Dankie aan die kunstenaars, tegnici, vervaardigers, die lokaalbestuurders, kulturele entrepreneurs, dié wat ver-

andering bring en risiko’s neem, die dromers – julle is Vrynge.

Die gevoel van vreugde en voorreg om aan die vierde Vrynge te werk, is oorweldigend en ek kan nooit genoeg dankie sê aan ieder en elk wat deel is van hierdie reis om hande te neem en Vrynge ‘n plek te maak van verwondering, geleenthede en waar drome en realiteit ineenvloei. 2019 is die mees opwindende jaar en ek hoop dat elkeen deel mag hê aan die vonkelende viering genaamd Vrynge 2019.

Ons het ‘n besondere span, asook plaaslike en nasionale ondersteuners wat verstaan hoe noodsaaklik deelname aan kultuur en kreatiewe uitdrukking is tot ‘n gesonde, gelukkige en welvarende samelewing. Gesamentlik neem ons ons verantwoordelikheid as die huidige beskermhere van die wonder wat Vrynge is, ernstig op.

Hierdie jaar se Vrynge sluit insiggewende werk in met moeilike onderwerpe soos selfmoord, diskriminasie en geestesgesondheid. Daar is produksies wat identiteit, konflik, geslag en politiek verken, vertonings wat gehore verstom sal laat, en ander wat eenvoudig net prettig is. Kortom, die gesamentlike inhoud van hierdie program is soos ‘n kollig op die menslikheid en Vrynge is, om dit eenvoudig te stel, die grootste platform vir vryheid van spraak.

Ons is trots en passievol dat Vrynge sal aanhou om plaaslike kreatiwiteit te ondersteun en te kweek. Ons is ook aktief besig om te veg vir wyer toegang tot Vrynge deur ons programmering en aktivering sodat elkeen aan hierdie besondere fees kan deelneem en dit kan beleef.

Een van die dinge wat Vrynge besonders maak, is sy vele inisiatiewe en die verhoudings en dinamika wat tussen hulle bestaan. Ons sien baie uit na 2019 waar ons selfs meer nougeset sal werk om te vier wat dit beteken om mens te wees. In November verlede jaar het ons in verbinding getree met Lagos se eerste fringe en hierdie jaar hou ons aan om hierdie verhouding te bou om kwaliteit geleenthede vir kunstenaars en gehore te verseker en sodoende kulture te oorbrug en saam iets nuuts te skep.

Ons is steeds op reis om volgehoue wêreldwye mobiliteit, skakeling en gesprek tussen kunstenaars te verseker. Vrynge 2019 gee ons rede om te vier, dinge opnuut voor te stel, ambisieus te wees en aan te hou om die wêreld deur kultuur te verbind en ons sien uit om saam met julle fees te vier.

Ek wil graag almal van harte uitnooi om deel te wees van hierdie opwindende avontuur – hetsy dit nou is om ‘n kaartjie te koop of net ‘n kunstenaar se plasing te her-tweet (#vrynge, noudat jy oppie bol is). Julle het net soveel aandeel aan Vrynge as enigiemand anders. Maak hierdie jou plek!

The sense of pleasure and privilege to work on the fourth Vrynge is overwhelming and I can never say thank you enough to everyone who has been part of the journey to take hands and make Vrynge a place of wonder, opportunities and where dreams and reality collide. 2019 is the most exciting year and I hope that everyone may share in the glimmer of celebration that is Vrynge 2019.

We have an excellent team, and local and national backers who understand how vital participation in culture and creative expression is to a healthy, happy and prosperous society. Collectively, we take our responsibility as the current custodians of the phenomenon that is Vrynge, seriously.

This year’s Vrynge includes enlightening work covering difficult subjects like suicide, discrimination, and mental health. There are productions that explore identity, conflict, gender and politics, shows that will leave audiences astonished, and some that are simply fun. In short, the collective content of this programme is like a spotlight on humanity and Vrynge is quite simply the greatest platform for freedom of expression. We are proud and passionate that Vrynge continues to support and nurture local creativity. We are also actively championing wider access to Vrynge through our programming and activations so that everyone can participate in and experience this extraordinary festival.

One of the things that makes Vrynge exceptional is its many initiatives and the relationships and dynamics that exist between them. We are very much looking forward to 2019 where we will be working even more closely to celebrate what it means to be human. In November last year, we connected with Lagos’ first fringe in Nigeria and this year, we’re continuing building the relationship to ensure quality opportunities for artists and audiences alike, bridging cultures and creating something new, together.

We’re still on the journey to ensure that global mobility, connection and conversation between artists and performers is sustained. Vrynge 2019 gives us cause to celebrate, reimagine, be ambitious and keep connecting the world through culture and we look forward to celebrating with you.

I wholeheartedly invite everyone to be part of this exciting adventure – whether it is buying a ticket or just retweeting an artist’s post (#vrynge, while you’re at it). You have as much ownership of Vrynge as anyone else. Make this your space!

Die B2B art-kunsuitruilprogram tussen Bloemfontein (Suid Afrika) en Brighton (VK) word by Vrynge met neXus geloods, en bestaan uit ‘n installasie wat die talente van vier kunstenaars uit elke streek in dié lande sal vertoon. Die verbinding tussen werklike en fiktiewe sosiale, politieke en kulturele aspekte sal in hierdie werke ondersoek word. Die uitstalling sal dan na die Verenigde Koninkryk verskuif en gedurende die Brighton Pride-seisoen van 29 Julie tot 11 Augustus vertoon word.

The BN2 art exchange programme between Bloemfontein (South Africa) and Brighton (UK) is being piloted at Vrynge with neXus, an installation featuring the talents of four artists from each region exploring real and imagined social, political and cultural connections. The exhibition will travel to the UK throughout the Brighton Pride season between 29 July to 11 August.

neXus is co-curated by socially engaged arts agency urbanflo creative and artist Vian Roos, whose work will be appearing alongside international guest artists including: Elliss Lewin-Turner, Estabrak Al-Ansari, Gil Mualem-Doron, Heather Glazzard, Lloyd van Schalkwyk, Lyrene Kühn-Botma and Teboho Mokhothu.

This print portfolio visually encapsulates traditional stories from the !Xun and Khwe first peoples. The project was realised through a partnership between Free State Arts & Health, the National Association of Childcare Workers (NACCW) in Kimberley, Isibindi Youth Centre in Platfontein, and the William Humprey Art Gallery (WHAG) in Kimberley. The prints were made by young artists from Platfontein as part of a generational cohesion project that facilitated the transfer of cultural narratives from the older generation to the younger. In the last quarter of 2019, the Platfontein Print Project will produce a whole new body of work with the support of our partners on the ground and with additional help from the National Heritage Council.

A mass exhibition of 150 art blocks showcasing unique and quality original art by new breed Free State Artists, including winners and top artists from the Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition. Artists will be producing additional art blocks live at the exhibition, offering the public an immersive experience of the artist and the process of artistic creation. There will also be an opportunity to purchase an original art block to start building your own unique art collection, as well as support our local artists.

The series examines a context in which a single work could transcend itself. The images of smoke on glass depict figures of regular human proportion that thins out the further it moves away from the centre, shining light on the work from any side, however, reveals another dimension however: shadows projected and cast onto an adjacent wall turns contorted figures into depictions of heroes, as if to say that Beauty is achieved in transformation only when light is added.

Raku is ‘n passievolle Japanese vuringsmetode. Deelnemers kies ‘n reeds gevuurde kleipotjie, verf dit met metale en glasure uit moeder aarde. Die potte word dan in ‘n gasoond gebak, uitgehaal op 1000 grade met tange, dan word dit in reduksiemateriaal begrawe. Vuur, Water, Wind en Klei word die skeppende elemente van hierdie unieke, energieke, asemrowende tegniek. Kom beleef ‘n onvergeetlike ervaring.

Raku is an exciting Japanese firing method. Participants choose pre-fired pots, paint them with metals and glazes from earth, place them into a hot kiln, heated up to about 1000 degree Celsius, and remove them using raku tongs. They are then placed into combustion, reduction material. Fire, Water, Wind and Clay become the creating elements for this magical, colourful technique. Come and enjoy this mind blowing experience.

The Keepsakery is a hand-drawn virtual reality environment you can walk through and, as you do, “touch” and “hold” virtual 3D scans of people’s domestic treasures and hear recordings of their stories. This year, the artists will be showing a version of the work developed in Australia and will be inviting the audience – and the objects they love – to be part of a version of the work to be shown at the Festival in 2020.

Come and sit on the strange and wonderful bench that we have built, and watch our eight stories of love, mortality, learning, pride, determination, cultural loss, empowerment… and building with waste! Through this you can feel your connection to nature, your past, your culture, your identity. Sit on the bench and realise – even the bench has a story to tell…

Emily Hobhouse is beroemd vir haar noodlenigingswerk in die konsentrasiekampe van die Suid-Afrikaanse Oorlog. Hierdie uitstalling werp lig op Emily Hobhouse se minder bekende bydrae tot internasionale vrede, filantropie en Suid-Afrikaanse politiek in die na-oorlogse periode, insluitend haar werk in Duitsland ná die Eerste Wêreldoorlog. Deur haar merkwaardige geskrifte, en mees intens deur haar boek War Without Glamour, word die verhaal van haar lewenslange verbintenis tot die blootlegging van die vernietigende impak van oorlog op burgerlikes vertel. Dokumente wat nuut aan die Bodleian-biblioteek in Oxford geskenk is, word naas briewe, skilderye en artefakte uit internasionale versamelings uitgestal.

Emily Hobhouse is celebrated for her relief work in the concentration camps of the South African War. This exhibition uncovers Emily Hobhouse’s less well-known contribution to international peace, humanitarianism, and South African politics in the post-war period, including her work in Germany following the First World War. Through her remarkable writings - most vividly her book War Without Glamour - it tells the story of her lifelong commitment to reveal the devastating impact of war on civilians. Newly-donated papers at the Bodleian Library in Oxford are showcased alongside letters, paintings and artefacts from international collections.

Tydens hul besoek sal die troep ook die Vrystaat Kunstefees (1-7 Julie) beleef en optree by die Vrynge.

Tasmanian Aboriginal Dance Troupe Pakana Kanaplila have been invited to lead a cultural exchange residency program in the lead up to the 2019 Vrystaat Festival in Bloemfontein, South Africa. This application is to support three senior members of Pakana Kanaplila to visit South Africa from 22 June to 7 July 2019. While there, the troupe will facilitate a one week cultural exchange residency program (24 - 30 June) designed to sensitively restore and revive ancient traditional practices, in a twenty first century context. This residency will lay the groundwork for a cross cultural performance event for the 2020 Vrystaat Festival. During their visit, the troupe will also experience the Vrystaat Arts Festival (1-7th July) and perform in the Vrystaat Vrynge Festival.

Mama contains elements of physical theatre, object theatre, storytelling and musical performance poetry that confronts issues such as identity, language, cultural and self-exploration, freedom of expression and the state of being.

Gerrie Harmse en Iahn van Rooyen is twee karakters wat ‘n produk van draaldade geword het. Hulle vertolk twee sukkelende akteurs wat die industrie van uitvoerende kunste kritiseer en blameer vir al hulle eie opvallende tekortkominge, wat sodoende gepaard gaan met die misbruik van onheilspellende verversings, wat d.m.v. suggestie uitgebeeld word. Hulle deins heen en weer tussen die hede en ‘n robotiese verlede waarin die heersende en opposisie regeringspartye van 1991 ook self gedraal, nog versuim het om onderskeie samesmeltings en konstruktiewe, selfs opbouende en daadwerklike aksie te doen, waarmee hulle volgelinge hul vertrou het.

Gerrie Harmse and Iahn van Rooyen are two characters who have become a product of procrastination. They play the roles of two struggling actors who criticize the industry of the performing arts and blames all of their own flaws and inadequacies on the industry. Dealing with the abuse of ominous refreshments, which are portrayed through suggestion, they reel back and forth between the present and a robotic past in which the ruling and opposition government parties in who self-lingered, failed to take various mergers, constructive and purposeful action with which the people trusted them with.

Naked is an ongoing conversation between the body and memory. It examines the body as a repository for trauma and explores the connection on how time affects our memories. It is based on an auto biographical story of a young Nigerian Woman’s journey in life seen through the lens of her career and relationships. Naked first showed at the Lagos Theatre Festival in March 2018 to glowing reviews and has since been on a city-wide tour to different venues in Lagos, Nigeria.

This psychological drama tells the story of the LeRoux family. Why is Katryn back in town and why is there always problems when she is at home. What happened to Jannie and why is he disabled? The story unfolds while one crisis after the other gets in the way. This psychological drama will keep the audience on the edge of their chairs.

On the outskirts of Cape Town, between two flats, a washing line hangs filled with clothes, bedding and other odds and ends. It is here where multiple characters’ lives unfold and intertwine amongst one another. The joy found within the simplicity of living, as well as the negotiation of poverty is explored through the eyes of two young people. Questions around how we are raised, our positionality in life and the path that lies ahead of us is explored through the pieces of tattered clothing, until nothing remains.

Die 2019-wenner van die Beste van die Zabalaza-teaterfees, Ukuwa Kwe Nkaba, wat in isiXhosa met Engels hier en daar opgevoer word, handel oor die stryd van vroue wat hul kinders groot maak sonder die teenwoordigheid van hul vaders. Alhoewel die mans nog lewe, is hulle nie deel van die kinders se lewens nie. Hierdie kinders weet nie altyd wie hul vaders is nie. Soos die kinders grootword, het hulle antwoorde nodig. Die toneelspel roep moeders om die waarheid te vertel, maak nie saak hoe pynlik nie.

The 2019 Best of Zabalaza Theatre Festival winner, Ukuwa Kwe Nkaba, performed in isiXhosa and some English, deals with the struggles of women who raise their children without the presence of the fathers. While these men are around, they do not form part of their lives. In fact, often these children do not know who their fathers are. However, as the kids grow up, they need answers. The play calls for mothers to tell the truth, no matter how painful.

Sy word wakker. Hoekom is sy vasgebind? Verward en vreesbevange, bevind sy haarself in ‘n onbekende kelder. Sy word sielkundig en emosioneel gemartel deur ‘n oënskynlike liefdevolle paartjie. Al hoop tot haar beskikking, is die stem uit die kamer langsaan. Die stem probeer haar kalm hou. Die gehoor word saam met die gevangene op ‘n wipplankrit van marteling gevat, terwyl almal probeer bepaal waarom sy ontvoer is. Hoe sterk is ons wilskrag, ons uithouvermoë? Wanneer beryk jy jou limiet?

A confused and frightened lady wake to find herself restrained in a basement. She’s tormented by a seemingly loving couple and can’t understand why. She befriends a voice in the adjacent room who tries to keep her grounded. The audience joins the lady on her journey of torment as she tries to piece together the cause of her seemingly unprovoked abduction. They experience the resilience and strength of the human spirit while also being reminded that everyone has their limit.

Sus van is ’n monoloog van ’n antiheld, ’n ikoon vir mense wat nie dink in terme van groot ideale nie, maar in terme van klein belange en sentiment en die emosionele motief belangriker geag as die ideologie. De tekst is gebaseer op die mitologiese figuur Isméne wat (soos baie vroue) in die skadu van ’n beroemde suster (Antigone) gelewe het. Haar lewe word nie deur groot en heroïese heldedade gekenmerk nie. Sy doen gewoon wat vir haar (voor-) gesê en -geskryf word - ’n outlaw wat drie duisend jaar na haar dood vanuit die graf haar lewe in ’n soort terugflits verwoord. (Let wel: die voorstelling is ‘n lees van die teks)

Sus van is a monologue of an anti-hero, an icon who doesn’t think in terms of greater ideals, but in terms of smaller interests and sentiment and who regards the emotional motive more important than the ideology. The text is based on the mythological figure Ismene, who (like many women) lived in the shadow of a famous sister (Antigone). Her life is not characterised by great and heroic acts. She merely does what is dictated and prescribed to her – an outlaw who articulates (from the grave) her life in a kind of flashback three thousand years after her passing away. (Take note: the presentation is a reading of a text).

Ook te sien is ‘n merkwaardige en roerende gesproke woord-groep uit Barbados en twee multidissiplinêre kunstenaars wie dans en eksperimentele kuns respektiewelik gebruik om hul gehore aan te raak. Hierdie mengsel van oor die 40 kunstenaars is die grootste gebeurlikheid om ooit die Karibies te verlaat om deel te neem aan die Vrystaat Kunstefees. Die boodskappe, die energie en die liefde wat hulle met jou moet deel mag nie gemis word nie – hierdie mag dalk net ‘n eenmalige ervaring wees!

Three sets of Jamaican musicians, whose music fuses a vibrant and eclectic mix of Jamaica’s Reggae foundation, with genres from around the world. Also featured an amazing and emotive poetry and spoken word group from Barbados and two multidisciplinary artists who use interpretational dance and experimental art respectively, to connect with their audiences. This mix of over 40 artists is the largest contingency to ever leave the Caribbean to participate in the Vrystaat Art Festival. This may just be a once in a lifetime experience!

Miss and Mr Vrystaat Arts Festival will be running for the third consecutive year. This year our official charity is the Freestate Residential Care Centre. The prelims were held on the 4th of May 2019 in Mimosa Mall and there 48 finalists were chosen between the ages of 4-24.

Katinka Heyns se loopbaan het in die gefragmenteerde Suid-Afrikaanse filmbedryf van die laat 1960’s begin toe rolprente die Afrikaner op ’n sterk idealistiese wyse uitgebeeld het. Heyns gebruik haar films en reekse om die toestand van vrouwees visueel uit te beeld. Truida Louw and Anna Neethling-Pohl het ‘n sterk rol in Heyns se vormingsjare gespeel op haar beurt het sy weer ‘n sterk invloed gehad op kontemporêre vroueregisseurs soos Meg Rickards (Tess), René van Rooyen (Mooirivier, Toorbos), en Hanneke Schutte (Jimmy in Pienk, Meerkat Maantuig).

Katinka Heyns’s career began in the fragmented South African film industry of the late 1960’s where “films about Afrikaners were encouraged to represent the culture and community in its most idealized form: morally pure women and upright men”. Heyns considers the condition of women through her visual narratives. Whilst Heyns was strongly influenced by Truida Louw and Anna Neethling-Pohl, she had a profound influence on contemporary film directors, such as Meg Rickards (Tess), René van Rooyen (Mooirivier, Toorbos), and Hanneke Schutte (Jimmy in Pienk, Meerkat Maantuig).

Hierdie gesprek is ‘n geleentheid om lisensies binne die kunste- en teateromgewing beter te verstaan en ons sal ook verduidelik hoe outeurs hul intellektuele eiendom beter kan beskerm. Die gesprek is ook ‘n geleentheid vir teaterprodusente en drama-onderwysers om te leer hoe die lisensiëringsekosisteem werk, hoe om te verseker dat hulle hul produksies korrek lisensieer en om tekste aan te koop.

The Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation is proud to host a workshop on Intellectual Property and Copyright for Authors and Playwrights. This talk will be aimed at understanding licensing within the art and theatre environment and offer a guide to authors on how to protect their intellectual property. This will also be an opportunity for producers and drama teachers to learn how the licensing ecosystem works, how to ensure they are licensing their productions correctly, and to purchase scripts.

TIZA GARLAND is ‘n medeprofessor van teater by die Universiteit van Florida waar sy in die MFA-, BFA- en BA-programme onderrig. Haar primêre onderrigverantwoordelikhede sluit in die beweging vir die akteur-kursusse, verhooggevegte, en periode-style beweging. Sy was ‘n Internasionale fisieke teater- en bewegingwerkswinkelleier vir die instelling: IUGTE International Lab Summerschool and Conference in Leitring bei Leibnitz.

Tydens die Vrystaat Kunstefees sal gratis werkswinkels aangebied word vir onbevoorregte kunstenaars van die gemeenskap as deel van die Gemeenskapsbetrokkenheidprogram vir die Departement Drama- en Teaterkuns aan die UV.

TIZA GARLAND is an Associate Professor of Theatre at the University of Florida where she teaches in the MFA, BFA, and BA programs. Her primary teaching responsibilities including teaching the Movement for the Actor courses, stage Combat, and Period styles Movement.

She was an International Physical Theatre and Movement workshop leader for the Institution: IUGTE International lab Summerschool and Conference in Leitring bei Leibnitz

To amend the Copyright Act, 1978, so as to define certain words and

expressions; to allow for the reproduction of copyright work; to provide for the

protection of copyright in artistic work; to provide for the accreditation of

Collecting Societies; to provide for the procedure for settlement of royalties

disputes; to allow fair use of copyright work; to provide for access to copyright

works by persons with disabilities; to provide for the protection of ownership

in respect of orphan works; to strengthen the powers and functions of the

Copyright tribunal; to provide for prohibited conduct in respect of

technological protection measures; to provide for prohibited conduct in respect

of copyright management information; to provide for management of digital

rights; to provide for certain new offences; and to provide for matters

connected therewith.

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, as

follows:—

Amendment of section 1 of Act 98 of 1978, as amended by section 1 of Act 56

of 1980, section 1 of Act 66 of 1983, section 1 of Act 52 of 1984, section 1 of Act

13 of 1988, section 1 of Act 125 of 1992, section 50 of Act 38 of 1997, section 1 of

Act 9 of 2002, section 224 of Act 71 of 2008 and section 3 of Act 28 of 2013

1. Section 1 of the Copyright Act, 1978 (hereinafter referred to as ‘‘the principal

Act’’), is hereby amended—

(a) by the insertion before the definition of ‘‘adaptation’’ of the following

definition:

‘‘ ‘accessible format copy’ means a copy of a work in an alternative manner

or form which gives a person with a disability access to the work and which

permits such person to have access as feasibly and comfortably as a person

without disability;’’;

(b) by the insertion after the definition of ‘‘artistic work’’ of the following

definition:

‘‘ ‘audiovisual work’ means embodiment of moving images, whether or not

accompanied by sounds or by the representations thereof, from which either

can be perceived, reproduced or communicated through a device, and includes

a cinematographic film;’’;

(c) by the insertion after the definition of ‘‘collecting society’’ of the following

definition:

‘‘ ‘commercial’ means the obtaining of direct economic advantage or

financial gain in connection with a business or trade;’’;

(d) by the insertion after the definition of ‘‘community protocol’’ of the following

definition:

‘‘ ‘Companies Act’ means the Companies Act, 2008 (Act No. 71 of 2008);’’;

(e) by the insertion after the definition of ‘‘copyright’’ of the following definition:

‘‘ ‘copyright management information’ means information attached to or

embodied in a copy of a work that—

(a) identifies the work and its author or copyright owner; or

(b) identifies or indicates some or all of the terms and conditions for using

the work or indicates that the use of the work is subject to terms and

conditions;’’;

(f) by the insertion after the definition of ‘‘National Trust’’ of the following

definitions:

‘‘ ‘open licence’ means a royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable

copyright licence granting the public permission to do an act for which the

permission of the owner of copyright, or the author, is required;

‘orphan work’ means a work in which copyright subsists and the owner

of a right in that work—

(a) cannot be identified; or
