Dwelling in the Passion Story

One of my Lenten practices is reading the Holy Week portions of the Gospels. The story is so familiar that when I think about the stories I gloss over the details and miss much of the beauty and pain. Reading the story in each of the Gospels breaks through the familiarity and offers and opportunity to hear and see Jesus’ journey to the cross and resurrection with a new heart and mind.

I encourage you to read these stories during Lent. Let each writer tell the story in their own words. Ask what is familiar? What seems new? What part of the story grabbed your attention? What left you with questions?

Palm Sunday- Holy Saturday Easter

Matthew 21:1- 27:66 Matthew 28:1-20

Mark 11:1-15:47 Mark 16:1-20

Luke 19:28-23:55 Luke 24:1-53

John 12:12-19:42 John 20:1-24

During this year’s mid-week services, we will hear portions of the Passion story.

Jesus is anointed

Judas & the Religious Leaders

The People Choose Barabbas

Peter’s Denial

The Centurion and the Crowd at the Cross

We will have an opportunity to hear the story and to sit with it.

I hope that dwelling in the story of Jesus’ Passion will be a blessing to you.

Pastor Barb

Lent is a solemn religious observance in the liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends ap-proximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, doing penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement, and self-denial. This event is observed by Christians in the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Methodist, and Roman Catho-lic Churches. Some Anabaptist and evangelical churches also observe the Lenten season. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the tradition and events of the New Testament beginning on Friday of Sorrows, further climaxing on Jesus' crucifixion on Good Friday, which ultimately culminates in the joyful celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Lent, many Christians commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penance. Many Christians also add a Lenten spiritual discipline, such as reading a daily devotional or praying through a Lenten calendar, to draw themselves near to God.. The Stations of the Cross, a devotional commemora-tion of Christ's carrying the Cross and of his execution, are often observed. Many Roman Catholic and some Protestant churches remove flowers from their altars, while crucifixes, religious statues, and other elaborate religious symbols are often veiled in violet fabrics in solemn observance of the event. Through-out Christendom, some adherents mark the season with the traditional abstention from the consumption of meat, most notably among Roman Catholics. Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days, in commemoration of the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, before beginning his public ministry, after which he endured temptation by Satan.
