledge.

‘Quattroelle’ is the first Lürssen yacht designed by Nuvolari & Lenard, who were responsible for the exterior as well for the interior design. She is a successful combination of elegance and sport and she looks well on her way to becoming a classic. With its massive volumes, the size of the yacht was a challenge but with careful volume distribution and a study of proportion, Nuvolari & Lenard nonetheless achieved a sleek appearance on the yacht. The funnel design is resonant of the air scoop of a formula one car and with its inverted shape creates the distinctive silhouette of ‘Quattroelle’. Her six decks offer her 12 guests enormous space for both entertainment and relaxation. The interior can best be described as “contemporary eclectic”. The comfortable feeling comes from a balanced connection between tradition and the best use of the decorative materials that Europe has to offer. The whole interior is customized, from pieces of furniture, to hardware, to lighting, combining a sophisticated palette of woods, stones and fabrics.

When entering ‘Quattroelle’ through the main entrance into the wood and marble floored foyer there is an immediate mood of a classic yacht. The foyer provides a very impressive staircase as well as an elevator accessing all decks from lower deck to bridge deck, and a day head. The gorgeous bronze handmade balustrade is an impressive feature perfectly matching the dynamic and fluid spirit of the interior throughout the boat.

Aft of the foyer, guests directly enter the formal dining salon, with seated dining for 16 but can also be enlarged for up to 20 guests. To enjoy the panoramic view while having a dinner, the outer bulwarks in the dining room are designed as outboard folding flaps allowing complete separation from the main salon and library which are further aft. The chandelier and the table are both exquisite works of art. The dining table combines a wavy metal panel, engraved with a thick glass top, its depth capturing the light of the beautiful chandelier above.

The designs in the carpet are repeated in the fabrics of the wall and the chairs. The side wall, which separates the dining room from the library, is encased in leather incorporating beautifully engraved floral pictures.

The library and formal main salon offer enormous space for guests, with comfortable couches and chairs in warm browns, beiges and blues. Pieces of furniture have been included with a sharp eye for detail and finish, from the blue artglass, to the curved and bold shapes of the joinery.

Forward of the foyer, two doors lead into the cinema’s lobby and then further forward to the guest lobby. The cinema is the ideal place for relaxing while watching a movie and offers space for all the guests.

The main deck hosts five guest suites, of which three are large VIP suites. The VIP suites offer double beds and the other two guest suites offer twin beds which can also be converted into queen-size beds.

The décor of each cabin is different but all continue with the warm brown, beige and blue colour theme.

The big advantage of having the guest cabins on the main deck instead of on the lower deck, as is the case on many other yachts, is that it gives not only a better separation between guests and crew, but it also allows for larger and finer accommodation with very large windows allowing for masses of natural light.

Half of the upper deck is dedicated to the owner’s area, which includes a private study, two children’s cabins, the owner’s suite with his and her bathrooms and personal dressing rooms. The owner’s suite offers spectacular panoramic views and includes a side door giving access to a cosy private seating area. The warm décor underlines the very convenient and contemporary overall look and makes one feel very comfortable indeed.

The huge his and hers sumptuous bathrooms includes a large shower and a Jacuzzi. While the luxurious walk-in wardrobe is the size of an extra cabin.

The outside forward deck is designed to be the owner’s private area, separated by privacy doors on the exterior walkways on both sides, but can also be used as a helicopter deck.

Repeating the layout of the main deck, a small lobby with day head leads aft from the foyer into the upper deck lounge. The lounge offers ample seating and relaxation areas with a large TV screen, bar, and a self-playing Steinway piano. The upper salon allows the natural light coming from the exterior to meet the earth colours of the interior materials, giving the whole room a cosy feeling.

The outside aft deck offers extra-large spaces and different areas with a favourite exterior dining place, offering two round tables which can be converted into one large table for up to 18 guests. The complete aft deck can be enclosed with glass panels much like a winter garden and additional overhead heaters ensure comfortable dining in colder climates or in more chilly weather conditions.

The aft deck is very inviting with its large seating area for relaxation and impeccably laid out triangular awnings fixed on carbon-fibre poles ensure perfect sun protection. In addition to the state-of-the-art wheelhouse, the bridge deck houses a radio room, ship’s office and captain’s accommodation, as well as a generous owner’s private lounge decorated in light tones. The outside aft deck hosts a large pool with jet flow, surrounded by comfortable sun beds and seating areas.

Stairways on both sides lead to the top deck, which offers a protected area for a gym, including beauty and massage rooms as well as a sauna. Forward on the top deck is a Jacuzzi with a spectacular panoramic view and in conjunction with the sun beds which surround it, is a perfect area for relaxation.

Treated water for both the pool on the bridge and the Jacuzzi on the top deck is stored in separate holding tanks with individual temperatures so that the pool and the Jacuzzi are ready for use at short notice.

Aft of the lower deck is the upper engine room as well as the enormous tender garage which hosts two Colombo/LT tenders: one Limo tender and one open tender, both designed by Nuvolari & Lenard, both of which can be launched sideways through the hull doors. In addition there is plenty of space for any other kind of water sports equipment, including a dedicated dive equipment room.

A watertight door leads into the beach club area which includes a day head, a changing room and a sofa area equipped with a TV. Leaving towards the aft through the stern door a bathing area is accessed with an enormously sized fold-out bathing stair which can also be used as a collection point for guests. The tank deck hosts plenty of space for the crew including a crew mess, crew lounge and crew office. Suitably sized and perfectly laid out laundry and fridge and freezer rooms can be found on the tank deck as well.

The engine room is the heart of the yacht and a masterpiece of Lürssen engineering with polished stainless steel applications. Powered by 2 CAT engines of 2,000kW each, Quattroelle’ reaches a top speed of 17 knots and has a range of 6,000nm. Elastically mounted equipment guarantees extremely quiet running of the yacht and zero speed fin-stabilizers reduce wave generated motions when at anchor.

For low emissions the auxiliary engine exhaust system is equipped with HUG particle filters and soot burners which are fully compliant with the current IMO air pollution requirements. The system provides excellent fuel efficiency as heat is not generated electrically but directly by burning spare fuel thus demanding less generator capacity.

‘Quattroelle’ is a family yacht built for pleasure, but above all other considerations, she is a yacht intended to be self-sufficient during extended voyages on the high seas and well equipped for whatever she may face.

A fascinating combination of authentic traditional ketch and advanced offshore rocket ship, there is more to Kamaxitha than first meets the eye. Thanks to the Spirit of Tradition revival, enthusiasts of fine traditional sailing yachts can now enjoy the spectacle of a host of elegant new classics in ports, on passage, and at regattas around the world.

Kamaxitha’s owner is one such enthusiast and one who could see no reason why fine traditional lines should be in conflict with sparkling performance and exceptional handling. He commissioned Dykstra Naval Architects to design, and Royal Huisman to build, a yacht that carried with it a spirit of tradition, combining classic hull lines with a highly advanced underbody, keel and rudder configuration to complement a powerfully efficient ketch rig. For good measure, he invited Rhoades Young Design to create an interior that stakes a strong visual claim to yachts of an earlier era yet incorporates all the luxurious amenities and operational necessities of the modern era.

The result is a yacht that inspires, both as a fine recreation in the classic tradition and as a true sailor’s yacht of the present day.

With her elegant sheer line, dramatic plumb bow and fine counter stern, the 55m (181ft) ketch Kamaxitha looks every inch a worthy successor to the working sailers of a former erato which she pays homage – boats such as the Bristol pilot cutter and the Brixham trawler.

With no portholes to interrupt her topsides Kamaxitha looks both traditional and purposeful. Her fine hull lines, accentuated by a gold-leafed cove stripe and visually uninterrupted teak cap rail, are complemented by a traditional ‘open bulwark’, clean open deck spaces and neatly proportioned teak-clad deckhouses.

Sympathetic period features include two beautifully-joinered skylights inset with bevelled glass. In keeping with tradition, deck planks are laid fore-and-aft parallel to the yacht’s centreline, running without interruption, it seems, through hatches that show no visible margin planks. The twin helms are thoughtfully positioned to give exceptional lines of sight over the deckhouses and to create a reassuring sense of scale that belies the size of this yacht. These helms may introduce a more modern note, but care has been taken to maintain a sense of authenticity in their presentation: the helm station displays and controls can be lowered out of sight when not required, the helm seats and surrounds are finely joinered teak gratings with varnished margin planks, and the carbon ventilation louvers are cleverly disguised with a thin layer of varnished teak.

The carbon composite masts and rollaway booms and the Duplex high tensile stainless steel bowsprit are all spray-painted cream, a further evocation of a former era, while the aesthetic simplicity of a clear working deck and uninterrupted topsides is emphasised by the absence of any visible anchoring equipment. This is achieved by way of a submarine anchor and launching system, sealed by a profiled hatch below the waterline.

With her plumb bow, long waterline, low wetted-surface areas and high sail area to displacement ratio, Kamaxitha is designed to deliver fast acceleration and high speeds. To optimise that potential, she sports a fine canoe under-body with flatter after-sections, a fully ballasted 62-ton lifting keel (which can be raised or lowered in just over two minutes), and a deep spade rudder fabricated from carbon composite. Almost all the keel weight is concentrated into the bulb, ensuring a low centre of gravity to balance out the powerful driving forces of her rig. Draft extends from 4.5m (15ft) to 6.75m (22ft) for optimum performance as well as the ability to access the widest choice of ports and anchorages.

Dykstra Naval Architects also devised a powerful ketch rig capable of carrying up to 2,449m2 of downwind sail. The rig features Rondal carbon composite masts and rollaway booms, North 3DL sails, and composite forestays for lightness and stiffness. The whole rig is easily and efficiently handled by a sail-handling system that employs Lewmar high speed drum winches, Reckmann furlers, Rondal captive winches and feeders, and Rondal custom-built deck hardware including blocks specially upgraded to meet high loads within a compact format.

Social life aboard Kamaxitha revolves around the main deckhouse, together with the main cockpit and helm stations neatly grouped behind the companionway and protected by a sun awning. The main cockpit is designed to provide secure, sheltered seating with excellent views and easy access to service from below, as well as social interaction with the helm.

Behind the mizzen, the aft deckhouse is an extension to the owners’ suite that offers private deck-level amenity and shelter while also giving access to the delightfully secluded owners’ cockpit affording excellent all round views.

Forward of the main deckhouse two tenders are accommodated when at sea. In port and in secluded anchorages with the tenders afloat, this space can be transformed into a charming and imaginative alfresco dining area with a specially designed dining table installed beneath a tent of orientally-influenced design that neatly connects to the main boom.

On stepping into the main deckhouse, one immediately encounters the calm, peaceful ambience of tradition that Rhoades Young has so successfully created throughout the interior of this fine yacht. One of the principal themes is matt-finished ‘Sweetania’ mahogany joinery, known for its calm grain and consistent hue, which sets an elegant tone beneath hand-painted white deckheads set above contoured and chamfered beams and lit by period style light-fittings. Fielded panelling is complemented by railings of hand-turned spindles, and bookshelves surmounted by shell-design pediments. To further enhance the period finish, locker doors are hand painted rather than sprayed, intentionally leaving the subtlest traces of hand brushwork. The floors are immaculately laid in walnut.

This traditional evocation belies the fact that Kamaxitha, in the Spirit of Tradition, is furnished to levels of luxury and equipped to standards of technology that could never have been dreamed of in earlier times. The great skill is in designing and building an interior that delivers all the benefits of modernity whilst maintaining a credible aura of period authenticity.

Double ‘pocket’ doors from the cockpit retract neatly out of sight on a roller system to provide access to the main deckhouse. Here the upper salon fulfils its role as a social hub with casual seating and dining for eight to port (extendable to ten) and a navigation station to starboard, all with commanding exterior views.

Going forwards, elegantly splayed stairs give access to the main salon where a ‘Gentleman’s bar’ to port, complete with beer tap, overlooks a relaxed and intimate casual seating area around a fireplace. To starboard, there is an attractive formal dining area for eight (extendable to ten) and a short corridor that provides access to both the forward twin guest cabin and to the crew quarters for service.

Stairs aft of the main deckhouse offer access to a day head and another twin guest cabin to port, to a double guest cabin to starboard, and to the owners’ suite aft.

The owners’ suite comprises a large double bed in a classic bed box, walk-in wardrobe, an office with casual seating, double bathroom with bath, shower, separate wc and bidet, and a separate steam cabin. Steps aft lead to the owners’ upper lounge in the aft deckhouse: a light and spacious area with excellent privacy, offering direct access to the snug owner’s cockpit. All cabins benefit from the natural light thrown by deck skylights and from the rich visual interest created by the use of colourful, fabric-lined panels in outboard recesses.

Considerable thought has been given to achieving maximum flexibility of guest accommodation. A high level Pullman berth is installed above the inside bed of the aft twin guest cabin; an additional mobile Pullman can be set up for extra berthing on the outside of either of the aft guest cabins; and there is a sofa bed in the lower salon. Guests using the sofa bed can use the day head, which has shared access to the shower serving the portside aft guest cabin. The forward guest cabin has been specially configured to be also accessible for a wheelchair user.

Kamaxitha is very responsive at the helm, especially for a boat of her size, manoeuvring with agility and speed on her high aspect fin and bulb keel. Off-wind, Kamaxitha has already demonstrated the ease with which she can reach and sustain her theoretical hull speed of 17.8 knots.

With potential speeds in excess of 25 knots, this is a rocket ship in elegant clothing - and one that is very pleasing to the eye!

Yachts design, naval architecture and exterior styling and a breathtaking interior design developed by Ramon Alonso of Loguer Design and J.C. Espinosa of Espinosa, Inc., ‘Tsumat’ embodies state-of-the-art engineering and yacht building technologies with interior simplicity, contrast, warmth, consistency and comfort.

140 | Floating ASSET - September/October 2013

September/October 2013 - Floating ASSET | 141

The name ‘Tsumat’ comes from an ancient Mexican dialect and means “beautiful girl” or “princess”. Subtle in meaning and strong in phonetics, her very name challenged all involved in her build and design to unite the power of the ocean with the grace of a superyacht. Contemporary and comfortable, ‘Tsumat’ sets a high standard by making use of every inch of space, resulting in an overall sense of spaciousness, warmth and refinement that is felt throughout the vessel. Her layout includes six staterooms and a tender garage, allowing for an oversized sundeck complete with workout stations and ample relaxation options. ‘Tsumat’ is intended to provide every amenity for her active owners, family and their guests.

With a draft of less than 8’ (2.4m) at half load - one of Trinity Yachts’ marvels of superyacht engineering given a 164’ (49.9m) length - ‘Tsumat’ manoeuvers easily in shallow-water destinations while maintaining her transatlantic capabilities. Simultaneously, ‘Tsumat’s 28’ (8.5m) beam creates exceptionally large living space and plentiful and comfortable room for crew: ‘Tsumat’ accommodates 12 owners and guests and 11 crew.

“Tsumat is the result of our passion for architecture, translated into the world of yacht design,” says Ramon Alonso of Loguer Design. “The design team’s Latin and European influences and the use of select materials and elements historically found in Mexican architecture, such as walnut lattices, solid blocks of stone and hand-stitched leather details with a high level of craftsmanship were the key ingredients in the creation of ‘Tsumat’s interiors. Coupled with the design concept centered on comfort, attention to detail and simplicity, ‘Tsumat’ blends natural and high-end materials with the latest technology thus creating functional spaces of great elegance,” he adds.

Simplicity and contrast is achieved by the consistent use of neutral tones found in open-grain walnut and dark oak veneer accents, brown and beige leathers, wool carpets, and light textured suede. Natural granite and onyx slabs as well as different marble blocks were hand selected and imported from Mexican quarries to emphasize the purity of the design. Stainless steel fixtures and hardware were selected from the finest European manufacturers. The cabinetry throughout the yacht was designed using the same wood species and stones.

A six stateroom all en-suite layout includes a full-width main deck owner’s king master suite - with wrap around forward facing windows providing 180-degree panoramic views - with an adjacent owner’s study and walk up en-suite His and Her heads, featuring custom-made orange onyx sinks with stainless steel fixtures over Thassos marble countertops with walls covered with horizontal textured stone tiles. The shared shower is made with full slabs of white Thassos marble on floors, walls and ceiling, all enclosed in frosted glass. The master suite is spacious enough for seating, ample storage and a 42” pop-up plasma TV. Four guest staterooms - two king and two twins for children and their friends - are on the lower deck amidships. A fifth queen guest stateroom features breathtaking views from the pilothouse deck. Berths are framed in open-grain walnut and leather with waterfall edges, and flanked with hand-stitched leather wrapped nightstands. Large windows assure guests remarkable views.

The main deck is highlighted by wonderfully open space in the main and dining saloons including elegant seating for 12, a complete bar and wine cellar, a spacious galley with island bar seating for enjoying the preparation of sophisticated cuisine and a full beam al fresco lounge.

Oversized and comfortable sectionals and a custom made dining table with backlit onyx inserts provide a perfect setting. The interior design team’s Mexican architecture influence is reflected in the walnut wood lattice ceiling above and a terracotta fabric background is artfully emphasized through the use of indirect led lighting making the space more intimate.

Transitional areas like foyers and stairs are distinguished with chocolate tile leather floors and delicate leather covered railings. Wall and ceiling panels are upholstered in suede of contrasting colours and textures.

The warmth of the main deck flows into the sky lounge, providing a refined space for relaxation and amusement. The focal point of this spectacular space is the bar, which features a one-of-a-kind ocean inspired countertop and two amazing pieces of art from the owner’s private collection.

Tsumat’s full-width sky lounge also features seating for 12 to dine al fresco, the captain’s en-suite stateroom, pilot house, two sun pads, and, as noted, the fifth guest stateroom. Her sundeck is immense: hot tub, bar, dining for eight, quad chaise lounging, treadmills, weights, twin sun pads and still room for the rescue tender.

Whether recreating or relaxing, Tsumat’s uppermost deck opens to the world’s oceans with unparalleled amenities and expanses. “This is the second yacht I have designed for this particular client,” says JC Espinosa.

“His request, as in the previous project, was for a clean, modern and elegant yacht. Since he always travels with family and friends, we provided large outdoor gathering spaces on all decks and an open interior plan with large spaces flowing together within the public areas,” says Espinosa.

“We worked closely with Geoff van Aller of Trinity to make sure the end result would please our client. In my 25 years in the megayacht business, this is my first time working with Trinity and I must say they have delivered an outstanding yacht, Tsumat!”

From the rugged peaks and whitewashed villages fragrantly perfumed by frankincense in Oman, to the glistening modern skyline anchored by the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, to the serene seafront of the Doha Corniche in Qatar, the beauty you behold cruising along the dazzling

Persian Gulf shores will fill you with awe. With glorious sunshine, azure waters and an expansive coastline, catching the magnificent sunset over Abu Dhabi from the deck of ‘Damrak II’ must surely be highly ranked on the list of ‘must do’ in the Middle East.

The impressive 70 Sunreef Power, ‘Damrak II’, is a custom-made, 4-cabin luxury catamaran providing sumptuous accommodation for 8 guests and impresses both novice and experienced yachtsmen with her combination of high-speed performance and luxury accommodation.

Designed with the elegance and speed of a motor yacht, she offers the low draft advantage of a catamaran to transport guests even closer to paradise.

Her interior is a superb example of a modern, elegant and clean style with wenge veneer furniture and light-beige alcantara upholstery. Daylight streams in through the many well situated portlights and hatches, making her a very lucid and well-ventilated vessel.

Seaworthy, elegant, efficient, comfortable and easy to handle, this stylish yacht has superb proportions and a unique elegance designed by the talented, world famous naval architect, Philippe Briand.

Boasting a fast, powerful and reassuring hull - ultra-modern with its hard chine and sharp bow - the yacht’s weight has been carefully distributed to ensure excellent passage through choppy seas. This is backed up by a well-balanced, sleek sail plan - with her mast brought aft, the CNB 76’s sail plan allows a perfect distribution of the sail area between main sail and foresails. CNB also offers customised solutions to suit different types of sailing.

On board, there is a large and fully-equipped manoeuvring area, clearly separated from the living spaces and centred on the twin helming positions. The CNB 76’s cockpit is altogether efficient, safe and comfortable. A retractable Bimini, hidden in the roof, shelters the cockpit.

Forward, a large, uncluttered foredeck has a particularly clean deck layout allowing clear passage along the wide side-decks and easy access to the cockpit, made even easier by the absence of breaks or significant differences of level.

At the stern, there is a tender storage area big enough to house a 3.85m tender which can be easily handled by an electric hoist.

A large hydraulic swimming platform extends to the sea and then serves as a tender launching ramp. This tender garage is flanked on each side by large storage lockers.

The lines of the CNB76 perfectly integrate a raised saloon, ideal when sailing as well as when moored.

Inside, her layout is as harmonious as it is comfortable and truly functional. The interior of the CNB76 has been designed by Jean-Marc Piaton, who decided from the outset that, although the CNB 76 is capable of short-handed sailing, it should be capable of accommodating a professional crew whose presence and activity would not disturb the owner’s and guests’ privacy.

A very large, bright, particularly modular saloon offers more than 2m headroom, as indeed does everywhere else in the yacht. Being the yacht’s main entertaining area, the saloon is off-centred to allow easy movement below deck.

The owner’s cabin is peaceful and bathed in light thanks to the three portholes and three opening deck hatches. It is located forward to be isolated from the noise of life on board.

With stylish accommodation for up to 8/9 guests plus 2 crew, the interiors are all spacious, clean and light. The CNB 76 galley is also truly spacious for a yacht of this size and superbly equipped. A large hatch gives direct access from the galley to the cockpit, perfect when passing refreshments on deck when underway. With several orders already in progress, it is clear that the CNB 76 is destined to be another highly successful model for this renowned French shipyard and a luxury yacht to explore the seven seas with total peace of mind.

Give Hargrave Yachts fifteen minutes of your time and they are delighted to prove to you that Hargrave Custom Yachts offers a unique blend of quality, value,

and customization in the 20m - 40m (70’-135’) size range. Some competitors offer one component and some offer two, but no other builder in this size range offers all three, and here’s why that is important to you:

QUALITYQuality is the single most important ingredient in any yacht and is the core principle of Hargrave Yachts. Let them walk you through a new Hargrave and they will show you examples of where the company strive to exceed the already high standards of the top production builders in the world. More importantly, Hargrave will explain how you can control the quality of your project to ensure the yacht meets your exact needs, beginning with the initial design and continuing through the actual building and equipping of your yacht.

VALUEWith its rich history and knowledge of the yachting industry, there is a unique value component to Hargrave Yachts that allows them to deliver custom built yachts that are competitively priced with all major new boat builders as well as late model used yachts. If you are value driven, you will recognize it instantly when you finish your VIP tour of a Hargrave.

CUSTOMISATIONFrom the extreme requirements to the more mundane, Hargrave can make the changes that make the difference in achieving complete customer satisfaction. Hargrave build yachts with extra headroom for tall owners; can put your master suite on any deck you prefer; can build yachts suitable for wheel-chair access; and can shift crew areas forward or aft as requested. Hargrave can also adjust the beam and the draft of your yacht to match specific docking requirements. And of course, they can create a custom one-of-a-kind exterior profile with a complete luxury yacht interior, exactly to your tastes.

Following are just a few of Hargrave’s latest masterpieces. Full custom yachts that are beautifully crafted and which stand the test of time ......

HARGRAVE 101 RAISED PILOTHOUSE /OPEN BRIDGE / SKYLOUNGEOne of Hargrave’s most popular designs has been its hugely successful 101’ Series, which is available in Raised Pilothouse, Open Bridge or Skylounge versions. Although every yacht is custom built in terms of exterior styling and custom designed interiors, Hargrave still offers the yacht at a highly competitive price, which is even more astonishing considering that the craftsmanship that goes into this yacht is on a superyacht scale.

One recent 101 launch is the stunning ‘King Baby’, built for an owner who wished to upgrade to a truly custom built yacht. Being 6’ 3”, one of the owner’s requirements was for a yacht with a lot of headroom. Having visited the 6’ 7” pro-football player Jason Taylor’s 99ft Hargrave ‘Katina’, he asked Hargrave how they build their yachts with such good headroom. The reply came quickly – “this is a custom yacht – you can do anything you want”!”

HARGRAVE 114 RAISED PILOTHOUSEThe Hargrave 114 Raised Pilothouse is designed to explore remote exotic locations in absolute comfort. This four or five stateroom yacht is totally custom-built, so whether you like high-gloss cherry woodwork highlighted by gloss camphor burl, or a lighter maple wood all handcrafted by Hargrave’s expert woodworkers, the choice is yours. Outstanding details such as crown mouldings and footed, Georgian-style cabinets with fluted clipped corners are evidence of their artistry.

As you enter the spacious salon, your eyes will be drawn to the subtle colours of the soft furnishings and the texture of the hand-loomed silk/wool carpeting. Below deck are four or five sumptuous staterooms including a full-beam master stateroom furnished in lush fabrics. The crew quarters forward features an en-suite captain’s cabin plus four additional crew berths and head. All are finished to the same high standard as the rest of the boat.

The Hargrave 114 Raised Pilothouse is a wonderful example of Hargrave’s reputation for custom design and superior construction, all for a very competitive price.

Created for those who like to entertain on a grand scale, every room and every design detail has a larger than expected feel to it onboard the Hargrave 125. The combined effect ensures that this luxury yacht has that “wow” factor which knowledgeable upscale owners demand.

With her European styling incorporating full “wrap-around” windows she has luxurious accommodations for 8-12 guests, depending on the chosen layout.

HARGRAVE 125-136 TRI-DECKMany owners believe that building a Tri-Deck superyacht is the realm of the super rich who acquire yachts 50m or more in size. However the fully customized Hargrave Tri-Deck range is available in any size from 115’ - 140’ and at a price that won’t bust the bank!

Boasting a vast amount of on-board space, Hargrave Tri-Deck yachts are often bought by ‘repeat clients’ who truly appreciate the value of Hargraves full custom construction, built at a price comparable to many ‘production’ boats.

On a yacht of this scale, you really can have everything and all in a layout exactly to suit your purposes. Hargrave’s designers are real experts at discussing each clients specific requirements and realising the yacht of their dreams.

So for example if you want an on-board cinema, it’s no problem. Hidden Tender garages, heli-pads, swimming pools, large flybridge - it’s all yours on a Hargrave Tri-Deck.

Oyster introduced the term ‘Deck Saloon’ to the nautical vocabulary and, for more than 25 years, Oyster’s innovative and recognisable deck saloon designs have been refined and developed.

The largest Oyster afloat today is the Oyster 885 whose sales are already well into double figures. The Oyster superyachts, the Oyster 100 and Oyster 125 flybridge by Dubois complement the existing Oyster range.

The largest Oyster in the core range, the new Oyster 885 has been conceived by Oyster to be a perfect solution for those who would like to share the unmatched pleasure of cruising aboard one of these magnificent yachts - with the potential to recover some of the investment involved by chartering. Designed by Rob Humphreys and the Oyster team to the limit of the MCA 24m Load Line Length watershed, the Oyster 885 provides a 4 cabin economic return on space for guests.

Her accommodation of course, is magnificently spacious and attractively fitted out with every luxury and practical live-aboard feature expected on a yacht such as this, as well as quite a few that you might not expect.

In addition to the sumptuous owner’s stateroom there are three very comfortable en suite guest cabins, one of which can be configured as a study or lower saloon area. The accommodation blends seamlessly and stylishly together to provide a real home from home. Since the crew has two cabins and their own galley with mess area, privacy is assured for all guests.

Among the 885’s many attractions are her huge, ergonomically designed split cockpit - perfect for al fresco dining and relaxation on passage - and her spacious, open deck areas, extended by a large hydraulic bathing platform.

The hull of the Oyster 885 is balanced and powerful, with a fairly fine entry that will help the boat cleave through a seaway and, at the same time, the stern is relatively broad to deliver a high level of form stability and an off-wind potential that will rattle away the miles in any Trade Wind passage. The Oyster 885 has a twin rudder configuration and for slick manoeuvring in harbour, she will be fitted with both stern and bow thrusters.

Offered in different layouts of a standard hull and 2 deck moulds - deck saloon and raised saloon versions, the Oyster Yachts custom team in Southampton will build a very personal yacht for each client.

The Oyster 100 by Dubois is designed with the specification, features and classification of very much larger yachts - and provides a sophisticated entry into superyacht ownership.

By contrast, other 100 foot alternatives are simply longer versions of their 60 – 70 foot counterparts. They are built in the same way, are usually of a light displacement and structure, and can give a ride to match – lively with poor load carrying capabilities and little internal volume.

Compare their displacement figures with the Oyster 100, which offers significantly more internal volume, comfort and stability.Comparing the worked materials used in construction reveals a second intersting statistic. Worked materials are loosely defined as structural items that are in some way crafted by specialists such as the hull and deck, interior joinery, engine, generators, indeed, anything that has to be crafted or built rather than just dead weight like the keel.

The Oyster 100 by Dubois is a small ship by comparison!

The standard accommodation layout offers three staterooms aft and two crew cabins forward. The two family/guest staterooms have two large single beds which are fitted on slide rails which can be pushed together to form a large double bed. A third fold down bed is also available.

A raised saloon offers a panoramic view and leads forward and down to a more intimate lounge and separate dining area. Forward of the main living area is the crew mess, galley and two crew cabins.

Flybridge sailing yachts are a relatively new concept and, until the introduction of the flybridge version of the Oyster 125 by Dubois, were to be found only on 48m (160 ft) yachts and above. The Dubois design office already has a number of flybridge yachts on the water, including ‘Tiara’ at 54.3m (178ft) and ‘Kokomo’ at 51.7m (169ft).

With this experience, the Dubois team has been able to finesse the design of the Oyster 125 to capture all the benefits of this concept and match them within a well-balanced, good-looking profile.

This flybridge uses the same superstructure as the Raised Saloon but also offers an upper flybridge with twin helms, lounge, wet bar and sunbathing area.

At approx 200 tonnes lightship displacement, the Oyster 125 by Dubois is a very substantial superyacht, offering a stunning performance in absolute comfort.

Newly on the water, ‘Twilight’, the first Oyster 125 Flybridge by Dubois, has undergone client sailing and acceptance trials in Turkey. This outstanding record-breaking Oyster is a powerful performance cruising yacht and the largest Oyster afloat.

Ed Dubois, Naval Architect for the Oyster Superyachts, said: "We believe that everyone who boards this yacht will be struck by the sense of space, given that she is a 125 foot sloop (38 metres). It was always the intention to maximise the usable space while still retaining a first-class sailing hull form that will be both stiff and sea kindly. The experienced Oyster team in collaboration with RMK, has produced a first class yacht. They are to be congratulated."

‘Twilight’ takes to the water in style.

What is it that someone who has spent a couple of hundred thousand dollars on a luxury yacht charter will remember most when he reminisces about his holidays? The magnificent sunsets? The fabulous water toys – jet skis, maybe even a submersible? The fantastic cuisine served on the finest china, accompanied by only the best wines from glistening crystal decanters? Not if the yacht hasn’t been fitted with stabilizers. The only thing he will remember then is to be more discerning when choosing a yacht to charter, for today there really is no reason to feel seasick either when underway, at anchor or moored in a marina. Shake, rattle and roll is no longer considered standard on larger charter yachts thanks to Quantum Marine, who, as a relatively small company back in 1999, forever changed the yachting world with the invention and implementation of ZeroSpeed™ stabilizers. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength in leading the way to provide a stable environment in which to truly enjoy the experience of luxury yachting – a significant step when you consider that a large amount of time on board these yachts is actually spent either in port or at anchor, a time when you do not want to have to ‘catch’ your glass of wine!

September/October 2013 - Floating ASSET | 237

ZERO SPEED™ Back in 2000, the fitting of ZeroSpeed™ stabilizers was seen as something of an expensive and not necessarily wise or successful cost by many luxury yacht owners. However, the year before, Quantum had worked with a savvy yacht owner who had realised that he could maximise the rental potential of his yacht by adding that something extra – stability – to the list of quality items on board. With a lot of commitment, tweaking and eventual success, the first ZeroSpeed™ stabilizers were an unequivocal triumph and, true to the most successful forms of advertising, word of mouth soon spread the idea that this was the way forward. ZeroSpeed™ stabilizers then became an essential investment, an asset for luxury yacht owners. Existing yachts are now being fitted retrospectively with stabilizers, and it would be unheard of these days for any self-respecting luxury yacht builder not to fit these stabilizers as standard – something to now be taken for granted. In fact, Quantum Marine is proud of having the largest number of ZeroSpeed™ stabilizers installed on new vessels in the mega yacht market. Quantum Marine, though, has not been resting on its laurels since. With a personal commitment to quality, customer service and excellence in manufacturing brought about largely by many of the workforce having personal experience of being onboard large sailing vessels and so knowing what the potential problems are that need solving, the company has continued to innovate with new technology. Not only has the range of yachts that can benefit from ZeroSpeed™ stabilizers been broadened, now ranging from 28 to 164 meters, but new systems have been developed to enhance stability still further.

EQUIPMENT

238 | Floating ASSET - September/October 2013

September/October 2013 - Floating ASSET | 239

XT™ Fin Progress rarely comes without change and modern yacht designs often have a much higher volume hull design and frequently have designed speeds in excess of 20 knots which do not always allow for the successful fitting of existing stabilizer fins, and may in fact add to drag when the yacht is underway. Quantum has risen to this challenge and recently developed a new patented extendable fin – the “XT™ fin” – designed to reduce the fin footprint with extendable foils to stabilize the yacht at anchor, but which can be retracted when underway, thus reducing drag. The positioning of the XT™ fins aft of the shaft causes a much more efficient geometry than before and so is in the best position to deliver the force required for roll damping at anchor. An additional benefit of the XT™ fins is that in some cases, depending on the total area requirements, two fins can be fitted instead of four. There seems to always be more that can be done though.

EQUIPMENT

240 | Floating ASSET - September/October 2013

September/October 2013 - Floating ASSET | 241

MagLift™ Quantum’s latest innovation is the MagLift™ series of rotary stabilizers perfectly suited to high-speed yachts, large sports fishers and several other applications including the military – technology designed to use the “Magnus Effect”, a curious event first observed in the 17th century by Sir Isaac Newton and formalized by Heinrich Magnus. The “Magnus Effect” has been described as the phenomenon whereby a spinning object creates a whirlpool effect around itself, the object experiencing a force perpendicular to the line of motion. The overall behaviour is similar to that around an aerofoil with a circulation which is generated by the mechanical rotation, rather than by aerofoil action. Indeed, the match ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup has been criticised for the different Magnus effect to previous match balls. The ball used was described as having less Magnus effect and as a result flew further but with less controllable swerve. Using this principle, Quantum has invented and patented a completely new cylinder stabilizer that delivers full functionality both underway and at anchor. The MagLift™ systems offer the option of retracting the rotors into the hull for high speed, no drag travel. When deployed, they deliver a level of low-drag performance at slow speeds (3 – 16 knots), a result not achievable when conventional fins are used. However, stabilizer fins use hydraulic power as they require a lot of power to be delivered quickly. With this in mind, Quantum began building its own high-capacity power packs several years ago and the “Integrated Hydraulic Systems”, with the smallest footprint available, greatest flexibility of operation and highest level of redundancy, have earned a reputation for superior quality and reliability.

Since starting out in 1985, Quantum Marine has refused to drag its feet in developing and applying new technology to improve the stability of yachts and thus the comfort factor. Many owners, guests and charterers can now fully enjoy their time on board their luxury yachts, confident in the knowledge that, thanks to Quantum Marine’s innovations since its inception over 35 years ago, they won’t be feeling the negative effects of the motion that used to accompany those on the water. With bespoke electronic controllers and hydraulic power packs perfectly matched to the demands of its own fins or MagLiftTM cylinders, Quantum confidently proclaims: “No One Does It Better”.

Its products, which include toilets, bidets, washbasins, shower trays and sanisplit units are distributed using an international network of authorized distributors, while its after-sale assistance/service network is also global and counts more than 33 countries.Tecma primarily serves the marine market with products that make no compromises in terms of design, quality and price. Tecma is always modern, innovative and ambitious. Married to the latest technology and to the highest quality standards of materials and components Tecma have won several international design awards. Quality control is relentless and uncompromising. With the production of thousands of units annually, Tecma serves all the sanitary installation needs of many stylish vessels around the world. The company has an uncompromising attitude with global fast response to client needs, which brought the company to its leading position. As one would expect from a world leading manufacturer, Tecma offers a wide range of options with its sanitary systems. It is possible to configure differently each Tecma system in order to satisfy every need on board. Each option is the result of a constant research and development activity, often carried out in partnership with the world’s top yacht builders. The result is a truly custom range of options, where Tecma’s clients can specify exactly how they want to configure their system when ordering. Since 2008 Tecma dedicated part of its technical staff to the research and development of advanced electronic devices applied in the working process of sanitary on board systems. One of the most relevant results obtained through this process, is the new “Tecma Touch Panel”, a management system able to offer all the technical performances of the advanced “Tecma Smart Flush” system, together with the functionality and comfort of the modern touch sensitive switches used in domotic.

Tecma Touch Panel controls the flush cycle of the Tecma marine toilets, featured by an elegant minimalist design and an advanced technology enabling an intelligent management of the electrical and hydraulic consumption. The system consists of high tech software able to control all the flushing cycle phases, in order to provide a noiseless and quicker flush when compared to the standard temporized systems available on the market. Extra thin and elegantly designed, the panel is enhanced by an attractive LED blue light, which, through the touch sensitive crystal screen, shows the hidden controls. The touch panel is connected to a hidden controller and, thanks to its compact, elegant and modern look, is ideal to furnish the most luxurious yacht bathrooms, where top quality and design are required. Low water, low electrical consumption and low noise are not the only features offered by the system managed through the Tecma Touch Panel however. The simple and friendly graphic on the 7’’ screen allows the user to easily understand which symbol has to be touched to activate the flushing cycle and to adjust the quantity of inlet water for the desired working mode, ie: “mooring” or “sailing”. The “before use” touch adds water for 12 seconds time only to prevent accidental water overflow. After 12 seconds the system will automatically disable this function, so that it’s impossible to add more water into the bowl. This function is automatically re-enabled after the discharge cycle is started. When the system is set in “mooring mode”, the bowl is automatically refilled with a certain amount of water after the discharge flush, so as to be ready for the next use (as with residential toilets). When the system is set in “sailing mode”, at the end of the discharge flush the bowl will remain completely dry, so to avoid any inconvenience during sailing. ‘The Van’

‘The Van’ seems remarkably big for her length and presents a refreshing perspective on flybridge motoryachts at this size.

This 2012 Sunseeker is a perfect example of the innovative Manhattan 53 range. Although the smallest in the latest Sunseeker flybridge range, the Manhattan 53 still presents spacious entertaining and socialising areas to suit all moods.

Step through the wide, slide-opening doorway into the naturally-lit saloon with its high ceiling and you will appreciate why it is said that the new 53 gives ‘the sense of being on a yacht larger than its labelled size’ and this feeling extends throughout the entire interior.

All cabins are appointed to the high standard expected from Sunseeker, sumptuously designed and fitted.

A Williams jet tender and snorkelling gear add to your enjoyment when exploring the stunning southern French coastline on board this new generation of Sunseeker yachts.

Based in Monaco, she is available for day charters, romantic weekends and extended cruising along the French Riviera.
