Great news!

1 Read the interview and write the question in the correct place. What things were better in the past?

What were schools like when you went?

What things are better now than in the past?

What was the world like when you were little?

What things didn’t exist when you were growing up?

What things are different now from when you were young?

NINA: Well, Gran, thanks for agreeing to do this interview for our school magazine! GRAN: That’s okay, although I don’t know what I’ll be able to tell you.N: Well, I’ll just ask you a few questions about things you remember about the past.

So let’s begin with this one: (a)

G: Oh! What a difficult question! Erm, there was no TV, there were very few cars, no computers, no holidays, and not so much food as nowadays!

N: (b)

G: Oh! There’re so many things that aren’t the same now. There are so many young people doing so many wonderful things. In the past it was only the older people who had responsibilities.

N: (c)

G: Well, the teachers, for example, they were all quite old and some of them were very strict. I think teachers are nicer now, and school seems to be much more fun!

N: Oh, yes, it is! And (d)

G: Well, what I have just said about young people is one thing that’s better. And the opportunities that women have these days; that’s an improvement. It was very hard for women when I was young.

N: And (e)

G: Oh, it was quieter, certainly, and not as busy — everyone these days is always in a hurry. In my village the people were friendlier.

N: So, finally, (f)

G: It was, well, it was just the world we lived in. But it was definitely more romantic …sometimes when I think of the past, everything is in black and white, like the old films.

N: Thanks, Gran, that’s fantastic. My teacher will love my interview!

2 Answer the questions.a What’s Nina doing the interview for? b What does Gran think of the first question? c Who had all the responsibilities in the past? d What were teachers like in the past? e What was life like for women when Gran was young? f Where did Gran live? g How does Gran sometimes remember the past? h Is Nina happy with her interview?

What things didn’t exist when you were growing up?

For her school magazine.

Telling the future

1 Read the texts quickly. Are these sentences true (T) or false (F)?a You should throw the dice on Tuesdays. b You should multiply the numbers on the dice. c Think of a question while you put the dice in the cup. d Numerology is a modern invention. e Numerology can only be used to tell the future. f The day you are born is important in numerology.

The magic dice! For this ancient Chinese method of telling the future, you need two dice, a cup, a piece of paperand a pen. Never throw more than once in a week, and avoid throwing on a Monday orWednesday. First, draw a circle with the same diameter as two hands on a piece of paper. Next, think of aquestion about something you would like to happen in the future. Place the dice in a cup andthrow them into the circle. Be careful what you ask! Now calculate the sum of the dice inside thecircle and read their answer in the key below. Do not count dice that fall outside the circle. Now ask the dice a question!

NumerologyThe ancient Egyptian study of numbers can be used to tell the future and to discover people’spersonality. First you have to calculate your birth number. Add the individual digits of your birthdate (month/day/year) then, take the double digit total and add the individual numbers to equalyour birth number. For example, if your birthday was 24/12/1990, your calculation would be:

24+12+1+9+9+0=55

Now add 5+5=10

Finally 1+0=1

That is the birth number for the above birth date. (Don’t forget, yours will be different.)Now use the number to find out about your personality!
