Waterfowl hunters insouthern Minnesota willhave additional late sea-son hunting opportunitiesunder a new three-zone,60-day season announcedtoday by the MinnesotaDepartment of NaturalResources(DNR). Lastyear,theDNRsplitthe state into two huntingzones with different sea-sondatesaspartofanef-fort to provide additionalhunting opportunities asbirds migrate from northtosouth.Theadditionofathirdzonefurthersthatap-proach. “A third zone was sup-ported in data collectedaspartofahuntersurveyand a first-ever waterfowlhunter focus group,” saidTom Landwehr, DNRcommissioner. “This willextend the hunting seasonin southern Minnesotathrough the first weekendin December, which willappeal to hunters wherewatershavenotyet frozenand migrating birds arestillcomingthrough.” The state’s waterfowlseason will open one-half hourbeforesunriseonSat-urday, Sept. 22, statewide.The daily bag limit of sixducks per day and a 60-

day season are unchangedfrom last year. The mal-lard bag limit remains atfourperday,includingtwohen mallards. The woodduckbaglimitwillremainatthreeperday.Thedailylimit for scaup is four, upfromtwolastyear.Posses-sionlimitsremainattwicethedailybaglimits. Dennis Simon, DNRwildlife chief, said thisyear’sopeneristheearliestin 45 years. The Sept. 22datewasselectedbasedonU.S.FishandWildlifeSer-vice direction that enablesstates in the MississippiFlyway to open their sea-sonon theSaturdaynear-estSept.24. “The season opened onSept. 24 last year,” saidSimon. “That too was anearlier-than-normal open-er. We saw hunter satis-factionlevelsrise lastyeardue,inpart,togoodearlyseason wood duck andblue-wingedtealhunting.” Duck season length isbased on mallard countsfrom a continental sur-vey, including Minnesotainformation. This year’sestimate was 11 millionmallards,whichwasabovethe average of 8.1 millionmallards and the secondhighest count since 1992.SteveCordts,DNRwater-fowl specialist, saidbreed-

ing duck numbers for allspecieswereverygoodthisyear. He noted wetlandconditions in the majorwaterfowl breeding areaswere drier than last yearbutstillnearlong-termav-erages. “The population indexof local breeding mal-lards in Minnesota was attheir long-termaverageof225,000 breeding mallardsthis spring,” Cordt said.“Wetland conditions inMinnesota were drier thisspring compared to lastyear,butimprovedinmanyareasinMayandJune.”

DUCK SEASON IntheNorthDuckZone(north of Highway 210),duckseasonwill runfromSaturday,Sept.22,toTues-day,Nov.20. In the Central DuckZone,duckseasonwillrunfromSaturday,Sept.22toSunday, Sept. 30 and Sat-urday, Oct. 6 to Sunday,Nov.25. IntheSouthDuckZone(south of Highway 212),duck season will run fromSaturday,Sept.22,toSun-day,Sept.30,andSaturday,Oct.13,toSunday,Dec.2. Shooting hours will befrom one half hour be-foresunriseto4p.m.dailythrough Saturday, Oct. 6,and from one half hour

beforesunrisetosunsettheremainderoftheseason. Motorized decoys orother motorized devicesdesigned to attract migra-torywaterfowlmaynotbeusedfromtheopeningdayof duck season throughSaturday,Oct.6.Onwaterbodiesandlandsfullycon-tainedwithinstatewildlifemanagement area bound-aries,apersonmaynotusethese devices at any timeduring the waterfowl sea-son.

GOOSE SEASONSEarly September Goose Season: TheearlyCanadagooseseason opened statewideon Saturday, Sept. 1, andwill run through Friday,Sept. 21. Bag limits forCanada geese will be fiveperdaystatewide. A $4 permit is requiredto hunt Canada geese inthe early season. Permitsare available whereverhuntingandanglinglicens-esaresold.Therestrictionprohibitinghuntingwithin100 yards of surface wa-terremainsineffectintheNorthwest goose zone,CarlosAveryWMA,Oche-daLakeGamerefuge,andanareasurroundingSwan

Lake in Nicollet County.Early season goose hunt-ersshouldconsultthe2012Waterfowl Supplement forzone maps and additionaldetails.

Regular Goose Season:Minnesota’sregulargooseseason will open in con-junctionwiththeducksea-sonstatewideonSaturday,Sept.22,withabaglimitofthreeCanadageeseperdaythe entire season. Gooseseason will be closed inthecentralandsouthduckzoneswhenduckseasonisclosed. IntheNorthDuckzone,gooseseasonwillrunfromSaturday,Sept.22toSun-day,Dec.16.IntheCentralDuck zone, goose seasonwill run from Saturday,Sept. 22, to Sunday, Sept.30, and Saturday, Oct. 6,to Friday, Dec. 21. In theSouth Duck zone, gooseseason will run from Sat-urday,Sept.22,toSunday,Sept. 30, and Saturday,Oct.13,toFriday,Dec.28. “Hunters can expect tosee excellent numbers ofCanada geese again thisfall,” Cordts said. “Thenumber of breeding geesein Minnesota is very highand local production was

very good this spring. Inaddition, we should seegood numbers of migrantgeese in the state this fall,particularly in areas suchas Lac qui Parle WildlifeManagementArea.”

Other Goose Seasons: The season for lightgeese(snow,blueandRoss’geese),white-frontedgeese,andbrantwillrunconcur-rent with open Canadagooseseasonineachzone.Bag limits are 20 lightgeese per day, one white-frontedgooseperday,andonebrantperday.

Sandhill Crane Season: The season for sandhillcraneswillopentwoweekslaterthisyearandrunfromSaturday,Sept.15,toSun-day,Oct.21,intheNorth-westGooseZoneonly.Thedailybag limitwillbetwosandhill cranes per day. Asandhill crane permit ($3)is required in addition toa small game hunting li-cense. Additional details onthe duck, goose, sandhillcrane, and other migra-tory bird hunting seasonswill be available in the2012MinnesotaWaterfowlHuntingRegulations.
