IMZ INTERNAL NEWSFILM FESTIVAL AT WIENER RATHAUSPLATZ 2011
From 2 July – 4 September 2011, more than 520.000 visitors enjoyed the famous
free open-air Film Festival in front of Vienna´s City Hall in Austria.
More than 40 different productions were featured on the 65 festival
evenings, offering a fine selection of music films, including highlights from the fields
of classical music, jazz and world music, as well as a special homage to the art of
Gustav Mahler and Franz Liszt.
All in all, a splendorous celebration of tradition and the contemporary, of opera,
operetta, classical and modern dance, for regulars, youngsters, lovers, experts, sceptics
and novices… The absolute highlights of the festival were the live transmissions of
Beethoven’s Fidelio from the Bavarian State Opera, Munich (with Jonas Kaufmann as
Florestan and Anja Kampe as Leonore) and Verdi’s Simone Boccanegra from the Vienna
State Opera starring Placido Domingo, whose 70th birthday and 50th anniversary of
his stage debut this year provided the perfect occasion for a marvellous Domingo
Special featuring several opera film treasures from the archives. Appearing at the
Rathausplatz after the performance in the Vienna State Opera and singing Wien, Wien
nur Du allein… he topped even the highest expectations of the Viennese Domingo
fans!

SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY
Keeping Score: Mahler DVD Wins
German Record Critics’ Annual Award
Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco
Symphony’s DVD Keeping Score: Mahler –
Origins and Legacy has been awarded the most
prestigious German recording award, Preis der
deutschen Schallplattenkritik , in the
Concerts and Documentaries category. The winning
DVD includes a two-hour documentary on
composer Gustav Mahler, hosted by Tilson Thomas,
San Francisco Symphony Music Director, and two SF
Symphony concert performance programmes:
Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, and A Mahler Journey,
tracing the origins and influences of his music in a
variety of orchestral and vocal works.
“The most recent release in this highly acclaimed series
is devoted to Gustav Mahler, in commemoration of the
100th anniversary of his death,” said Lothar Prox,
Chairman of the German Record Critics' Award
Association, on behalf of the jury. “Like the seven
previous releases, it is the result of the initiative of the
San Francisco Symphony and its superb conductor,
Michael Tilson Thomas. We know of no other major
educational project in the arts since Lenny Bernstein's
legendary television programs with the New York
Philharmonic that has achieved comparable success. The
California team explains and interprets the heritage of
classical music within the framework of a nationwide
mission through multimedia channels – television, radio,
Internet, and various educational programmes for
students and teachers. Their enthusiasm for the project
is convincing and is also apparent in the praiseworthy
portrait of Gustav Mahler, which examines the origins
and legacy of the composer's works during nearly four
hours of film sequences and concert performances.”
The documentaries were shot on location in the
Czech Republic, Austria, and New York, and concert
footage shot was at Davies Symphony Hall in San
Francisco.

Pina To Compete For The Oscar 1
Germany enters the ZDF coproduction Pina by Wim Wenders for
competition for the Foreign Oscar®. The jury, assigned by German
Films, judges the film as a cinematic complete work of art. The film is
seen as conveying a “sensual experience of dance”, being an “excellent
portrait of an important German artist”.
Wim Wenders had started the extraordinary film project, recorded
with 3D technology, while Pina Bausch, the great choreographer and
director of Tanztheater Wuppertal was still alive.
In the middle of preparing the film her sudden death was announced.
The dancers and Wim Wenders decided to finish the film nevertheless
– with a unique result.
The film was premiered this year during Berlinale festival. In
spring 2011 it was awarded as best documentary film with the
German „Filmpreis“. Pina is a coproduction of “Neue Roadmovies”
with German Television ZDF, ZDFtheaterkanal and ARTE. Responsible
editors are Wolfgang Bergmann, Gabriele Heuser and Dieter Schneider.

IMZ MEMBER NEWSCLASART CLASSICS
Dove è amore è gelosia:Historical Reconstruction At The Baroque Theatre Of The Castle Český Krumlov
In coproduction with BVA, NHK and Czech Television, Clasart Classics has just recorded the Baroque opera Dove è amore è gelosia at the castle of the UNESCO world heritage site Český Krumlov. In this reconstruction of a historical opera performance, one can admire the completely preserved theatre stocks such as machinery, costumes and props. In addition, the theatre also boasts a rich library, in which the scores by Giuseppe Scarlatti were found.
Prince Joseph Adam of Schwarzenberg, the Duke of Krumlov, commissioned Scarlatti in 1768 to compose this opera buffa. The first performance, given at the Baroque theatre, was conducted by Scarlatti himself.
Thanks to the surviving documents and objects, it was possible to reconstruct this unique event: Wearing wigs and dressed in original costumes, conductor Vojtěch Spurný and his Schwarzenberg Court Orchestra delicately express the charm and elegance of Scarlatti’s music, while the quartet of outstanding soloists infuse their waggish characters with bright humour.
The opera (approx. 90 min), directed by Ondřej Havelka, was taped in high-definition during live performances presented in September 2011 and is paired with a 52-minute documentary that gives additional information about the history of the site, the theatre and the opera including rehearsal segments.

Perrine Valli (CH), Kaori Ito (GER) and Fearghus
O´Conchuir (IE). This format will be worked out
together with further European partners, thus in
2012 the first round of modul-dance festivals will
be taking place at various venues throughout
Europe…
What is it about? Modul-dance is a multi-annual
cooperation project funded by the European
Commission through the Culture Programme.
Supported by the European Dancehouse
Network and based on a collaboration between
22 European dance houses and media institutions
from 15 countries, modul-dance is aiming at
creating the optimum production conditions for
artists, dancers and choreographers throughout
Europe in order to facilitate their mobility and
promote the dissemination of their work.
Every participating artist has the possibility of
going through 4 module phases, i.e. research,
residency, production and presentation of the
works. A pre-modular programme (carte blanche)
is offered to promising young artists to complete
a short residency at one project partner's dance
house. In parallel to this modular process,
additional artistic programmes are being
organised, such as conferences, artists' think
tanks, film screenings, roadshow activities and
festivals.
Modul-dance runs from June 2010 to December
2014.
