Prayer for the week

Heavenly Father, please be with all those students who are about to take mock and public exams, please help them to be calm and confident. Amen

As part of offering regular readers a different view and perspective on our life and work at St George’sI have handed this week’s ‘Head’s Piece’ over to Mr Cullis, who offers the following insights.

“Sir, their teachers just teach”. I was speaking to two year 10 students on Tuesday night at the Duke ofEdinburgh meeting about their recent experience on the German exchange. “The students inGermany just go to school, have lessons, two break times and then go home for lunch; they don’t haveany tutor base, clubs or house events”. This brief conversation has really made me pause and thinkabout what it is we do at St George’s. This is not the moment to discuss the pros and cons of differenteducation systems but it makes me realise how much more there is to our jobs here than teaching, and actually I am really glad of that.

Only this week in addition to the German exchange trip and the Duke of Edinburgh meeting we havehad three house events involving students from every year group: photography, swimming and quiz

News and Events

(not all at the same time, though that would solve some scheduling issues next year...). There havealso been off site trips for boarding students, a briefing evening for the Geography trip to the LakeDistrict, an information evening for Year 7 parents and countless enrichment opportunities forstudents at lunchtime and after school and this isn’t even a ‘big’ week. I am always encouraged byhow keen our students are to get involved and try new things, by their curiosity and sense ofadventure. Equally I am profoundly grateful that we have a staff made up of people willing to go theextra mile and give up their own time to plan and run such opportunities for our young people. I don’tunderestimate the work, energy and good will that go into this.

We are so thankful for all the teachers, parents and volunteers who give so much to make St George’sthe wonderful place it is.

In other news, as I peruse my Teach Secondary magazine (#Ineedtogetoutmore) I read aboutcrumbling school buildings, growing stress levels and swathing cuts to the education budget. Thereport from Parliament's National Audit Office (NAO) https://www.nao.org.uk/report/financialsustainabilityinschools/?utm_source=BCmagma&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Newsletter28th April 2017 is very stark. Although the DfE are correct in saying that the total education budget hasrisen, they omit to say that the number of pupils has also risen and is continuing to rise. As a result, the realterm funding per pupil has fallen and will continue to fall (together with unfunded extra costsof 8% by 2020). The challenges faced by all in education are very real and I am acutely aware that ourteachers are ever more stretched. We are blessed at St George’s to have a tireless and successfulPSA who alongside the generosity of the Cecil Grant Founder’s Trust are able to provide in so manyways for our school. I know so many of you support us in this way. Please know that this is invaluableand very much appreciated. I am alarmed to see in my magazine just how many schools are having todrop subjects from their GCSE curriculum and the alarming rate at which some subjects are becoming‘endangered’. We are extremely pleased that we have been able to offer all of our planned GCSEoption subjects next year. This means that alongside the core curriculum of English, Maths, Scienceand Religious Education, students are able to study Art, Business Studies, Drama, Economics,French, Food Technology, Geography, German, Graphics, History, Music, Resistant Materials, PE,Spanish, Triple Science and Textiles.

Have a wonderful long weekend, I intend to finish my exciting magazine (there is a fascinating articleabout using rap battles to teach Thermodynamics: 10S1 watch out!) Do spare a thought for thestudents and staff on the Zambia and Botswana training weekend in the New Forest, I see it's going tobe 4 degrees on Saturday morning. God bless.
