Earlier this month, a delegation from Hong Kong International Airport took part in the Global Airport Development Conference in Amsterdam, the world’s leading airport development and finance event. The opportunity was also taken to discuss the future of aviation with some major airport operators. One important topic discussed was the value of providing an enjoyable, one-stop shop airport experience to passengers in the present mobile era.

Gone are the days when an airport was simply considered as a transport hub that facilitated people’s journeys from one destination to another. Passengers today expect that an airport should be a destination unto

itself, providing them with a comfortable ambience and a myriad of shopping and dining choices. In addition, they are spending more money at airports than ever before.

The rise of e-retail and the ubiquity of mobile phones have heralded a new era of travel, reshaping the retail landscape and consumer behaviour. Our challenge is to integrate the latest technology with the conventional retail environment at the airport. For example, we are using the “HKG My Flight” mobile app to provide travellers with the latest shopping and dining information, and are exploring incorporating beacon technology to further enhance the overall shopping experience.

The operational nature of the airport has traditionally limited the type of products sold. Limited luggage storage space, busy travel schedules and restrictions on carry-on items have all discouraged last-minute purchases at the airport. We are tackling these issues by introducing a free delivery service to Hong Kong, the Mainland, Macao and Taiwan, and will be gradually extending it to other cities and countries. This simple yet practical service has unlocked numerous new business opportunities for us. If we can further leverage mobile technology, I am confident we can go far beyond the “brick and mortar” restriction of airport retail.

The tastes and preferences of modern travellers are constantly evolving, and the aviation industry is under mounting pressure to adapt to these changes and provide the right services and facilities at the right time. On the other hand, these challenges present bountiful business opportunities. We will continue to work closely with our business partners to capture the full potential of the untapped, yet rewarding, aviation industry of the future.

CONVERGENCE OF AIRPORT INDUSTRY LEADERS

A senior delegation from the Airport Authority (AA) recently attended the Global Airport Development (GAD) Conference held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in mid-November.

Throughout its 22-year history, GAD has become an authoritative airport development and finance event bringing together over 400 senior airport industry leaders, including more than 100 global airport operators. This year, the AA joined representatives from leading airport operators including Heathrow Airport Holdings, Schiphol Group, Aéroports de Paris and Fraport.

The event covered a wide range of airport-centric topics including investments, strategies, finance, management and future developments. In adopting a 360-degree view of the industry, the programme also touched upon the emerging trend of airport privatisation and private sector investments on new airport projects.

Speaking at the conference, AA CEO Fred Lam presented an overview of Hong Kong International Airport as an ideal case study on the challenges and opportunities of airport development in today’s aviation environment. In particular, the presentation elaborated on the airport’s future development plan into a three-runway system and its approach to tackling the prevailing challenges it encounters.

In addition to the conference, the AA delegation paid a visit to Schiphol Airport and Frankfurt Airport to exchange views on emerging airport development trends and strengthen ties with their senior management.

On 15 November 2015, the first Hong Kong-built aircraft took to the sky at HKIA. Rewind 18 years ago when the airport witnessed another historic moment as an antique Farman biplane flew over the South Runway on 15 November, 1997. Made of wood and fabric, it was a replica of the “Spirit of Shatin”, the first aircraft to fly in the city and whose maiden Hong Kong flight piloted by pioneer Belgian aviator Charles Van den Born took off on 18 March, 1911. The Farman replica has since been on display at the Meeters and Greeters Hall of Terminal 1 to commemorate the history of aviation in Hong Kong.

A special moment took place at HKIA on 15 November as the city’s first home-built and locally certified aircraft took off on its maiden flight. Aptly named “Inspiration”, the RV-8 single-engine, two-seater airplane was assembled by local airline captain Hank Cheng and his team as a project that began in 2008.

“The ‘Inspiration’ project has been a labour of love for a big group of people over the past seven years and I would like to thank everyone who helped to make my childhood dream become a reality,” Hank Cheng said after the maiden flight.

The “Inspiration” project team extends special thanks to St Paul’s Convent School, Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited, the Civil Aviation Department, the AA, Aviation Security Company Limited, Hong Kong Aviation Club, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Airport Fire Contingent and UMADX, together with countless aviation enthusiasts who have given their support.

The 20-minute inaugural flight took off from the North Runway and hovered around Chek Lap Kok before it landed. After its maiden flight, the aircraft will undergo additional flight tests with the ultimate goal of an around-the-world journey.

this department door each day, in which watermelon alone accounts for three to four

tonnes of food. To maximise efficiency, the aircraft catering

kitchen is equipped with large automatic appliances not normally found in typical kitchens, such as omelette machine, frying and braising machine or automatic tray-setting machine. Nevertheless, some delicate processes, such as making wontons, are completed manually.

Due to the complex production procedures and sheer numbers, making an in-flight meal is no easy feat. As Leo notes, time is the major pressure that every colleague faces every day. If there is adverse weather, then the challenges are even greater. “If a flight is delayed, then a meal that was meant to be breakfast might become dinner. We will have to remake everything in an extremely short period of time.”

Down in the airport terminal basement lies an underground world – the baggage handling hall where a troop of dedicated staff work around the clock to handle thousands of pieces of luggage every day. Inside the zone for handling transfer luggage, Siu Kuen is intently focused on placing stickers on different luggage items as they pass in front of her.

The stickers may look ordinary to a casual observer, but they are actually sophisticated RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) chips, which allow more accurate readings than traditional barcodes. All tags attached to checked-in luggage departing from

Hong Kong are embedded with these chips, allowing the baggage handling system

to quickly access its information. “Since transfer luggage does not

originate from Hong Kong, the chips have to be attached by hand,” said Siu Kuen, as the luggage makes its way on the conveyor belt, and then onwards to its next leg of the journey.

APRON CLEANING MASTERS

In our previous issue, we introduced to you the runway maintenance staff who are responsible for clearing rubber residue on the runway. Similarly, foreign objects have to be removed from the apron area regularly to ensure smooth and unrestricted access. The cleaning crew has three supervisors each for the morning shift and night shift, leading 10 cleaning vehicles respectively to keep the apron spick and span with military-like precision. To clear the foreign objects, a large mop of around 8.5 feet times 6 feet in size, whose function resembles that of a whale’s baleen hair, will be attached to the rear of the vehicle, picking up dirt and rubbish along its way.

“Don’t underestimate this rubble! It could be really dangerous if it is sucked into the airplane engines,” said Ah Lin from the cleaning crews, all the while showing the objects scavenged by the mop. As the cleaning route covers the apron area and two vehicular tunnels that go beneath the South Runway, special attention is needed when the vehicles go close to the aircraft. “It’s important to watch out for what’s happening at the parking stands and taxiing aircraft, as safety is always the top priority on the apron,” driver Kwun Gor emphasises.

The airport is often visitors’ first point of contact where they set foot in a country or city. To ensure the jetsetters feel welcome when travelling through HKIA, the Airport Authority (AA) fosters a culture of customer service excellence at the workplace. In September, the AA launched a Customer Service Courtesy Campaign 2015 (Airport Security) to commend the outstanding frontline airport security staff. The campaign involved onsite assessments on the work of Aviation Security Company Limited staff at passenger access, the transfer area and security screening area.

During an award presentation ceremony on 2 November, the “Best of the Best” honour was bestowed on the campaign’s top performer, while 19 other staff were presented with awards for their outstanding performance.

In its newly released Sustainability Report titled “Growing Together”, the AA details its sustainability management and performance in fiscal year 2014/15, covering the areas of economic contribution, airport growth, operational excellence, environment, as well as people and community, with a particular focus on issues related to staff and airport business partners.

The report highlights how the AA works together with the airport community to contribute to the sustainable growth of HKIA and reinforce the role of the airport as an important asset of Hong Kong. Key initiatives during the year included the continuous investment in staff development and well-being, introduction of a new strategic approach to community investment, and establishment of the HKIA Technovation Board to drive systematic, long-term innovation and technology development at the airport. On the environmental front, the AA worked with restaurants and retailers to organise the HKIA Environmental Management Recognition Scheme to embed environmental practices in their daily operation. The AA also announced it was developing new strategies for carbon and waste management.

The AA has recently received international recognition for its distinctive approach to carbon management at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). In November, the AA received the Silver Award in the Best Innovation for Carbon Reduction category at the 2015 World Responsible Tourism Awards in London. The awards were established in 2004 with the vision to surprise and inspire tourists and the tourism industry by what can be achieved with responsible tourism.

The judges made particular reference to the AA proactively engaging the business partners in its airport-wide carbon reduction programme, and to its success in achieving significant reductions in carbon emissions in 2013. A key element in the success of the programme is the Carbon Audit System, which the AA developed as a common platform to make it easy for business partners to report and monitor their carbon footprint, and for the AA to report on the performance of the whole airport community.

The programme has continued to deliver success, and in 2014 achieved further reduction, cutting emissions by 22.4%, and keeping HKIA firmly on track to achieve its goal of reducing carbon intensity by 25% per workload unit by 2015.

The aviation sector gathered at the Air Transport Action Group Global Sustainable Aviation Summit in Geneva in September to announce the industry’s plans for addressing climate change through a global market-based measure, and to discuss other emerging environmental issues.

During the conference, the Airport Authority (AA) presented its distinctive approach to carbon management in which it collaborates with 46 business partners to reduce airport-wide carbon intensity by 25% between 2008 and 2015. The AA’s approach to carbon management was also included as one of the case studies in Aviation Climate Solutions, which highlighted best practices in carbon management in the global aviation sector.

One particular AA initiative – the replacement of 100,000 traditional lights with LED lights in terminal buildings – was also highlighted by Airports Council International Director General Angela Gittens, in her presentation on the work airports are doing to reduce their emissions.
