4. Curriculum policies (policies for organizing & providing curricula)

The Program for School of Dentistry, which is divided into Liberal Arts Education in the first year and

Specialized Education from the second to sixth years so that students are able to achieve the goals of this Program,

shall develop and provide curricula with the following policies:

・ In the first year, students will acquire an academic foundation by taking Liberal Arts Education Subjects in order

to receive a Specialized Education, and will acquire an interdisciplinary and comprehensive knowledge,

methodology, and perspectives that will enable them to deepen their characters through a broad education and

awareness of the rules necessary for a medical practitioner.

To promote self-motivated learning in particular, in the Liberal Arts Seminar, which offers Problem Based

Learning (PBL), students will acquire foreign language skills and basic communication skills to enable them to

play an active role as an international medical practitioner.

・ From the second to fourth year, starting with the Specialized Education (core subjects: Basic & Clinical Dental

Education), students will acquire the basic knowledge and skills in life science necessary for medical

practitioners, and the expertise and basic clinical skills necessary for dentists. Together with students on the

International Dental Course, students will receive a dental education that will be provided in a Dual Linguistic

Education system in both Japanese and English, and will acquire the basic scholastic abilities to enable them to

play an active role as an international life scientist.

Furthermore, by providing clinical work experience (such as work experience with patients and work

experience on a dental care site) early, this Program enables students to provide patient-oriented dental care, to

form good interpersonal relationships with patients and medical staff members, and to be aware of the diversity of

dental care needs, to acquire a perspective and the knowledge, skills, and attitude required to offer the high quality

dental care sought by citizens. From the latter half of this period, bio-dental education will be provided, and

students will acquire the knowledge and skills (methodology) required to practice dental care (diagnosis and dental

treatment) from a perspective based on life science.

In addition, by providing an education that deepens their understanding of science literacy & research ethics,

and medical ethics respectively in two specialized courses (Course for Frontier Dental Science and Course for

Clinical Dental Science), this Program enables students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitude early on so

that they can play an active role as a bio-dentist based on life science and the latest treatment methods, and to

acquire logical thinking and creative problem-solving abilities required for them to carry on to a graduate school.

・ Providing Common Achievement Tests [Computer Based Testing (CBT) & an Objective Structured Clinical

Examination (OSCE)] before the start of clinical practice for students to exceed the reference standard prescribed

by the School of Dentistry, this Program will guarantee that students will acquire the knowledge, skills, and

attitude to conduct clinical practices as a dentist (dental student), and secure the confidence of the general public.

・ In the fifth and sixth years, the Program provides an Adjacent Medical Education (medical subjects) that enables

students to acquire the comprehensive medical knowledge necessary for dentists. With the start of clinical

practice, students will acquire the comprehensive knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for dentists.

Furthermore, students, as the compilation of dentistry education, will acquire the most advanced knowledge,

problem-solving ability, logical thinking, and lifelong learning ability, as well as advanced dental treatment

Students’ learning outcomes from admission to the current semester will be indicated as one of three levels:

“Excellent,” “Very Good,” and “Good,” based on evaluation criteria calculated by adding the weighted values to

numerically converted evaluations of their academic achievements (S = 4, A = 3, B = 2, and C= 1) in each subject being

evaluated.
