TRANSCRIPT
With Valentine’s Day came the kiss of SPRING~ or so it felt.
The students celebrated the month of February recognizing friendships, helping to
fill classroom buckets with compliments and strengthening their own hearts with
JUMPrope for Heart. Our school celebrated success with the students continuing
efforts of our 3B’s program with the sweet prize of popsicles~making everyone’s
heart smile. A small incentive for a big effort!
This month the Richland School District began a new schedule. The elementary
schools begin the day at 8:05. Keep in mind students should be arriving to school
anytime after 7:35, when adult supervision is provided on the playground. Break-
fast will be offered from 7:35-7:55.
Ask your child, “What does it mean to fill someone’s bucket?” and “What does it
mean if you empty someone’s bucket?” . These are questions that Mrs. Goff, our
Guidance Counselor, has discussed with all of our students. It is a simple way to
allow children to reflect on their choice of words and actions. It partners well
with our 3B’s Program that focuses on Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.
Thank you to all who sponsored and helped to raise funds for
JUMPrope for Heart, a worthy event. The students certainly enjoyed
the balmy weather on Friday, February 17th. An applause to Mrs.
Keller for her organizing and leading this event.
The spring like days were wonderful while they lasted~ welcome back winter.
~Mrs. Amy Hardy, Principal
Illnesses, Absence and Trying to Keep Healthy
The past few weeks we have seen an increase in illnesses. If your child will be ab-
sent please call school (647-6351) in the morning before 8:30. Also, share if you
would like your child’s homework to be picked up. If your child is diagnosed with
an illness contact the office so we are able to better care for other students that
may present similar symptoms. Encourage your child to wash their hands with
soap & water, drink with plenty of water and get plenty of rest in hopes of keeping
healthy.

Mrs. Keller has begun the Borrow Bin. Thank you to all that donated tennis
shoes to make the Borrow Bin possible; allowing our students to increase their
participation in gym class.
**Students will be able to use tennis shoes from the Borrow Bin for 3 times,
there after they will not be able to participate in PE. It is the responsibility of
our students to have tennis shoes on PE day but we recognize that sometimes we
simply forget or get off schedule.
Rollerskating is just around the corner. The students look
forward to this fast movin’ unit each year. Thank you to our
P.A.T.T. for funding this unit.

Jazzed About Jefferson
There are many ways you can support your child’s learning and their school.
Try these tips:
Spend a few minutes every evening looking over handouts your child
brings home. Fill out forms to return the next day.
Tell your child’s teachers if you can volunteer at school or from home.
Make sure teachers know you appreciate their efforts.
Contact your child’s teacher immediately if you see a problem. Working
together will help your child succeed.
Attend conferences, parent meetings and school events.
Good readers form mental pictures as they read. To
improve your child’s comprehension, read a book with-
out letting your child see it. Then, ask your child to
guess what the illustrations look like.
Examples: How are the characters dressed? Is the
setting bright or gloomy?

Second Grade Happenings by Mrs. Mattice & Mrs. Stibbe
We have been enjoying the warm temperatures and being more active in second grade. We walked
to the public library and enjoyed a STEM project. We were given the challenge of creating a bridge
using only newspapers and strings and then stacked books on our bridge to test its strength. Some of
our bridges held over 100 books! In math we are continuing to add and subtract two and three digit
numbers, telling time to 5 minutes, fractions, and counting money with quarters and dollars. We en-
joyed extra fun math and group activities for our Hundredth day of school. We are working on Opin-
ion writing in our Writer's Workshop as well as writing friendly letters. We interviewed and wrote
about a friend while studying friendship during Valentine's Day. We are working our reading fluen-
cy by decoding faster, figurative language using similes and idioms, and playful language by the
author to understand meaning. In science we are studying animal habitats and animal groups.
First Grade Happenings by Ms. Clements & Mrs. Koenig
First graders are looking forward to Read Across America Week.
My favorite Dr. Seuss character is ……….
Arizona- Cat in the Hat because I
like cats. They are cute and cuddly.
Rowan- The Grinch because at the
end of the story he gave back the
gifts that he stole.
Behr- Max because he is a dog.
Cayden- The Grinch is my favorite
because he steals presents, even the
kids’ candy canes. The Grinch is so
funny and scary, but not to me.
Ellie- Cat in the Hat because I like
cats.
Arturo- The Lorax is my favorite be-
cause I like the movie.
Izabella- Cat in the Hat because he
is fun.
Michael- Thing 1 and Thing 2 because
they are cute.
Dawson- The Grinch.
Aili- The Grinch because he is green.

Third Grade Happenings by Mrs. Louis
February has brought warmer weather and bigger smiles in
third grade! Many of our third graders have commented on
how “hot” it is outside and have asked the looming question,
“Do we HAVE to wear our coats outside today?” This new energy has helped
push us along in our classroom work, as well! We have been continuing to
work on building fluency with multiplication and division through 12 as well
as writing and completing our own story problems. Another exciting thing in
our room is the flexible seating we have been trying out in our room. Many stu-
dents prefer to sit on the floor, on a stool, on a rug, or at a shortened table to do
the best work they can instead of at their traditional desks. A few friends and
family donated some money to our classroom so that we can get some addi-
tional new seating options! They have been shipped and are on the way here,
which is very exciting! Thank you so much for the continued support of our
school and students!
Happy February! Our students have gotten off to a great start in this sec-
ond semester, and they have been up to many different things. In math, we have
been exploring two-step word problems and are developing strategies to make
these types of problems easier to solve. In addition, we are keeping our math
facts fluent by practicing them on Reflex Math.
In Writer’s Workshop, we have begun a new unit on opinion writing.
Each student has chosen a topic or issue that they would like to persuade others
about- we’ll see in a few weeks how convincing our students are! We are div-
ing deeper into our Reader’s Workshop as we discuss the characters of our sto-
ries and their values. We also love reading with our 1st grade buddies in Mrs.
Koenig’s classroom every Friday- it is a special treat!
Lastly, please remember to keep washing your hands
and drinking lots of water as we brave our way through this
cold and flu season. Keep yourself healthy- thank you!

As we head into March we are looking forward to the
warmer weather! We will continue our non fiction unit
on the American Revolution in Reading and writing
about the Revolution in Writing. In math we will be
moving into our unit on measurement. In Science, we
will continue our unit on the Human Body and in Social
Studies we will continue learning about the fur trade
era in Wisconsin. We will then discover Wisconsin’s
push towards statehood.
Fifth Grade Happenings by Mrs. Schroeder
What the Flag Means to Me
Our flag means a lot to me because it represents our freedom, justice and
liberty. At many sporting events we honor our flag and at school we honor our
flag. We should always honor our flag even if we aren’t near it.
If you are asking yourself why? That’s because people risk their life for our
freedom, justice and liberty. This is why we should always honor our flag.
We should also respect our flag because what if we didn’t have freedom
there would still be slaves. Do you think it would be fun to be a slave? I don’t
think it would be fun at all.
If you were the one who owned the slaves …well that would just be mean. It
would also be unfair to the slaves, because you are making them do your work.
The flag is special to me because we have freedom and rights unlike some
people that do not.
I took first place in an essay contest for Richland County and I got to read it on the radio at WRCO!
