The Oxley Hill Rotary Community Lookout is located at the top of Oxley’s Hill Rd, Bowral overlooking the western approach to Bowral. Construction of the Lookout was the contribution of the Rotary Club of Berrima District to the 2005 Centenary of Rotary International.
Conceived in late 2001 and spanning the incumbencies of four Club Presidents (Allan Cupitt, Col Gelling, Rob Hurdwell and John Macpherson), the Lookout contains an Analemma sundial which uses the rays of the sun and shadows to tell the time. A brass plaque to the left of the sundial, shows its exact location and gives directions how to use it.
The entrance to the Lookout contains a plaque which informs visitors that they are standing on traditional Gundungurra Land. The plaque also indicates the direction in which neighbouring tribes lived.
Nearby a second plaque lists the names of the early Europeans who explored the Wingecarribee area and their Aboriginal guides.
The Lookout was built to provide a place for contemplation, and to recognise the part played by local Aboriginal people in the exploration and settlement of the Wingecarribee region.
The Lookout adds to the tourism experience for visitors approaching Bowral from the west, supplements the history of local Aboriginal people and widens knowledge of the science associated with the sundial.
Wingecarribee Shire Council allowed the Lookout to be built on the road reserve at the top of Oxley’s Hill Rd.
The Club appreciated the co-operation and assistance of the Yamanda Aboriginal Assocation and the Wingecarribee Reconciliation Group for their part in providing the two bronze plaques that provide an Aboriginal focus for the Lookout.

Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities.
Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area.
The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did.
John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW.
Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including
a number of small boutique art galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur.
Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna.
For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank.

Winter in Wollondilly
When planning a trip to the Bradman Museum most people think of cricket. Today the Museum offers a wide range of interactive experiences in conjunction with a cultural understanding of Australia’s history.
Back to Back Ashes! We get to watch the Aussies play cricket throughout winter; what a treat. The Bradman Museum is preparing an exclusive Ashes exhibit and program of events. Keep up to date by visiting the website www.internationalcrickethall.com
The Museum’s inaugural School Holiday Program was a great success. Kids were playing hockey in the cricket nets and testing their accuracy with baseball bats and soccer balls. Budding photographers learned how to frame a photo and young artists experienced the enjoyment of drawing outside.
The success of the program will ensure its continuation during the winter school holidays, 1-14 July 2013 and beyond. Contact the Museum for more information on 02 4862 1247 or send
Cricket and a Whole Lot Morean email to [email protected].
The Museum is also proud to boast a number of new primary and secondary education programs. The children have the opportunity to be part of science, geography and history programs to name a few. Talk to the educational officers and they can cater to the needs of your students. The Bradman Museum is about cricket and a whole lot more!

Wollondilly is a popular destination for a Tree Change or holiday. The area features Razorback Range, Burragorang Valley and towns like Picton, Appin, Thirlmere and Warragamba.
Wollondilly, on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands, is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures. It is proudly known as “The Catchment”, supplying the bulk of Sydney’s drinking water and is a mecca for nature lovers boasting 21 bush walks, wildlife sanctuaries, lookouts and National Parks.

"A place where spirits dwell" and "Water trickling over rocks".
Today, the life and liveliness of the area attracts visitors who come to participate in adventure activities and sports.

So close - a world away The Southern Highlands is rich in heritage and history. Many villages and towns have interesting and unusual names derived from the Aboriginal language; others are named after famous explorers and early settlers.
The following is a sample of place names and their meanings:
Wingecarribee - Aboriginal for “flight of birds” and “waters to rest beside” Wombeyan - “Caves in the Hills” Bundanoon - “Big, deep gullies” Burrawang - A native palm which grew abundantly in the area Bowral - “Large or high” Berrima - “Black swan to the south” Bong Bong - variously stated to mean “many watercourses” or “many frogs” Mittagong - ‘gong’ is supposedly an Aboriginal suffix meaning “mountain”

Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River.
The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town.
Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.
Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes.
Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Historic Berrima
Bundanoon
Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it.
Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas.
You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town.
Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

The rolling hills of Robertson
Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands.
In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian.
The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe.
The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the
Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive.
There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes.
Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views.
The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.

Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality.
The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest.
The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards.
By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It
became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise.
In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.
