    Editorial

We often hear people saying 'Time flies'... well it seems as if it was only

yesterday that we welcomed the year 2019 in the Gurdwara and wished every

one of the Sangat, a very happy and successful new year; now here we are

again ready to say adieu to this year 2019 and welcome the new one.

Probably this is how life goes, time does seem to have wings!

Like a steady stream, the flow of Life always keeps going whether we like it or

not, whether it feels comforting or challenging. Whatever the circumstances

may be, life goes on and time really flies.

We may experience this phenomenon from another perspective. As in Gurbani

all of Creation exists in cycles of motion that constantly change their state.

Change is inherent in Waheguru's Hukam. Here on Earth, over time, land is

replaced by oceans and water reservoirs are replaced by dry land. Mountains

disappear and dry deserts give way to fertile land. In the same way life itself

changes. All humans, animals, birds and plants grow through life stages to

reach maturity. Eventually, life here comes to an end and enters its next cycle,

in accordance with His Hukam. Ultimately the entire Creation ends, to be

    renewed once again.

Lord Tennyson, in one of his poems ‘Passing of King Arthur’ writes

'The old order changeth, yielding place to new,

And God fulfils himself in many ways,

Lest one good custom should corrupt the world'.

Good or bad everything must change. Now is the time to say goodbye to the

year 2019 and we heartily welcome 2020, the New Year. We wish all the

members of the Gurdwara Sangat a Happy, Healthy and a Prosperous new

year. May Waheguru grant everyone all the goodness on earth, together with

health, education, prosperity and fulfil all their aspirations and ambitions. May

all the students excel in their educational attainments and bring credit to their

parents, community and the Sangat. May God bless every one with peace.

And we pray that the entire world may have the Happiest NEW YEAR 2020.

    May God bless you all.

Divine knowledge should be your holy food, compassion and charity your

store house and divine music that prevails in every heart should be your

Singi Naad. He is the Supreme Chief, creator and preserver of the entire

world. The control and command of magical powers and wealth is

different from devotion. These are useless and may lead one astray. All

the happenings in the world are carried out by union and separation or

attraction and repulsion. The mortal gets his share according to his

Maya the memon bore three sons who decide the fate of the mortals. The

three conduct the work of the universe as it pleases the Lord. He is the

real director. It is amazing that God beholds everyone but Himself

remains invisible. I salute Waheguru again and again. He is primal and

pure, without beginning. Who cannot be destroyed and who remains alike

    in all the times.

Bani of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Gurbani is the divine knowledge that flows from the oneness of Satguru’s ‘jot’, or Soul, and the omnipresent Akal Purakh ‘Waheguru’. When the Guru’s jot merges with the Paramjot, their duality disappears; both become one in spirit. All that is then perceived by the Guru in this oneness state is called ‘Gurbani’.

  • Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Hounslow 7

Gurbani words are not of the Guru’s own mind or wisdom, but what is gifted to him by the Lord, for the Guru to convey to the Sangat. He does this in the form of verses. The knowledge contained therein is eternal Truth and as such is the Shabad. These are words of purity and spirituality. Guru Nanak has made it clear, in his various compositions, that the motivation for revealing the Bani comes to him directly from the Lord. Enlightened by Akal Purakh, the spiritual knowledge that Guru Nanak ji has been blessed with is expressed in many of his compositions, including: Japji, Shalok, Sodar, Asa-di-var, Rehras, Sohila, Arti, Sidh Gosht, Paihre, Patti and Barah Maha. Music being a key part of the message, Guru Sahib composed all his Bani (except his magnum opus ‘Japji’) in no less than 19 musical Rags.

    Japji

The Japji is widely accepted as the epitome of Guru Nanak’s teachings. It covers all aspects of spirituality in its 38 Pauris or stanzas. The word ‘Jap’ means to ‘recite’ or ‘to ‘chant’ this truthful path to attain the grace of Waheguru. The japji has the first place in the Guru Granth Sahib, where it is preceded by the Sikh credal statement, the Mool Mantar. It is said to have been uttered by Guru Nanak after his mystical experience in the river Bein at Sultanpur. It is essentially a statement about God, His one-ness, eternal Truth, Creator, Timeless and Immortal. The Japji explains the Mool Mantar, and in turn, the entire Guru Granth Sahib can be said to be an elucidation of the Japji. The stanzas of the Japji challenge false rituals, practices, blind recitations and instead highlight Waheguru as the One Unknowable, Infinite, Creator and Ultimate Truth. The Japji is entirely consistent with science. For instance, it taught the existence of countless worlds and planets, way ahead of its time. Many have attained the Grace of God by embracing its message. It is indeed the most important prayer for the Sikhs, many recite it every morning during the ambrosial hours of dawn.

    Shalok

Japji concludes with the Shalok that the human body is a product of air, water and earth. Guru Nanak compared air to Guru, because air gives life to the body, as Guru is to the life of the Soul. Water is the father, as water nourishes plants and nature. The earth sustains living beings in creation, and is vast in

extant, having qualities which characterise the mother. Night and Day nurse us with Love, while the winds fan us with a gentle breeze. Our actions will be judged after death, and determine whether we are near or far from Waheguru. One who meditates on Naam will enjoy everlasting bliss in union with the Lord. He will be liberated, and countless others, with him.

    Sodar

The Door, though which one can enter the inner spiritual regions. This has been called Sodar by Guru Nanak ji, because the spiritual journey commences from this point, through which one enters the great mansion. From here a panoramic view is surveyed and one can hear the music of the world below ‘Anhad Shabad’. The angels too are seen engaged in the adoration of the Lord. One's vision is enlarged, events of the present and future can be acquired with the ability to prophesy. The entire activity of the universe, with the movements of the stars and the planets, seem like an orchestra. All move accordingly to the Lord’s Will, who controls all that happens in the cosmos. He is seen as the king of kings.

    Rehras

Rehras is a part of the evening prayer of the Sikhs. There are two hymns composed by Guru Nanak. In the first hymn he says although all men speak of God’s greatness, only he who speaks from personal experience knows His greatness. For all others He remains inconceivable and indescribable. Even the theologians and preaches have been unable to grasp one jot of His greatness. Guru Nanak says that good deeds and achievements are His gifts, and nothing can stand in the way of one seeking perfection from God when His grace has been attained. In the second Hymn, Guru Nanak says, in remembering Him, there is life, and in forgetting Him there is death. He is the essence of the devotee’s life, yet it can be very hard to contemplate on His name. In the strong desire for the Lord’s name, all suffering is dissolved. God’s Name can never be adequately praised, whosoever tried grew tired, and could not weigh its true worth. Even with joint effort he would neither grow greater nor lesser by their praise.

He is beyond birth, death and suffering. God has an inexhaustible store of gifts. The greatest of all wonders is that there never was, nor ever will be, One like Him.

    Sohila

  • Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Hounslow 9

The Sohila ‘Song of Praise’ contains two of Guru Nanak’s hymns. It is the last prayer of the day, recited at bedtime. In the first hymn the emphasis is that man is to mediate on the Lord whilst living to attain everlasting bliss; for the Lord resides within. The Lord watches and looks after His creatures, and no-one can assess His greatness or set a price on His gifts. According to Guru Nanak the moment of death is the happiest time of one’s life. It has been compared to the wedding day, when the bride (the soul) is united with the bridegroom (the Lord) as the call of death is not far. In the second hymn, there is elucidation of the six schools of thought; each gives its own viewpoint, yet all are aspects of the one reality - the Lord that rules over all of them is One. Guru Nanak has compared the Divine knowledge to the sun, and the six schools of thought to the seasons, which are all products of the sun. The Arti Bani of Guru Nanak appears in the Sohilla as:

    ਕਿੈੀ ਆਰਤੀ ਹਏੋ || ਭਵ ਖੂੰਡਨਾ ਤਰੇੀ ਆਰਤੀ || (SGGS Ang 835)

    Arti

This is the bedtime prayer of the Sikhs. It is traditionally believed that it was composed at Jagan Nath Puri by Guru Nanak, during their Arti ceremony, performed with lamp waving and candle lights on salvers among scattered pearls. Guru Nanak draws their attention to the beauty of nature. Guru ji compares the sky to the salver, the sun and the moon to the bright lamps and the stars to the pearls scattered in the Salver; the fragrance of the sandalwood forest is the incense, and the breeze blows the royal fan in service to the Lord. The flowers of the forest lie as offerings at His feet. What a wonderful worship of the Lord this is!

Above all, the melody of the unstruck sound is reverberating everywhere. Although the Lord has no eyes, ears, or shape, yet He sees and hears everything and pervades everywhere. The cosmos is His play and Guru Nanak was bewitched by it. The light that illuminates every heart is His light. But this light only becomes manifest through the Guru's teachings. The best Arti is that which pleases the Lord. Guru Nanak ends by saying he

yearns for the Lotus feet of the Lord, like the honey bee that collects the nectar

of flowers or the rain bird that drinks only raindrops, even if the vast ocean be

    spread before him.

Sources of Guru Nanak Dev ji's Travels (Udasiyaan)

The major sources of Guru Sahib's travels are stated below. Written

independently, they contain variations in content with regard to the places

visited, the events encountered (as narrated in the sakhis) and the relevant

    dates.

The start date of the first odyssey can be reliably fixed at close to CE1500

based on Guru ji's association with Daulat Khan who received his appointment

in that year or very soon afterwards. This means that Guru Sahib was of age

around 31. The second date that we can reliably fix is 1520 when Guru Sahib

encountered Babur's destruction of Saidpur (Eminabad). In all the Udasi sakhiyaan, the matter of substance is the essential spiritual

message being conveyed by Guru Nanak Dev ji. We accept each sakhi itself

as only a vehicle for conveying the underlying karmic or spiritual message.

Bhai Gurdas: Bhai Gurdas ji was in the personal court of Guru Arjun ji. He

also had a close association with Baba Buddha ji who regularly met Guru

    Sahib in person at Kartarpur.

Bala Janam Sakhis: Bhai Bala’s Janam Sakhis believed to have been created

in 1540 by Bhai Bala, the personal companion of Guru

Nanak ji. Many sakhis are usually from this source.

Puratan Janam Sakhis: Meaning old stories, Puratan

or Hafizabad or Wilayatwali Janam Sakhi dated 1635.

This book was taken by an Englishman named Cole

Brooke to England. Most of the Sikh historians have

drawn references from this book. A page is shown here.

Meherban Janam Sakhis. Manohar Das Meharban’s

Janam Sakhis, dated 1650, were written by him as the

son of Prithi Chand, eldest brother of Guru Arjan Dev.

Some scholars say his janamsakhis, quite similar to the Puratan Janamsakhis,

were written even before Bhai Gurdas composed his Vars.

Bhai Mani Singh Janam Sakhis: Written in the 1700's. The fourth and

evidently the latest is the Gyan-Ratanavali, attributed to Bhai Mani Singh who

wrote it with the intention of correcting inaccurate accounts of Guru Nanak Ji.

Note. Other less well known Sakhis also exist, written from 1711 to 1797.

Being the work of devotees, the Sakhis do contain stories miraculous in

nature. Guru Sahib however did not encourage the working of miracles.

Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji (1630 -1661)

Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib was grandson of the sixth guru,

Guru Hargobind Sahib and son of Baba Gurditta ji and

Mata Nihal Kaur. He was born at Kiratpur Sahib on 30th

January 1630. By nature he was very kind hearted. He

always kept his cloak wrapped up, lest he should

damage the flowers in the garden. He had an elder

brother, namely Dhir Mal who was not selected by Guru

Hargobind sahib to be the Guru because he was too

involved in worldly affairs. Similarly all the four sons of

Guru Hargobind Sahib were surpassed and Har Rai was nominated as the

seventh guru on 3rd March 1644, after the demise of Guru Hargobind Sahib.

As per the wishes of his grandfather Guru Sahib kept a contingent of 2,200

cavalry as his personal guard. During his lifetime, he took the most important

strategic decision to steer the Sikh community into a period of consolidation,

    avoiding any major battles.

He used to go on hunting expeditions but notably, instead of killing the

animals, he would capture them alive and bring them home to look after them

in his sanctuary. It has been remarked that Guru Sahib probably started the

earliest known zoo in the world (the oldest, 'Vienna Zoo', in Austria was

    founded in1752).

Guru Har Rai paid special attention to the propagation of Sikhi. He always

urged people to involve themselves in Naam Japna, Sangat Sewa and sharing

with the needy. He sent missionaries around the country, such as Suthray Shah

to Delhi, Bhagat Bhagwan to the East and Bhai Pheru to Rajasthan.

He organised a high quality dispensary and catered suitable remedies to the

Sikhs and even animals. When the Mughal emperor Shah Jehan's eldest son

Dara Shikoh became seriously ill, Guru Har Rai sent a herbal medicine which

cured him. He also helped him to escape when he was being chased by the

army at the behest of Aurangzeb, although he was finally killed by the latter.

  • Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Hounslow 13

Prompted by the opponents and his courtiers, Aurangzeb summoned Guru Har

Rai ji to attend his Darbaar. Guru ji was aware of the crookedness of Aurangzeb

and wisely sent his son Ram Rai to meet the emperor. Before he left, Ram Rai

was instructed by Guru Sahib not to engage in any miracles and not to allow

the teachings of the Sikhs to be compromised in any way. However in sharp

contrast to this, Baba Ram Rai at Delhi tried to appease Aurangzeb by showing

miracles and twisting the text of Gurbani. It is said he performed more than 52

miracles like bringing a dead goat to life and showing stars in daylight. Worst

of all, he compromised Guru Granth Sahib by reading

saying that Guru Nanak Dev Ji's bani had been incorrectly written by the scribe.

Though he gained Aurangzeb's friendship, his own father Guru Har Rai ji, on

learning what his son had done, was deeply hurt. The Guru exclaimed, "Ram

Rai was a worthy successor to the Gurgaddi.. Now Ram Rai shall never see my

face again." Ram Rai indeed never saw his father again but maintained his

    friendship with Aurangzeb.

Thus by barring his elder son from Gurgaddi, Guru Har Rai ji maintained the

sanctity of Gurgaddi and rose high above the family or closeness of

    relationship.

Guru Har Rai ji was urging the sangat to welcome their guests even if they

    appear at very odd time.

He preached to the sangat to have faith. Do good deeds. Believe in honest

earning. Look after their parents. Life is precious, not to indulge in intoxication.

Stay with saadh sangat. He also asked the sangat to share their income with

less fortunate people and help them.

He nominated his younger son Harkrishan and passed the Gurgaddi to him in

October 1661, before he left for his heavenly abode at the young age of 31

    years.
