What Is It Like AroundMy Community, MyCountry, My World?
Every day, in textbooks, newspapers, and TV, studentsexplore their world. They experience their communityon foot, by bicycle, by bus, and by car. They collect databy sidewalk and streamside, download videos from theInternet, and gather information from sources far and wide.Managing this great wealth of data calls for a geographicinformation system (GIS).
A GIS manages location-based information and providesthe tools to display and integrate it, whether its populationcharacteristics, economic develop-ment opportunities, or vegetationtypes. GIS is more than computermaps: it gives you the power to linkdata to maps to create dynamicdisplays. It provides tools to visualize, query, and analyze data in ways notpossible with traditionalspreadsheets.
You dont need to teach geography touse GIS. History teachers can watch a regionchange over time. Science teachers canenhance local projects with interactive maps.Numbers come alive when they represent a realplace and can be manipulated in a GIS. Lan-guage arts teachers can explore the richness ofcommunication with multimedia GIS. And all
classes become vocational in nature when students develop skillssought by the adult world.
GIS helps students and teachers understand their world. In theirschoolwork, students can use GIS to bring value to the com-munity. Everyone benets when students catalog communityresources, help businesses market their products, or dene alter-native views of the land. Working with businesses, agencies, orresearchers, students can use GIS to display the complex fabricthat is our community and our world. GIS is a tool for study-ing the world and all that is, was, or could be in it at a local, regional, or global level.

Geographic Data Choices
Spatial data about many subjects is available from public agencies and commercial data providers. ESRI distributes starting data withArcView software. Additional data can be downloaded or even used on the y from the vast repositories on the Internet such as theGeography Network SM (www.geographynetwork.com ).
ArcView also provides tools for creating your own digital map features, building tabular databases, and integrating imagery. Students can
create statistical data from sources such as the daily newspaper, annual reports, or their own eld research with global positioning system(GPS) units. They can join new information to existing geographic shapes such as countries, state outlines, or GPS points.

ArcViewDesktopSoftware for Making Mapsand Analyzing Data
ArcView software is a tool for geographic inquiryaskingquestions and nding answers through interactive speculation(query building) and visualization (display). As an interactivegeographic tool, ArcView allows people to
Visualize data as maps.
Design simple to sophisticated what-if scenarios in the formof database and map queries.
Display the results of queries in the form of maps, charts, and tables.
Perform basic statistical analysis and spreadsheet functions.
Join data from outside sources to existing geographic data.
Create and edit datageographic and statistical.
Link photos, video, text, and graphics to specic locations forcomplete multimedia presentations.
Design and print map, chart, table, and graphic images.
Export maps, graphs, and tables into other software packages.
Customize activities and user interfaces.

ArcView for Schools Bundle
The ArcView for Schools Bundle permits installation of ArcViewsoftware and data on computers across a K12 school campusfor instructional use and on teachers home computers. Includedwith the software are instructional materials and a rich set of GISdata.
ArcExplorer ArcExplorerJava Edition for Education is a lightweight toolthat lets students and teachers explore data and create, save, and share projects. Content can be local, regional, or global andeven include data directly from the Internet.See www.esri.com/arcexplorer .
ArcVoyager ArcVoyager software is designed to help students begin navi-gating the world of maps, geography, and geographic inquirythrough the use of GIS. ArcVoyager is a customized version ofArcView 3 that includes special mapping and analysis tools, abroad collection of data tailored for classroom use, a completeonline help system, and classroom lessons.Visit www.esri.com/arcvoyager .

With ArcGIS Spatial Analyst you can
Produce contour, slope, aspect, and hillshade maps. Create continuous surfaces from scattered point features. Create buffers based on distance from feature or grid themes. Perform cell-based map analysis. Query and perform calculations
on multiple grid themessimultaneously.
Convert feature themesto grid themes.
Import data from standard formats.
ArcGIS Publisher and ArcReader
ArcGIS Publisher adds easy map publication capabilities toArcGIS. Use Publisher to create published map les (.pmf)from any ArcMap document (.mxd). Published maps canbe viewed using any ArcGIS Desktop product including theno-cost ArcReader application, allowing you to freely shareyour maps with a wide range of users. This approach enablesGIS users to publish and share data and maps locally, overnetworks, and on the Internet, allowing multiple users toview and interact with maps simultaneously.
See www.esri.com/publisher andwww. esri.com/arcreader .
With ArcGIS Publisher you can
Easily provide interactive maps to others Protect your maps including car-
tography and data Provide efcient and controlled
access to your GIS data Easily package the required data
and maps for distribution Build custom versions of ArcReader
for your viewing audience
With ArcGIS 3D Analyst you can
Create three-dimensional views. Analyze three-dimensional data. View your data from a global to local perspective. Navigate seamlessly through multiresolution terrain data. Perform spatial analysis in two or three dimensions. Visualize modeling or analysis
results in three dimensions. Use three-dimensional models and
symbols for realism. Export your visualizations into
videos.
ArcGIS Spatial Analyst
The ArcView Spatial Analyst extension provides a broadrange of powerful spatial data modeling and analysis tools
seamlessly integrated into the ArcView environment. This extension allows you to create, visualize, and query cell-based raster data and combine vector and raster data fordisplay and analysis. Raster data is well suited to representcontinuous data and surfaces. Potential uses of the ArcViewSpatial Analyst extension include terrain analysis, costdis-tance mapping, visibility analysis, or hydrologic modeling.See www.esri.com/spatialanalyst .
ArcGIS 3D Analyst
ArcView 3D Analyst
allows you to visualize and analyzesurface data from multiple viewpoints, query a surface, determine visibility, create a realistic perspective image thatdrapes raster and vector data over a surface, and record orperform three-dimensional navigation. The ArcGlobe appli-cation (part of the 3D Analyst extension for ArcGIS) allowsuse of extremely large sets of three-dimensional geographicdata and seamless interaction with any data layers on athree-dimensional globe.See www.esri.com/3danalyst .
Additional Extensions are available for the ArcGIS suite

ArcIMS
ArcIMS is the foundation for distributing GIS data andapplications on the Internet or Intranet. It combinesinteractive, Web-based maps with a highly scalableserver architecture. Wizards and templates simplifyimplementation and administration. ArcIMS features anopen and interoperable environment that can access Webdata and data stored on your computer simultaneously fordisplay in a simple browser interface.See www.esri.com/arcims .
ArcGIS StreetMap
ArcView StreetMap provides data for street-levelgeocoding and display for the entire United States ona single CDROM. The CD includes data for streets, landmarks, water bodies, political boundaries, and otherfeaturesall with ready-made legendsto producea complete map out of the box. Using this addressinformation and the geocoding engine of ArcView, youcan locate a single address on a map interactively orturn a list of addresses into a new map layer.See www.esri.com/streetmap .
With ArcIMS you can
Serve maps for display onthe Internet or Intranet.
Add mapping tools(Pan, Zoom, Find) to the viewer.
