The world of mobile telecommunication is on its wayto change from pure voice applications to high speeddata networks. The evolution of wireline based IP/Ethernet, DSL, fibre to the home, and powerline commu-nications is stimulating fixed broadband data and willstrongly leverage mobile applications. Availability ofseamless mobile broadband data anywhere anytimewill revolutionise and foster new service applications inthe field of communication, industry, transportation andhealth care.
WLAN/Wi-Fi already provides real broadband wire-less experience to nomadic users, and Carrier Class3G / 4G will enhance broadband wireless, pushing forreal mobile high speed access and guaranteed qualityof service.
Communication services will be combined in manydifferent ways to offer high speed digital data to indus-try, office and residential users. Desktop computers,television sets, notebooks and handheld terminals willturn into multifunctional devices for internet and e-mailaccess, VPN connectivity, instant messaging, video
conferencing, media streaming, interactive gaming, VoIP,E-Commerce, telemetry, remote biometric analysis andmany more applications.Developed countries usually have a fairly good wirelineMetro Area infrastructure. Fibre based networks provideE1/T1 access for industrial and office environments.CATV and plain old telephone lines provide last milebroadband DSL access for residential users, and fibre tothe home is currently being heavily promoted.Still there is a demand for wireless broadband access inremote and urban areas. The key driver for this is mobil-
ity along with the expectation of the end users to havebroadband data available at their finger tips whereverthey are roaming. On top of mobile services, fixed wire-less is an attractive alternative to delivering competitivebroadband data to underserved areas in emerging anddeveloped markets. Thanks to its nature, it is straightfor-ward to deploy and does not involve the prohibitivecosts of laying cable networks.Today three major technologies for broadband wirelessaccess can be identified:

WLAN/ Wi-Fi 3G Systems (UMTS, CD MA 2000, TD-SCDMA) 4G (GSM, UMTS, LTE etc.))
Wi-Fi networks (the brand name for WLAN) arefocussed on public hot spots, offices and the industrialenvironment. City-wide meshed networks will play animportant role in municipal applications for both publicauthorities and private users.Wi-Fi has experienced fast but unorganised growth andis mostly a rather patchy solution. Roaming is possible
within single Wi-Fi networks but is not supported on ageneral scale. Nevertheless, WLAN networks havegained wide acceptance and proven to be an efficientsolution for short distance wireless coverage. Wi-Fi willalso be a versatile option to divert 3G and 4G servicesinto picocell areas.Due to the unlicensed spectrum utilised, Wi-Fi may suf-fer from RF-interference of co-located systems operatingin the same ISM band. Moreover, limitations exist withregard to QoS. However, if Wi-Fi deployment is wellco-ordinated, disturbances can be reduced to a mini-mum.By implementing the MIMO (multiple in - multiple out)technology, around the 802.11n standard, the trans-mission reliability will be increased, as well as thepossible transmission rate up to 300 Mbps.

Throughout the recent years, IEEE 802.11 WirelessLocal Area Networks (WLAN) have become a popu-lar and widely adopted means for mobile data transmis-sion in various applications. Initially deployed as a pico-cell wireless extension of Ethernet in offices, hot spotand industrial WLAN networks have grown from local
applications to city-wide municipal networks deliveringstate of the art service to private and public users.

Wireless networks for data transmission so-calledWireless Local Area Networks have been under dis-cussion for years, but only since the publication of the802.11b standard enabling raw transmission rates of11 Mbps has this vision become a reality. The evolutionof new technologies from 802.11a to 802.11g haveincreased data throughput to 54 Mbps, enabling realtime video streaming and rich content applications. more up to several 100 Mbps. Wireless local areanetworks operate in non-licensed frequency bands from2.4 GHz to 2.4835 and sub-bands from 5.15 to 5.875GHz. Frequency allocation differs slightly in differentcountries; detailed information is available from thenational regulation authorities/ OFCOMs. A brief over-view is given on page 13.
WLANs offer versatile solutions for remote access toimportant information and data. Nomadic applica-tions such as real time access to presentations orvideo streaming during meetings, data gathering andexchanging on production lines or during service calls,control of warehouse logistics flows and setting upof ad hoc networks and many more can be realisedthanks to the straightforward deployment of WLANs.
Hospitals utilise WLANs for fast and mobile access to
patient records by doctors, nurses and technicians. Dueto their limited transmit power, indoor WLAN systemsmay be even used in intensive care stations withoutproviding harmful interference to the sensitive medicalequipment.Of course, WLANs can also be utilised in outdoorenvironments, for example for providing Internet ande-mail access on trains and subways, backhauling highrate data traffic between buildings or connecting toremote video surveillance cameras. Supporting variousapplications at low to medium costs of ownership along
with the capability of rapid deployment has led to thetremendous success of WLAN networks.

Ad-hoc/peer to peer networksUsers communicate directly with the other users sub-scriber equipment without routing traffic through a back-bone network. The signal transmission distance relies on
equipment performance and the local environment.
Point to multipointThe WiFI network provides a cellular type of coverageconnecting multiple buildings and multiple users witha centralised WLAN base station infrastructure. This isoften also referred to as last mile access. The simplestway to realise Point to Multipoint coverage is to useomni-directional antennas. When capacity needs to beincreased, additional access points will have to be fittedand directional antennas will have to be used to divide
coverage into different sectors.

Meshed networksMeshed networks utilise a number of access points,each being interconnected to its neighbouring accesspoint. This allows dynamic routing of data packetsthrough the system between any of the subscribers. Thenetwork is self-learnable and data paths are chosen
according to optimum signal to interference conditionsto ensure fast and reliable transmission. Meshed net-works are being increasingly deployed in large scalemetro areas to facilitate access to mobile applicationsanywhere anytime.
Point to pointPoint to point radio bridges are used to backhaul localLANs to backbone networks or to interface betweenseparate LANs at different locations (i.e. between build-ings). This eliminates the need for expensive cable or
fibre interconnect options and costly truck roll.
Stand alone wireless network with access pointFinally, the simplest WLAN network consists merely ofa single access point or WLAN router which providesmultiple users with a wireless connection to the fixednetwork (e.g. DSL).The planning and installation of Wireless LANs is a rou-tine process for established IT contractors, wireless Inter-net service providers and system integrators.
