La critica lo ha descritto come un Robert Johnson bianco, un mu-sicista che dà giustizia ai classici blues combinando il suono della sua chitarra e dell’armonica alle sue espressività vocali e ad una dignitosa presenza scenica.

Nel primo periodo della sua carriera lo ricordiamo con la chitarra e l’armo-nica al collo mentre reinterpreta i classici degli anni ’30 – ’40 e ’50 ed ora, dopo una grande esperienza alle spalle, ha dimostrato di essere anche un ottimo leader che suona meravigliosamente la chitarra elettrica, le cui prove possiamo trovare in Found True Love e Got Love if You Want it (entrambi dell’etichetta Pointblack / Virgin).

Nato il 13 novembre 1942 a New York, figlio del famoso talent scout John Hammond Sr della Columbia Records, la cosa che nessuno sa è che non è cresciuto con il padre; ancora piccolo i genitori si separano e lui riuscirà a vedere il padre solo dopo molti anni.Inizia a suonare la chitarra molto presto e rimane particolarmente impressio-nato dalla tecnica dello slide quanto dal concerto dal vivo del suo idolo Jimmy Reed al Apollo Theater.Prima di entrare al college decide di prendersi un anno di pausa per dedicarsi alla carriera di musicista così, attraverso la rinascita della folk music degli anni ’60, viene attratto dal circuito dei coffehouse esibendosi nella tradizione del classico country-blues che lui adora. All’età di 20 anni, prima di esibirsi ad un festival del East Coast, viene intervistato dal New York Times venendo così certificato nazionalmente.

Nel 1966 incontra un giovane Jimi Hendrix, arrivato nel suo paese in cerca di lavoro, al quale propone di mettere insieme una band iniziando così ad esibirsi regolarmente al Cafe Au Go Go, ed è proprio qui che la situazione cambia sostituendo le sessions e la chitarra elettrica con il folk-rock. Proprio durante questo periodo Hendrix viene avvicinato da Chas Chandler che lo porta con sé in Inghilterra per realizzare un disco, ritornando poi, un anno dopo, su richiesta di Hammond per realizzare Chandler Up “Quando lo rin-contrai dopo un anno era già un grande star in Europa”.

Durante gli anni ’60 e ’70 continua a suonare e collaborare con grandi artisti quali Robbie Robertson (e altri membri della Band quando erano ancora co-nosciuti come Levon Helm & The Hawks), Duane Allman, Dr John, Charlie Musselwhite, Michael Bloomfield e David Bromberg.

I suoi album mostrano perfettamente le sue abilità: dall’album del debutto per l’etichetta Van-guard (ora rimasterizzato su Cd) ad altri lavori incluso I Can Tell (registrato con Bill Wyman dei Rolling Stones), Southern Fried (1968), Source Point (1970, Columbia) e i più recenti degli anni ’90 per la Pointblack/Virgin Records, Got Love If You want it, Trouble no More (entrambi prodotti da J.J. Cale), Found True Love e l’ultimo lavoro Rough & Tought.

Durante la sua carriera riceve ben 8 Blues Music Awards e 10 nominations: vincitore, nel 1985, del Grammy per la performance in Blues Explosion (compilation del Montreux Jazz festival), riceve una nomina nel 1993 per l’album Got Love if you want it, nel 1994 per Trouble no More, nel 1998 per Found True Love, nel 1999 per Long As I have You, nel 2002 vince il premio come “Best Acoustic Album” per Wicken Grin prodotto per Tom Waits, nel 2003 e 2004 come “Best Acoustic Blues artist”, nel 2006 riceve una nomina per In Your Arms Again e nel 2010 come “Best Traditional Blues Album” per Rough & Tough e nel 2011 è vincitore del Blues Music Award come “Acoustic Artist of the Year” e l’inserimento, nello stesso anno, nel Blues Hall of Fame.

Restando uno dei più premiati artisti acustici, nonchè un instancabile performer, basti pensare che ha alle spalle ben 4000 concerti solo dal 2008, Hammond continua le sue annuali e intermi-nabili tourneè collaborando con grandi artisti quali Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, JJ Cale, Tom Waits, The Band e John Lee Hooker.



Non lo sapeva quando aveva 20 anni e probabilmente non se ne rende an-cora conto ma Hammond ha portato a termine un compito molto speciale: mantenere vivi molti dei classici brani blues. Durante i suoi concerti, come Dr. John ha sottolineato molte volte osservando anche altri artisti, i fans spesso vogliono sapere di chi sono i pezzi originali che vengono esibiti.Sebben sia un poliedrico artista, Hammond non ha mai professato di esse-re un compositore. All’inizio della sua carriera la cosa più importante per lui era portare questa forma d’arte al pubblico rivisitando pezzi classici spesso dimenticati. Ora, ben 30 anni dopo, continua a farlo esibendosi attraverso l’America, il Canada e l’Europa.Sia che sia da solo o con la sua band può fare di tutto, mentre si esibisce sembra che questo energetico bluesman continui a dare il meglio di sé.
