QUICK TIMES AT ROCKY RISES
On Saturday South Bendigo Athletics club had their 4th cross country run of the season at
RockyRises Rd, Maiden Gully. The runners had perfect conditions and came out ready to run some
quick times.
In the Hume & Iser, 8000m, Daniel Plowright sprinted home impressing all to win in what
was the fastest men’s time of 32 minutes 45 seconds. Samantha Erin who was the quickest women
and 3rd fastest overall, took 2nd place running a 37:29, with Andrew Myers rounding out the top
36:09.
In the Reily’s Home Appliances 4000m Lara Pearce showed real class to be 10 seconds clear
of the rest of the field running 19:50. Chris Timewell chased hard the whole way to record a 16:52,
while Monica Hill sprinted past the ever consistent Carol Coad to take 3rd. Taleah Hayes managed
to wipe away 22 seconds of her personal best running 15:44 be the quickest out of the girls and 2nd
fastest overall. Jordan Boal took a massive 1 minute and 50 seconds off his previous best to be the
quickest of the men in 14:18. Peter Hayes also improved on his previous best taking 38 seconds off
his best to run a 21:31.
Yazmin Hayes showed that she is a star of the future, winning the Bicknell's Sports, 2000m
with an 8:28 run. Yazmin is one of three sisters competing at South Bendigo, who we suggest
keeping an eye on over the upcoming seasons. The surprise of the day came from Joshua Pickthall,
usually known for his sprinting ability, Josh took 2nd place from Monte Levis on a photo finish.
Monte ran 10:17 while Josh ran a new personal best of 7:24. Zahra Hayes, Jett Patullo, Madison
Hill, Erin Hilson and Keely Trew all managed new personal bests over 2km course.
The under 10’s Bendigo Toyworld 1000m race was the race of the day, with finish
decided in a sprint. Jett Patullo lived up to fast name taking out the race with the fastest time of
4:14. Bailey Burkitt-Morrison recorded a 5:22 to take 2nd and Aldray Hill rounded out the top three
in his first club running an impressive 4:56.

Low Times and High notes Reached at Elmore, by South Bendigo Publicity Scribe Jay Dools.
It is not sure what left the runners more breathless on Saturday, the running on a cold day at
Elmore or the singing that took place at the Karaoke afterwards. One thing we do know is that a lot
of fun was had by all in round 5 of South Bendigo’s cross country season.
In the Hume & Iser 6500m Lara Pearce had the tough job of having everyone chasing her.
Starting from the front of the field, Lara managed to storm away to take the win from Gary Schurr
and Samantha Erwin. Kyall Britten was the fastest of the men in 23:22 and Teleah Hayes the fastest
of the women in 27:03.
Eli Pearce was the winner in the Reilly's Home Appliances 3000m having a great run to leave
the rest of the field in his wake. He had to wait a minute 30 seconds before 2nd place Madison Hill
crossed the line ahead of Maria Bryce. Kyle Hilson who has been struggling for form this season had
his breakthrough to come fourth in a quick time. Zahra Hayes was the quickest female in 12.32 and
Jordan Boal the fastest male in 10.33.
In the Bicknell's Sports 1500m it was a sibling’s affair with young runners Ada taking the win
from her brother Monte Levis. Jack Dooley took third place. Jordan Boal was the quickest male once
again running 5 minutes, while Keely Trew was the fastest female in 6:32
The Bendigo Toyworld under 10’s 800m was a show of dominance by Angus Giffin, who
never looked challenged winning by 30 seconds. Aldray Hill took 2nd after a mix up with the course
direction which may have cost him a few seconds. Bailey Burkitt-Morrison just pipped Shelby Giri
to get on the podium. Jett Patullo had the fastest time for the boy’s in3:09. Jessica Chisholm was the
fastest girls following in her families’ tradition of running quick times in 3:46
Congratulations to Sam Chapman, Angus Giffin and Callum Griffin on coming out and having
their first runs with the club as well as everyone else for competing.

Buchanan and Tweed win The Woodvale Classic.
Flash flooding threatened to cancel the prestigious Woodvale Classic from Friday night,
however the rain managed to hold off until after the last race to allow for a some great contests. The
main race of the day the, Champions SUPA IGA 6500 metres was taken out by Bendigo University
athletes, Andy Buchanan and Rebecca Tweed.
In the men’s race Buchanan who has been juggling training with his study Latrobe University,
had a handy cushion to second place winning by over a minute from Harriers runner Peter Rice. Mike
Bieleny (Bendigo University) may have had the most impressive run of the day finishing third overall,
but first in his 50-59 category, showing the young fellas how its done.
The task wasn’t quite as easy for Rebecca Tweed who battled with young South Bendigo
runner Teleah Hayes and Bendigo Harriers runner, Virginia Bennett took third, 4 seconds behind.
Taleah Hayes still went home with a sash winning her under 20 age category.
The Bicknells Independent Sports, 3200m was a tough contest with Bendigo University
athlete Matthew Heislers breaking through the pack to take the win. Matthew LeNepveu from South
Bendigo athletics club came through for second and Harriers, Caleb Spruce taking third. All three
boys where in the under 16 age category.
Harriers, Matilda Moore had the girls and the majority of the boys covered over the 3200m.
What made Matilda’s run even more impressive was that she is only 13 years old. Aimee Powell
(Harriers)took 2 second overall and first for the under 16 girls, and South Bendigo’s Emily Patterson
got third for the women.
The under 10 and 12 year olds lined up in the Bicknells 1000m in what was a sibling affair
with 4 out of the 6 podium places taken out from brothers and sisters. The boys race was the closest
run of the day, with less than a second separating first place, Lachlan Balcke and Ned Buckell. Ned’s
brother Matt Buckell had to settle for third. All three boys run for the Bendigo Harriers, a good sign
for the clubs future in cross country. South Bendigo’s Zahra Hayes took out the girls race from young
gun Emma Gilligan from the Bendigo Harriers who took second overall and first in the under 10’s
race. Yazmin Hayes had to settle for 3rd place overall.

LANDRY'S RD, LOCKWOOD - 22nd June 2013
(59 Competitors)
Raffle Donor: Trew Family
Raffle Winner: Matthew Le-Nepvue
In perfect conditions on Saturday the South Bendigo athletes came out to Landry's Rd eager
for a win. All the races where very competitive credit to the handicaper.
In the Hume & Iser, 8000m it was the fastest male, Kyall Brittain who took the win from the
fastest female, Samantha Erwin and Matthew Le-Nepveu in third. The course was a challenging one
with the last 4km undulating leaving runners desperate to see the finish line appear over the next hill.
Daniel Plowright was the only runner to achieve a personal best which was a great achievement
considering the difficulty of the course.
The girls flexed their muscle in the Reilly's Home Appliances, 3000m with Maria Bryce, Lara
Pearce and Madison Hill taking the first three places. Lara and Madison chased hard the whole way
however the time difference was just too much in the end as Maria Bryce, the front marker held on
to take the win by seconds.
In the always entertaining and closely fought out Bendigo Toyworld 800m for the under 10’s,
it was Bailey Burkitt-Morrison who took the win from the constantly improving Aldray Hill and Jett
Patullo. Bailey is a new runner with the club and is showing some real potential, even managing to
step up to the longer distances in recent weeks.
The final run of the day was the Bicknell's Sports 1500m, won by 100m runner Nigel self
from young gun Jett Pattulo in a photo finish. Keely Trew who was the fastest female took third place
overall. It was fair to say that Young Jet had more people cheering for him as the top two crossed the
line however Nigel Self stripped away their hopes, hungry for his first ever cross country race win.
The 1500m was Jet’s second podium finish of the day, and we all know much bigger things are
destined for Jet who puts his heart into every race.
Congratulations to Charlie Chapman, Louis Chapman, Brad Reeves, Conor Whitmee and
Liam Campbell on their first runs with the club.

The cold weather may have scared off a few of the South runners however those that did show
up where treated to a great course.
In the Hume and Iser 8000m, it was the youngest man in the field, Matthew Le-Nepveu who
took first from Daniel Plowright and Russell Fenwick. Wolf Heiden was the only other runner, in the
well handicapped event were only just over a minute separated first to last.
Club President and masters extraordinaire Leigh Browell was the winner of the Reilly’s Home
Appliances 3000m. Leigh has been racking up the training hours the last few weeks to get into shape
for the Oceania Masters in January which are to be held in Bendigo, with his lead up event the Great
Barrier Reef Masters in Cairns less than 5 weeks away. The training is clearly paying off for Leigh as
he managed a big seasons best. Peter Hayes and Yazmin Hayes took second and third respectively.
In the Toyworld 800m, it was another blowout with Isla Wiseman taking the win. Isla took off
fast and quickly caught the front markers and continued to storm away. She began to feel the result
of her fast start towards the finish however had gained enough of a lead to take the win from
backmarkers, Jett Patullo and Eli Pearce.
It was a frontmarkers race in the Bicknells Independent sports 1500m race with Peter Curtis
Snr taking line honours from Anthony Johns and Leanne Hume. Pete looked strong for most of the
race, giving the backmarkers no chance of catching him.

When The Going Got Tough, The Tough Got Going in Mandurang
It was a hard day for the Champions Supa IGA sponsored South Bendigo Athletic Club's cross
country runners at Pearce's Rd, Mandurang as the rain poured down on a hilly and muddy course.
This showed in the times, which were a lot slower than average.
Wet weather specialist Matthew Le-Nepveu showed that he wasn’t going to let a bit of mud
stop him from standing on top of the podium in the Hume & Iser 6500m. Daniel Plowright took
second and Russell Fenwick third.
In the Reilly's Home Appliances 3000 meters it was Kyle Hilson who broke through for his
first win of the season. Kyle has been improving steadily during the season as is often seen doing
repetitions around the flora hill track at an impressive pace. Samantha Erwin and Peter Hayes took
second and third respectively.
Jett Patullo is having an impressive season taking yet another win in the Toyworld 800m race.
Tyson Bingham was close behind with Eli Pearce getting third, but with the quickest time of the day.
Not bad for someone relatively new to the sport.
In the Bicknell's Sports 1500m Peter Curtis Snr performed a rare feet, winning the race in
consecutive weeks. He didn’t have it all his own way this week, as he took it with the lean from fastest
male, Damian Pearce.

ATLAS RD. JUNORTOUN - 27th July 2013
(49 Competitors)
Raffle Donor: Scott Purdon
Raffle Winner: Chris Timewell
Chocolates: Teleah Hayes, Worthington Family
At South Bendigo's last club run at Atlas Road, Junortoun. A new course was created taking
in the O'Keefe trail, and besides dodging a lot of puddles from the previous days rain a great day was
had by all. The Hume & Iser 5000m saw Castlemaine runner Chris Timewell take line honours from
Gary Schurr and Samantha Erwin. Chris has been to quite a few cross country runs this season as he
prepares to be fit for the upcoming Oceania Masters in Bendigo in January. Fastest time honours
went to Kyall Britten 17:27 and fastest female coming back from injury was Sophie Hawken 19:49.
The Reilly's Home Appliances 3000m was won by the ever improving Kyle Hilson from Peter
Hayes and Fastest female Teleah Hayes 11:19. Kyle has been training hard this year and each week
is setting new personal bests with his performances, Teleah is looking well on track for the upcoming
Nationals. Fastest Time honours went to Club President Leigh Browell 10:49 who seems to be hitting
his straps in fine form as he heads to Cairns this weekend for the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games.
The 1000m Bendigo Toyworld race saw Eli Pearce stormed home to win in fastest time 3:47
over his sister Sasha Pearce fastest female 4:59 and Aldray Hill. Eli is new to cross country this
season but looks destined to be a runner of the future running some great times in recent weeks and
he's not afraid to tackle races like the 3000m and 1500m. Eli was the recent outright winner of the
combined club's run at the Bendigo Jockey Club over 800m. Also this season he has won the
Woodvale Classic under 10's race.
Final race of the day was the Bicknell's Sports 2000m. Maree Stow took line honours over
Keely Farnell and the inform Peter Curtis Snr. Kyall Britten was again fastest time in 6:41 and fastest
female went to Meg Patterson 8:19.

the rainy, muddy conditions of recent weeks. Fast times were expected from the outset and we were
left not dissapointed.
In the 6500m, sponsored by Hume & Iser, Darren Hartland was first across the line from the
fastest female, Samantha Erwin 28:37 and in 3rd place was fastest male Kyall Britten 23:03.
The Reilly's Home Appliances 3000m, was taken by the constantly improving Peter Hayes,
from young gun and fastest female, Teleah Hayes 11:13, not far away in 3rd place was Teleah's coach
Paul Rance finishing the race of with fastest male honours in 11:44.
Kai Pearce was clearly delighted to have his first ever ribbon in the Bendigo Toyworld 800m
with a blistering finish to hold of the always giving his best Jett Patullo, and Sasha Pearce finishing
3rd and fastest female in 4:13. Taking fastest male honours was older brother Eli Pearce in 3:10. Kai
was clearly the fan favourite, crossing the line to a roar of cheers from the crowd.
Josh Pickthall had been around the mark for the entire season however some were starting to
believe he has missed his chance, but for the local summer sprints and throws star this was not the
case as he won the last race of the season, the Bicknell's Sports 1500m in 5:16 earning him fastest
male honours. Zahra Hayes breaking the 6 minute barrier set a new cross country personal best of
5:52 crossed the line in second and Nigel Self third. Fastest female backing up from the 3000m was
local cross country female star Teleah Hayes in 5:21.

DONNA TICKELL MEMORIAL 1500 METRES
2013 Winner -
Club Member Donna Tickell was killed whilst riding her bike home from school, near
Newstead.
This event was set up by the club to remember a youngster who was a willing helper and
competitor with the club during the Cross Country season.
DONNA LEE TICKELL
13.9.75 TO 10-05-90
Tragically killed at age 14 years.
A much loved, and loving family person, who enjoyed life to the fullest. An unselfish girl who wished the best for everyone else. Her zest for life is well remembered by those who had the fortune to have known Donna. Her sporting attitude, was a lesson many could well adopt. No complaints, or regrets, just get on with the job. Her “cheeky” ( tom boyish ) manner, oozing personality, was an infectious one, which left one feeling good about yourself and proud to be in her company. Not the fastest athlete around at the time, but an ambassador for her peers, a credit to herself and her family. Every so often a person of outstanding credential comes along. Donna WAS one of those people. A great mate for her brother Lucas who wears a picture of his late sister tattooed proudly on his chest. Their ‘scraps’ left many mystified. Donna was a willing, energetic worker for the Club, helping in any way she could. A terrific club mate, who was always on the sidelines, to offer encouragement and praise to fellow athletes.

THANKYOU Once again big thankyou's go to the many members who helped throughout the season.
Whether it being course marking, timekeeping, lining up runners, ticket writing, raffle and
chocolate donors, turn around guys, canteen organisers, ticket sellers, entry takers, soup suppliers.
To Meg Meyers with help from Andrew, who did a great job in handicapping the races. Meg
will be stepping down for next year, so if there's anyone interested in doing her job, then please let us
know.
To Club President Leigh Browell for all his chocky donations throughout the season. Just an
incentive to keep us all running after eating all them.
