We just love to see our children with smiles on their

faces, especially when those faces are marked in

smudges of paint! Art helps brighten a child’s day bybringing relaxation and the freedom of expression. Art can also make our

children feel more at home when they sit around a table in our playroom to

make a picture for Mommy or Daddy.

Staff from our Child Life Department regularly help children make gorgeous

arts and crafts. Children and adolescents of all ages with a variety of physical

and mental health illnesses are also able to express themselves through art

with support from an art therapist.

The Janeway is full of art wherever you go!

Many of the children’s rooms are covered withtheir very own masterpieces, and our

examination rooms and hallways are adorned

    with some of the most

    stunning murals!

B  is for BABIES Oh baby! Did you know that there are nearly 6,000 births

per year at the Janeway? Each day, we have the privilege

of seeing babies born and being cared for from all around

    Newfoundland and Labrador!

Since the Old Janeway Hospital moved to the Health Sciences

Complex in 2001, both mothers and babies who require

neonatal intensive-care can be together in the

same building - a great comfort to new families!

C  is for CHILDREN Children are what the Janeway is all about! As the tertiary pediatric care

centre in Newfoundland and Labrador, each year we admit over 2,650

patients to hospital; see up to 60,000 outpatients clinic visits; and care for over

    30,000 emergency department patients.

But that’s not all! We also provide specialized pediatric care to the children

of St. Pierre and Miquelon! The care we provide is always family-centered,

supporting both the child and family in their medical journey.

D  is for DOCTORS What’s up Doc? Pediatricians and pediatric surgeons can

be found everywhere at the Janeway, many of which

have been locally trained at Memorial University’s Faculty

of Medicine! The Janeway is home to approximately

150 highly skilled physicians who provide care and

services within multiple pediatric specialties, such as

child development, radiology, adolescents, neonatal care,

    dentistry, orthopedics, neurology, oncology, cardiology,

    psychiatry, and more!

E  is for EVENTS If anyone knows how to have fun, it’s our Child Life Department! To make

sure that every hospital stay is special for our children and their families, our staff organize and host a wide range of events throughout the year.

Staff of the Child Life Department have the very important job of marking

the celebration of incredible medical milestones, birthdays, special events

and big holidays such as Easter and Christmas. But that’s not all, at t he

Janeway, we even have our own concerts!

It would be impossible to list all of the unbelievable events that we have

organized over the past 50 years. These events are just

as special and memorable to our staff as they

are to our children and their families!

F  is for FAMILY & FRIENDS Family and friends are the people who make our

world go round! We understand the importance of

families and friends in our children’s lives, and that is

why they are always welcome at our “home!”

When your child is a patient at the Janeway, your

family becomes part of ours. We have some very

special places to enjoy time together with friends

and family in and around our hospital, such as at our

St. John’s Maple Leaf Play Garden, playroom,

    and more!

G  is for GENERATIONS Our family tree is growing! The

Janeway has been a part of

    Newfoundland and Labrador’s history

for 50 years, providing pediatric care

to thousands of children from all

    communities across Newfoundland

    and Labrador!

Over the last five decades, we have

cared for hundreds of thousands of

children, and now we are seeing some

of our first generation of patients return

with their children and even grandchildren!

H  is for HISTORY  The Janeway Hospital was named in honour of American pediatrician, Dr. Charles

Alderson Janeway. Dr. Janeway was a pioneer in modern science of immunology,

and was instrumental in expanding the Boston Children’s Hospital into a tertiary

care centre. One of our local physicians, Dr. Clifton Joy, invited Dr. Janeway to St.

John’s to look at options for the care of children. Dr. Janeway became an advocate for

establishing a children’s health-care facility in Newfoundland and Labrador, and with

the support of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Janeway Hospital

    was established in 1966.

The Janeway Hospital was originally located in the former Pepperrell Air Force Base

hospital in Pleasantville in St. John’s, and officially opened its doors on August 9, 1966.

With the opening of a new, state-of-the-art building

as part of the Health Sciences Complex in 2001,

the name of the facility was adapted to

what is known today as the Janeway

    Children’s Health and Rehabilitation

    Centre in St. John’s.

Children have the special ability to inspire from

the very moment they are born, when uttering

their first works, taking their first steps, or simply

in everyday situations. Each day, we watch as

our children work through some very difficult

medical obstacles and as they overcome illnesses

    that seemed to be unbeatable.

We consider ourselves the luckiest of all because

we receive the gift of being inspired by

the strength of our children and their families.

    J  is for JANEWAY SCHOOL

Did you know that every year, over 230 children go to school at the

Janeway? Along with the Provincial Department and Early Childhood

Development, we help our children learn and keep up with their

education while being cared for in hospital. Our school has two

classrooms, five teachers and a principle who are instrumental in

making the children’s lives as normal as possible while away from home.

K  is for KINDNESS Kindness is at the centre of everything we

do at the Janeway! An act of kindnesscan include something as small as smiling

when someone is walking by, giving

someone a hug when they need it the

most, helping a little girl put on a bracelet,

or as big as arranging major hockey teams

    to visit our children!

We are there for our children, whether it is

seeing them conquer an illness, supporting

them while battling a life-long health

condition, tying their shoes, or helpingthem become the best they can be!

L  is for LOVE Love is all around us at the Janeway!

When walking down the hall first thing in the

morning, you feel the love when seeing a little girl

giggling while sitting on her father’s shoulders or a

little boy cuddling in his mommy’s lap.

You can see the love and tenderness when a parent

is helping their child develop a brand new skill or go

through a difficult experience. You can also see love

by watching our staff care for their patients

    each and every day.

M  is for MEMORIES  The Janeway is like a memory box. Our staff share

many memories with our children and t heir families, whether they are happy, exciting, special, or even

heartbreaking sadness – all of these memories are

    unforgettable.

Often, we see children and their families coming

back for a visit to show us how the little ones have

grown and how much they have accomplished.

Those too, make up some of our fondest memories!

N  is for NURSES Nurses are a vital part of our health-care team. From the frontlines to the

boardrooms, nurses are everywhere at the Janeway. The Janeway employs

approximately 400 nurses who are key in working and communicating with

other health-care professionals within a patient’s circle of care. Our nurses have

a true passion for providing the best possible quality of care, and they have a

    strong commitment to patient safety.

O  is for OPERATIONS More than 5,500 surgeries are performed at the Janeway each year!

Using the latest advancements in modern technology, our medical

team has the skills and tools necessary to perform surgeries on our

province’s children, ranging from newborns weighing as little asthree pounds to teenagers up to 18 years old. Our staff ensures that

patient safety is paramount in the surgical environment, and that

quality care is provided at all times. There is nothing more rewarding

than watching our patients recover fully, living life to the fullest!

Since 1985, the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation has worked tirelessly in

its fundraising efforts, exploring new initiatives to ensure that our children

receive the best health-care possible. The continued support of

the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, our

community and corporate partners enable the

Foundation to enrich the delivery of medicalcare for all of our children!

P  is for PETS Did you know that we have pets? That’s right,

our children love to see our Pet Therapy

dogs come to visit every Thursday evening!

The children cuddle and play with the fluffy

animals and even get to give the animals

    some treats!

Our Pet Therapy program enables children to interact

with friendly and well-trained dogs, which

gives the children both comfort and

companionship when it is needed the most.

Q  is for QUALITY At the Janeway, we strive to provide a caring and

compassionate environment to our children and

    their families.

We have a strong culture of quality and safety, which

provides us with a firm foundation to deliver only the

    best patient care possible.

R  is for RESEARCH Research is key to understanding child health. Throughout the Janeway,

high quality research by pediatricians, faculty and staff continues, offering immediate and long-term benefits to improve the health and

well-being of our children and their families. We are always learning

new ways to improve on the diagnosis, treatment of illness and injury.

The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation also plays a key role in the

continued education of our Janeway staff, as well as the research and

programs directly related our children’s health and welfare. Each year,

the Janeway Foundation, through the generosity of our

donors, contributes to ongoing research and

    staff education programs.

S  is for SHIP Ahoy Matey! The Janeway has a ship on the first floor near our main

entrance. Well, it’s not a real ship … it’s a centre stage in the shape

    of a ship!

When the old Janeway Hospital moved to the Health Sciences Centre

in 2001, the ship became a focus point of the Janeway. Our ship is

accessible to all children, and is usually full of k ids playing with their new

friends in the waiting room. Sometimes, our physio therapy program

uses the ship as a cheerful base for providing care and treatment, and

often the ship is used for large group events filled with fun and laughter,

such Christmas parties with Santa and his elves, meet-and-

greets with hockey legends, and so much more!

It is so fun watching children playing in the

ship, using their imaginations to sail away

into the sunset, going fishing to see

who can catch the biggest fish,

or pretending to be pirates in

    the hunt for missing treasure!

T  is for TEACHING HOSPITAL  The Janeway plays a significant role as a teaching

hospital, serving as the training ground for the next

generation of leaders in pediatrics. With our primaryaffiliation with Memorial University of Newfoundland,

along with universities, colleges and schools across

the country, we offer a four-year pediatric physician

residency program, where we train pediatricians to

practice across for Canada. On average, the Janeway

has approximately 25 residents per year.

All of our health-care professional programs also offer

student and internship placements, contributing to

education in pediatrics. While students and

interns can be taught one-on-one withpatients, teaching can also be done with our

    pediatric simulation program.

U  is for UPLIFTING Working with our children is so uplifting! We get to

see some of the biggest smiles anyone has ever seen,

especially when heroes like Rick Hansen or famous

singers and hockey players come to visit our children.

We also have the privilege of witnessing some

breathtaking moments, such as children being able

to ride their bikes for the first time after treatment, or

children with special needs achieving the ability

to go skiing with their classmates. Children

of the Janeway are really our heroes!

V  is for VOLUNTEERS  The Janeway depends on so many people to ensure that our children and their

families get the care and attention they need and deserve. Among those people

    are our many volunteers!

The Janeway Auxiliary has been volunteering, raising funds and operating the

Janeway Gift Shop since 1968! Volunteers give so much more than their time

to assist us. They give of themselves, through their caring nature, often helping

make someone’s day a little brighter with a smile, offering a kind gesture,

helping a child read a book or making a craft in our playroom.

The true value of volunteers cannot be measured in

days, hours or minutes, but it can be seen in

the joy that comes across those beautiful

young faces we care for each day!

W  is for WISH  The Janeway’s playroom is where most wishes are made

and come true! Here we gather together to watch a child

blow out their birthday candles, to celebrate beating cancer

with end-of-chemo parties, or to help children connect

virtually with family and friends who are far away.

In our playroom we see hundreds of wishes come true

every year, and next to being in Mom and Dad’s

arms, it is truly one of the most special

    places in our hospital!

X  is for XYLOPHONE When walking through the Janeway, we can sometimes hear the sound

of music drifting down the hallways. That sound comes from our children

singing, enjoying the rhythm, beats and lyrics that they create with the use

of many different instruments as part of our Music Therapy program! We

use music therapy to help calm children and decrease some of their fears.

Our music therapist is instrumental in facilitating song writing and

recording music with our children. We know music

therapy is working when we see our

children humming to some tunes and

    dancing together!

Y  is for YELLOW BRICK ROAD What is known as the Yellow Brick Road connects the Janeway to the

adult hospital, the Health Sciences Centre. Yellow Brick Road became

affectionately known by our staff for its name because of the colour

of the tiled pattern on the floor. Because it looks like a path that can

be followed throughout the hospital, “just follow the Yellow Brick

Road” is often the directions we give our patients and their families

when visiting the Janeway for the first time!

us, sometimes the Janeway can be as silly as a zoo … but our

children, their families and staff love it!
