To receive the Sacraments at Holy Redeemer Parish

You or your family need to be a registered member of the Parish for at least six months prior the date of the sacrament to be received. The registration and regular attendance to the mass will be taken from the collection envelopes placed in the basket at the offertory. Starting the 2018-2019 catechetical year the children and their family need to be registered in the parish to have their children in the Holy Redeemer Catechetical program. If coming from outside the parish to receive the sacraments will need a letter of permission from the parish of provenience

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

They say that it is not so much that Columbus dis-covered America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world “stayed discovered.” The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other “discoverers” lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to “the Isle of the Blessed” in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adven-tures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scot-land. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, travel-ing in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Ice-land to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror.

WORDS OF WISDOM

The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today’s first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is “sharper than any two-edged sword.” We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodi-ment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God’s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us.

THE MESSAGE FROM THE POPE

Pope Francis lamented that parents receiving a difficult prena-tal diagnosis often “receive hasty advice to stop the pregnan-cy.” It is contradictory to suppress “human life in the womb in the name of safeguarding other rights,” the pope insisted. “How can an act that suppresses innocent and helpless life in its blossoming be therapeutic, civil, or simply human? ”The pope’s remarks on abortion came during a reflection on the fifth commandment, “Thou shall not kill.” In recent weeks, the pope has dedicated his weekly general audiences to a series of lesson and reflections on the Ten Commandments recorded in the scriptural books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. “One could say that all the evil done in the world is summarized in this: contempt for life,” Pope Francis told the pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square. “What leads man to reject life? They are the idols of this world: money, power, success. These are incorrect parameters to evaluate life. The only authentic measure of life is love, the love with which God loves it!” The positive mean-ing of the fifth commandment is that “God is a lover of life,” he continued. “In every sick child, in every weak old man, in every desperate migrant, in every fragile and threatened life, Christ is looking for us, he is looking for our heart, to disclose the joy of love. It is worthwhile to accept every life because every man is worth the blood of Christ. We can not despise what God so loved!” Pope Francis said. While a sick child or an elderly person who needs assistance can be viewed as a burden, this can actually be “a gift from God,” explained the pope. This vulnerable life can “pull me out of self-centeredness and make me grow in love.”

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Existe en Perú un mural milagroso de la Pasión de Jesucristo. Esta imagen reconocida como el Señor de los Milagros, el Cristo Moreno o el Cristo de Pachaca-milla fue pintada por un angoleño en el siglo XVII pa-ra una cofradía de africanos. A mitad del siglo un fuer-te terremoto sacudió a Lima y las paredes de la cofra-día se cayeron, sin que se dañara el mural. Eventual-mente la imagen se reveló como milagrosa para los que oraban delante de ella. En la imagen aparece Jesús crucificado. Sobre él está el Espíritu Santo y el Padre. A la derecha de la cruz está su Madre con el corazón traspasado por una lanza y a su derecha, el fiel discípu-lo amado. Esta imagen es venerada como el Señor de los Milagros. Sin saberlo el artista angoleño ha pintado una reflexión teológica sobre la divinidad y la humani-dad de Jesucristo. En su pasión redentora Jesús abre las puertas del cielo y de la comunicación entre el cielo y la tierra, entre Dios y la humanidad representada por la Madre y el discípulo.

PALABRAS DE SABIDURÍA

Hoy aprendemos en la primera lectura que el espí-ritu de la sabiduría llega a los que lo invocan. La sabi-duría, como la Palabra de Dios, lleva un mensaje de consuelo y a la vez constituye un gran desafío. La carta a los hebreos nos cuenta que la Palabra de Dios, que está empapada con la sabiduría de Dios, es “más pene-trante que una espada de dos filos”. No podemos aco-bardarnos ante la sabiduría de Dios ni ante la palabra que tiene el poder de penetrar nuestro corazón y mente. Jesús, la Palabra viva de Dios, la encarnación de la sa-biduría, le dice cosas fuertes y muy penetrantes al joven rico que acude a Jesús en busca de respuestas a sus du-das más profundas. Precisamente, cuando el joven pen-saba que había hecho lo suficiente para cumplir los mandamientos de Dios, se le exigió más. Lo mismo sucede en nuestro caso.

El Santo Padre Francisco ha pedido que se haga la oración a S. Miguel Arcángel por todo el mes de Octubre. En obediencia al Santo Padre se rezara esta oración antes de la bendición final en todas las misas.

“Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio; contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto prae-sidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen”. San Miguel Arcángel, defiéndenos en la batalla.Sé nuestro amparo contra las perversidad y asechanzas del demonio. Reprímale Dios, pedimos suplicantes,y tu príncipe de la milicia celestial arroja al infierno con el divino poder a Satanás y a los otros espíritus malignos que andan dispersos por el mundo para la perdición de las almas. Amén.

EL PAPA NOS HABLA “La vida resulta agredida por las guerras, por las organizaciones que explotan a las personas, por las especulaciones sobre el medio ambiente y por la cultura del descarte y todos los sistemas que someten la existencia humana a cálculos de oportunidad mientras un número escandaloso de personas viven en un estado indigno”, aseveró.Es en ese contexto, en el de la cultura del descarte, en el que situó el aborto. “Un enfoque contradictorio permite la supresión de la vida humana en el útero en nombre de la defensa de otros derechos. ¿Cómo puede ser terapéutico, civil o simplemente humano un acto que suprime la vida inocente e indefensa en su florecimiento?”.“¿De dónde viene todo esto?”, se preguntó. “La violencia y el rechazo de la vida nacen del miedo. De hecho, la acogida del otro es un desafío al individualismo”.“Un niño enfermo es como todo necesitado de la tierra, como un anciano que necesita de asistencia, como tantos pobres que luchan para salir adelante: ese al que se presenta como un problema, es, en realidad, un don de Dios que puede sacarme del egocentrismo y hacer crecer el amor. La vida vulnerable nos indica el camino para salir, el camino para salvarnos de una existencia replegada sobre sí misma y descubrir la alegría del amor”.El Papa explicó que “los ídolos de este mundo: el dinero, el poder, el éxito”, son los que “llevan al hombre a rechazar la vida”. Aseguró que esos ídolos “son parámetros errado para valorar la vida. La única medida auténtica de la vida es el amor, el amor con el que Dios ama”.“Vale la pena acoger toda vida porque cada persona vale la sangre de Cristo mismo. No se puede despreciar aquello que Dios a amado”, subrayó.El Papa finalizó su catequesis afirmando que “debemos decir a los hombres y a las mujeres del mundo: no despreciéis la vida. La vida de los demás, pero también vuestra propia vida, porque también esa se incluye en el Mandamiento ‘no matarás’. A tantos jóvenes les digo: ¡no desprecies tu existencia! ¡Deja de rechazar la obra de Dios! ¡Tú eres obra de Dios!”.
