AANNDDRREEAA KKOOEEHHLL

My name is Andrea, I am 25 years old and about to finish my MPH at the University of Haifa. I am from Germany and finished my Bachelor in Speech therapy two years ago. I gained work experiences for a couple of months and enjoyed working with my patients a lot. At the same time I felt that there is much more I can learn in the field of Public Health. So I applied for the Master program and got finally accepted at the Haifa University. I enjoyed the international program a lot, talking to people from all over the world every day. Israel is an amazing country to learn about culture, language and people. The MPH was exactly what I was looking for. I do understand now Public Health, the challenges and the need for professional work all over the world. My final degree offers me working opportunities on national and international level. Even if I still don’t know right now what I want to focus on in my future I am very positive to find a job I can enjoy and apply the skills I gained in my Master program. I am glad I had the opportunity to learn from such a professional Team and be part of a diverse group of people that became my friends.

I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in East-Asian Studies and Political Science from the University of Montreal. During my undergraduate studies, I specialized in Japanese studies, During my second year as an undergraduate student, I had the privilege of studying at Waseda University (Tokyo, Japan). As I immersed myself in the Japanese culture, I began learning about and studying the various social issues and inequalities that were prevalent in the region, with particular interest in issues regarding human rights, women’s rights, and economic inequalities. After graduating from the University of Montreal, I decided to devotemy time teaching Pilates, and to participate in Gyrotonic trainings, techniques that alleviate pain and provide clients with higher mobility, coordination and flexibility. Although teaching movement was a beautiful experience, I felt as though I was missing something. I was still constantly thinking about the courses that I had learned in my undergraduate studies and decided to reorient myself to social work, where I graduated with my MSW from the New York University in May of 2017.

During my studies, I had the opportunity to intern at Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, which provided cash assistance to vulnerable families and individuals as well as many Holocaust survivors. During the summer of 2016, I interned at the United Nations Education Science and Cultural Organization in the Social and Human Sciences Sector, Research & Policy Foresight in Paris, working on social inclusion initiatives and assisted in the planning, organization, and delivery of an international conference that focused on addressing issues resulting from migration. I was also able to work with Health Right International (New York) operating as a Case Management Intern, and providing services for survivors of torture by assessing their needs and learning about the work specific to individuals who have had traumatic experiences.

Although social work has taught me various methods and frameworks for clinical intervention, I felt as though my curricula was lacking in terms of community work, research, administration, policy and international perspectives. The MPH program at Haifa University really provided me with these tools with classes ranging from epidemiology to biostatistics as well as courses on leadership and organizational management. Over the year, I had the chance to volunteer at Physicians for Human Rights in Jaffa and assist in researching literature and drafting a report on the access to health care within the Canadian and French prison system.

My name is Htoi Zawng Naw. I am a dentist from northern part of Myanmar called Kachin State. I hold three degrees; a Master of Public Health in Global Health Leadership and Administration Degree from the University of Haifa, a Bachelor of Dental Medicine Degree from the University of Dental Medicine in Yangon, Myanmar and an International Advanced Diploma In Computer Studies from the National Computing Centre, in the United Kingdom.

Over the years, I have worked as a Dentist, Senior Dental Nurse, and Volunteer Dentist in Myanmar, Singapore and the Philippines. My country is currently engaged in a civil war for about seven years. This affected the country’s public health system as many people were internally displaced daily. The impact of the civil war also resulted in many people lacking food and shelter, peace, education and many health-related problems such as fever and diarrhea. I chose to study global health because the world has become a global village. I aim to connect with more public health professionals and learn how to deal with current health problems around the world.

During my stay in Haifa, I was able to do my 4-month practicum project at Rambam Hospital. I was involved in one of the hospital project to assess the impact of the Case Manager in promoting patient health which will influence the quality and service measures in the hospital. The purpose of my practicum is to apply the theory that I have learned during the course by conducting literature review and observations during hospital visitation. I have learned invaluable experiences through my practicum project.

Finally, I plan to serve in the community or mission hospital as the MPH degree will empower me with knowledge and skills to help displaced people more effectively. My desire is to become a public health advisor which will enable me to live out my passion of advocating for health equity for all human beings.

My name is Juliane Esselbruegge and I’m from Germany. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy in 2016. During my professional experience as a physiotherapist, I started to develop a stronger interest for public/global health. After a year of work experience, I took advantage of the opportunity to start my MPH at the University of Haifa. This experience could have not been any better! Sitting in an international classroom with students from all over the world made that year culturally very interesting and inspiring. Besides the interesting academic input I gained, I enjoyed the beauty of Israel and took the opportunity to travel around! It was truly a great year and I appreciate every experience deeply. I believe that this degree will open many doors for me and will give me numerous opportunities to work globally.

My name is Michael Cygler and I am from Florida, United States. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology/neuroscience and continued my education to become a physician. I’ve worked as a doctor, advocate, and educator. Over the years, I felt as though I can do more than treat one patient at a time and a growing passion for public health emerged. Having developed a strong connection to the State of Israel over many years, I could not think of a better place to immerse myself in my public health studies.

The University of Haifa MPH program has afforded me the perfect environment to learn from world-renowned experts and study with an extremely diverse and talented group of individuals coming from eight countries. Because of the small class size, perhaps the best part of the entire experience has been the opportunity to foster close relationships with my professors that will continue into the future.

I arrived in Israel with a partially filled toolbox. Now, as I complete my MPH studies, I have not only been provided with a set of additional tools, but my dedicated professors have also ensured I have the ability to use them. As I continue on my life journey, with my newfound knowledge and skill set and a personal commitment to lifelong learning, I feel much more equipped to make my contribution to ‘tikkun olam’. When I’m not studying or working I enjoy traveling, playing guitar, and spending time in nature.

My name is Monica and I am 26 years old. I born in a small village in Northern Italy and I’ve been leaving there for most of my life. I decided at 18 that I wanted to become a nurse and so I enrolled at the University of Verona for the academic year 2010/2011. My experience at the university hospital was extremely meaningful and exciting and I could enjoy every single moment of learning and practicing. I graduated in 2013 and I started to work in a private cardiologic clinic, moving after to a private and to a public hospital. As a nurse my bread and butter was caring for people with health, social and mental problems. In this life changing career path I have chosen for myself, I started to grasp the huge and fascinating complexity of human life and experience the satisfaction, pain, and joy that comes from helping a patient and their family.

Despite the great fulfillment I get out of these years at work, my thirst has not been quenched. I desire to do more and more and I decided so to join the Global Health Leadership and Administration MPH of Haifa University. I did so for different reasons. First of all I wanted to understand how to promote a change in a static environment. Every day I saw a lack of leadership in my country and this deep deficiency is so real in the Italian society and can be observed in politics and in the work place.

The MPH gave me the theoretical principles of leadership and made me understand how actual leaders dealt with the obstacles they encountered in their careers. I understood also that I needed instruments that could allow me to understand the reality around me to promote, then, the changes that I aimed for. In our lessons I could so learn Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Research Method and understand how it is possible to investigate the association that exist between social, biological, environmental factors and health.

This amazing journey is coming to a conclusion and there is not enough space here to describe everything that I learnt in the past year. I come out from the MPH enriched and full of enthusiasm for my future career. I want to continue study Medicine and I would like to do so here in Israel, a country full of diversity, challenges and possibilities.

My name is Rania Taiseer Abdullah, I am from Jordan and I am a physician in well-child clinics .After many years of practice I have decided to pursuit an academic path .I was interested in Public and global health, and my choice in the I-MPH program at the university was a perfect choice for me. The program provided a quality and comprehensive teaching on leadership in the context of current Public and global health issues, through learning, experience and communication.

Throughout the program I had the privilege to learn from two great mentors- Professor Green and Professor Schuster, listen to world leaders in the field to global health sharing their personal experience, enjoyed the teaching of a highly qualified staff with their interesting and interactive teaching styles, had invaluable experiences in my practical projects that I was required to do, and the help and support I got from the administration made everything easy and accessible. Being part of a class with such cultural diversity was very much enlightening on both academic and personal levels. I ended up having friends all over the world. With my degree, I am taking my career and my future expectations to the next level and the sky is the limit.

Public health promotion and increasing awareness to health threatening factors was something I grew up into from home, my late father was very active in this field having major concerns regarding diabetes amongst Arab Israeli sector.

After attending dental school and working for several years, I decided to continue in that path and do something to continue minimizing inequalities between the Jewish and Arab sectors in Israel, I started looking for programs that would expand my knowledge and give me tools to promote and execute plans I had to minimize inequalities within the Israeli population and especially amongst the Arab Israeli sector. The program at the University of Haifa gave me great tools and personal guidance from the professors not only on project ideas and their management but also future career opportunities.

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane. With that being said my name is Thet George Duchi. I am Nigerian. I am a Cuban trained- physician. I am pursuing an MPH as a means of addressing the significant health disparities on the African Continent. I am passionate in my belief that health is a human right - and committed to a future of promoting that right for all as a public health professional. Based on the insights and knowledge acquired, my goal is to have a lead role in developing and implementing policy to improve healthcare systems. These are some of the reasons why I am building my capacity in Public health, so that I can use the knowledge to contribute my quota towards achieving the health related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
