he was told he was “trending” big on Twitter. That evolved a week later into the racer John King being on the set of the news anchor John King.

“We talked about how racing and politics were alike,” said King, of Kingsport, Ten-nessee.

And how’s that?“You stay out of trouble,” smiled King,

“and be there in the end.”Good racing AND political advice!King did just that in the kick-off race

of the Camping World Truck Series at the famous Daytona Speedway in dramatic fashion.

In fact, it was the third and last “Green-!"#$%&'"%()%*%+,-./%*$#0%-1-2#3"-4.*-$"%-5*%()&1-66%+-$*7()-*8(%9

And that’s how he has become King of

the Road.Racer King heaped plenty of praise on

Red Horse Racing team owner Tom DeLoach and crew chief Chad Kendrick.

“It’s a team effort, and we all work well together,” said King. “And having Tim and Todd as teammates is a big help in my learn-ing curve.”

Some learning curve! King had never raced Daytona or any superspeedway, let 86.2%-<70C&+*84$-5#$"-$*7()3-*8(#2B-8$-=:@&plus mph!

One unexpected thrill was a live appear-ance on SpeedChannel’s Wind Tunnel with legendary racing journalist Dave Despain.

“They called, I was put on a plane, and before I knew it I was on live TV with a guy I’ve watched all my life,” said King. “I was nervous.”

But he conducted himself like a veteran, and came across more like a veteran 30-some-thing than a rookie barely into his 20s.

The Daytona Truck champion grew up in a racing family, and his dad’s friendship with NASCAR Champion Bill Elliott lead to King spending most of 2008 at “Awesome Bill’s” Dawsonville, GA home. He participated in Elliot’s driver development program, racing on dirt tracks and learning every aspect of the game.

“I learned a lot, I spent a lot of time with Bill, and it was a great experience,” said King.

“I love the grass roots racing in this part of the country,” said King. “We have as much racing history around here as anywhere else in the U.S. A.” The handsome racer with bright blue eyes has all the ingre-dients to be a future star in NASCAR - he’s articulate and polite, and has a good grasp of what he’s accomplished. Yet King realizes that only through constancy can he be a seri-ous contender for the truck championship.

“I need to keep our nose clean and put together a string of good runs,” said King, looking forward to the next race at Martin-3/#66%-.2-E8*("-F=3$9-GH"%*%I3-3$#66-*%3C%($-to gain.”

Attendees to the premier spring event for the Tri Cities will actually get to vote on what beer will be put into production by a Kingsport brewery.

A fan favorite at Kingsport Oktoberfest last fall, Studio Brew of Kingsport will be sampling two versions of a beer they have in development. By celebrating the Art of Cinema they have created a beer “Gone with the Wheat “.

They’ve made two versions, a German Dunkel style and a Hefeweizen. With a touch Peach and Butter Pecan these beers will bring southern grace and appeal. Owner Erich Allen says it’s up to the people who attend Thirsty Orange which version they put into production.

“We’re focused on the art of making beer, and with that we’re taking a southern Georgia approach on a beer. We’re going to do a fan challenge to where people taste each beer and tell us which one is the winner. And from that, we’ll put it in production,” said Allen.S*B82#V%*3-.4-$"%-H"#*3$D-S*82B%-38D-#$I3-8-(*%+#$-$.-$"%-B*.5#2B-270<%*-.4-<%%*-81(#.28+.3-#2-$"%-H*#-'#$#%39“Our long term goal is to create a more educated beer consumer in this region, and raise the bar for what peo-

fest, we knew they would do a bang up job at the Thirsty Orange. They have a great following, from what we released at Kingsport Oktoberfest there was a lot of people with discerning palettes that understood beer,” said Allen.

Thirsty Orange organizers say Allen is a great example of how beer from this region is gaining national recog-nition.

“Southern breweries like Erich’s are really pioneers when it comes to unique craft beers. It’s an exciting time to be a beer lover and an even better time to learn more about what there is out there,” said Carson.!#$"-0.*%-$"82-Q@-<%%*3-380C6#2B-8$-$"%-%/%2$;-8$$%2+%%3-5#66-"8/%-$"%-("82(%-$.-380C6%-8-/8*#%$D-.4-<*%53;-

With their extensive tour 3("%+76%-^8/%*8B#2B-?>@-+8$%3-8-year), Ball in the House reaches millions and is arguably one of the hardest working, most suc-

cessful indie bands today. They have performed with

A review from the Boston Globe put it very succinctly: “Ball in the House has every-$"#2B-D.7-5.76+-%RC%($-$.-12+-in a successful pop/rock band... the one thing it doesn’t have is instruments.”

Ryan Chappelle: I come to Ball in the House from Lincoln, Nebraska, where I have been singing and performing for a number of years. After discov-ering my love for singing at an early age, music was always a big part of my education. I au-ditioned and was accepted into select choirs throughout my middle and high school years. It was in high school that I started

0D-1*3$-8-(8CC%668-B*.7C-5#$"-three friends. This group was put together for a school talent show and went on to release a CD before graduation. It was this involvement that led to a music scholarship to Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska where I participated in many specialized performing choirs and had a lead in the college musical. During these years, I was also taking classes in music theory and history, as well as performing with various semi-pro acts around the Lincoln area. I graduated in 2003 with a degree in business marketing from Peru State College.

After college, I joined Lin-coln’s premier a cappella group, No Better Cause, and toured venues, including schools and performing arts centers, throughout the Midwest.

After I saw an audition notice for Ball in the House on an a (8CC%668-5%<-3#$%9-Z-A%5-$.-T.3-ton, met with the guys, and got the callback a few weeks later. I

made the move to Boston where I have since been touring and performing all over the nation with Ball in the House.

Jon J Ryan: I grew up in Bos-ton, but was never much into music as a kid. It all changed 4.*-0%-<8()-#2->$"-B*8+%;-5"%2-I met Dave at the Boston Boys Choir School. We studied music pretty intensely, learning to sight read, singing every day in church and other venues, and also learning to play the recorder, piano, and hand bells. Later in high school, I discov-ered the magic of keyboards and drum machines and took up bass as well.

At Skidmore College, the small school setting allowed me tons of musical experience out-side the classroom as I majored in music inside the classroom. This is where I got the a cap-pella bug in a group there (Bandersnatchers), in addition to playing in a band, piano ac-companying, singing in chorus, and instrumental and vocal ar-

ranging. After graduating with music honors, I sang in various a cappella groups, including the Vineyard Sound, while teaching elementary music and piano lessons. I continued to arrange vocal music, both for my own groups, as well as others.

I had always loved rhythm, even more than singing, but never really knew much about beatboxing until I saw Andrew Chaikin perform with the House Jacks. With his amaz-ing performance as inspiration and wanting to perform full time myself, I started Ball in the House and worked on beatbox-ing until I could go for an entire show. Now here we are and I’m blessed with being able to do this for a living.

Dave Guisti: I was born and raised in Dorchester, Massa-chusetts, and my love for music 3$8*$%+-#2-$"%-1*3$-B*8+%9-Z-583-in the play Pinocchio, where I 382B-0D-1*3$-3.6.;-GZ-Y.$-K.-Strings.” I was hooked.

After performing in many musicals during my junior and senior years of High School, I attended Berklee College of Music. I was a vocal perfor-mance major.

I went on to be the musical director at St. Ambrose Parrish in Dorchester, MA. There, I was cantor, director of a children’s choir, and performed with the Spanish choir. My time there was one of the best times of my life. I met up with Jon shortly after being at St. Ambrose, and the rest is history. I have been with Ball in the House for many years now. I am still very passionate about what we do. Through our outreach with students, we are able to share all that we have learned throughout our lives with them. Hopefully inspiring them to perform. To see that music is cool. You don’t have to choose between sports and the arts. You can get involved in both. I try to tell students that music is such a positive way to express yourself. No matter where you are from, how you look, and what your personal beliefs are, music is a beautiful universal language. I am so honored to be part of Ball in the House . My bandmates and I are very lucky guys.

fought for the Union and others for the Confederacy.

The exhibit also examines how the Civil War affected the opera-tions of Tusculum. The President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library is housed in-side the “Old College” building, which was the only building on what is now the main Greeneville campus at the time of the war.

Museum studies students worked diligently throughout the past six months to put the exhibit to-gether. Those students include Erika Allison of Alpharetta, Ga.; George Blalock of Greeneville; Katherine Dooly of Chuckey; David Kite of Dandridge; Clare McBeth of Martin; Corrine Moore of Jonesborough; Tynan Shadle of Lubbock, Texas; Sandy Salmons of Greeneville; Emily Shipsey of Nash-/#66%j-'"%63%8-!"#$%-.4-E8231%6+;-S"#.;-and Erika Witt of Roanoke, Va.

The students developed the initial idea for the exhibit, conducted research, wrote label copy, built artifact mounts and pro-duced the graphics for the text panels.

“The students have done a remarkable amount of research and exhibit design work in a short amount of time,” said Dr.

The students invite the public to come and visit the exhibit and also express thanks to the generous donors who made the exhibit possible. An opening reception

Bedford Paranormal was founded in 2006 by Alan May. Since then, this low-key and experienced team of supernatural sleuths has investi-gated dozens of sites credited with preternatural activity. May’s lifelong interest in the paranormal was fueled by the stories he had heard from others of personal encounters with the other side.

May began his paranormal quest by investigating sites described in these stories as haunted or at which other anomalies were reported. His interest continued to grow until he brought a dedicated team of investi-gators together.

“We were originally called Bed-ford Ghost Investigation Group, but changed our name in 2007 to Bed-ford Paranormal to include anything that cannot be explained by nature or science,” said May.

The team’s name was taken after the town most of them are from, Bedford, Virginia. Members cur-rently include: Alan May, William Ondell, Carrie Mattox, Peggy May, Ronnie Anderson, Rick Youells, Scott Detamore, Paula Davis, Kiley Revis, Georgia Chapman, and Joy Chalk.

follow the current trend of copying the lead of TV investigators, which is commonly seen among many paranormal teams.

“We don’t copy the television shows as far as having a Case Man-ager, Lead Investigator, and so on. We try to operate more as a group of friends or family with a common interest. We don’t have particular titles, partly because I think that a self-imposed title has little mean-ing, if any and partly because we are all ready to take on responsibil-ity whether it is reviewing possible

evidence, interviewing witnesses, etc.,” said May.

“We respect the varied opinions of our members rather than having a blanket statement that, ‘We believe in ...’ ‘Put simply, we are a collection of people who have different levels of belief and outlooks. We also try not to place a ghost or spirit in a position like a trained animal in the circus performing for our enjoy-ment. Rather than just saying, ‘make a noise for us,’ or ‘give us a sign of your presence,’ we try to ask if they need help in some way or need a

message passed on to a descendant or loved one,” said May.

This team is knowledgeable about the equipment and methodologies used in the modern effort to com-municate with the dead. They have high-tech equipment that they use on a regular basis including a DVR system, voice recorders, night vision (80%*83;-UEP-^%6%($*.08B2%$#(-1%6+_-meters, and more. “My favorite piece of equipment is our own physiologi-cal senses and logic. We need to use our senses to be skeptical and reason out what we can, while marveling at

what we can’t demystify,” said May.The team has used this philoso-

phy on every investigation they’ve undertaken. One of their more recent investigations took place at a private residence in Virginia. What made this location stand out for members of Bedford Paranormal was that everyone on the team had a personal experience at the site. What follows is a recounting of the most memo-rable encounters with the unknown experienced by team members that evening.

William Ondell and Rick Youells, were outside of the home when they came face-to-face with something that was impossible to explain. This account is retold by Ondell.GH"%-1*3$-$#0%-Z-385-#$;-#$-583-5%66-

Later that same night, May and Ronnie Anderson were standing about halfway down the wooded driveway conducting an EVP (electronic voice phenomena) ses-sion, when something in the brushy woods started pacing back and forth for about four minutes. Accord-ing to their report, whatever it was couldn’t make up its mind to come to them or to leave. Both men are familiar with the fauna and wildlife native to the area, but could not identify the creature.

Scott Detamore, another member of the team, reported that he had seen a light similar to the one described by Ondell and Youells. During the night, he also captured several very unusual EVPs.

Members of the team have had a number of unusual encounters on investigations over the years. One was on the storied Battleship North Carolina, which is moored in Wilm-ington, North Carolina.

“We were investigating the galley area when Joy (Chalk) made an offer to the spirits that if anyone was there ‘they were welcome to come and sit with her.’ After about ten minutes

she started to wipe the top of her head and look above her. I asked if she was ok and she responded by asking if there was a vent or draft, since she felt her hair move a few times. After checking, we discovered that there was no noticeable circula-tion of air that could have caused her hair to move. We then proceeded to a hatchway, which led to a passage where earlier, I thought I had heard murmured voices. Doug Anderson from Port City Paranormal and I were making our way quietly down the passageway when we suddenly heard Joy call out that her hair had been pulled – hard.”

Yet another encounter with the C8*82.*086-.((7**%+-8$-P.*$-E#4A#2;-Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “We 5%*%-#2-'83%0%2$-==-5"%*%-!#66#80-Howe had been imprisoned during the Civil War. The night had been a long one and we were wrapping up an EVP session when I mentioned that I would leave a bottle of water in the casement, since several people have recorded a voice asking for wa-ter. It wasn’t unsettling at all and felt very positive. It stayed for a few moments then withdrew the way it had come,” recalled May.

Many years ago, true ghost stories inspired a young boy to pursue an interest in investigating the

paranormal. Now, he is a teller of the tales of his own encounters with the otherworld.

May’s team, Bedford Paranormal, is inspired through exceptional experiences with the supernatural to continue their investigations into the realm of preternatural activity. But, no matter how many contacts with the exceptional or numbers of books

he may read on the topic, according to May, “The more I learn about the paranormal the more I realize how little I know.” This is the reality for all of us who are pursuing answers to the unknowable.P.*-0.*%-#24.*08$#.2-8<.7$-T%+-

And seven years ago two Mars Excursion Rovers, called Spirit and Opportunity, were safely landed and guaranteed to last 90

days. Spirit lasted 6 years, while Opportunity is still trucking around a large crater, clicking off more than 22 miles of Martian dirt under its six wheels. The Rover’s mission will last until it, too, eventually succumbs to a power failure.

Meanwhile, three spacecraft orbit Mars right now: Mars Odys-3%D-3#2(%-?@@=;-E8*3-N%(.228#3-sance Orbiter since 2006, and Eu-rope’s Mars Express since 2003. These spacecraft and several .$"%*-.*<#$%*-82+-AD<D-0#33#.23-have helped piece together an ac-curate picture of Mars’ geological history.

Everywhere we look on Mars there is lots of evidence of mas-sive quantities of water on the surface in the form of oceans and lakes, as well as powerful rapids of rushing water that create gul-lies and islands.

A lot of water is trapped in the surface of Mars, posing the question of underground streams and bodies of water that could harbor life. Some water has been seen seeping through cracks in the surface.

The big mystery is where did all the surface water of Mars go? And when was it there?

Planetary scientists believe that Mars was covered at least two-$"#*+3-#2-58$%*-%8*6D-#2-#$3-Q9>-<#6-lion year life. Maybe two billion years ago, Mars was an aquatic world, like Earth today.

So if I had a backyard telescope nearly three billion years ago, I’d see Mars as a blue world, instead of red, much like Earth looks today from outer space.

Just another thought to let the imagination of Mars and its hold on mankind’s mind run wild!

I feel sorry for the citizens of Portland, Oregon if their cops are dumb as the .2%3-C*%3%2$%+-#2-$"%-2%5-160;-Gone. P#*3$-.4-866;-$"%-086%-(.C3-866-6..)-

I suppose the female cop with the “mop” hairdo was supposed to look cutting edge, but instead appears as if she has just climbed out of bed.

Cops aside, Gone is the story of Jill Conway (Amanda Seyfried), a young woman who lives in Portland with her sister Molly (Emily Wickersham), a recovering alcoholic, whose condition was added for dramatic effect as it has nothing to do with the storyline.

Most of the “conditions” lie with Jill, whom we discover was attacked by a man and taken to a forest and dumped in a hole. She escapes, and when she returned home, no one, including the brilliant cops, believed her story and

(.23#+%*%+-"%*-8$$8()%*-8-1B0%2$-.4-"%*-imagination. Of course, adding to the cops disbelief is the fact Jill had spent several years in a psychiatric institution following the death of her parents. examined. Jill was taken out of the institution to

live with Molly, and has been happily doing so while working at a downtown cafe. One night as Jill heads out to work, we know something bad is about to happen, because as Molly is about to fall asleep she stares at a photo of her Mom and Dad and then turns out the light and

falls asleep. All that was missing was thunder.

After an interesting night at work, Jill returns home to discover Molly is nowhere to be found. This occurrence immediately sends Jill into panic mode as she just knows “he” (her attacker) is back! Molly heads to the police depart-ment where the lead model, I mean detective, brushes her off as “crazy” Jill and sends her packing.

As she leaves the station, Jill advises 866-$".3%-5#$"#2-%8*-3".$-3"%-5#66-12+-the bad guy, and her sister without help from the mindless cops. Jill’s investiga-tion takes her to a hardware store, a locksmith, and has her driving various

vehicles while eluding the cops who are after her after they discover she is lose with a gun. The cops even use her sister’s boyfriend, and her psychiatrist to lure Jill into custody. However, our missy is too smart to fall for such tricks, and is soon on her way to confront the bad guy, where else, but in the forest where she once was held captive.

It is often funny watching Jill “elude” the cops, as she runs and jumps around like Angelina Jolie in any of her action 16039-E82D-$#0%3-+7*#2B-$"%-160;-Z-W73$-wanted to scream, “can’t anyone just believe Jill”, but alas, I just continued to munch on my popcorn.

Introduction to Oil Painting, 6 p.m. for 7 weeks, at Shakti in the Mountains. This class

will introduce students to the techniques and “tricks” used by the Old Masters from the

Dutch and Italian Renaissance that were continued through

time. Normally a painting like this would take close to a year

to complete. Audra has cre-ated an introductory method that may be done faster using

some modern materials. Audra will walk you through each step in creating a paint-ing in this tradition. The step-by-step process to this form of painting will show no brush

strokes and create a luminous piece. Not often taught it

modern schools, anyone can take this class, from the begin-ner to the professional artist. Audra taught this technique in Las Cruces, New Mexico

for 9 years and now is pleased to bring it to Johnson City.

Some supplies are provided. If you refer a friend you both will receive a $20 discount. H"%-(.3$-.4-$"%-(6833-#3-c=>@9@@-

New Paradigm is offering a Hips class. The primary

function of the hips is to sup-port the weight of the body in both static (e.g. standing) and dynamic (e.g. walking or run-ning) postures. To accomplish

this they need to be taken through their full range of

motion. We will be releasing, toning and lengthening the

psoas, abductors, adductors, IT band, Gluteus maximus, quadriceps and hamstrings

Not only will the hips re-ceive a “work-in” but the low

NOTE: This column is a sum-marized and “Loaferized” version of a presentation I gave at the Eighth Annual Honors Research Conference at Northeast State Community College on February 23. Obviously, I have spent way too much time watching four seasons of “Mad Men” and read-ing my way through six books about the series. But, I can always get a life later.

In our efforts to understand the meaning of Mad Men, the phe-nomenally successful AMC series, .2-$"%-/%*B%-.4-C*%0#%*#2B-#$3-14$"-season, we should perhaps heed series protagonist Don Draper’s words of wisdom, uttered during the seventh episode of Season One: “I hate to break it to you, but there is no big lie. There is no system. The universe is indifferent.” Wise words, indeed, especially for those who tend to over-analyze and over-interpret works of art.

However, given the richness of this popular series, and its self-conscience reference to culture, we +.-"8/%-8-6#(%23%-$.-12+-+%%C%*-meanings in this continuing story about the careers, families, and dal-liances of Madison Avenue admen +7*#2B-$"%-=ai@39-Z-"8/%-4.72+-$"#3-series to be a very fruitful way to engage in various critical thinking and research activities. In short, we should be giving students (in and out of the classroom) a chance to learn from this series. And here are some suggestions.P#*3$;-Mad Men offers us a fresh

perspective on how we should 72+%*3$82+-"#3$.*D9-P.*-$..-6.2B-we have labored under the tradi-tional textbook account of “facts and dates” without any attempt at understanding the relevance or meaning of them. Mad Men pre-sents history as “lived experience,” an immersion into a time and place different from our own. This per-spective is similar to one advanced by Ron Nief and Tom McBride in their new book, The Mindset Lists Of American History

show of all time, and it offers a wonderful way to engage students in a dialogue about history as a process and a mindset - rather than as a list of bullet points on the pages of rather lifeless textbooks.M%(.2+;-82+-*%68$%+-$.-$"%-1*3$-

point, Mad Men shatters our illu-sions about the value of nostalgia. The virtue of this series is how it asks us to relive the early to mid-’60s without viewing the decade with nostalgia. Mad Men demolishes the “good old days” mythology that has prevented us from understanding history for too long. Through series creator Matt Weiner’s lens, we see the ‘60s warts and all, and we understand how we are still being shaped by the repercussions from that era.

The characters that live and breath within the walls of the Sterling Cooper ad agency do not invite us back to a charming era - they actually warn us against seeing that decade through rose colored glasses.

Mad Men is producing a rather large body of scholarship suggest-ing multiple ways in which to un-derstand the series. To date, there have been six books of scholarly

essays about the show, as well as numerous articles and presenta-tions. More than enough stuff to occupy and engage students with interesting research projects.

Needless to say, I encourage classes that require research to sug-gest Mad Men topics. Yes, it’s still okay to write about Shakespeare, but we should also be taking a look at the literature of our own era. And Mad Men, like classic litera-ture, resonates in so many ways with our own concerns. I display my four-season Mad Men collec-tion like I would any literary work, because that’s precisely what it is.

Last, but not least, Mad Men offers a treasure trove of possibili-ties and opportunities for those of us who are fascinated by how TV shows and movies are produced. Articles and chapters have been written about the show’s light-ing, sets, props, costuming, and reliance on imitating production values present in period TV shows and movies. Next, each seasonal boxed set gives us several historical featurettes that place the episodes into their historical contexts. An entire course, in short, could be based on the production values of the show—a seemingly endless mine of information.

Here’s hoping you will take Mad Men seriously. You don’t, however, need to go to the lengths I have in order to understand the show. After all, it is very entertaining re-gardless of what your take is on its meaning. Monday evenings are generally not at the top of most people’s entertainment list, but Curt Mathson is changing our mindset about Mondays. Known for years as the “One Man Band,” Curt has been
