St: Croix Christiansted, 4th Aug: 1838.

From the Baltimore Chronicle'1 HE RIGHT KIND OF A M.\N FOIt MaYOR.

While the Mayor o! ?vew York was diningwith the corporation of the city on the 4th ofJuly, he was informed that a serious riot was

brewing in the sixth ward. Apologising tothe company, he left the table, rej aired to thescene of uproar, and found an excited crowdof Irishmen on the one hand, and Ame.icnnson the other, engaged in a furious battle F.ethrew himself without hesitation into themelee, gained ati elevated position, and threat-ened the instant interposition of the militaiyforces under his disposal, il'the disturbers < ftiie peace did not immediately disperse. 'I lierioters knew his resolute and vigorous chaiac-ter, and that he would surelv execute histhreat ; and, of course, they immediatelythrew down their weapons and abandonedthe premises. A city can possess 110 greaterblessing than a magistrate of prompt, euei rel-

ic and intrepid character. Courageþÿ perso-nal courageþÿ is the first requisite of such anofficer If he be suspected of a want of thatqualityþÿ if, at a moment of public excitement,he display the least hesitation in periling hisown person, to preserve the public peaceþÿ

the cowardly spirit of insubordination andriot becomes bold and ungovernable, andexcess speedily obtains and maintains the

impetus of outrage and plunder. There isscarcely a riot upon record whose historydoes not show thai a determined and vigorousresistance by the legal nuihorilies at the out-set, would have prevented the waste of hu-man life and property which eusued from theuse of timid expedients in the beginning.þÿ

The strength of the police consists not somuch in its numbers, as in the consciousness,on the part of the turbulently disposed, that itwill not flinch from the discharge of its duty, from a fear of the necessity of killing a tewcuinberers of the earth, and the 'assurancethat, in this necessary rigor, it will be sus-tained by the people and the courts.
