In seven cities, in seven days, to promote education in Poland, everywhere where is even a particle of Polish etnic group.Everyone in Fahrenheit Center, we believe from the very beginning for promoting of study in Poland, our projects have confirmed by the number of young people deciding to study in Poland. Poland has nothing to be ashamed of, not only in the political arena, but it can boast of the achievements of famous graduates of Polish universities.

We believe that the experience gained during the studies in Poland may pay off in later professional life in the United States and Cana-da. We are the proof that the knowledge acquired by us in Poland can be successfully used in the new reality.

studying in PolandA conversation with Kinga Mitrowska, Opera Singer

Kinga Mitrowska, is a well-known opera singer. Her exquisite voice is admired in countries all over the world. She began her musical studies at the Faculty of Theatre in Marianopolis College in Montreal and then trav-eled to Poland, where she graduated with distinction from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. She made her debut, which turned out to be a great success, as Despina in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte, staged by Polish State Opera. She was engaged by the Warsaw State Opera as a solist. Among her roles were: Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème or Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata. During her stay in Poland, she also recorded for the Polish Radio and TV. When she returned to Canada, she continued her acclaimed successes with lead performances with the Toronto Operetta. She also devotes her time to share her knowledge – she con-ducts vocal classes at The Frederic Chopin Music School and in Mavo Academy.

She received many prizes at vocal competitions and festivals. In recognition of her talent, the Academy of Cana-dian Cinema and Television nominated her in 2005 for the 20th Annual Gemini Awards in the Best Performance Category. She was also decorated with the Medal of Merit by the Polish Ministry of Culture for her artistic achieve-ments and Gold Cross Of Merit from the President of Poland. Kinga Mitrowska has never forgotten her Polish roots and is actively participating in the cultural life of the Polish-Canadian community - she was rewarded for propagation of Polish culture in Canada.

3RD MARCH - 10TH MARCHYou graduated from Marianopolis College in Montreal and then from Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. What brought you to the decision to study in Poland? Looking back, was it a good decision for your career? In College I majored in acting and I was planning to pursue an acting career. My plans changed with my visit to Poland. During one of my stays I decided to take a couple of singing lessons. I decided to pay a visit to the Chopin Academy of Music - where else to turn to find a good vocal coach? I was given a list of vocal coaches, and I must say I was very lucky for the coach I chose turned out to be outstanding Profes-sor Kazimiera Golawska. Many of her students went on having careers on stage singing principal roles. Looking back I am happy with the choice I made, there is much you have to take into consideration.

Could you compare Polish and Canadian Music Acade-mies in terms of quality of education provided and overall studying experience? Are there any differences/similari-ties? Do you think Polish schools can compete with those in the USA and Canada?

In comparison, Poland in the field of Opera had much more to offer than here [in Canada]. The program was amazing - we had acting and diction classes, oblig-atory three languages, dancing, style learning about different periods, piano and opera workshops etc. I studied with teachers that had worked with ex-ceptional musicians and artists. Each year audi-tions where held and full Opera performances where staged with students, on the small stage of the Na-tional Opera House in Warsaw. We had the oppor-tunity to work with the best directors, conductors, costume designers. Thanks to one of these produc-tions that I got into, staged by Adam Hanuszkiewicz and conducted by Andrzej Straszynski, I was hired by Teatr Wielki in Warsaw.

What can you tell prospective students who hesitate to come to Poland? Do you have any advice for potential students from USA and Canada?

To students interested in studying in Poland, I would advise to do your homework in regard to your future vocal coach. The voice is a very fragile instrument. There are many other benefits of studying in Poland. You are in Europe, first hand you can experience the rich culture. There are also many voice workshops and competitions. You have much to gain. A conversation with Daniel Domagała, DDS, MS

Daniel Domagała graduated from Silesian Medical University with a degree in dentistry in 2002 and arrived in the US shortly after graduation to begun postgraduate training at Marquette University School of Dentistry in Wisconsin. He holds a certificate of specialty in prosthodontics and a master’s degree in implant prosthetics. His practice is focused on implant, aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry divided between private practice and academics. He hold a position as an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor at the Department of Graduate Prostho-dontics at Marquette University.

Daniel what brought you to the de-cision to come to the USA? How long have you been working there (at what point in your life you decided to go abroad)?

My family immigrated to Chicago in 1989. The decision of whether I stayed in the US or went back to Poland for my professional train-ing was ultimately made by my fa-ther who struggled with his health at the time. I remember how big of a dilemma it was for my par-ents as they both weighed the idea of sending me away, alone, at the age of 18. My father died in Chicago on the 4th of July before I began my second year of dental school. I have returned to the US in 2002, in part because of per-sonal reasons, but mainly, to sat-isfy my professional dreams.

Do you see many differences be-tween Polish and American Universi-ties? Could you compare the quality

of education provided by Polish and American Universities? Do you think Polish Universities can compete with those in the US?

There are many differences in terms of curriculum which makes the comparison difficult. The fair-est comparison would be to look at college combined with dental school in the US vs. dental school and residency in Poland. It takes a total of 7-8 years in the US vs. 6 years in Poland to graduate with a dental degree. When compar-ing to the 7-8 years of education in the US, it would be safe to say that 6 years of dental education, combined with an additional 1-2 years of residency in Poland, pro-duces a dentist who is equally, if not better prepared to treat pa-tients.

And why is that?

In the US model, students spend

3-4 years in college and then only 2 out of their 4 years of dental school is dedicated to clinical training. Res-idency is not mandatory in the US and only 15-20% of all dental stu-dents return for advanced or spe-cialty training. Compare that to the Polish model, dental students are admitted to dental school right out of high school and receive 2-3 years of hands on clinical education, fur-thered by 1 year of general practice residency.

Do you see any advantages (or dis-advantages) over your colleagues who studied in the US?

Dental curriculum in the US is very focused on teeth and most of the schools are not prepared to teach material other than the head and neck. Dental education in Poland is also centered on the mouth and teeth, but what is dif-ferent is that dental students have rotations in internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, oph-

3RD MARCH - 10TH MARCHthalmology, dermatology and just about every aspect of medicine. It is not intended to have dentists treat medical conditions, but the exposure produces better den-tists with a holistic approach.

Do you think your home University in Poland is prepared for admission of foreign students?

Many things have changed since my graduation in 2002, which came ex-actly at the time Poland joined the European Union. I can only speak about my own experience prior to 2002. We did have foreign students and they all did quite well, consid-ering everyone expected them to study in Polish. Most of them got by just fine on a social level, but learning in a foreign language is a challenge in itself. I have been informed that this obstacle has been removed for foreign students and they can now learn in English.

What did you valued most about studying in Poland?

I liked the overall experience. Al-though it took 5 years to gradu-ate and a year of residency, stu-dents have the entire summer to themselves. This was a great time for me to go home to my par-ents who lived in Chicago, work, rest, and prepare for the year to come. In my later years of dental school, I was able to go to sum-mer internships in Chicago, which prepared me for graduate school. Poland is also the place where I met my wife and where we de-cided to spend our lives together. As I know today, it was the best decision of my life.

How about difficulties - In your opin-ion, what can be the hardest obsta-cle for foreign students to overcome while studying in Poland?

Transitioning into a new culture is always a challenge. While some students may adapt better than others, it is difficult to be in a foreign place without the pres-ence of your friends and family. Most people do find this to be a great learning experience and it is something that will stay with them for the rest of their life.

Do you have any advice for potential students from USA and Canada? It is always important to keep an open mind to new experiences and to learn as much as possi-ble from people of different back-grounds than your own. Spending time immersed in a new culture can provide perspective on home and help develop you into a more “well-rounded” person as well as a better dentist.

Krótka historia Związku Nauczycielstwa Polskiego w Kanadzie Początki powstania organizacji zajmujących się polonijną oświatą sięgają lat trzydziestych XX wieku. Pow-stanie Związku Nauczycielstwa Polskiego w Kanadzie w 1962 roku poprzedziła dzialalność różnych orga-nizacji zajmujących się oświatą polonijną. Po ukonstytuowaniu się Kongresu Polonii Kanadyjskiej w roku 1944, szereg członkowskich organizacji, w trosce o polskość nowego pokolenia, powołało do życia sekcje oświatowe. Na Zjeździe Kongresu, w październiku 1960 roku, na przewodniczącą tej Komisji Oświatowej KPK wybrano zawodową nauczycielkę - Marię Bieniasz. Wiosną 1962 roku Komisja Kulturalno – Oświ-atowa Kongresu zwołała zebranie nauczycieli i pracowników oświatowych w Toronto. Powstał Związek Nauczycielstwa Polskiego w Kanadzie. Tego samego roku Związek miał już swój Statut, stał się członkow-ską organizacją Kongresu i rozpoczął nieregularne wydawanie, bardzo skromnego jeszcze, „Biuletynu”. W roku 1963 zwołano I Zjazd Nauczycielstwa Polskiego z udziałem delegatów z Ontario, Quebec, a nawet z dalekiej Alberty. Był to początek tradycyjnych już Zjazdów zwoływanych co 2 -3 lata. Na przestrzeni pięćdziesięciu lat prezesami tej zasłużonej dla polonijnej oświaty w Kanadzie organizacji byli: Maria Bi-eniasz 1962 – 1963, Wojciech Kociok 1963 -1969, Helena Pierzchalska 1969 -1973, Zofia Halek 1973 -1981, Wanda Bujalska 1981 – 1999, Jolanta Kuśmider 1999 – 2007 i od maja 2007 roku do dziś funkcję tę pełni Maria Walicka. Niewątpliwym sukcesem tej organizacji jest „Myśl”, kwartalnik, który nie tylko łączy nauczycieli szkół pol-skich rozsianych na olbrzymiej przestrzeni Kanady, ale również dostarcza wiedzy z dziedziny metodyki, psychologii, pedagogiki i literatury, zawiera konspekty, teksty i materiały do nauczania czy relacje z imprez szkolnych. Najważniejsze jest to, że stanowi on platformę wymiany doświadczeń nauczycieli z różnych terenów. Jednym z bardzo ważnych osiągnięć jest prowadzony do dziś przez Zarząd Główny ZNPwK Konkurs Pisemny na najlepsze wypracowanie w języku polskim. W tym roku zakończyła się już jego 54 edycja. W konkursie tym uczestniczą prawie wszystkie szkoły z całej Kanady. Koszty konkursu w pełni finansuje Fundacja im. Adama Mickiewicza. Kilka lat temu powstał pomysł zainaugurowania Konkursu Czytelnicze-go „Mistrz Pięknego Czytania” dla starszych klas szkoły podstawowej i Konkursu Ortograficznego dla uczniów szkół średnich. Coraz większa popularność obu konkursów wśród uczniów dowodzi, że była to dobra inicjatywa Zarządu Głównego. Wychodząc naprzeciw potrzebom nauczycieli ZG organizuje co roku konferencje metodyczne z udziałem edukatorów i specjalistów-metodyków z Polski. Po kilku latatch przer-wy zainicjowane zostały Dni Polskiej Szkoły w Kanadzie, odbywające się każdego roku pod innym hasłem. Udanym przedsięwzięciem okazała się Szkolna Gala, uroczystość zorganizowana po raz pierwszy w Kon-sulacie RP w Toronto dla najlepszych uczniów polskich szkół, podczas której otrzymali piękne dyplomy i nagrody, a także listy gratulacyjne od premiera Kanady wręczone każdemu uczniowi przez Władysława Lizonia, posła do Parlamentu polskiego pochodzenia. Oddanie i pasja, z jaką pracują nauczyciele naszego ojczystego języka w Kanadzie pozwalają z optymizmem patrzeć w przyszłość i mieć nadzieję, że jeszcze długie lata język polski, nasze tradycje i prawdziwa historia naszej Ojczyzny będą żywe w Kraju Klonowego Liścia.

Historical Europe - a program for the youth of Canada and the United States.During the 30 days you will have the opportunity to see the history and culture of some countries like Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The trip begins in the capital of Warsaw, Poland. From there we travel south to Krakow and Prague, Czech Republic’s bohemian al-lure. From the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, we will then go to Vienna, Austria named “the city of dreams.” Venice, Rome, Genoa, and a visit to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa will be spent in Italy. Heading north we will visit Paris, France in all its splendor. Heading east, we will go through Brus-sels, Belgium where the European parlia-ment is located. The next city is Amsterdam, Netherlands with its many canals coursing through the city. In Berlin, Germany you’ll see remnants of post WWII and communistic rule. The trip will be completed in Gniezno, the first capital of Poland.

Many of these countries’ historical elements are preserved in their major cities like Prague, Bratislava, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Pisa, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, Warsaw, and Krakow. Each city holds beautiful cathedrals, castles and museums.

Apart from the sightseeing this trip is wonderful for the integration of young people from North America and review of all the European cultures. This tour is hosted by the Polonia Ambassadors, but we invite young people without Polish origin to create a link between people wanting to know the history of Europe.For many it will be a wonderful adventure. Do you feel up for it?

In each country we will stay for 2-3 days to explore the capital city and its attractions.

In Vilnius you will go back to the history of Polish-Lithuanian union. The Treaty of Riga and its consequences will be announced in the capital of Latvia - Riga. Visit Tallinn in Estonia and the Estonian Parliament in the old castle of Toompea. In St Petersburg, Russia you will step in the footsteps of the royal Romanovs. Exploring Scandinavia, we will start in Fin-land and its capital Helsinki. The next stop is Stockholm-Sweden’s capital, where you will know the Polish - Swedish relations throughout history. To meet the Vikings you will have to go to Norway. Over the spectacular Norwegian fjords listen to the music of Edvard Grieg. The tour will finish in Denmark, and more specifically after a visit to the famous Le-goland.

Studies in EnglishApplicants are expected to have excelled in basic science cours es in physics, chemistry, biology, math-ematics and English. The academ ic year formally starts on the 1st of October and is divid ed into two five-month terms (semesters), including examination sessions. The student must successfully complete all of the course work of one academic year, before be-ing approved for promotion to the next year.
