    Brief history In written records the study of herbs dates back over 5000 years to the Sumerians

    who described some of the medicinal plant uses.

    Egyptian medicine of 1000 B.C are known to use: garlic, opium, castor oil, coriander,mint indigo and other herbs.

    The Old Testament also mentions herbs as mandrake, vetch, caraway, wheat, barleyand rye.

    In India Ayurveda medicine has used many herbs and describing use of turmeric asearly 1900 B.C. In the 6thcentury they described as many as 700 medicinal plant, 64preparations of mineral sources and 57 animal sources.

    First Chinese herbal book compiled the Hung Dynasty going back to 2700 B,C. andlists 365 medicinal plants.

    The ancient Greeks and Romans made medicinal use of plants.

    De Materia Medica written in first century AD describes the compendium of more than500 plants.

    Medical schools known as Bimaristan began to appear from the 9 thcentury in the

    medieval Islamic world. Ibn-al-Bitar described more than 1,400 different plants. Thisallowed the study of materia medica to evolve into the science of pharmacology.

    Brief history

    15th and 16thcentury were great age of herbals, many of them available for the first

    time in English and other languages other than Latin or Greek.

    The Columbian exchange introduced new medical plants to Europe. The Badianus

    Manuscript was an illustrated Aztec herbal translated into Latin in the 16 thcentury.

    Slow erosion began with the Black Death where all the knowledge of the herbs was

    powerless.

    A century later, Paracelsus introduced the use of active chemical drugs

    Like( arsenic, copper sulfate, iron, mercury and sulfur). These were accepted despite

    the toxic effect.

    Many of pharmaceuticals currently available to physicians have long history of use as

    herbal remedies including opium, aspirin, digitalis and quinine.

    The use of and search for drugs and dietary supplements from plants accelerated inrecent years.

    According to World Health Organization 25% of modern drugs used in the United

    States were derived from plants.

    The word drug comes from Dutch word droog which means dried plant.

    Variety of phytochemicals recovered from

    plants

    Alkaloids contain a ring with nitrogen. Many alkaloids have dramatic effect

    on CNS. (Caffeine is an alkaloid that provides mild lift). Alkaloids in general

    cause severe intoxication even death.

    Polyphenols contain phenol ring, The Anthocyanins that give grapes their

    purple color, isoflavons, the phytoestrogens from soy and tannins that give

    tea its astringency are phenolics. Terpenoids are built from terpene building blocks. Each terpene consists of

    two paired isoprenes. The names of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes,

    diterpenes and triterpiens are based on the number of isoprene units.

    Fragrance of the rose and lavender is due to monoterpenes.

    Carotenoids produce red and yellow and orange of pumpkin, corn andtomatoes.

    Herbal tea definition and variety

    Herbal tea, tisane or ptisan is herbal or plant infusion and it istypically combination of boiling water and dried fruits, flowers orherbs. Herbal teas are consumed for their physical or medicaleffects, especially for their stimulant, relaxant or sedativeproperties. Medicinal effect of some of the teas controversial and

    makers are not allowed to make unsubstantiated claims about themedicinal effects of their products.

    While most herbal teas are safe to use, there are some that couldhave toxic effect and permanent damage to the liver like Comfrey

    Anise is sweet and very aromatic licorice-like flavor. The seeds are used in foodpreparation and as tea is used for improving digestion. It is used as additive in liquor,candies, baking cookies. Anise like fennel contains anethol, a phytoestrogen. It isused to relieve the menstrual cramps and is used by nursing mothers to improve theflow and improving quality of milk.

    Artichoke is used in culinary art. It is rich in vitamins and minerals. As tea is actingas diuretic and is improving the liver function. Cynarin and active chemical inartichoke causes increased bile flow and it is mainly located in the pulp. It is producedinto tea in Vietnam.     Bitter melon there are different varieties and it has culinary and medicinaluse. It is generally eaten green and is with similar texture as cucumber. As

    Citrus is good source of flavonoids and limonoids and contain large amounts of citricacid. Orange peal is used for digestion and upset stomach and It is high antioxidant.
